The Study on the Meaning of the Family Experienced by Undergraduates Taking over Traditional Art as Family Occupation: Giorgi's Phenomenological Approach (전통예술 가업계승 대학생이 경험하는 가족의 의미 - Giorgi 현상학적 접근 -)

  • The purpose of this study is to understand the experiences in family and the meaning and nature of the family which undergraduate students have when taking over traditional art as family occupation. Five students were selected who majored in traditional art in order to succeed to their family occupation and in-depth interviews with them were conducted according to semi-structured interview guidelines. Collected data were analyzed through Giorgi's phenomenological study procedures and resulted in 65 main meanings, 16 emerging themes and 7 essential themes. These essential themes consisted of 'innate talents in their blood', 'internalization of artistic family traditions', 'impetus given by the family', 'the driving force as a professional artist', 'a life like being imprisoned', 'the wall impossible to go over' and 'family occupations turning into mine .' Based on the results of this study, discussion and implications of the study were presented.

  • Objective : The purpose of this study was to understand the game world experience and peer interaction of students with disabilities in the community. Method : In this study, Giorgi's phenomenological method was used to understand the game world experience and peer interaction of two students with disabilities in the community. The data collection about the situation and the context of the subjects was conducted over three times of interviews, until no new data. Meaning units through the four steps for Giorgi's scientific phenomenology were analyzed in the context of the overall data. Result : Two students with disabilities in the community had to spend time at home with physical limitation and alienation, and their leisure activities was mainly using the computer and television. Restrictions of leisure activities wad the cause of difficulties of social accessibility, and they need the correct thinking and self-control in the use of the time. Due to the game for fun, they have no interact with peers. On the other hand, most of conversation about the game were with families. Conclusion : Students with disabilities had a physical and psychological difficulties were feeling pleasure through the game. They need the correct thinking and self-control in the use of the time, and need an alternative solution for a reckless game use.

A Phenomenological Study of Experience about Family Caregivers' Caring for Their Terminal Cancer Patient (호스피스 병동 말기 암 환자 가족의 돌봄 경험에 관한 현상학적 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the meaning and essence of experience of family members as care-givers of terminally ill cancer patients at hospice wards. This study was based on the Giorgi phenomenological method, which describes the experiences about the family caregivers. We had in-depth interview with spouses and orthogonal families of nine terminally ill cancer patients. Results were drawn into 13 essential themes, 45 sub themes, and 122 main points. The essential themes are as follows: "cling of life", "bed-keeper", "sacrifice of care", "physical and mental exhaustion during care process","feeling of love and hatred", "avenge on a patient", "self-condemnation", "futility after exhaustion", "consolation of other caregivers", "utmost efforts in resignation", "freedom from suffering", "paradoxical blessing of cancer", "introspected revolution", and "preparation of a dignified death". Implications and limitations are discussed based on study results.

  • This research is about recovery experiences of rehabilitators who reside in the therapeutic community. Nine rehabilitators who reside in the therapy community have participated in this research. The research methods are made up with in-depth interview and descriptive analysis phrases of phenomenology Giorgi has proposed. The result of this research can be summarized as follows: participants have experienced courage to confront, reestablishment of responsibility, social skills training in daily life, therapeutic ally family, improvement in labour productivity, golden bridge of returning to their family and encounter self-existence. Based on the result of research, researchers have proposed the job-training program in therapeutic community, link the therapy community to the resource of local community and participation of rehabilitators' family in programs of the therapeutic community.

A Phenomenological Study on Field Experiences of Radical Social Workers (급진사회운동가들의 사회복지실천현장 경험에 대한 현상학적 연구)

  • This research is performed to verify a suggestive understanding and undertone on radical social workers's balanced practical experiences responding to the current situation to discover the new practical way of Korean social work so as to overcome the limitation of the above mentioned microscopic approach. It focuses on Giorgi's descriptive phenomenological study and further relating areas to provide information on Radical Social Workers'(RSW) social work practical and specific experiences and fundamental implication. This research has been participated with 9 RSWs, led the past democratic movement, have participated with this research. The data covers 84 meaningful units, 24 exposed topics, and 7 essential themes. The essential themes are as follow; lifting a latch into prepared changes, unavoidable destiny, drive for change from the bottom, collaborated forces of minority groups, changing the oppressive laws and institutions to more favorable ones for minorities, being patient and waiting required as birds breaking eggs to become a bird. Based on the collected data, Researchers discuss the main features and issues of our instituted social work practices.

  • This study was designed to explore the experiences of female victims who had abused by alcohol-abusing spouse. The results were deducted from in-depth interview with 10 female victims by utilizing Giorgi's phenomenological method. The results of research showed that experiences of women could be classified in three stages. From the lack of understanding stage, "ignorance of drunken violence" had appeared. "Confinement of vicious circle of drunken violence" and "dealing with drunken violence in the community" had been found from the coping stage. Finally, from the resting stage "re-defining of the relationship" had been drawn. Based on these results, the practical and political implications were suggested.

  • The purpose of this study is to conduct an in-depth interview on 5 middle aged women who have attempted suicide in the past and to explore their suicide attempts and the vivid empirical value of life after the attempt. The collected data were analyzed using Giorgi's phenomenological approach. The data analysis resulted in 21 sub categories and 7 essential categories. Study participants experienced an-'selected death at the end of a cliff', 'standing on the border of life and death', 'life became clear after escaping delusion', 'working toward life once again', 're-evaluating their past life and discovering new possibilities', 'experiencing the vividness of life here', 'spiritual growth and deeper insight'. Such results offer a discussion on existence toward self-completion, and hold significance in that it increased our in depth understanding and recognition beyond the narrow perceptions of individuals who attempt suicide.

  • The purpose of this study is to find out what kind of experience docent programs provide to visitors in museums by means of Giorgi's phenomenological method. In-depth interview was conducted with 6 visitors who had experienced firsthand. As a result of the coding based upon Giorgi's method, it was divided into 6 categories and 21 subcategories, and the following results were obtained. First, the reason that the subjects of the study participated in the docent program was due to factors such as information, coincidence, induction of companions, and habits. Second, from participating in the docent guide, they felt that the docent led them to actively visit the exhibition, get the educational effect, and generate interest and curiosity. Third, looking at the reaction after participating in the docent guide, in addition to the positive influence, the docent's reading-like explanation and the problem of the microphone facility were negative experiences. Through this study, it was confirmed that there were many visitors who recognized that the docent guide was helpful in viewing the exhibition and experienced positive reactions. In addition, in the evaluation of the commentary of docent, there was a difference of views between art-related majors and non-majors. In addition, as a result of analyzing the participants' experiences according to Holt's frame of experiential consumption, it was found that the docent experience was a comprehensive consumption behavior appearing in all four fields.

A Comparison of Phenomenological Research Methodology - Focused on Giorgi, Colaizzi, Van Kaam Methods - (현상학적 연구방법의 비교고찰 - Giorgi, Colaizzi, Van Kaam방법을 중심으로 -)

  • The purpose of this study was to describe the differences in three phenomenological research methods used to understand the experience of families of patients with cancer and so provide as guideline to novices first attempting qualitative research. The subjects were 3 family members - spouse, daughter, daughter-in-law -of cancer patients at S-hospital. Unstructured deep interviews were carried out and taped for further analyzed. Interviews were analyzed using three phenomenological methods ; Giorgi's, Colazzi's, and Van Kaam's. The results are as follows. : The experience of family the analyzed using Giorgi's method showed different characteristics according to the family members' role. According to Colaizzi's method, they experienced burden, a willingness to care, role conflict, thanks to family and significant others, and ambivalence about treatment. Using Van Kaam's methodology, two categories were identified ; change of family function and burden. Themes in change of family function were positive attitude(9), role conflict(6), negative attitude(5), active attitude(2), and passive attitude(2) ; Themes in burden were emotional burden, physical burden, and economic burden. The result from using Giorgi's method were centered or individual characteristics and these results constituteds situational structured description and a general structured description. From Colaizzi's method the focus was on the common experience of all fo the subjects. In Van Kaam's method, subthemes (13), themes(8), and categories(2) were identified. So researchers should choose the qualitative method according to their research goals and methodological characteristics.

Experience Sexual Harassment of Nurses: Phenomenological Study (간호사의 병원 내 성희롱 피해 경험: 현상학적 연구)

  • This study was carried out in order to determine the essential structure and meaning of sexual harassment experienced by nurses, prepare a systematic mediation measure that could prevent sexual harassment. In this study, Giorgi's phenomenological research method and an in-depth interview were used, and data was collected from seven participants in general hospital nurses who had experienced sexual harassment from August 6, 2022 to March 25, 2023. The main question used in the in-depth interview was "What does sexual harassment mean to you?". The transcribed data was analyzed according to the method presented by Giorgi through the stages including reading of the data, breaking of the data into some kind of parts, organization and expression of the data from a disciplinary perspective and synthesis or summary of the data for purposes of communication to the scholarly community. As a result, 159 meaning units, 37 essential psychological meanings, 13 sub-constituents, 5 constituents were drawn. The five components include 'exposed to the front line of sexual harassment', 'struggling alone', 'feeling abandoned from the organization', 'finding a way to get through together' and 'feeling changing'. Based on the above results, it is expected to prevent sexual harassment of nurses and provide basic data useful for preparing systematic intervention measures for them and improving the system.
