  • The towfish oi a side scan sonar is an equipment that search images of the bottom surface of the sea in real time. It is a typical equipment that is related to a sea investigation such as a geological survey, seabed communication cable and power line cable placing repair investigation, fish breeding ground investigation, sea purification, relic and mineral investigation, and mine and submarine search. It used to find objects and Investigate on the seabed surface. But, recently, it is used to sea purification and geological survey that require information of the correct surface of the seabed. So, it needs various filtering technique and image processing techniques development to acquire high resolution image. Therefore, this research develops a side scan sonar using multi-beam sensors that supply various information with the fast scan speed and correct high resolution that is not a simple underwater investigation equipment.

  • The study tasked by Ryan Lode Mines, Inc. involved analysis of pit slope stability for two future pits, Ryan and Curlew. A geological discontinuity survey and groundwater information were obtained through a field program. Twenty core logs containing geotechnical information were used for rock mass classification. The kinematic analysis was performed based on a friction angle (${\Phi}=35^{\circ}$), the distribution of geological structures, and a dry slope condition. Factors of safety of pit slopes in two future mines were determined using the limit equilibrium method. The mine slopes and benches designed by Mine Development Associates (MDA) were analyzed. The analysis indicated that both pits should have an overall safety factor above 1.0, provided the slopes are kept dry. However, slopes in both pits exceeding 91.4 m (300 ft) high will become critical, when water fills the cracks and discontinuities.

  • In this study we propose a method for 3D landform reconstruction and object modeling method by generating contour lines on the map using a depth sensor which abstracts characteristics of geological layers from the depth map. Unlike the common visual camera, the depth-sensor is not affected by the intensity of illumination, and therefore a more robust contour and object can be extracted. The algorithm suggested in this paper first abstracts the characteristics of each geological layer from the depth map image and rearranges it into the proper order, then creates contour lines using the Bezier curve. Using the created contour lines, 3D images are reconstructed through rendering by mapping RGB images of the visual camera. Experimental results show that the proposed method using depth sensor can reconstruct contour map and 3D modeling in real-time. The generation of the contours with depth data is more efficient and economical in terms of the quality and accuracy.

  • An integrated 3D GIS-based approach for understanding underground environment is proposed and applied to a land subsidence in densely populated region. Bedrock and geological discontinues were treated as main factors in this study. Because land subsidence in this study area was caused by cavity owing to dissolved limestone in percolating ground water. Ground was classified according to bedrock types using a clustering method and geological information, N value, and RQD value of boreholes were visualized and integrated by 3D-GIS. Therefore it was possible to recognize underground space easily and analyze the ground information effectively.

  • Recently, spatial integration for mineral exploration is regarded as an important task of various geological applications of GIS. Therefore, theoretical bases of data representation and reasoning concerned with Dempster-Shafer theory and Fuzzy theory were systematically as the data-driven integration methodologies for raster-based geoinformation; they are distinguished from target-driven methodology based on statistical background. According to previous actual applications of these methods to mineral exploration, they have been proven to provide useful information related to hidden target mineral deposits, and it is thought that some suggestions in this study are helpful to further real applications including representation, reasoning, and interpretation stages in order to obtain a decision-supporting layer.

  • Geophysical surveys were conducted on an upper part of a natural slope located at Daejeon University. Electrical resistivity and seismic refraction measurements were carried out to obtain information on a weathered zone and internal structure at shallow depth, while AMT measurement a bed rock and geological structure at deep depth. With all the techniques applied, these results show a good correlation between electrical resistivity images and refraction velocity distributions for the characterization of a weathering and geological structure at depth. In particular, AMT survey seems to be the powerful tool for detecting a distribution of a bed rock with deep depth. The combined geophysical investigation produced a detailed image of a subsurface structure and improved well in the interpretation.

  • The operational safety assessment is an important part of a safety case for the deep geological repository of spent fuels. It consists of different stages such as the identification of initiating events, event tree analysis, fault tree analysis, and evaluation of exposure doses to the public and radiation workers. This study develops a probabilistic safety assessment method for the operational safety assessment and establishes an assessment framework. For the event and fault tree analyses, we propose the advanced information management system for probabilistic safety assessment (AIMS-PSA Manager). In addition, we propose the Radiological Safety Analysis Computer (RSAC) program to evaluate exposure doses to the public and radiation workers. Furthermore, we check the applicability of the assessment framework with respect to drop accidents of a spent fuel assembly arising out of crane failure, at the surface facility of the KRS+ (KAERI Reference disposal System for SNFs). The methods and tools established through this study can be used for the development of a safety case for the KRS+ system as well as for the design modification and the operational safety assessment of the KRS+ system.

  • Geological structures such as fault and fracture patterns provide important information about preliminary exploration of mineralized areas and geological characterization. They may be recognized and interpreted from satellite images as line-like features usually referred to as lineaments. A proposed filtering method taking the sums azimuth angle into account is utilized, by which linear edges from low contrast areas where features extend parallel to the sun direction and in mountain shadow can be effectively extracted. Then, generalized Hough transform is applied to extract lineaments which correspond to fault and fracture patterns.

  • The principle and applications of GPR(Ground Penetrating Radear) are familiar to engineering geologists and geophsicists as very attractive technique for continuous high resolution images of the subsurface. However, the main limitation of GPR is obviously related to presence of clayey or silty conductive soils, resulting in complete attenuation of radar signals. This difficulty gives hesitation for the exploration of the deeper targets for example detecting bedrock, particularly in Korean situation that most regions have conductive overburden. In order to prove usefulness of geological survey with GPR in that situation, the technique was tried to investigate depth of bedrock under thick conductive overburden and the other geolocgical informations for the constructionof foundation in the Dongbu apartment site, Kimhae. The reflection patterns on the processed GPR sections are well correlated with the geotechnical units-bedrock, alluvium, landfill unit and their internal layer-boundaries of boring data before GPR survey, except upper contact of bedrock. The isopach maps of the geotechnical units for the 3-D interpretations are made from GPR sections. The maps provided useful geological information that bedrock was distributed as plain and valley with 22~27m depth under alluvium unit (this depth is 5~8 m deeper than drill log) and sedimentary layers subsided and bended along growth fault with NNE strike/15$^{\circ}$SE dip in alluvium unit.
