The water quality at Mankyeong River was surveyed 13 sites of main stream for 6 months from April to September in 1995 and 1997. The monthly average value of $NH_4-N$, $SO_4^{2-}$ and $Cl^-$ showed the highest peak in April while that of $NO_3-N$ showed the highest peak in August. The monthly average value of COD showed the highest peak in September at high temperature season. Concentrations of $NH_4-N$ and $SO_4^{2-}$ in Mankyeong River stream exceeded the standard water quality criteria in many sites. The water quality of Mankyeong River stream was not suitable for the irrigation source excepted the sites such as Hari, Gosan stream and Soyang stream. The floodgate of Mokcheon, Yocheon, Jeonju and Samcheon stream were rapidly polluted by the sewage of city, otherwise the Iksan stream was rapidly polluted by the sewage of swine. The sum of ionic concentrations in Mankyeong River stream was the highest at floodgate of Yocheon by influence of the sewage from city and industry. The order of the major anions and cations concentration in Mankyeong River stream were $SO_4^{2-}$ > $Cl^-$ > $NO_3-N$ > $SO_4^{3-}$ and $Na^+$ > $Ca^{2+}$ > $NH_4^+$ > $Mg^{2+}$ > $K^+$, respectively.
The modified biochemical oxygen demand (MBOD) were conducted to evaluate the water quality and fertility in the Mangyeong river from november 2002 to april 2003. MBOD method was used to evaluate algal growth potentials and their limiting factors. MBOD depends on the amount of available inorganic nutrient and organic substrate during 5-day incubation in the dark condition at $20^{\circ}C.$ The MBOD assay depends on inorganic nutrients such as phosphorus and nitrogen as well as reduced carbon as called MBOD, MBOD-P, and MBOD-N, respectively. The concentration of pollutants were in the range of 3.08~48.36 mg/L for COD. The concentration of nutrients were in the range of 0.37~111.62 mg/L for dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) and 0.00~1.03 mg/L for dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP). The results of MBOD bioassay showed that the MBOD, MBOD-P and MBOD-N values were 15~173 mg $O_2/L,$ 13~165 mg $O_2/L$ and 66~175 mg $O_2/L$ ranges, respectively. The MBOD values are found to be the highest in Iksan River and the lowest in Hari River throughout the Mangyeong River. The relationships of MBOD, MBOD-P and MBOD-N in MBOD method were generally found in MBOD$\risingdotseq$ MBOD-P$\risingdotseq$MBOD-N. But the result of Gosan was appeared to MBOD$\risingdotseq$MBOD-N > MBOD-P. The MBOD-N value was higher 3 to 5 times than the MBOD-P value in the Gosan station. The algal growth potentials expressed as the concentration of chlorophyll-a were maximum 20 times more than algal biomass in the water column.

Due to high oil price and global warming of the earth, investments for renewable energy have been increased a lot continuously. Specially, wind power has been received a great attention in the world. In order to construct a new wind farm, forecasting of wind power generation is essential for a feasibility test. This paper investigates wind velocity measurement data of Gosan weather station which located in Hankyung of Jeju island. This paper presents results of estimation of wind power generation using digital weather forecast provided from Korea meteorological administration, and the accuracy of the wind power forecasting by comparison between forecasted data and actual wind power data.

Real-time monitoring of hourly concentrations of atmospheric Radon-222 ($^{222}Rn$, radon) and some gaseous pollutants ($SO_2$, CO, $O_3$) was performed throughout 2013-2014 at Gosan station of Jeju Island, one of the cleanest regions in Korea, in order to characterize their background levels and temporal variation trend. The hourly mean concentrations of radon and three gaseous pollutants ($SO_2$, CO, $O_3$) over the study period were $2216{\pm}1100mBq/m^3$, $0.6{\pm}0.7ppb$, $211.6{\pm}102.0ppb$, and $43.0{\pm}17.0ppb$, respectively. The seasonal order of radon concentrations was as fall ($2644mBq/m^3$)$${\sim_\sim}$$winter ($2612mBq/m^3$)>spring ($2022mBq/m^3$)>summer ($1666mBq/m^3$). The concentrations of $SO_2$ and CO showed similar patterns with those of radon as high in winter and low in summer, whereas the $O_3$ concentrations had a bit different trend. Based on cluster analyses of air mass back trajectories, the air mass frequencies originating from Chinese continent, North Pacific Ocean, and the Korean Peninsula routes were 30, 18, and 52%, respectively. When the air masses were moved from Chinese continent to Jeju Island, the concentrations of radon and gaseous pollutants ($SO_2$, CO, $O_3$) were relatively high: $2584mBq/m^3$, 0.76 ppb, 225.8 ppb, and 46.4 ppb. On the other hand, when the air masses were moved from North Pacific Ocean, their concentrations were much low as $1282mBq/m^3$, 0.24 ppb, 166.1 ppb, and 32.5 ppb, respectively.

In recent years, environmental pollution by phannaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in the aquatic environment is of great concern worldwide. Recent studies have been reported to occur in a variety of environmental organisms such as surface, drinking and ground water, soils, sediments and hospitals. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the occurrence and environmental behavior of fourteen human PPCPs in surface waters of Mankyung River in South Korea. We were conducted to field survey for water quality and PPCPs analysis at November, 2006. PPCPs were analyzed by liquid chromatograph coupled with a tandem mass spectrometer (HPLC-MS/MS). The concentration of COD was measured to be 2.37$\sim$19.71 mg/L, which was belong to 4$\sim$5 grade in water quality criteria of lake. Station 2 that there is no pollution in upper stream, was appeared to lower concentration. The concentration of TN and TP, that is cause matter of eutrophication, were found to be 7.78$\sim$35.42 mg/L and 0.08$\sim$0.95 mg/L, respectively, which were exceeding 5 grade in Lake water quality criteria. The 11 kind of PPCPs compounds except levofloxacin and triclosan were detected to Mankyung river. PPCPs concentrations of STP(Sewer Treatment Plant) effluents and aquatic environment in Mankyung river have been detected in the range from dozens of ng/L to hundreds of ${\mu}g/L$ that by order of atenolol, carbamazepine, propranolol, Ibuprofen, erythromycin, ifenprodil, clarithromycin, mefenamic acid, fluconazole, indomethacin, disopyramide. PPCPs concentration of Station 1 and 5, which was influenced by Jeonju STP and Wanju STP, was detected high values. Station 2 that there is no pollution, showed lower values. Station 3 which joined Gosan stream and Jeonju stream and station 4 which influenced by stock wastewater was detected to low values.
Determining 'photosynthetically active radiation' (PAR) is a key part of calculating phytoplankton productivity in a biogeochemical model. We explore the daily and seasonal variability in the ratio of PAR irradiance to total irradiance that occurred at Ieodo Ocean Research Station (IORS) in the East China Sea under clear-sky conditions in 2004 using a simple radiative transfer model (RTM). Meteorological data observed at IORS and aerosol optical properties derived from Aerosol Robotic Network observations at Gosan are used for the RTM. Preliminary results suggest that the use of simple PAR irradiance-ratio values is appropriate in calculating phytoplankton productivity as follows: an average of $0.44\;({\pm}0.01)$ in January to an average of $0.48\;({\pm}0.01)$ in July, with average daily variabilities over these periods of about $0.016\;({\pm}0.008)$ and $0.025\;({\pm}0.008)$, respectively. The model experiments demonstrate that variations in the major controlling input parameters (i.e. solar zenith angle, precipitable water vapor and aerosol optical thickness) cause PAR irradiance ratio variation at daily and seasonal timescales. Further, increases (>0.012) in the PAR irradiance ratio just below the sea-surface are positively correlated with high solar zenith angles and strong wind stresses relative to those just above the sea-surface.

Recently, to make the best use of limited and precious spectrum resources, spectrum sharing between satellite and cellular networks has received much interest. In this study, we mathematically analyze the success probability of a fixed (satellite) earth station (FES) based on a stochastic geometry framework. Both the FES and base stations (BSs) are assumed to be equipped with a directional antenna, and the location and the number of BSs are modeled based on the Poisson point process. Furthermore, an exclusion zone is considered, in which the BSs are prohibited from locating in a circular zone with a certain radius around the FES to protect it from severe interference from the cellular BSs. We validate the analytical results on the success probability of the cognitive satellite-terrestrial network with directional antennas by comparing it using extensive computer simulations and show the effect of the exclusion zone on the success probability at the FES. It is shown that the exclusion zone-based interference mitigation technique significantly improves the success probability as the exclusion zone increases.

The Objective of this study is to examine the characteristic of fine aerosol $(PM_{2.5})$ obtained at Ieodo Ocean Research Station, which lies between the eastern part of China and the south western part of Korea. The average mass concentration of $PM_{2.5}$ was $21.5{\pm}17.0{\mu}g/m^3$ during June $2004{\sim}June 2006$. The concentration was the highest in winter $(34.8{\mu}g/m^3)$ and lowest in summer $(16.5{\mu}g/m^3)$. Water soluble ions were measured for samples collected from December 2004 to September 2005. Among them, $SO_4^{2-}\;and\;NH_4^+$ were the most abundant species and accounted for 32.2% and 14.2% of the $PM_{2.5}$ mass, respectively. The mass fraction of $SO_4^{2-}$ was higher in winter (42%) than in spring (26%). Nitrate concentrations were much lower than those of sulfate due mainly to evaporation during sampling period. The cluster analysis of backward airmass trajectories showed that the high mass loadings $(26.9{\mu}g/m^3\;on\;average)$ were associated with air originating inland China. Also, the seasonal variation of $PM_{2.5}$ mass was well correlated with the frequency of westerly winds passing through the western part of China. During the ABC-EAREX2005 (March 2005), $PM_{2.5}$ mass and major ionic concentrations were higher at Ieodo, compared with $PM_{2.5}$ measurements at Gosan while they were similar in variation pattern. These results suggested that $PM_{2.5}$ mass and its ionic composition of Ieodo Ocean Research Station were greatly influenced by continental outflows from China.
The Korea Meteorological Administration/National Institute of Meteorological Sciences (KMA/NIMS) has monitored atmospheric CO2 at Anmyeondo (AMY) World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Global Atmosphere Watch Programme (GAW) regional station since 1999, and expanded its observations at Jeju Gosan Suwolbong station (JGS) in the South and at Ulleungdo-Dokdo stations in the East (ULD and DOK) since 2012. Due to a recent WMO CO2 scale update and a new filter (NIMS) to select baseline levels at each station, the 22 years of CO2 data are recalculated. After correction for the new CO2 scale, we confirmed that those corrected records are reasonable within the compatibility goal (±0.1 ppm of CO2) between KMA/NIMS and National Oceanic and Atmosphereic Administration (NOAA) flask-air measurements with the new scale. With the new NIMS filter, CO2 baseline levels are now more representative of the large-scale background compared to previous values, which contained large CO2 enhancements. Atmospheric CO2 observed in South Korea is 4 to 8 ppm greater than the global average while the amplitude of seasonal variation is similar (10~13 ppm) to the amplitude averaged over a comparable latitude zone (30°N-60°N). Variations in CO2 growth rate are also similar, increasing and decreasing similar to global values, as it reflects the net balance between terrestrial respiration and photosynthesis. In 2020, atmospheric CO2 continued increasing despite the COVID-19 pandemic. Even though fossil emission was reduced (around -7% globally), we still emitted large amounts of anthropogenic CO2. Overall, since CO2 has large natural variations and its source was derived from not only fossil fuel but also biomass burning, the small fossil emission reduction could not affect the atmospheric level directly.
An orchestrated attempt was made to analyze samples of bulk and individual particulate matters (PM) collected at the Gosan ground-based station on the west coast of Jeju, Korea. A two-stage filter pack sampler was operated to collect particles in both large (> $1.2\;{\mu}m$) and small size fractions (< $1.2\;{\mu}m$) between the Asian dust (hereafter called "AD") storm event and non-Asian dust period. Elemental components in bulk and individual particles were determined by PIXE and synchrotron XRF analysis systems, respectively. To assess the transport pathways of air parcels and to determine the spatial distribution of PM, the backward trajectories of the Meteorological Data Explorer (Center for Global Environmental Research, 2010) and the NOAA's HYSPLIT dispersion-trajectory models were applied. In line with general expectations, Si and other crustal elements in large size particles showed considerably higher mass loading on AD days in comparison with non-AD days. Computation of the crustal enrichment factors [(Z/Si)$_{particle}$/(Z/Si)$_{desert}$ sand] of elements in large size particles (> $1.2\;{\mu}m$) allowed us to estimate the source profile and chemical aging of AD particles as well as to classify the soil-origin elements. On the basis of a single particle analysis, individual AD particles are classified into three distinct groups (neutralized mineral particles, S-rich mineral particles, and imperfectly neutralized particles).
