Approximately 10% of all angiosperms belong to the Asteraceae family. Plant species belonging to this family have traditionally been used as medicinal plants in the Korean Peninsula. We investigated the antioxidant activity of seed extracts from 14 species belonging to the Asteraceae family. Seeds with ≥ 90% percentage of filled seed and ≥ 50% final germination were used. The total phenolic content was the highest in Dendranthema zawadskii var. tenuisectum (13.5 mg of gallic acid equivalents (GAEs)/g seeds), followed by Dendranthema zawadskii var. latilobum (11.8 mg of GAEs/g seeds), and Callistephus chinensis (11.0 mg of GAEs/g seeds). The total flavonoid content was highest in C. chinensis (9.8 mg of quercetin equivalents (QEs)/g seeds), followed by D. zawadskii var. tenuisectum (7.2 mg of QEs/g seeds) and Taraxacum officinale (6.3 mg of QEs/g seeds). Our results showed that 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH) scavenging activity was highest in D. zawadskii var. tenuisectum (57.4 ㎍/ml), followed by T. officinale (59.1 ㎍/ml) and D. zawadskii var. latilobum (65.0 ㎍/ml), with a half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) of DPPH scavenging activity. Furthermore, 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) radical scavenging activity was highest in C. chinensis (26.2 ㎍/ml), followed by D. zawadskii var. tenuisectum (38.4 ㎍/ml), T. officinale (40.2 ㎍/ml), with a half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) of ABTS scavenging activity. Based on a cluster analysis according to the antioxidant activity, the 14 species were classified into five groups, with group 4 having the highest antioxidant activity and group 0 having the lowest antioxidant activity. D. zawadskii var. latilobum, D. zawadskii var. tenuisectum, T. officinale, and C. chinensis belonging to groups 3 and 4, exhibited high phenolic content and antioxidant activity and can be considered potent plant-derived natural antioxidants.

Crops and varieties are mostly affected by temperature, the amount of precipitation, and duration of sunshine. This study aims to identify the weather factors that directly influence to apple yield among the series of daily measured weather variables during growing seasons. In order to identify them, 1) a priori natural scientific knowledge with respect to the growth stage of apples and 2) pure statistical approaches to minimize bias due to the subject selection of variables are considered. Each result estimated by the Panel regression using fixed/random effect models is evaluated through suitability (i.e., Akaike information criterion and Bayesian information criterion) and predictability (i.e., mean absolute error, root mean square error, mean absolute percentage). The Panel data of apple yield and weather factors are collected from fifteen major producing areas of apples from 2006 to 2013 in Korea for the case study. The result shows that variable selection using factor analysis, which is one of the statistical approaches applied in the analysis, increases predictability and suitability most. It may imply that all the weather factors are important to predict apple yield if statistical problems, such as multicollinearity and lower degree of freedom due to too many explanatory variables used in the regression, can be controlled effectively. This may be because whole growth stages, such as germination, florescence, fruit setting, fatting, ripening, coloring, and harvesting, are affected by weather.
Quantity of protein, amino acid, and sugar leaked from seeds was greater as the viability of seeds was dropped by the time elapsed of seed aging treatment. In the seeds with the artificial aging treatment for 20 days, 35.8 mg of protein was leaked on the 4th day after soaking, which was 6.9 times higher than that of control. Leakage of amino acid was also higher from low quality seeds treated with the aging treatment. In the seeds with the aging treatment for 20 days, $36.5{\mu}g$ fig of sugar was leaked on the 4th day after soaking, which was 2.8 times higher than that of control. The leakage of inorganic compound was higher from the low quality seeds, and leakage of total protein, amino acid, and sugar. According to .the quantity of leakage, water soluble compounds, which can be used for the assessment of seed quality without any destruction, were protein and potassium. Germination rate and percentage of seeds were dropped with the seed aging treatment, and the seed viability could be recovered by priming treatment. This phenomenon was very clear when the low quality seeds were germinated at low temperature.

The paper industry produces about 6,000 ton of paper ashes yearly with by-products in Yuhan-Kimberly Ltd. The paper ashes was analyzed and evaluated for their potential as the soil acidity amendment materials. This study was conducted to investigate a reasonable amount of paper ashes for soil acidity amendment effect to be applied onto raising seedling of Calendula officinalis L. The mixed proportion of applied ashes, which was compared with agricultural lime, was treated to 0, 5, 10 and 15% (v/v) in mixed soil (pH 6.0) and the peat moss (pH 3.8) respectively. Consequently paper ashe was found to be more effective than agricultural lime at germination percentage, growth condition and in sharp initial increase of soil pH. The appropriate proportion of applied paper ash was 10% (v/v) at the soil-mix, and 15% (v/v) at the peat-moss. Soil application of paper ashes may provide supplemental quantities of K, Ca, Mg and other plant nutrients. But heavy metal concentrations in paper ash was low and should not limit application rates.
Characteristics of sweet (sugary, su) and super sweet (shrunken-2, sh2) corn seeds shelled by different threshing methods at different moisture content status were studied. Hybrid seeds of a su (Early Sunglow ${\times}$ Golden Cross Bantam 70, GCB 70) and a sh2 (Xtrasweet 82 ${\times}$Fortune) were dried to moisture content of 12, 15, 18, and 21%. Hand shelling did not give any mechanical damages to seeds, while an electrical corn thresher gave some visible mechanical damages. The emergence rate of hand shelled seeds was higher than that of machine shelled seeds by $6{\sim}14%$ for a su and by $9{\sim}18%$ for a sh2 hybrid depending on seed moisture contents in cold test. The optimum seed moisture content to reduce mechanical threshing damages and to improve seed quality was 15% for su and 12% for sh2 hybrid seeds. At the optimum seed moisture contents, germination rate at $25^{\circ}C$, emergence rate in the cold test and ${\alpha}-amylase$ activity were highest, while the percentage of damaged seeds and leakage of total sugars and electrolytes in soaking water were minimized.
In order to investigate the possibility for use to control environmental pollution, Kenaf(Hibiscus cannabinus L.) was used to obtain information of their growth and $CO_2$ response under different temperatures and $CO_2$ concentration. The highest percentage of germination and aboveground dry mass of Kenaf were found at 30$^{\circ}C$ and 35$^{\circ}C$ by 89.0% and 3.2g, respectively under different temperatures. The amount of $CO_2$ absorption and aboveground dry mass production of Kenaf were higher than those of maize during the whole growing period and the last sampling of aboveground dry mass of Kenaf and maize were 252.9g and 200.8g, respectively. The highest plant height was found at 400ppm by 131.0cm and the next was in the order of 600ppm by 1293cm, and 800ppm by 108.8cm. Leaf area was higher in the order of 400ppm > 600ppm > 800ppm, whereas leaf dry mass was in the order of 800ppm > 600ppm > 400ppm under different $CO_2$ concentration, showing that leaf became thicker as $CO_2$ concentration was increased. Days from seeding to flowering became shorter by 13 days in 35/25$^{\circ}C$ compared with 25/15$^{\circ}C$ between two temperature regimes and they also became shorter as $CO_2$ concentration was increased. Aboveground dry mass was higher in 35/25$^{\circ}C$ than that of 25/15$^{\circ}C$ between two temperature regimes. while it was increased in the order of 800ppm > 600ppm > 400ppm as CO2 concentration was increased. Temporal changes of leaf dry mass during growth period showed no difference between $CO_2$ concentration in 25/15$^{\circ}C$ , but the highest of it was found at 800ppm in 35/25$^{\circ}C$. The highest temporaI increase of root dry mass was found at 800ppm in 25/15$^{\circ}C$, but 35/25$^{\circ}C$ showed no difference between different $CO_2$ concentration.
This study was conducted to investigate whether seedling growth be affected by immature kernels from different stages after flowering in rye, triticale, wheat and oats cultivars, for two years in Suwon. Kernels reached a near-maximum test weight at 35 days after flowering in Paldanghomil and Dooroohomil (Rye), and 30 days in Sinkihomil (Triticale), Geurumil (Wheat), and Megwiri (Oats). Test weight of immature kernels from different days after flowering were not significantly correlated with germination percentage, but highly positively correlated with their seedling height, fresh and dry weight. However, seedling height is not different among seedlings from kernels harvested at 20, 25 and 30 days (maturing time) after flowering of Sinkihomil and Megwiri, and between 25 and 30 days (maturing time) of Geurumil. Also between seedlings from 25 day and 30 day-kernel after flowering are little difference of fresh and dry weight of Sinkihomil and Megwiri. In Suwon, located at the middle part of Korea, it was suggested that Paldanghomi1 and Dooroohomil could be harvested at 35 days (June 19, and June 24, respectively) after flowering, and Sinkihomil, Geurumil, and Megwiri, at 25days (June 24, June 14 and July 4, respectively) after flowering for seed of for2:ge production.

The unmanaged abandoned concrete roads are vulnerable toward the issues on soil and water pollution, which requires flexible managing method such as eco-corridor after the process of ecological restoration. Among various alternations of abandoned concrete-paved roads, ecological restoration technique may be the most suitable method in sites including high quality of natural environment. Therefore, as in Young dong province, GyungBu express highway (227.24~229.04km), which is near to Hwang-gan IC, the survey to measure its effect of soil under the paving and water pollution by abandoned concrete roads was discussed. Then, the restoration method of plantings of landscape trees and hydro-seeding methods of artificial soil media was appraised through consecutive monitoring. The soil adequacy analysis shows lower percentage of heavy metal substance in each depth level compared to standard limit stated by the Ministry of Environment, along with low concerns raised after the analysis on heavy metal content of the spilled water on the concrete roads. Meanwhile, Korean Weigela (Weigela subsessilis L.H. Baily) was found to be withered in small-scale landscape trees planting sites. Among the seeding plants. the family of leguminosae, Silene armeria, Dendranthema boreale, Caryopteris incana and Aster yomena show good establishment results. Overall studies on planting of small and large landscape trees, planting method of container plants, planting method of ground cover plants, and germination and development trend of seeding plants of the experimental restoration site on abandoned concrete roads are revealing specific trends in the way landscape woody plants establishment and growth. Finally, this study suggests further studies and survey on varied plant restoration methods on abandoned concrete-roads for developed design guidelines of their methods.
Embryogenic callus was selected from callus induced from hypocotyl segment cultures of Daucus carota seedlings on MS basal medium supplemented with 1.0 mg/L 2,4-D. Cell clumps prepared from the embryogenic callus were transferred to MS medium without 2,4-D for somatic embryo development. Cotyledonary abnormalities were frequently observed on somatic embryos developed after the incubation of cell clumps in MS basal medium with 1.0 mg/L 2,4-D for one week and then subculture in the same medium but without 2.4-D for two weeks. The percentage of abnormalities was as follows: 5% one cotyledon, 21% three cotyledons, 6% four cotyledons, 5% five cotyledons, 0.2% six cotyledons and 1% trumpet-like cotyledons. On the other hand, the normal somatic embryo with two cotyledons appeared at 63%. The germination rate of somatic embryos was higher in two cotyledon somatic embryos than in multicotyledonary embryos. Trumpet-like somatic embryos did not germinate normally showing limited elongation and enlargement of roots and cotyledons without shoot development. From anatomical examination circular procambium in the root of somatic embryo began to branch around the middle regions of the hypocotyl which extended into the cotyledons through the cotyledonary nodes and the number of branched procambial strands in hypocotyl was equal to the number of cotyledons. Monocotyledonous somatic embryo always had larger cotyledon than that of somatic embryos with multicotyledons and had horseshoe-like cotyledons where the procambium was of the same structure.ucture.
Three post-harvest fields each in four rice growing areas, Iri, Naju, Jinju and Taegu were randomly selected and surveyed during December 1986 to examine sclerotial density of Rhizoctonia solani overwintering in the field. Surface soil of $0.09m^2$ area was sampled in each field with three replications and sieved to collect sclerotia. Germiability and pathogenicity of collected sclerotia were examined in the laboratory. Number of sclerotia $({\times}10^6)/ha$ in Iri, Naju, Jinju, and Taegu was estimated from the sample as 2.7, 1.2, 0.7 and 0.6, respectively. Based on sample variance with simple random sampling in each area, number of sampling required for estimating average sclerotial density with the precision of 10% apart from a chance of 1 in 20 was calculated to 41, 132, 232, and 395 for Iri, Naju, Jinju and Taegu, respectively. Percentage of germination of sampled sclerotia on potato sucrose agar (PSA) ranged from 42 to 78% depending on the area, and averaged 60%. About 49% of the germinated sclerotia were pathogenic to a rice cultivar Jinheung that was used to test pathogenicity of the sclerotia. Proportion of viable sclerotia that have both germiability and pathogenicity was thus estimated to 0.29 of total sclerotia collected. R. solani cultures obtained from the sclerotia could be distinguished into three groups based on colony morphology on PSA. Size and number of sclerotia formed on PSA differed between group but were not associated with pathogenicity to Jinheung.
