  • Purpose: This study elicited Korean students' experiences of nursing practice at geriatric hospitals. Method: A purposive sample of 26 Korean nursing students was recruited from K College of Nursing located in Daegu, Korea. Inclusion criteria were nursing students who: 1) finished nursing practice at geriatric hospitals, 2) were oriented and communicable, and 3) understood research purpose and agreed to participate in this study. Individuals were interviewed using Q-methodology. Results: The majority of the participants had experience of living with the elderly and volunteering related to elder care. Data analysis showed that participants' experiences of nursing practices were consisted of three types: skill acquiring-oriented, relationship-oriented, and practice system-oriented. Conclusion: Nursing practices at geriatric hospitals provided opportunities of having positive attitude toward the elderly for nursing students. Nursing students' experiences were divided into at least three different types. Nursing educators need to develop curriculum for gerontological nursing practice tailoring to theses differences.

  • Background: Few nurses are trained in palliative care for long-term care in Korea. The End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC)-Geriatric training program improves nurses' ability to promote palliative care for the elderly. Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate nurses' satisfaction and knowledge following the attendance at the ELNEC-Geriatric curriculum on nurses' knowledge of palliative care. Methods: Nine ELNEC-Geriatric modules were presented to 203 interdisciplinary professionals on July 1 and 3, 2010, in Seoul, South Korea. The Palliative care quiz for nursing (PCQN) was used to evaluate nurses' knowledge. Of all the participants, 128 nurses were completed the questionnaire. Of these nurses, 45.2% were staff nurses and 73.4% were hospital nurses. Results: Approximately eight nine percent of the nurses reported previous experience in caring for dying patients and attending various hospice palliative care training programs. Overall program satisfaction of the participants was 4.03 on a 5-point scale, and their mean of the total PCQN score was 12.75 out of 20 after participating in ELNEC-Geriatric course, which was a significant improvement (p=.022) from the pretest. Conclusion: The results of this study demonstrate that ELNEC-Geriatric curriculum was successfully implemented and significantly contributed to increasing the nurses' knowledge for palliative care in long-term care in Korea.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of the cognitive training program on cognitive function, stress and depression in geriatric hospitals. Methods: The subjects of the experimental group were 17 elderly patients who attended the cognitive training program in Geriatric Hospitals and the subjects of the control group were 15 elderly patients who attended in geriatric hospitals. The persons in training group must take cognitive training program for 4 weeks by 3 times a week. The Mini-mental State Examination Korea version (MMSE-K), Geriatric depression Scaleshort form-Korea version (GDS-K) and Korean Computerized Neurobehavioral Test (KCNT) were utilized to determine cognitive function, stress and depression. The collected data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test and ANOVA using SPSS/PC 12.0 program. Results: Cognitive function (t=-7.625, p=.000) in the elderly after receiving the cognitive training program was significantly more improved than before intervention. Also, Stress and depression (t=2.73, p=.004) was significantly more reduced than before the intervention. Conclusion: This cognitive training program was partially effective in improving cognitive function, neurobehavioral performance and reduce stress and depression. Therefore, it is recommended that this program be used in clinical practice as an effective nursing intervention in geriatric hospitals.

  • Purpose: This descriptive research study is intended to develop practical strategies for enhancing the quality of elderly care by evaluating the levels of ageism and compassion competence among clinical nurses and their impact on geriatric nursing performance. Methods: This study involved 162 nurses who provided direct care to elderly patients in a department with many such patients. Of the 161 returned questionnaires, 150 were analyzed, excluding 11 that had insincere or missing responses. To analyze the data, a comprehensive approach was employed using the IBM SPSS 27.0 program that included calculations of frequency and percentage, mean, and standard deviation, as well as more complex statistical tests such as the independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and hierarchical linear regression analysis. Results: Compassion competence was significantly positively correlated with elderly care and negatively correlated with ageism. This study conclusively demonstrates that compassion competence among nurses in geriatric nursing situations plays a crucial role in provision of quality nursing grounded in understanding and respect for the elderly. Consequently, it is imperative to develop educational strategies tailored to each career stage of nursing practice to further enhance effective elderly care. Conclusion: This study conclusively demonstrates that compassion competence in geriatric nursing situations plays a crucial role in provision of quality nursing grounded in understanding and respect for the elderly. Consequently, it is imperative to develop educational strategies tailored to each career stage of nursing practice to further enhance effective elderly care.

  • Purpose: The study investigated the knowledge and compliance on hand hygiene moments among nursing care workers in geriatric hospitals. Methods: A total of 143 nursing care workers at geriatric hospitals were selected. Data collection was conducted from February 20 to March 20, 2017. Results: For all hand hygiene scenarios, the total correct answer rate was 71.5%. On the necessary hand hygiene moments, the compliance rate was 68.3%. With respect to the general characteristics of the participants, knowledge on hand hygiene moments showed a statistically significant difference according to clinical career(p=.001), and existence of infection controller or infection control office in the nursing home(p=.038). Compliance showed differences according to clinical career(p=.023), existence of infection controller or infection control office in the nursing home(p=.033), and training experience in hand hygiene(number of times/year)(p=.035). Knowledge and compliance showed a statistically significant positive correlation(r=.90, p<.001). Conclusions: It is necessary to develop and operate an infection control education program that can improve the knowledge and awareness of hand hygiene moments and considers the individual characteristics geriatric hospitals's nursing care workers.
