The Effects of Different Types of Genres and Tasks on College Students' English Listening Comprehension

  • This study investigates the effects of different types of genre and tasks on college students' English listening comprehension. 104 college students were assigned to Argumentative (AG), Causal and Evaluation (CE), and Narrative (NA) group. They report their listening comprehension through gap-filling (GF), summary (ST), and multiple-choice comprehension task (MC). Results showed that different genre groups were significantly different on overall tasks. Moreover, results from each group also presented that different mean scores on each task indicated a statistical significance. Proficiency levels, higher and lower level group, showed a significant effect for the task on listening comprehension. The results of the statistical analysis, using One-way ANOVA indicated that genre significantly affects Korean college students' listening comprehension, and implied that listening comprehension sores for each genre were also substantially different. Different genre groups resented significant different in overall listening comprehension tasks.

  • Stone is a hybrid genre movie in which two different film genres coexist; one is a gangster movie, the other Baduk movie. This film deals with a relationship between an old gangster boss and a young Baduk player. The coexistence of two different worlds becomes a reason for a unique ambiance of this film, because Stone is dynamic and brutal as much as static and meditative. Firstly, this article aims to analyze the narrative structure and characters of this film comparing with conventions of gangster movie genre, especially 'jopok film' of Korean cinema. Secondly, we examine characters of this film and their relationship. Since the economic crisis under the IMF structure, a great part of korean gangster movie has represented the weakness of the fatherhood and the disorganization of family. However, in Stone, the friendship between two heroes, Namhae and Minsu, turns to a father-son relationship. In this way, Stone transformed conventions of film genre.

  • Since genre of popular music began to classified, Alternative Music has been music form with most complex and diverse sub genre. This paper focused on mostly Alternative Rock, which began to attract attention since the 1990's, and analysed the cause for ambiguity of this genre. Therefore we can examine the inevitable limitation of traditional - based on musical form only - classification.

  • We propose a unique client-driven music genre classification solution, that can identify the music genre using a deep convolutional neural network operating on the time-domain signal. The proposed method uses the client device (Jetson TX2) computational resources to identify the music genre. We use the industry famous GTZAN genre collection dataset to get reliable benchmarking performance. HTTP live streaming (HLS) client and server sides are designed locally to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method. HTTP persistent broadcast connection is adapted to reduce corresponding responses and network bandwidth. The proposed model can identify the genre of music files with 97% accuracy. Due to simplicity and it can support a wide range of client hardware.

  • In this paper, I study the development of character in the fantasy genre of trans-media contents. In this study, I studied the novel " Songs of Fire and Ice " from the existing fantasy genre, and found that the content was expanded to include characters and features that were important to compared with the other fantasy genre content. Late fantasy genre writers since The Lord of the Rings have inherited a sort of genre of standards, and have established the genre of high fantasy. The genre has a typical characteristic of heroic characters or group adventures, based on the stage 12 heroic epic by mythologist Joseph Campbell. So the body of this paper will explore the journey of the heroic character in " Songs of Fire and Ice" and will be compared to the mythic motif and to the heroic epic narrative, and then find out the exceptional features of " Songs of Fire and Ice " as a fantasy genre.

The Effect of Expected Perspective on the Role of Genre and Attitude toward Utilizing Genre in Broadcast Ad on the Liking of Broadcast Ad Genre (방송광고에서 장르의 역할에 대한 기대관점과 활용에 대한 태도가 방송광고 장르에 대한 호감도에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of expected perspective on the role of genre and attitude toward utilizing genre in broadcast ad on the liking of broadcast ad genre as appeal types of creativity. The results show that there is a significant correlation between macro-environmental expected perspective(MEEP) on the role of genre and a negative attitude toward utilizing genre in broadcast ad. A significant correlation between micro-practical expected perspective(MPEP) and a positive attitude was also found. Consumers with an integrated-situational expected perspective(ISEP) show a more significant relationship with the dual attitude. Consumes with a MPEP have a stronger liking on comparative ad and sex appeal ad, and consumers with an ISEP show a median liking. Consumers with positive attitude have a stronger liking on comparative ad and sex appeal ad, and consumers with a dual attitude show a median liking that is between the positive attitude-based consumers' and negative attitude-based consumers'.

  • This study aims on providing a design technique that expresses aesthetical elements by arranging the analysis of sensual beauty into detailed elements of design from music video outfits by genre of pop music, by observing music videos of female vocalists chosen from each genre of pop music focusing on their fashion. The results of this study are the following. 1. In the genre rock, the sensual beauty of female were expressed with a boyish and neutral style using texture such as leather or denim, and such style had the effect of emphasizing their feminine side even more. 2. In the genre dance music, exposure is extensive compared to other genre using sexy or lingerie look, and I found an ambivalent style of feminism with clothes in the form of drapery using textures such as chiffon and silk, and femme fatale style with textures adhering to the body such as leggings, leotard, and bodysuit. 3. In the genre of rap and hip-hop, clothes from casual and costume-play style were found using training jersey, t-shirt, and denim pants, and emphasized the sensual beauty of women by showing a silhouette with short length and fitting style using shiny textures. 4. In the genre of R&B, there were diverse outfits that suits the characteristics of characters appearing in the stories, or the situation of the story since there are many dramatic representation in the form of story Especially in case of female characters, the feminine side was emphasized staging a feminine style by wearing dresses with the texture of chiffon and silk. Exposure was restrained compared to other genre.

  • Nowadays, 'fusion style' television programs are increasingly found in the production of television program. Originally such a trend has been developed with a purpose of changing tedious cultural program into entertaining style. Recently, however, it has also become as an alternative style of genre which is against from lasciviousness or lewdness of entertaining programs. This study is designed to analyse the characteristics of television production and theorize a producing process of the television genre-over program As a result of various aspects of research, it is found that recent producers who make genre-over program choose any kind of genre which is thought to be needed for their program, without any limitation in terms of methods or skills for specific genre. And with this change of concept for making programs, genre-over programs are newly defined as the entertaining programs, in which its entertaining function is widen and broaden, absorbing the informative function of cultural programs.

  • The aims of this study are to theorize genre convention of the digital games and to draw digital game genre grammar. This study verified the need for game genre and derives FPS Game genre grammar in six features. There is a formulation of the genre theory of meaning to academic researchers who studies digital games. And game designers to provide universal principles of a specific genre that is meaningful. As well as this study found that game play through the convergence of different media genres and the new format of storytelling or do it the potential to generate content may also be expected.

Genre-based Collaborative Filtering Movie Recommendation (장르 기반 Collaborative Filtering 영화 추천)

  • There have been proposed several movie recommendation algorithms based on Collaborative Filtering(CF). CF decides neighbors whose ratings are the most similar to each other and it predicts how well users will like new movies, based on ratings from neighbors. This paper proposes a new method to improve the result predicted by CF based on genres of the movies seen by users. The proposed method can be combined to the most of all existing CF algorithms. In this paper, a performance evaluation has been conducted between an existing simple CF algorithm and CF-Genre that is the proposed genre-based method added to the CF algorithm. The result shows that CF-Genre improves 3.3% in prediction performance over existing CF algorithms.
