  • This paper presents a modified localization scheme of a mobile robot. When it navigates, the position error of a robot is increased and doesn't go to a goal point where the robot intends to go at the beginning. The objective of localization is to estimate the position of a robot precisely. Many algorithms were developed and still are being researched for localization of a mobile robot at present. Among them, a localization algorithm named continuous localization proposed by Schultz has some merits on real-time navigation and is easy to be implemented compared to other localization schemes. Continuous Localization (CL) is based on map-matching algorithm with global and local maps using only ultrasonic sensors for making grid maps. However, CL has some problems in the process of searching the best-scored-map, when it is applied to a mobile robot. We here propose fast and powerful map-matching algorithm for localization of a mobile robot by experiments.

  • The purpose of this study is to search the level of localization strategy of imported brands in Korean Market, to investigate relationship between the brand characteristics and localization strategy, and to study the case about localization strategy of the brand selected according to the type of brand. The survey research was employed and for the data analysis, descriptive statistics, one-way ANOVA, and multiple-regression were used. For the case study, interview with the person who works in the each kind of company was used. The results of this study were as follows: Firstly, the level of localization strategy is found in order price, place, promotion and product. Secondly among the brand characteristics, type of brand, proportion of garments, price zone, launching time, number of shop are related with localization strategy, but turnover and number of the staff are not. Thirdly, license brand has the characteristics like as national brands and the differences between the branch and the agent is confidence and communication that are the basic elements of localization. This study can help national brands to refer the localization strategy and provide the understanding of localization strategy of imported brands in Korean fashion market.

  • Korea Institute of Atmospheric Prediction System (KIAPS) has been developing a global numerial prediction model and data assimilation system. We has implemented LETKF (Local Ensemble Transform Kalman Filter, Hunt et al., 2007) data assimilation system to NCAR CAM-SE (National Center for Atmospheric Research Community Atmosphere Model with Spectral Element dynamical core, Dennis et al., 2012) that has cubed-sphere grid, known as the same grid system of KIAPS Integrated Model (KIM) now developing. In this study, we have assimilated Global Positioning System Radio Occultation (GPS-RO) bending angle measurements in addition to conventional data within ensemble-based data assimilation system. Before assimilating bending angle data, we performed a vertical unit conversion. The information of vertical localization for GPS-RO data is given by the unit of meter, but the vertical localization method in the LETKF system is based on pressure unit. Therefore, with a clever conversion of the vertical information, we have conducted experiments to search for the best vertical localization scale on GPS-RO data under the Observing System Simulation Experiments (OSSEs). As a result, we found the optimal setting of vertical localization for the GPS-RO bending angle data assimilation. We plan to apply the selected localization strategy to the LETKF system implemented to KIM which is expected to give better analysis of GPS-RO data assimilation due to much higher model top.

  • Mobile robot localization is the task of estimating the robot pose in a given environment. This research deals with outdoor localization based on an elevation map. Since outdoor environments are large and contain many complex objects, it is difficult to robustly estimate the robot pose. This paper proposes a Hausdorff distance-based map matching method. The Hausdorff distance is exploited to measure the similarity between extracted features obtained from the robot and elevation map. The experiments and simulations show that the proposed Hausdorff distance-based map matching is useful for robust outdoor localization using an elevation map. Also, it can be easily applied to other probabilistic approaches such as a Markov localization method.

  • This paper presents a novel localization paradigm for mobile robots based on artificial and natural landmarks. A model-based object recognition method detects natural landmarks and conducts the global and topological localization. In addition, a metric localization method using artificial landmarks is fused to complement the deficiency of topology map and guide to action behavior. The recognition algorithm uses a modified local Zernike moments and a probabilistic voting method for the robust detection of objects in cluttered indoor environments. An artificial landmark is designed to have a three-dimensional multi-colored structure and the projection distortion of the structure encodes the distance and viewing direction of the robot. We demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed system through real world experiments using a mobile robot, KASIRI-III.

  • For improved localization around the indoor/outdoor transit area of buildings, this paper proposes an efficient algorithm combining the measurements from the WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network) and the GPS (Global Positioning System) for. The proposed hybrid localization algorithm considers both multipath errors and NLOS (Non-Line-of-Sight) errors, which occur in most wireless localization systems. To detect and isolate multipath errors occurring in GPS measurements, the propose algorithm utilizes conventional multipath test statistics. To convert WLAN signal strength measurements to range estimates in the presence of NLOS errors, a simple and effective calibration algorithm is designed to compute conversion parameters. By selecting and combining the reliable GPS and WLAN measurements, the proposed hybrid localization algorithm provides more accurate location estimates. An experiment result demonstrates the performance of the proposed algorithm.

  • To compensate the drawbacks, a new localization method that estimates the global position of the mobile robot by using a camera set on ceiling in the corridor is proposed. This scheme is not a relative localization, which decreases the position error through algorithms with noisy sensor data. The effectiveness of the proposed localization scheme is demonstrated by the experiments.

  • In order for a service robot to perform several tasks, basically autonomous navigation technique such as localization, mapping, and path planning is required. The localization (estimation robot's pose) is fundamental ability for service robot to navigate autonomously. In this paper, we propose a new system for point pattern matching based visual global localization using spot lightings in ceiling. The proposed algorithm us suitable for system that demands high accuracy and fast update rate such a guide robot in the exhibition. A single camera looking upward direction (called ceiling vision system) is mounted on the head of the mobile robot and image features such as lightings are detected and tracked through the image sequence. For detecting more spot lightings, we choose wide FOV lens, and inevitably there is serious image distortion. But by applying correction calculation only for the position of spot lightings not whole image pixels, we can decrease the processing time. And then using point pattern matching and least square estimation, finally we can get the precise position and orientation of the mobile robot. Experimental results demonstrate the accuracy and update rate of the proposed algorithm in real environments.
