The purpose of this study was to investigate the contributions of body joints to the kinetic energy of the clubhead in the golf swing. Three dimensional swing analysis was conducted on the seven KPGA golfers. The subjects were asked to swing with 45 inches of driver. The work done by body joints were computed by utilizing the inverse dynamics method. The order of work done by the body joints was lumbar > left hip > right shoulder > left wrist > right wrist > right hip at the first phase. At the second phase, the order of work done by the body joints was trunk > left elbow > right wrist > right shoulder > left wrist > right wrist. At the third phase, the order of work done by body joints was lumbar > right shoulder > left shoulder > left elbow > right wrist > right elbow. The sum of the work done by the body joints was lumbar > shoulder > wrist on the average. The kinetic energy of the club head was 430.11${\pm}$24.35 J and the subject's swing efficiency was shown as 31.82${\pm}$4.86% on the average. The contributions of body joints to the kinetic energy of the clubhead was the order of lumbar > upper right shoulder > left elbow > right wrist during the down swing.
This study analyzed performance according to kick point and stiffness of Soft-$golf^{TM}$ shaft. This research team developed soft-$golf^{TM}$ as a new fusion sports with similar motions with golf and it can be learned safely for all age groups in 2002. The head of Soft-$golf^{TM}$ club is made of zinc alloy and has a mesh or a grid structure, and shaft uses carbon graphite to reduce the total weight of the club. To improve carry distance and to assure consistency of a ball during Soft-$golf^{TM}$ swing, this study manufactured shaft with various kick points (low, middle and high) and stiffness (stiff, regular, lady, morelady) and analyzed a swing motion with characteristics of each shaft presented in a dynamic condition such as a ball's speed, a head's torsion angle and a ball's deviation with ProAnalyst program through a high-speed camera taking pictures using a swing machine robot system(Robo-7). From all of the results, this study determined an appropriate shaft of Soft-$golf^{TM}$.
The purpose of this study is to research on changes of body surface according to golf movements in designs of golf slacks pattern and reflect it to designs of golf slacks pattern to enhance adaptability. For the first stage of this study, length of body surface was analyzed by using 3D body shape. In second stage, analysis of wearing test of golf slacks is performed to extract major pattern design factor of golf slacks and then research patterns were designed. In third stage, 4 differently designed 1st, 2nd slacks were used for analysis of 3D Clothing air volume. The results of this research is as follow. The variation rate of body surface length according to golf swing posture resulted the longest on back swing posture and follow through posture. Waist circumference-omphalion, thigh and ankle circumference increased more than 10% of body surface during golf swing. Front waist circumference-omphalion, right waist to hip length, left waist to hip length and right back center length were decreased more than 10%. As a result of analysis on measurements of 1st slacks pattern design, waist front center getting in values, waist front center going down value, front hip width, and front crotch extension had similar industrial pattern design. Back center line angle, back crotch extension, and knee center point~back waist center point had significant differences. The designs and ease proposed for golf slacks pattern in this study are waist circumference 75.5 cm(1.8 cm, 2.38%), hip circumference 95 cm(2 cm, 2.11%), crotch length(front: -0.8 cm, -1.25%; rear: -1.8 cm, -2.83%), slacks length 96c m, gradient of C.B.L $10^{\circ}$, crotch extension (back 9.2~10.4 cm, front 3.2 cm).
The purpose of this study is to analyze joint angle for a range of swing motion derived through 3D motion analysis in order to design the ergonomic golf wear, use it for evaluation method of apparel fit to improve exercise functionality and provide the basic materials necessary for designing clothes. In order to do this, the subjects for this study were 3 men of age 20s. The data for a range of motion of golf swing were collected by using equipment for 3D motion analysis and then were used for analysis of joint angles and evaluation method of apparel fit. Range of motion was derived through 3D motion analysis of golf swing motion and joint angles for items of joint motion item and of X, Y, and Z-axis were calculated, respectively. In order to set the evaluation questions for evaluation of apparel fit, to find a range of motion at the maximal value and the minimal value of swing motion. As a result, during the swinging motion, neck extension, right shoulder extension, right/left elbow extension, right/left elbow supination did not appear. Items of joint motion showing the maximum at range of each swing motion were applied into 55 questions and consisted. The results of this study were meaningful as a basic study to apply 3D motion analysis to the fashion industry. It's expected to be used to design functional clothing.
This paper presents a visual tracking algorithm for the golf swing motion analysis by using the information of the pixels of video frames and movement of the golf club to solve the problem fixed center point in model based tracking method. The model based tracking method use the polynomial function for trajectory displaying of upswing and downswing. Therefore it is under the hypothesis of the no movement of the center of gravity so this method is not for the amateurs. we proposed method using the information of pixel and movement, we first detected the motion by using the information of pixel in the frames in golf swing motion. Then we extracted the club head and hand by a properties of club shaft that consist of the parallel line and the moved location of club in up-swing and down-swing. In addition, we can extract the center point of user by tracking center point of the line between center of head and both foots. And we made an experiment with data that movement of center point is big. Finally, we can track the real trajectory of club head, hand and center point by using proposed tracking algorithm.
Because the golf swing is very complex movement, it is varied in different gender, skill level, and club. This study measured kinematic variables in golf swing regarding gender, skill level, and club types using FasTrak electromagnetic tracking system. Golf swing kinematics including time variables, linear and angular displacement variables, angular velocity variables were analyzed and compared through three-way ANOVA The results were as follows: 1. In time variables, Female and driver showed longer backswing time than male and iron. Downswing time was longer in female and nonexperts than male and experts. Backswing time over downswing time was longer in experts than nonexperts. Uncocking time was longer in male and experts than female and nonexperts. The differences were statistically significant (p<.05). 2. In displacement variables, Female and nonexperts showed greater backswing head lift than male and experts. Impact head lift was greater in female, nonexperts, and iron than male, experts, and driver. The differences were statistically significant (p<.05). Experts and driver showed greater top hip rotation angle than nonexperts and iron. Top shoulder rotation angle was greater in male, experts and driver than female, nonexperts, and iron. X-factor was greater in male, experts, and driver than female, nonexperts, and iron. Male and experts showed greater backswing hip sway than female and nonexperts. Impact hip sway was greater in male and iron than female and driver. The differences were statistically significant (p<.05). 3. In velocity variables, Experts displayed higher impact hip rotation velocity than nonexperts. Impact shoulder rotation velocity was greater in male and iron than female and driver (p<.05).
The purpose of this study was to verify the effects of developed assisting wear which maximize trunk(back) muscle's stretch-shortening effect during backswing and downswing for increasing golf ball carrying distance. Design and fabrication of assistive wear were performed based on the results of analyzed data of trunk EMG activity from the golf drive swings of elite professional male golfers during back swing and downswing phases. After the prototype of wear was produced, surface EMG and Flight scope tests were conducted to verify the effectiveness of the wear for increasing distance to the professional golfers. Results indicated that wearing trial showed significant longer carry distance than the non-wearing trial(p<.001). The carry distance of wearing trial showed an average 229 m compared to the non-wearing trial, the average 225 m. The swing with wearing also produced significantly faster ball speed than the trial without wearing(p<.05). Average 245 Km/h and 244 Km/h were produced for the swing with and without wearing trails, respectively. EMG results also indicated that the muscle activity of left psoas was significantly increased for wearing trial during downswing and near the impact. Thus, this may affect positively to increase club head speed. The activity of the left latissimus dorsi was dramatically increased during the final stage of swing. This generates elongation effect for longer follow-through and increased impulse between club and ball so eventually valid assistance to increase carry distance. Therefore, the developed assisting wear was proved to be effective tool for increasing golf ball carry distance with maximizing trunk(back) muscle's stretch-shortening effect during backswing and downswing.

PURPOSE: To determine the effect of weight ball throw training as a preparatory exercise before golf practice for 8 weeks on back muscle strength, weight shifting of lower body, head speed of club, and driving distance of amateur golfers. METHODS: A total of 18 subjects were randomly assigned to the experimental group (n=9) and the control group (n=9), respectively. For the experimental group, Weight ball throw training was provided to the height of waist and shoulder similar to golf swing with the following schedule: 3 kg weight ball throw training from the first week to the 4th week; 5 kg weight ball throw training from the 5th week to the 8th week. Before and after 8 weeks of training, back muscle strength, weight shifting of lower body, head speed of club, and driving distance of subjects in the two groups were measured. RESULTS: The experimental group showed significant differences in rotational back extension torque, weight shifting of lower body, head speed of club, and driving distance during golf swing (p<.05). However, the control group only showed significant difference in driving distance during golf swing (p<.05). Back extension torque, weight shifting of lower body, and head speed of club showed significant differences between the two groups during golf swing (p<.05). CONCLUSION: Weight ball throw training can positively change rotational back muscle strength, weight shifting of lower body, head speed of club, and driving distance of amateur golfers. Therefore, it might be used as an effective warming up exercise for amateur golfers.
The purpose of this study is to provide basic materials for amateur golf players or golf maniacs to learn desirable iron swing motions. This study compared and analyzed the swing motions of iron clubs(3, 6, 9) by using 3-D in three elite golf players. 1. There was no a great difference in the total of swing time by club and the time by phase was nearly similar. 2. There was no a difference in the change in a head location at address and impact by club. 3. The angle change in a right knee joint was similar by club except the difference according to the length of the club. 4. There was a subtle difference in hip rotation angle by club. 5. In each club, the same rotation angle of shoulder joint at address and impact motions contributed to accurate swing, and the maintenance of more than $90^{\circ}$ of shoulder rotation angle in top swing increased swing rotation. 6. Although subtle, the forward angle of upper body was increased with a shorter club. $30-36^{\circ}$ of forward angle of upper body was maintained at address, top swing, and impact motions.
In this study, weight carrying pattern analysis and comparison method of four foot region were suggested. We used three types of club(driver, iron7, pitching wedge). This analysis method can compare between top class golfer and beginner. And the comparison data can be used to correct the swing pose of trainee. If motion analysis system, which can measure the swing speed and instantaneous acceleration at the point of hitting a ball, is combined with this plantar foot force analysis method, new design development of golf shoes to increase comfort and ball flight distance will be available. 1. Regional change of force acting, in address, is evenly distributed on both feet. In back swing top, 76% on right foot, 75% on left foot as impact, and 86% on left foot as finish. As regional force acting, in address, pros get high marks on rare and inside of right foot and rare and outside for amateurs. In back swing top, it is higher as fore and inside of left foot, pros as rare part of right foot and amateurs as forefoot. In impact, it is higher for pros and amateurs in outside and rare part of left foot and fore and inside of right foot. In finish, for both pros and amateurs, it is higher for outside and rare parts of left foot. 2. For each club, forces are evenly distributed on both feet in address. In back swing top, the shorter a club is, the higher impact on right foot and the higher finish distribution on left foot. For all the clubs used, in each region, pros get higher on rare and inside of right foot and as amateurs on rare and outside of left foot in address. In back swing top, for all clubs, pros get higher on rare and outside of right foot as fore and outside for amateurs. In impact acting, for all clubs, rare and outside of left foot get higher. In finish, force concentrates on rarefoot. 3. On both feet force, right foot forces of amateurs is higher than those of pros in back swing top. In impact and finish, pros get higher on left foot.
