In order to develop an effective mineral exploration technique, this study was carried out about the potential mapping of Gagok mine. The deposit model of Gagok mine is widely known. Based on the deposit model, we constructed mining indicator indices using related igneous rocks, faults, and carbonate rocks. By analyzing the spatial correlation between ore and indicator index structures, we decided the weighting values of indices according to the distance from the index structure. The 3D potential mapping was performed using 3D geological model and geological indices. The analyzed potential map verified that the locations and patterns of high potential regions of the results were well matched with those of the known ore bodies. Using the potential mapping results, we could effectively predict the location of a high potential area that has similar geological settings with ore.

We study seismically induced, anti-plane strain wave motion in a non-homogeneous geological region containing tunnels. Two different scenarios are considered: (a) The first models two tunnels in a finite geological region embedded within a laterally inhomogeneous, layered geological profile containing a seismic source. For this case, labelled as the first boundary-value problem (BVP 1), an efficient hybrid technique comprising the finite difference method (FDM) and the boundary element method (BEM) is developed and applied. Since the later method is based on the frequency-dependent fundamental solution of elastodynamics, the hybrid technique is defined in the frequency domain. Then, an inverse fast Fourier transformation (FFT) is used to recover time histories; (b) The second models a finite region with two tunnels, is embedded in a homogeneous half-plane, and is subjected to incident, time-harmonic SH-waves. This case, labelled as the second boundary-value problem (BVP 2), considers complex soil properties such as anisotropy, continuous inhomogeneity and poroelasticity. The computational approach is now the BEM alone, since solution of the surrounding half plane by the FDM is unnecessary. In sum, the hybrid FDM-BEM technique is able to quantify dependence of the signals that develop at the free surface to the following key parameters: seismic source properties and heterogeneous structure of the wave path (the FDM component) and near-surface geological deposits containing discontinuities in the form of tunnels (the BEM component). Finally, the hybrid technique is used for evaluating the seismic wave field that develops within a key geological cross-section of the Metro construction project in Thessaloniki, Greece, which includes the important Roman-era historical monument of Rotunda dating from the 3rd century A.D.
In this study, a geological field trip learning program using 3 Dpanorama virtual reality (PVR) techniques is developed to learn about the Chaeseokgang area located in a national park near Byeonsan-bando, Jeonbuk, Korea. The developed $360^{\circ}{\times}180^{\circ}$ PVR program can show every face of observational points and interact as zoom-in, zoom-out and image rotation. For the educational effects of the materials, it is provided with a compass, a protractor for measuring the dip of strata and observation of specimen of observational points. It also assists students to learn by providing enlarged images, pop-up windows, and expert explanation main observational points. The program is applied to the class of 35 gifted students in middle school to investigate the effectiveness of the program. The results showed that positive responses of the students were 85% or more. It is suggests that this program be used as indirect situated learning material and a solution to geological field trip problems like cost, safety, distance, and so on geological learning of middle school science.

3D visualization of geological environments using remotely sensed data and the various sources of data provides new methodology to interpret geological observation data and analyze geo-information in earth science applications. It enables to understand spatio-temporal relationships and causal processes in the three-dimension, which would be difficult to identify without 3D representation. To build more realistic geological environments, which are useful to recognize spatial characteristics and relationships of geological objects, 3D modeling, topological analysis, and database should be coupled and taken into consideration for an integrated configuration of the system. In this study, a method for 3D visualization, extraction of geological data, storage and data management using remotely sensed data is proposed with the goal of providing a methodology to utilize dynamic spatio-temporal modeling and simulation in the three-dimension for geoscience and earth science applications.
Paleomagnetic and geological studies of volcanic and sedimentary rocks of Jeju Island have been carried out to determine the position of virtual geomagnetic pole(VGP), and to estimate the geological sequence and their age. As a result of paleomagnetic studies, the reversal polarities are measured in the Sanbangsan trachyte and Hwasun formation, and the normal are the rest. In case of normal polarity, the mean values of declination and inclination are $2.3^{\circ}$ and $48.4^{\circ}$, respectively, and the average value of VGP is $85.4^{\circ}N$ and $79.9^{\circ}W$. The locations of VGP's are coincident with those obtained from world-wide Plio-Pleistocene rocks. The Hwasun formation and Seongsan formation which have been known to be sedimented in the similar time in the 2nd-stage of volcanic eruption, possess reversal and normal polarities, respectively. This fact brings about the result that two formations should be separated in a sense of geological sequence. Consequently, the geological sequence of the 2nd-stage of volcanic eruption is Pyoseonri basalt-Seoguipo hawaiite-Hwasun formation-Seongsan formation-Jungmun hawaiite-Sanbangsan trachyte. Referring to the paleomagnetic studies and the previous and present geological studies, Seoguipo formation corresponds to the Gauss normal epoch, the 2nd-stage of volcanic eruption to Matuyama reversed epoch, and the 3rd-, 4th-, and 5th-stages to Brunhes normal epoch. Therefore, the Seoguipo formation is mostly sedimented during late Pliocene and/or presumably extended to the early Pleistocene. The rocks of the 2nd- to 5th-stage are formed later than this.
Dust samples collected from air in metropolitan areas of Busan and Ulsan were analyzed by phase contrast microscopy, phase contrast dispersion microscopy and SEM. Asbestos concentration in dust samples was lower than detection limit. Many fibrous materials were observed in dust samples, but most of them were organic fibers. Inorganic fibers such as rock fiber, ceramic fiber and gypsum were contained in the samples and non-fibrous minerals such as quartz, calcite and feldspar were also occasionally observed. Domestic law requires that asbestos in air dust is mainly analyzed by phase contrast microscopy. From this study, however, precise analysis of asbestos was almost impossible by this method only. As indicated in JIS method of Japan, therefore, count and identification of asbestos were more efficient by dispersion staining method after removing organic materials in samples by low temperature incinerator.

This study showed that the highest temperature point of the Dongrae thermal spring in Pusan was moved to the north direction of the Dongrae fault as times goes by. The Br concentration(1.5mg/L) in Dongrae thermal waters indicated the influence of 2% seawater mixing. If the simple mixing without hydrochemical reaction occurs between seawater and thermal water, the concentration of Mg will be about 20mg/L. But the low concentration(0.1 mg/L) of Mg, contrary to high concentration(10 mg/L) of surrounding groundwater not affected by thermal water, suggested the thermal water, seawater and rock interactions. The calculation of saturation index(SI) by using the geochemical code of EQ3NR showed that the Mg in thermal groundwater, which was introduced by seawater, was removed by the precipitation of Antigorite (SI: log Q/K =71.753, $Mg_{48}Si_{24}O_{85}(OH)_{62}$) and Tremolite (SI: 8.463, $Ca_2Mg_5Si_8O_{22}(OH)_2$), Talc (SI: 6.409, $Mg_3Si_4O_{10}(OH)_2$), Dolomite (SI: 2.014, $CaMg(CO_3)_2$), Chrysotile (SI: 3.698, $Mg_3Si_2O_5(OH)_4$) in the crack of fault zone. The highest temperature point in the study area will move to north direction and stop in the Jangjun area without the input of seawater.

In order to examine the primary trends and characteristics of geological lineaments along the southwestern boundary of Okcheon zone, we carried out the analysis of geological lineament trends over six selected sub-areas using Landsat-5 TM images and digital elevation model. The trends of lineaments is determined by a minimum variance method, and the resulting geological lineament map can be obtained through generalized Hough transform. We have corrected look direction biases reduces the interpretability of remotely sensed image. An approach of histogram modification is also adopted to extract drainage pattern specifically in alluvial plains. The lineament extracting method adopted in this study is very effective to analyze geological lineaments, and that helps estimate geological trends associated various with the tectonic events. In six sub-areas, the general trends of lineaments are characterized NW, NNW, NS-NNE, and NE directions. NW trends in Cretaceous volcanic rocks and Jurassic granite areas may represent tension joints that developed by rejuvenated end of the Early Cretaceous left-lateral strike-slip motion along the Honam Shear Zone, while NE and NS-NNE trends correspond to fault directions which are parallel to the above Shear Zone. NE and NW trends in Granitic Gneiss are parallel to the direction of schitosity, and NS-NNE and NE trends are interpreted the lineation by compressive force which acted by right-lateral strike-slip fault from late Triassic to Jurassic. And in foliated Granite, NE and NNE trends are coincided with directions of ductile foliation and Honam Shear Zone, and NW-NNW trends may be interpreted direction of another compressional foliation (Triassic to Early Jurassic) or end of the Early Cretaceous tensional joints. We interpreted NS-NNE direction lineation is related with the rejuvenated Chugaryung Fault System.

Landslide researches are divided to a method of interrelationship for various factors, method of predicting landslide possibility, and method of estimating landslide risk which are occurring landslides in the natural slope. Most of landslides occurred in natural slope are caused by a heavy rainfall in summer season. Weathered soil layer located in upper side of rock mass was occurred. As well as, they are announced to have an influence to geometry, geology, soil characteristics, and precipitation in the natural slope. In order to investigate and interpret the variety of landslides from field investigation to risk analysis, landslide analysis process due to geotechnical and geological opinions are systematically demanded. In this research, the study area is located in Macheon area, Gyeongsangnam-do and performed the landslide investigation. From the results of landslide investigation and analysis, optimized standard model based on natural landslide is proposed to high technical method of landslide investigation and interpretation.
The northern extension of the Dongrae Fault is inferred to transect the Ulsan Fault in the Gueo-ri area, Oedong-eup, ~15 km SE of Gyeongju City, Gyeongbuk province, S Korea. We conducted geological and geophysical (magnetic, electrical resistivity, and frequency domain electromagnetic) surveys to identify the extent and orientation of the Dongrae Fault in this region. Through joint interpretation of the geological and geophysical data sets, we confirm the presence of the Dongrae Fault and determine its strike ($N14^{\circ}E$). The Dongrae Fault is thought to cross the Ulsan Fault near Ipsil Bridge in the Gwangeo-ri area. Geophysical surveying revealed a fault damage zone that widens to the south, with a typical width of >200 m. Geological field surveys did not delineate the geometry of the Dongrae Fault because alluvial deposits overlie the fault in this area.
