  • Mealworm, a type of edible insect, is a superior food material suitable for industrial products. In this study, four different defatted mealworm powders were prepared to determine proper manufacturing conditions. Solvent extraction method reduced lipid contents of mealworms more than pressed mealworms, and lowered lipid contents caused bright colors and good physicochemical properties for powders. In comparison, differences among milling machines used for making powders were strongly related with average size of particles. Meanwhile, the predicted shelf-life of defatted mealworm powders judged by accelerated experiments was 1 year or longer. To enhance shelf-life of mealworm powders, addition of tocopherol to mealworm powders at a concentration of 0.2% could intensify oxidative stability and microbial inhibition.

  • Using the fatigue test results obtained in the SAE Fatigue Cumulative Damage Test Program, prediction methods of fatigue crack initiation life for notched members undergoing random loaming histories were discussed in detail. Conventional fatigue life predictions based on so-called modified Miner's rule were found to be apt to give nonconservative estimate, due to lack of sufficient consideration for stress-interaction effect. A modified .epsilon.-N curve concept was proposed to account for the stress-interaction effect. The predicted fatigue life based on the modified .epsilon.-N curve concept was in good agreement with the experimental results of SAE Test Program. Specifically for the cases when fatigue data was not available at hand, was proposed a procedure to give conservative estimate of fatigue life.

  • In bulk metal forming processes prediction of tool life is very important for saving production cost and achieving good material properties. Generally the service life of tools in metal forming process is limited to a large extent by wear, fracture and plastic deformation of tools. In case of hot and warm forging processes, tool life depends on wear over 70%. In this study finite element analyses are applied to warm forging and hot forging by adopting suggested wear model. By comparision of simulation and real profile of die, suggested model is verified

  • The purpose of this study was to verify a Structural Equation Model that constructed the causations among the leisure resources, health perception, leisure attitude, leisure satisfaction and the quality of life in the elderly. For the purpose, 208 elderly who were over sixty years old and inhabited in Seoul were given questionnaires. Questionnaires were distributed by means of a 1:1 personal interview method. A Measurement model and a structural equation model estimates by Maximum Likelihood method(ML method) utilizing LISREL 8.51 ver. The major results are summarized as follows: 1) A Goodness of fit is good of structural equation model presented in the study. 2) The higher their leisure resource is, the higher health perception is, the higher leisure attitude is the more leisure satisfaction. 3) The important valuable factor which affected the quality of life in the elderly was the leisure satisfaction. It showed powerfully if the elderly participate enjoyment, self-development and positive leisure activity, their leisure satisfaction would increase, consequently the Quality of life would be improved.

  • A procedure to predict the fatigue life of rubber components based on the signed principal strain method was proposed. A tension-compression rubber specimen with Jang-gu shape was designed and principal strain distribution was obtained by using the nonlinear finite element analysis. Finite element analysis and fatigue test of strut rubber mount were conducted to evaluate the fatigue life prediction procedure proposed. A procedure was employed to predict the fatigue life of strut rubber mount. Predicted fatigue lives have a good agreement with tested lives within a factor of 3.

  • The assemblies of our partial genomic sequence data of Sphingomonas chungbukensis DJ77, with the total size of 877,928 bp, was done by TIGR Assembler. The total size of our current obtained contigs was about 0.73 Mb. A comparative genome analysis between our uncompleted genome and the other completed genomes was performed by taking advantage of the availability of multiple complete genomes in COGs database (Clusters of Orthologous Groups of proteins) to produce the genomic prediction of our S. chungbukensis DJ77. This analysis based on homologues search among completed genomes provides good initial step to our better assigning putative function to predicted coding sequences.

  • Failure mechanisms of welded joints under fatigue loads are interpreted that multiple collinear surface cracks initiating randomly along the weld toes propagate under the mutual interaction and coalescence of adjacent two cracks. To estimate fatigue crack propagation life for three types of the representative welded joints, i.e. non-load carrying cruciform, cover plate and longitudinal stiffener joint, the stress intensity factors at the front of the surface cracks have to be calculated, which are influenced strongly by the geometry of attachments, weld toes and the crack shapes. For the effective calculation of the stress intensity factors the Mk-factor was introduced which can be derived by a parametric study performed by FEM considering influence of the geometrical effects. The fatigue life of the cruciform joint was estimated by using the Mk-factors and the method considering the propagation mechanisms of the multiple surface cracks. Analysis results for the fatigue life had a good agreement with that of experiment.

  • According to our fatigue tests carried out at 20 Hz, R=0.1 on transversely butt~welded joints, fatigue strengths of as-welded specimens, that is, specimens having residual stress are higher than those of annealed specimens in short life range, but vice verse in long life range. This behavior seems to be concerned mainly with residual stress relaxation by applied loading. After analyzing the welding process, we conducted finite element analysis to quantify the degree of residual stress relaxation. By taking into account residual stress relaxation, modified Goodman diagram, and nominal stress, we evaluated the fatigue life of the welded joint from the S-N curve for the parent material. The estimated results are in a good agreement with the experimental results.

  • This paper presents an attempt to develop probabilistic multistress life models to evaluate the lifetime characteristics of epoxy-encapsulated magnet wire with heavy build polyurethane enamel. A set of accelerated life tests were conducted over a wide range of pulsating voltages, temperatures, and frequencies. Samples of fine gauge twisted pairs of the encapsulated magnet wire were tested us-ing a pulse endurance dielectric test system. An electrical-thermal lifetime function was combined with the Weibull distribution of lifetimes. The parameters of the combined Weibull-electrical-thermal model were estimated using maximum likelihood estimation. Likewise, a generalized electrical-thermal-frequency life model was also developed. The parameters of this new model were estimated using multiple linear regression technique. It was found in this paper that lifetime estimates of the two proposed probabilistic multistress life models are good enough. This suggests the suitability of using the general electrical-thermal-frequency model to estimate the lifetime of the encapsulated magnet wire over a wide range of voltages, temperatures and pulsating frequencies.

  • The next generation of diesel engine can operate at high injection pressure up to 1,800bar. The common rail pipe must have higher internal strength because it is directly influenced by the high-pressure fuel. Folding defects in the Common rail pipe can not ensure the structural safety. Therefore, Preform design and fatigue-life analysis are very important for preventing the head of the common rail pipe from folding in the heading process and for predicting fatigue life according to the amount of folding. In this study, a closed form equation to predict fatigue life was suggested by Goodman theory and pressure vessels theory in ASME Code in order to develop an optimization technique of the heading process and verified its reliability through fatigue-structural coupled field analysis. The results calculated by the theory were in good agreement with those obtained by the finite element analysis.
