Numerical investigation on scale-dependent vibrations of porous foam plates under dynamic loads

  • Dynamic responses of porous piezoelectric and metal foam nano-size plates have been examined via a four variables plate formulation. Diverse pore dispersions named uniform, symmetric and asymmetric have been selected. The piezoelectric nano-size plate is subjected to an external electrical voltage. Nonlocal strain gradient theory (NSGT) which includes two scale factors has been utilized to provide size-dependent model of foam nanoplate. The presented plate formulation verifies the shear deformations impacts and it gives fewer number of field components compared to first-order plate model. Hamilton's principle has been utilized for deriving the governing equations. Achieved results by differential quadrature (DQ) method have been verified with those reported in previous studies. The influences of nonlocal factor, strain gradients, electrical voltage, dynamical load frequency and pore type on forced responses of metal and piezoelectric foam nano-size plates have been researched.

  • Proper pulse sequences and experimental optimization for the 3D 15N edited TOCSY and NOESY spectra were described. Using sensitivity enhancement approach with coherent selection by pulsed field gradients described by Kay and co-workers, an considerable gain in sensitivity was achieved. The sensitivity was also improved by minimal water saturation using water flip-back pulse. Among the three types of TOCSY mixing pulse, named MLEV-17, DIPSI-2rc, DIPSI-2rc sequence gave the most sensitive spectrum. These results suggest an appropriate pulse sequence for for those 3D experiments for large proteins.

Characteristics of Hydrocarbon Refrigerants on Evaporating Heat Transfer and Pressure Drop

  • Experimental results for heat transfer characteristics and pressure gradients of HCs refrigerants R-290, R-600a, R-1270 and HCFC refrigerant R-22 during evaporating inside horizontal double pipe heat exchangers are presented. The test sections which has one tube diameter of 12.70 mm with 0.89 mm wall thickness, another tube diameter of 9.52 mm with 0.76 mm wall thickness are used for this investigation. The local evaporating heat transfer coefficients of hydrocarbon refrigerants were higher than that of R-22. The average evaporating heat transfer coefficient increased with the increase of the mass flux, with the higher values in hydrocarbon refrigerants than R-22. Hydrocarbon refrigerants have higher pressure drop than R-22. Those results from the investigation can be used in the design of heat exchangers using hydrocarbons as the refrigerant for the air-conditioning systems.

  • As a fundamental study to increase the fertility and to modify the sex ratio in cattle, highly motile sperm were separated by bovine serum albumin gradients. The pregnancy rates of Korean native cow and Holstein cow, and the sex ratio between AI and natural mating were also investigated. The results obtained were as follows. 1. First service pregnancy rate of Korean native cow in artificial insemination was higher than that of Holstein. 2. At secondary sex ratio in artificial insemination and natural mating, male ratio in artifical insemination was slightly higher than that in natural mating. 3. The sperm separated from marketed frozen semen using 6%, 10% and 20% bovine serum albumin showed significantly high value in motility, percent of normal sperm and progressive motility as compared with control sperm.

Parameter design of an hydraulic track motor system

  • This paper presents the parameter design method for the desired time response of hydraulic track motor system of an industrial excavator. The dynamic response depends upon many component parameters such as motor displacement, spring constant and various valve coefficients. Most of them are to be determined to obtain the desired response while some parameters are fixed, or discrete for the off-the-shelf type components. The parameters might be selected through repeated simulations of the system once the system is mathematically represented. This paper, however, presents optimization technique to select two parameters using a parameter optimization technique. The variational approach is applied to the system equations which are represented as state equations and from those system equations derived are the adjoint equations. The gradients for each parameter also are formed for the iterations.

  • Experimental results are presented for heat transfer and pressure gradients of HCs refrigerants R-290, R-600a, R-1270 and HCFC refrigerant R-22 during evaporating inside horizontal double pipe heat exchangers. Two tubes with a tube diameter of 12.70mm and 9.52mm are used for this investigation. Hydrocarbon refrigerants have higher pressure drop than R-22 in 12.7mm and 9.52mm. The results from the investigation can be used in the design of heat transfer exchangers using hydrocarbons as the refrigerant for the air-conditioning systems.

  • In this paper, we propose a new algorithm(N_BP) to be capable of overcoming limitations of the traditional backpropagation(O_BP). The N_BP is based on the method of conjugate gradients and calculates learning parameters through the line search which may be characterized by order statistics and golden section. Experimental results showed that the N_BP was definitely superior to the O_BP with and without a stochastic term in terms of accuracy and rate of convergence and might surmount the problem of local minima. Furthermore, they confirmed us that the stagnant phenomenon of learning in the O_BP resulted from the limitations of its algorithm in itself and that unessential approaches would never cured it of this phenomenon.

  • The evolution of strain states and textures during rolling with various conditions was investigated by finite element method (FEM) simulations and measurements of rolling textures. Symmetrical rolling with a high friction gives rise to a strong variation of shear strains in rolled sample leading to the formation of texture gradients throughout the thickness layers. A small variation of shear strains during rolling with a well lubrication condition leads to the formation of a fairly homogeneous rolling texture throughout the sheet thickness. During asymmetrical rolling, a proper control of rolling parameters provides the evolution of a fairly homogeneous shear texture throughout the whole sheet thickness.

  • In this study, the numerical model developed by Hong et al.(2008) was improved to be applied to rapidly varying flows such as the inundation of dry land or flow transitions due to large gradients of the bathymetry. A numerical approximation was applied that was consistent with the conservation of momentum in flow expansions and with the Bernoulli equation in flow contractions. The approximation was second order, but the accuracy reduced to first order near extreme values by the use of a minmod limiter. The modified model was verified by acomparison with the theoretical critical depth of weir, and for sufficiently smooth conditions and a fine grid size, both approximations converged to the same solution. In terms of the grid size, it was more effective at obtaining solutions than the previous model and reproduced the inundation of dry land.

  • In this paper, we propose a new paradigm (NEW_BP) to be capable of overcoming limitations of the traditional backpropagation(OLD_BP). NEW_BP is based on the method of conjugate gradients with the normalized direction vectors and computes step size through the linear search which may be characterized by order statistics and golden section. Simulation results showed that NEW_BP was definitely superior to both the stochastic OLD_BP and the deterministic OLD_BP in terms of accuracy and rate of convergence and might sumount the problem of local minima. Furthermore, they confirmed us that stagnant phenomenon of training in OLD_BP resulted from the limitations of its algorithm in itself and that unessential approaches would never cured it of this phenomenon.
