  • Structural inversion refers to the reverse reactivation of extensional faults that influence basin shortening accommodated by contractional faults or folds. On the Korean peninsula, Miocene inversion structures have been found, but the Cretaceous rocks on Geoje Island may have undergone inversion as early as the Upper Cretaceous. To evaluate the structural inversion on Geoje Island, located on the eastern side of South Korea, and to determine the effects of preexisting weakness zones, field-based geometric and kinematic analyses of faults were performed. The lithology of Geoje Island is dominated by hornfelsified shale, siltstone, and sandstone in the Upper-Cretaceous Seongpori formation. NE and NW-oblique normal faults, conjugate strike-slip (NW-sinistral transpressional and E-W-dextral transtensional) faults, and NE-dextral transpressional faults are the most prominent structural features in Geoje Island. Structural inversion on Geoje Island was evidenced by the sinistral and dextral transpressional reactivation of the NW and NE-trending oblique normal faults respectively, under WNW-ESE/NW-SE compression, which was the orientation of the compressive stress during the Late Cretaceous to Early Cenozoic.

  • The status of Pinworm (Enterobius vermicularis) egg positive rate of Primary school children in Geoje island was investigated by using adhesive cellotape anal swap method, in September, 2002. Total egg positive rates of E. vermicularis were 9.8% (74/754) and those of male and female were 10.8% and 8.7%, respectively. Among three schools examined, Myeongsa primary school showed the highest egg positive rate (12.6%) followed by Yeoncho [9.8% (26/266)] and Geoje[9.1% (35/385)]. As for the age groups, the 2nd grade had the highest egg positive rate (15.3%), whereas the 5th grade showed the lowest egg positive rate (2.6%). The above result led us to confirm that the egg positive rates of E. vermicularis in primary school children in Geoje island were not significantly different from the those in the whole country including urban and rural areas, showing more than 10%.

  • Immersed tunnel had been a rather new term in Korea before Busan-Geoje fixed link project was started and became known through the media. Although Korean is unfamiliar with the immersed tunnel, this construction method has a long history in the world. Busan-Geoje Fixed Link immersed tunnel consist of 18 elements and each element is approximately 180m long. These tunnel elements are prefabricated of reinforced concrete in a temporary dry dock and are towed to the site and lowered into final position in a dredged trench and are placed on a screeded gravel bed directly without temporary support.

  • The GK immersed tunnel as a part of the Busan-Geoje Fixed Link Project, introduced the immersed tunnel method into Korea for the first time. This challeging project to be completed in 2010 will open a new era to link oceans of the world with optimized design and safety for future use. The immersed tunnel method would possibly suitable for use in construction of a sub sea tunnel from Korea to Japan and from Korea to China that could potentially be built in the distant future. We hope the techniques learned from the Busan-Geoje Fixed Link Project can be applied to further projects in the near future.

  • The purpose of this study is to find out the characteristics of landform in Geoje-Do using GIS and DTED data. The characteristics of landform in Geoje-Do are as follows; First, the height-range of Geoje-Do is $0{\sim}580m$, and the average elevation of it is 124m. Volcanic and granite region is mainly appeared at high elevation-region. But, we can't find out outstanding difference of elevation, according to its geology. The second. the slope-range of Geoje-Do is $0{\sim}52$ degree, and the average slope of it is 17.6 degree. The slope of volcanic and granite area is more steeper than any other region. But the results of analysis of the geology in Geojo-Do, don't show outstanding difference of the slope. The third, the area-rate of the aspect of Geoje-Do is almost same in all direction. And the area-rate of south-west direction is the highest. According to the geology of Geoje-Do, granite is distributed the most widely, and the area of volcanic and granite occupy 60% of entire island's area. According to analysis of influence of geology with elevation, geology has little relationship with elevation. According to analysis of geology and drainage network, streams are inclined to be developed well in Alluvium area. Drainage network is well developed throughout the entire island, except southeast area. The highest order of stream is 4 in 1:25,000 topographic map. The density of stream in Geoje-Do is very high, such as 1.6. The bifurcation-ratio of stream is also higher than 4 in all order. The length-ratio of stream is ranged from 1.24 to 3.25. According to the relationship between order and elevation. order is the greater, elevation is the lower. According to the relationship between order and slope, order is the greater, slope is the gentler. In this study, we use DTED Data, and compare it with topographic map data. According to the comparison, there is a little difference between DTED data and topographic map data. Therefore, to use DTED data in landform analysis, it is required coordinate matching process. This process is very important, and take very long time. Thus, if you use DTED in landform analysis, some processes are required. DTED data can be taken very easily, but its using is not simple. Because coordinate adjust is very hard work.

  • To study characteristics of the water quality in the Hansan-Geoje bay, we analyzed the long term monitoring data collected at the two sites during the period of 1987~2010. The trophic state of the waters in Hansan-Geoje bay was the mesotrophic level by the classification of Wasmud et al.[2001]. The water nutrients increased steadily from a wet season (Aug.), it reached the maximum concentration peak in a dry season (Nov.), and then decreased steadily to the winter, it reached at the minimum value in May in the next year. The result of factor analysis divided the waters of Hansan-Geoje bay into the five factors (nutrient, season, inflow land water, pollution, internal production) and the factors represented the 76.82% on the status of the waters. According to time series analysis, temperature, DO and bottom DIP were increased, and pH and COD were decreased during the period of 1987~2010. In particular, the fluctuation trend of DIN has been turned from oversupply to shortage by the N/P ratio since before and after 1990's. The water quality of the Hansan-Geoje bay has been recovered except DIP since 1987, despite of its geographical characteristic which is a general semi-closesd bay and a massive aqua-culture ground. To preserve the waters in Hansan-Geoje bay, we need to know on the cause of the increase or accumulation of DIP, and we should continue to study on the interrelation between the aqua-culture and water environment.

  • Most of Korean farms have been developed in the semi-closed bay, and its position is very vulnerable to the coastal contamination due to the long term and the high density. So, mariculture management is very essential for the sustainable aquaculture. Some of the specific ways would be the assessment of the optimal stocking density for mariculture management zone and this has to consider both the suitable site selection and the assessment of ecological carrying capacity. Habitat suitability index(0.0 totally unsuitable habitat, 1.0 optimum habitat) and ecological indicator(Filtration pressure indicator) was used to assess the stocking density for oyster farms in Geoje-Hansan Bay. Geoje Bay showed the higher habitat suitability index value 0.75 than Hansan Bay 0.53, indicating that Geoje Bay is more suitable for oyster farming. Ecological indicator showed different stocking density according to the coastal characteristics in Geoje-Hansan Bay. Consequently, it is desirable that the stocking density in Geoje Bay should reduce average 40% and Hansan Bay, average 60% than present, in order to meet the ecological carrying capacity. The assessment of the stocking density could solve various problems such as the coastal contamination, environmental aggravation and the productivity decrease and this study could be a scientific basis to establish the policies for mariculture management.

  • The residence time measures the time spent by a water parcel or a pollutant in a given water body. So residence time of water is widely used as an indicator of how a substance will remain in an estuary and it is used to enable comparisons among different water bodies. To estimate residence time of particulate matters from land and aquaculture, EFDC that includes particle tracking model was applied to the Geoje Bay. Modelled average residence time was about 65 days in the inner part. It meant it takes about 2 months for substance from land and aquaculture to be transported to the outside of Geoje Bay. The results indicated that residence time varied spatially throughout Geoje Bay depending on tidal flushing and, in general conditions, tidal flushing exerts the greatest influence to the flushing of Geoje Bay. This reveals relationships between residence times of particulate matters and physical properties of the bay and Geoje Bay is vulnerable to water quality problem.

  • The seasonal variation in the proximate composition, pH, and glycogen contents of oysters Crassostrea gigas collected in Geoje and Jaran Bays on the southern coast of Korea was studied between March 2012 and February 2013. In the Geoje Bay oysters, the moisture content was 77.49-81.50 g/100 g, lipids ranged between 1.22 and 2.47 g/100 g, proteins between 9.46 and 13.11 g/100 g, and ash between 1.88 and 2.58 g/100 g. In the Jaran Bay oysters, the moisture content was 74.22-82.05 g/100 g, lipids comprised 1.32-2.37 g/100 g, proteins 9.19-13.35 g/100 g, and ash 1.96-2.45 g/100 g. The moisture content was highest in October and January in Geoje and Jaran Bay, respectively, and tended to increase from July until September. The highest protein levels occurred in August in both bays, which coincided with the timing of oocyte maturation, and then decreased at the beginning of total spawning. The highest lipid levels occurred in April in Geoje Bay, and February in Jaran Bay. The glycogen content was 0.40-2.28 g/100 g in Geoje Bay, and 0.61-3.53 g/100 g in Jaran Bay, and was highest in February and decreased from March onwards. The lowest glycogen content occurred in September and then increased from October onwards. The pH ranged between 6.29 and 6.48, and 6.32 and 6.59, for Geoje and Jaran Bay, respectively, and was highest in February.

  • Hydrodynamic condition can be used to predict particle movement within water column and the results used to optimize environmental conditions for effective site selection, setting of environmental quality standard, waste dispersion, and pathogen transfer. To predict the extent of movement of particle from land, 3D hydrodynamic model that includes particle tracking module was applied to Geoje Bay and to calibrate particle tracking model, floating buoy measurement is operated. The model results show that short time is required for particles released into system from river to be transported to the shellfish farming area. It takes about 2 days for the particles to shellfish farming area under mean flow condition. It meant Geoje Bay, especially shellfish farming area is vulnerable to anthropogenic waste from river.
