Recently, the grounded electrical-source airborne transient electromagnetic (GREATEM) system with high power source was introduced to achieve deeper investigation depth and to overcome high noise level. Although the GREATEM is a transient electromagnetic system using a long grounded wire as the transmitter, GREATEM data have been interpreted with 1D earth models because 2D or 3D modeling and inversion of vast airborne data are complicated and expensive to calculate. Generally, 1D inversion is subsequently applied to every survey point and combining 1D images together forms the stitched conductivity-depth image. However, the stitched models often result in abrupt variations in neighboring models. To overcome this problem, laterally constrained inversion (LCI) has been developed in inversion of ATEM data, which can yield layered sections with lateral smooth transitions. In this study, we analysed the GREATEM data through 1D numerical modeling for a curved grounded wire source. Furthermore, we developed a laterally constrained inversion scheme for continuous GREATEM data based on a layered earth model. All 1D data sets and models are inverted as one system, producing layered sections with lateral smooth transitions. Applying the developed LCI technique to the GREATEM data, it was confirmed that the laterally constrained inversion can provide laterally smooth model sections that reflect the layering of the survey area effectively.
Seabed multiple reflections (seabed multiples) are the main cause of misinterpretations of primary reflections in both shot gathers and stack sections. Accordingly, seabed multiples need to be suppressed throughout data processing. Conventional model-driven methods, such as prediction-error deconvolution, Radon filtering, and data-driven methods, such as the surface-related multiple elimination technique, have been used to attenuate multiple reflections. However, the vast majority of processing workflows require time-consuming steps when testing and selecting the processing parameters in addition to computational power and skilled data-processing techniques. To attenuate seabed multiples in seismic reflection data, input gathers with seabed multiples and label gathers without seabed multiples were generated via numerical modeling using the Marmousi2 velocity structure. The training data consisted of normal-moveout-corrected common midpoint gathers fed into a U-Net neural network. The well-trained model was found to effectively attenuate the seabed multiples according to the image similarity between the prediction result and the target data, and demonstrated good applicability to field data.
Conventional analysis of spectral induced polarization (SIP) data consists of measuring impedances over a range of frequencies, followed by spectral analysis to estimate spectral parameters. For the quantitative and accurate estimation of subsurface SIP parameter distribution, however, a sophisticated and stable inversion technique is required. In this study, we have developed a two-step inversion approach to obtain the two-dimensional distribution of SIP parameters. In the first inversion step, all the SIP data measured over a range of frequencies are simultaneously inverted, adopting cross regularisation of model complex resistivities at each frequency. The cross regularisation makes it possible to enhance the noise characteristics of the inversion by imposing a strong assumption, that complex resistivities should show similar characteristics over a range of frequencies. In numerical experiments, we could verify that our inversion approach successfully reduced inversion artefacts. As a second step, we have also developed an inversion algorithm to obtain SIP parameters based on the Cole-Cole model, in which frequency-dependent complex resistivities from the first step are inverted to obtain a two-dimensional distribution of SIP parameters. In numerical tests, the SIP parameter images showed a fairly good match with the exact model, which suggests that SIP imaging can provide a very useful subsurface image to complement resistivity.
The MH21 Research Consortium has conducted a high-resolution 3D seismic survey and a seafloor geochemical survey, to explore methane hydrate reservoirs in the eastern Nankai Trough, offshore Japan. Excellent geological information about shallow formations was obtained from the high-resolution 3D seismic survey, which was designed to image the shallow formations where methane hydrates exist. The information is useful in constructing a geological and geochemical model, and especially to understand the complex geology of seafloor, including geochemical manifestations and the structure of migration conduits for methane gas or methane-bearing fluid. By comparing methane seep sites observed by submersibles with seismic sections, some significant relationships between methane hydrate reservoirs, free gas accumulations below the seafloor, and seafloor manifestations are recognised. Bathymetric charts and seafloor reflection amplitude maps, constructed from seismic reflections from the seafloor, are also useful in understanding the relationships over a vast area. A new geochemical seafloor survey targeted by these maps is required. The relationships between methane hydrate reservoirs and seafloor manifestations are becoming clearer from interpretation of high-resolution 3D seismic data. The MH21 Research Consortium will continue to conduct seafloor geochemical surveys based on the geological and geochemical model constructed from high-resolution 3D seismic data analysis. In this paper, we introduce a basis for exploration of methane hydrate reservoirs in Japan by fusion of 3D seismic exploration and seafloor geochemical surveys.

We acquired and interpreted more than 650 km of high-resolution seismic reflection profiles in the Hupo Basin, offshore east coast of Korea at $37^{\circ}N$ in the East Sea (Japan Sea) to image shallow and basement deformation. The seismic profiles reveal that the main depocenter of the Hupo Basin in the study area is bounded by the large offset Hupo Fault on the east and an antithetic fault on the west; however, the antithetic fault is much smaller both in horizontal extension and in vertical displacement than the Hupo Fault. Sediment infill in the Hupo Basin consists of syn-rift (late Oligocene. early Miocene) and post-rift (middle Miocene.Holocene) units. The Hupo Fault and other faults newly defined in the Hupo Basin strike dominantly north and show a sense of normal displacement. Considering that the East Sea has been subjected to compression since the middle Miocene, we interpret that these normal faults were created during continental rifting in late Oligocene to early Miocene times. We suggest that the current ENE direction of maximum principal compressive stress observed in and around the Korean peninsula associated with the motion of the Amurian Plate induces the faults in the Hupo Basin to have reverse and right-lateral, strike-slip motion, when reactivated. A recent earthquake positioned on the Hupo Fault indicates that in the study area and possibly further in the eastern Korean margin, earthquakes would occur on the faults created during continental rifting in the Tertiary.
Nowadays, various digital maps on a reduced scale were drawn in Korea including the topographic series of a nation. Though these digital maps are drawn and revised by using aerial photograph or satellite image, there are some problems that it is difficult to revise or renew the topography and natural feature immediately which changes frequently. As the countermeasures of these problems we use GPS accumbency method, which provides user with convenience and accumbency accuracy which is required to revise and renew digital maps. But acquiring correct position by using GPS only may cause not a few errors because of environmental effect of satellite signal errors that GPS obtains. Although accumulated errors which is the major problem of existing method was diminished owing to the position signal received from satellite which is about 20,183km above, the area that can not receives the signal is occur such as woods and high-rise buildings space. And because of the GDOP (Geometry Dilution of Precision) of GPS satellite and the periodically changing orbit of the satellite, the position calculating problems occur. For settlement of these problems and accurate position determination, DGPS (Differential GPS) is indispensably needed. So, in this study, by adapting Radio Beacon Receiver for marine position determination which is the most convenience method of DGPS methods, we elevated accuracy of modification and renewal of digital map and, having wide application in various measurements, proposed the rapid measurement method about widespread area. In this study, wewant to propose the work scheme of rapid modification and renewal of digital map by using Beacon GPS which is comparatively cheap of all the DGPS methods and which makes it possible to measure independently.
For the dectection of small cavity in the hard rock, we investigated the feasibility of crosswell travel-time tomography and Kirchhoff migration technique. In travel-time tomography, first arrival anomaly caused by small cavity was investigated by numerical modeling based on the knowledge of actual field information. First arrival delay was very small (<0.125 msec) and detectable receiver offset range was limited to 4m with respect to $1\%$ normalized first arrival anomaly. As a consequence, it was turned out that carefully designed survey array with both sufficient narrow spatial spacing and temporal (<0.03125 msec) sampling were required for small cavity detection. Also, crosswell Kirchhoff migration technique was investigated with both numerical and real data. Stack section obtained by numerical data shows the good cavity image. In crosswell seismic data, various unwanted seismic events such as direct wave and various mode converted waves were alto recorded. To remove these noises und to enhance the diffraction signal, combination of median and bandpass filtering was applied and prestack and stacked migration images were created. From this, we viewed the crosswell migration technique as one of the adoptable method for small cavity detection.

This article reviews the development of three-dimensional (3-D) magnetotelluric (MT) modeling. The 3-D modeling of electromagnetic fields is essential in understanding the physics of MT soundings, and in implementing an inversion method to reconstruct a 3-D resistivity image. Although various numerical schemes have been developed over the last two decades, practical methods have been quite limited. However, the recent rapid improvement in computer speed and memory, as well as the advance in iterative solution algorithms for a large system of equations, makes it possible to model the MT responses of complex 3-D structures, which have been very difficult to simulate before. The use of staggered grids in finite difference method has become popular, conserving a magnetic flux and an electric current and allowing for realistic discontinuous fields. The convergence of numerical solutions has been greatly accelerated by adopting Krylov subspace methods, proper preconditioning techniques, and static divergence corrections. The vector finite-element method using edge elements is also free from the discontinuity problem, and seems a natural choice for modeling complex structures including irregular topography because its flexibility allows one to capture full geometric complexity.
We have developed an inversion algorithm for loop-loop electromagnetic (EM) data, based on the localised non-linear or extended Born approximation to the solution of the 2.5D integral equation describing an EM scattering problem. Source and receiver configuration may be horizontal co-planar (HCP) or vertical co-planar (VCP). Both multi-frequency and multi-separation data can be incorporated. Our inversion code runs on a PC platform without heavy computational load. For the sake of stable and high-resolution performance of the inversion, we implemented an algorithm determining an optimum spatially varying Lagrangian multiplier as a function of sensitivity distribution, through parameter resolution matrix and Backus-Gilbert spread function analysis. Considering that the different source-receiver orientation characteristics cause inconsistent sensitivities to the resistivity structure in simultaneous inversion of HCP and VCP data, which affects the stability and resolution of the inversion result, we adapted a weighting scheme based on the variances of misfits between the measured and calculated datasets. The accuracy of the modelling code that we have developed has been proven over the frequency, conductivity, and geometric ranges typically used in a loop-loop EM system through comparison with 2.5D finite-element modelling results. We first applied the inversion to synthetic data, from a model with resistive as well as conductive inhomogeneities embedded in a homogeneous half-space, to validate its performance. Applying the inversion to field data and comparing the result with that of dc resistivity data, we conclude that the newly developed algorithm provides a reasonable image of the subsurface.
Seismic inversion is a high-resolution tool to delineate the subsurface structures which may contain oil or gas. On the other hand, marine controlled-source electromagnetic (mCSEM) inversion can be a direct tool to indicate hydrocarbon. Thus, the joint inversion using both EM and seismic data together not only reduces the uncertainties but also takes advantage of both data simultaneously. In this paper, we have developed a simultaneous joint inversion approach for the direct estimation of reservoir petrophysical parameters, by linking electromagnetic and seismic data through rock physics model. A cross-gradient constraint is used to enhance the resolution of the inversion image and the maximum likelihood principle is applied to the relative weighting factor which controls the balance between two disparate data. By applying the developed algorithm to the synthetic model simulating the simplified gas field, we could confirm that the high-resolution images of petrophysical parameters can be obtained. However, from the other test using the synthetic model simulating an anticline reservoir, we noticed that the joint inversion produced different images depending on the model constraint used. Therefore, we modified the algorithm which has different model weighting matrix depending on the type of model parameters. Smoothness constraint and Marquardt-Levenberg constraint were applied to the water-saturation and porosity, respectively. When the improved algorithm is applied to the anticline model again, reliable porosity and water-saturation of reservoir were obtained. The inversion results indicate that the developed joint inversion algorithm can be contributed to the calculation of the accurate oil and gas reserves directly.
