  • Annual variations of inorganic nutrients such as nitrate(+nitrite), phosphate and silicate in association with thermocline were investigated in the upper 200 m of the water column at KODES Long-term Monitoring (KOMO) station in the northeast equatorial Pacific from 1995 to 2002. Global climatic disturbances such as El Nino and La Nina, should have affected KODES area during the study period. In 1995-97 and 2000-2002, a thermocline where temperatures rapidly decrease with depth, was formed at 50-70 m water depth. Nutrient depletion, specially for nitrate and phosphate, was extended down to approximately 50 m depth, which coincided with the surface mixed layer depth. In 1998 and 1999, however a very fluctuating thermocline was observed at 20-100 m water depth. In the photic zone (up to 100 m depth), depth integration of nitrate, phosphate and silicate ranged from 2.02 to $23.14\;gN/m^2$, from 0.87 to $4.05\;gP/m^2$ and from 35.67 to $176.21\;gSi/m^2$, respectively. As a result of changes in the water column structures, nutrient concentrations also showed fluctuation parallel to the changes of thermocline in the study area.

  • Deep-sea Resources Research Center (DRRC) has been using a free-fall grab (FFG) for the resource evaluation of polymetallic nodules in the KODOS (Korea Deep Ocean Study) area, NE Pacific, since 1992. A FFG model (Model 4200, Benthos) adapting one glass buoy system (diameter 17 inch, net buoyance 25.4 kg) has been used until 1993. Since then, DRRC has carried out a study to increase the recovery rate of FFG and it was found that a revised system adapting an additional buoy (diameter 10 inch, net buoyance 4.5 kg) gives improved results. The nodule sampling tests were performed using two different models for the same study area and the resulting recovery rates were compared. The result shows no distinct difference in recovery time between two models, but average recovery rate of the revised model was increased to 99.44% from 96.06% of the original model.

  • The failure mechanism of a deep hard rock tunnel under high geostress and high geothermalactivity is extremely complex. Uniaxial compression tests of granite at different temperatures were conducted. The complete stress-strain curves, mechanical parameters and macroscopic failure types of the rock were analyzed in detail. The brittleness index, which represents the possibility of a severe brittleness hazard, is proposed in this paperby comparing the peak stress and the expansion stress. The results show that the temperature range from 20 to $60^{\circ}C$ is able to aggravate the brittle failure of hard rock based on the brittleness index. The closure of internal micro cracks by thermal stress can improve the strength of hard rock and the storage capacity of elastic strain energy. The failure mode ofthe samples changes from shear failure to tensile failure as the temperature increases. In conclusion, the brittle failure mechanism of hard rock under the action of thermal coupling is revealed, and the analysis result offers significant guidance for deep buried tunnels at high temperatures and under high geostress.

  • Total magnetic field measurements were performed to study paleomagnetism of three seamounts (OSM7, OSM8-1, and OSM8-2) to the northwest of the Marshall Islands in the western Pacific. The study area is located at the Ogasawara Fracture Zone which is a boundary between the Pigafetta and East Mariana basins. The magnetic parameters and paleopoles of three seamounts were derived from inversion of the measured magnetic field. The goodness-of-fit ratio of OSM7 is too low to be included to the estimation of parameters. The complex magnetic anomalies of center, scarcity of flank rift zones and steep slope at OSM7 suggest that the multiple intrusions of magma converge into the center of volcanic edifice. Inclination calculated from the magnetic anomalies of OSM8-1 and OSM8-2 is $-41.2^{\circ}$, and the paleolatitude calculated from the inclination is $23.6^{\circ}S$. The corresponding paleopoles for OSM8-1 and OSM8-2 are $(24^{\circ}42'W,\;48^{\circ}54'N)\;and\;(18^{\circ}18'W,\;48^{\circ}30'N)$, respectively. In comparison with the apparent polar wander path (APWP) of the Pacific plate, the paleopoles are close to 129-Ma pole. The paleopoles and paleolatitudes of OSM8-1 and OSM8-2 suggest that they were formed at similar time and location. The seamounts have drifted northward about $41^{\circ}$ from the paleolatitude to present latitude of seamounts.

  • To delineate Late Pleistocene paleoceanographic change of the West Pacific, we analyzed the oxygen and carbon isotopic ratios of two planktonic foraminifera species (G. sacculifer and N. dutertrei) from a piston core (KODOS-313) taken from the West equatorial Pacific, and they are compared with the published results of the East Pacific (ODP site 847 and RC 11-210), in terms of relative amounts and mass accumulation rates of $CaCO_3$ and eolian component, back to marine isotopic stage (MIS) 6. Differences in oxygen and carbon isotope values between two foraminifear species ($0.75%_{\circ}$ in ${\delta}^{18}O$, $0.05%_{\circ}$ in ${\delta}^{13}C$) are less than those of the East Pacific ($1.30%_{\circ}$ in ${\delta}^{18}O$, $0.14%_{\circ}$ in ${\delta}^{13}C$), which indicates smaller vertical contrasts in both temperature and nutrient between mixing-zone and thermocline in the West Pacific. Strong deviation in${\delta}^{18}O$ of G. sacculifer from SPECMAP suggests the carbonate fraction of KODOS-313 was subjected to partial dissolution by bottom water under lysocline. Lower accumulation rates of $CaCO_3$ and eolian component during glacial times are likely due to low sedimentation rate (ave. 0.75 cm/1000 yr) combined with carbonate dissolution in KODOS-313 site. However, the high $CaCO_3$ contents during the glacial periods clearly follow the general pattern of equatorial Pacific ocean.
