  • This study is to analyze on territorial education described in geography textbooks in Korea and Japan. The following is the result that shows similarities and differences of the geography textbooks when it comes to territorial education. Korea and Japan have a contrasting territorial background. However, both countries start their territorial education by learning the location and shape of their country. Japanese geography textbooks focus on what people in the world think of Japan, but in case of Korea, the geography textbooks focus on how Koreans look at the world. In short, the territorial education in Japan try to emphasize Japan from the view point of the world. The next common ground is that the two countries provide territorial models in their geography textbooks in order to increase understanding. However, the Japanese students are provided with these territory models much earlier than Korean students and these models help them visualize and solidify their concept of territory. And, the two countries both put great importance on teaching territorial sea. In Japan, they try to include EEZ(Exclusive Economic Zone) in their territory. Considering these facts, it can be concluded that Japan is enlarging their concept of national territory as maritime territory. Lastly, after learning of territory the two countries both treat on territorial problems. But Korea treats passively territorial problem as such Dokdo, but Japan treats actively their territorial problems. Like that, the contents of territorial education described in geography textbooks in Korea and Japan are similar in terms of selection, but differ in quality in terms of organization. Therefore, future territorial education in Korea will be actively and successively done through succession and sequence of geography curriculum.

  • This study analyzes the geomorphic environments of river channels and properties of sediments in the Naeseong-River basin, a branch of Nakdong-River. While the area at NU1 located in the uppermost reaches indicates the landscapes with the gravel riverbeds, the sand riverbeds can be seen in the downstream of NU2 whose basin consists mostly of the granite regolith. The downstream of NU2 has the braided channels in the beds and this may be due to the large quantities of sand particles supply to the bed under the favorable geologic and geomorphic conditions, properties of river flowing within the floodplains less resistant to the erosion and great fluctuations of discharges. Whereas the river at NU2 may seem that sand particles are actively eroded during the high water-level periods, the particles may be actively deposited during the periods at NM2 and NL2. Moreover, in the reaches of NU2 to NM1 and NL1 to NL2, the mean grain sizes of sediments increase downstream suggesting the other supplies of coarse sediments from the lower order streams running the steep slopes because the river flows in the areas consisting of the metamorphic rocks rather than the granites and shows the properties of incised meander.

  • The aim of this study is to examine the changes of approach methods of research framework in the history of Korean economic geography during the last fifty years($1956{\sim}2005$). The five factors that have influenced Korean economic geography are Korean geography, European, American, and Japanese geography, fundamental theories of economics and business administration, regional problems, and culture. The study of Korean economic geography can be divided into four periods: 'period of cradle of economic geography($1956{\sim}1962$)', 'period of establishment of economic geography(1963$\sim$later 1970s)', 'period of leap of economic geography(the former half of 1980s$\sim$the former half of 1990s)', and 'period of transition of economic geography (since later 1990s)'. And research framework of Korean economic geography has changed from the regional structure theory in 'period of leap' to the spatial system of economies and network theory in 'period of transition'. Spatial system of economies and network theory consists of spatial system of world economies, spatial system of national economies, spatial system of regional economies, spatial network of enterprise economies, and spatial network of information economies.

  • GIS is considered as a big industry or business in the field of applied sciences. Recently GIS market in Korea is growing rapidly for LBS, Telematics, Web-geographic information services. This paper attempts to focus on the interrelationship between GIS and geography, and the question of how geography emerged out of intellectual trends within GIS to examine possible contribution of geographers in GIS fields. The application of GIS appears to be largely technical in nature. It is important for the GIS operator and the consumer of GIS products to be aware of the geographical concepts that underpin GIS operations. Also it is seen that many departments of geography in Korea have attempted to actively adopt GIS into their education program, with aim to improve the status. GIS has promoted a shift towards applied geography from academic geography. GIS researchers and educators in geography are concerned not with technology, but with the basic concepts and the issues relating to its use, in comparison with other academic fields. It is the responsibility of geography community to make sure that our students receive a geographical education that includes problem-solving, critical thinking and technical capabilities. It is concluded that promoting GIS technology in geography curriculum is essential for the further expansion of geography within GIS and also for the survival of geography.

  • Coastal dunes have many environmental and ecological socio-economic importances; various human activities, however, have impaired their structures and functions over the years. In 2016, environmental survey on coastal sand dune was carried out to report the present status and update the coastal sand dune list in 2001. This research analyzed the survey data in terms of geomorphological and socio-economic aspects. A list of the 189 coastal sand dune and information was updated by province. A 36.5% reduction in coastal sand dune area have been identified for using agricultural land, development area since the approximately 1940-50s. Development area in coastal sand dune covered small area as 5%, the use intensity was relatively hard. Furthermore, the difference by province also showed. Approximately 80% of the development area was concentrated in 20% of total sand dune several sand dune. It is generally accepted that coastal sand dunes were exposed high development pressure. However the result means that the general brief dose not apply for all sand dune. Therefore, characteristics of each sand dune should be analyzed and concerned the diverse management plans.

  • Following the previous study, we report a complementary dating data on the silty layers deposited in paleo-tidal conditions of the study area, Dangjeong-ri, Seocheon-gun and suggest coastal terrain development processes over the past 200,000 years. Based on the dating results, the silty layers distributed up to 25 m above mean sea level were deposited between 171 and 183 ka, and the gravel layer deposited in a fluvial environment of a paleo-Dangjeong stream was found to have formed between 78 and 83 ka. Considering relative altitudes of distribution, an uplift rate of the study area in the western coast is judged to be relatively 0.5~0.7 low to that of Pohang area in the eastern coast. Compared to Busan and Sacheon areas in the southern coast, it is assumed that an uplift rate of the study area shows a similar level with those during the late Quaternary.

  • The geographical knowledge is composed of academic geographical knowledge, school geographical knowledge, applied geographical knowledge and popular geographical knowledge according to the diverse social need and demand. And the geographical knowledge has developed through the knowledge circulation system, which is connected to knowledge production, delivery, application and to reproduction among these knowledge fields. The discontinuity of knowledge circulation can lead to crisis of geographical whole. Therefore, for sustainable development of geography, it is necessary to firmly build a virtuous circulation system of geographical knowledge which is linked to a knowledge production and accumulation by an academic geography, knowledge delivery by a school geography, knowledge social application by an applied geography, knowledge application in everyday life by a popular geography and knowledge reproduction by an academic geography.

  • The study deals with classification of drought-flood intensity using Z index based on the precipitation data in Hyesan of the past 50 years(1957~2006). The frequencies of years and four seasons of flood drought and their change features have also been analyzed based on tendency analysis and MESA and wavelet methods. Results show that the annual and seasonal frequencies of flood-drought exceed 24% in Hyesan and flood-drought disasters have been high frequency. Inter-decadal variability seems to be clear in autumn but those of inter-annual variability are obvious in other three seasons and years. Recently the probability of drought disaster become higher in autumn. The flood disaster in other three seasons and years are estimated to become higher in the future.

  • This study is to discuss on intrinsic justification of 'citizenship' and 'spaces of citizenship' to inquiry possibility of citizenship education through geography subject. According to Peters' educational view as forms of knowledge and initiation, citizenship was intrinsically justified through examination of forms of geographical knowledge. The analysis of paradigms in geography shows that 'the human' and 'the social' are generally combined in 'space'-centered language and ideologies through post-positivism. That is, it refuses the concept of physical space which is value neutral, and seeks turn to spaces of citizenship which is value-intrinsic through social space theory. Given that changes in the forms of geographical knowledge lead changes in content knowledge of geography subject, citizenship is to be justified intrinsically. Thus, citizenship as content knowledge of geography subject is to be justified not extrinsically through acceptance of social studies' educational aim in itself but intrinsically through forms of geographical knowledge. And geographical education as initiation into value and belief of citizenship based on these spaces of citizenship is not about making students have arrived at a destination, but about them travel with a different view.
