  • This paper describes the applicability of geogrid with I-type coupling system, which permits vertical displacement on back fill ground of the reinforced retaining wall and also minimize the damage between block and geogrid. The improvement of coupling method allowed the reduction of approximately 700 mm in the existing geogrid, and as a result, the tensile strength at the coupling joint showed approximately 53% of the maximum tensile strength. It is expected from the laboratory investigations that the coupling strength of geogrid with the combination of in-situ supporting material should be predominant in the field condition.

  • This paper describes a field experience on geogrid-reinforced soil walls rising up to 29.5m in height. Since experiences of design and construction on very high-raised geogrid reinforced soil wall were limited, thorough design and construction management was performed for safe construction of the wall. Regarding design of the wall, both internal and external stabilities were examined based on the design guideline specified by FHWA and overall slope stability analyses were performed by using Bishop simplified method. Moreover, a series of instrumentations were performed. The results of instrumentation for two tiered reinforced soil wall showed that not only the deformations of both the wall face and the reinforcement but also the horizontal earth pressures acting on the wall facing were very small. These results indicate that the reinforced soil wall technology can be applied successfully for high-raised tiered wall more than 20m heights and FHWA design guideline is very conservative for that large wall.

  • Reinforced earth structure has been regarded as general structure in order to achieve efficient land utilization as well as securing safety in railway service lines in other countries, but there are no construction actual results in Korea. In this study, the soil-geogrid interaction mechanism was investigated experimentally and numerical analysis was performed to predict Pull-out behaviour of geogrid embedded in reinforced earth body. This experimental data and analysis result can not contribute to understand the soil-geogrid interaction mechanism at soil-geogrid interface but also be used in design practice of the railway reinforced earth structures.

  • The model tests are conducted to assess the behavior characteristics of geogrid reinforced soil walls according to different surcharge pressures and reinforcement spacings. The models are built in the box having dimension, 100cm tall, 140cm long, and 100cm wide. The reinforcement used is geogrid(tensile strength 2.26t/m). Decomposed ganite soil(SM) is used as a backfill material. The strain gauges and LVDTs are Installed to obtain the strain in the reinforcements and the displacements of the wall face. From the results, it can be concluded that the more the reinforcement tensile strength increases, the more the wall displacements and the geogrid strains decreases. The maximum wall displacements and geogrid strains of the model walls occur due to the uniform surcharge pressure at the 0.7H from the bottom of the wall. The horizontal displacements of the wall face nonlinearly increase with the increase of surcharge pressures, and this nonlinear behavior is significantly presented for larger surcharge due to the nonlinear tensile strength-strain relationship of the reinforcements.

  • Retaining walls with reinforced earth have been constructed around the world. The use of reinforced earth is a recent development in the design and construction of earth-retaining structure. It is believed that reinforced retaining wall has some advantages which make construction quite simple basically. It wilt take short construction time relatively, comparing, fur example with reinforced-concrete retaining wall. In addition, low price and easy construction will be good attractive points in practical point of view. In this study, five field-tests monitoring data for lateral pressures on geogrid-reinforced retaining wall have been compiled and evaluated. Based on field-tests it is found that horizontal displacements of the facing was measured to be about 0.19∼0.76% and that the maximum tensile strains of reinforcement was evaluated to be about 0.66∼1.98%. The maximum tensile strains, measured from each site, do not reach 5% of the practical allowable strain of the geogrid. And also it is found that the lateral pressure distributions of reinforced-earth retaining wall are close to a trapezoid shape like a flexible retaining wall system, instead of a theoretical triangular shape.

  • In the design and construction of Keystone block reinforced wall with geogrid, previous on the behaviour of wall in curved area is required. This study is to investigate the structural stability of wall and problems during construction in curved area. Previous analyzing methods, usually used for straight area of wall, have been reviewed to find any problems in applying to stability analysis of curved area. Thus, the purpose of this study is to show how to analyse the straight area of Keystone block wall first, and then turn this to use for analyzing various significance, concerning the design or construction of curved high keystone block wall. and the stress behavior on retaining wall between straight and curved conditions by F.E.M, using the shell analysis theory.

  • The objective of this study is to suggest the optimal method for reinforced earth retaining wall through the appropriate selection of reinforcing materials, development of design criteria. Thus, the efficient land utilization and securing safety in the train operation in service lines could be achieved. For this goal, a large scale shear laboratory test was carried out to evaluate the reinforced effect of earth body reinforced by attachment-type geogrid.

  • This paper deal with the analysis of the causes about case of collapsed reinforced-soil retaining wall. The analysis of the cause was carried through experimentation, slop stability analysis and literature study. The experimentation treated the large direct shear test, the hydraulic conductivity test and the other basic test through backfill extraction from collapsed reinforced-soil retaining wall. The ultimate tensile strength was established by rib tensile strength test of geogrid. The analysis of internal and external stability of reinforced-soil retaining wall was performed on the basis of parameters. The result of analysis, reinforced-soil retaining wall and the slope at the dry season are stable. However, the factors that fine-grained soil at hydrometer test exceed the standard of the design, rainfall duration is too long at the time of collapse and monthly pricipitation is heavy, which are causes of the collapse.

  • In the applying of the reinforced soil method, it would be possible to obtain reinforcement effect more than before in terms of economic if high water content clayey soils could be used as embanking material. Futhermore it would be possible to expect the expansion of the applying field of reinforced soil method too. In this study, the authors describe the analysis results on the behavior of 5 meter high walls reinforced with nonwoven geotextile having the permeability and woven geotextile or geogrid having large tensile strength on the soil ground. The behavior of the walls were investigated for about 100 days after construction and the deformations of reinforcements, lateral soil pressures, vertical and horizontal displacements of the walls were examined by automatical measuring system. It was found that this kinds of reinforcing system might effectively improve the performance of the steep walls by virtue of the reciprocal action between soil and reinforcements, and it might be concluded that construction of the clayey reinforced soil walls with three kinds of geotextiles could be done successfully even on the comparative weak ground.

  • This paper presents the results of instrumentation of a two-level of soil-reinforced segmental retaining wall. Instrumentation items include the lateral wall displacements and the geogrid strains at several locations. The instrumentation is still long carried in order to examine long-term behavior. The result indicate that the upper wall has a significant effect on the behavior of the lower wall doubling the wall moved. The wall also exhibits significant post-construction movements that had ceased several months after the wall completed. The implication of the findings from this study was discussed in great detail.
