  • The monokaryotic strain, Schizophyllum commune strain IUM1114-SS01, was generated from a basidiospore of dikaryotic parental strain IUM1114. It even showed the decolorizing activities for several textile dyes much better than its parental strain. Based on the results of a single-molecule real-time sequencing technology, we present the draft genome of S. commune IUM1114-SS01, comprising 41.1 Mb with GC contents of the genome were 57.44%. Among 13,380 protein-coding genes, 534 genes are carbon hydrate-active enzyme coding genes.

  • Campsis grandiflora (Thunb.) K. Schum is an ornamental species with various useful biological effects. The chloroplast genome of C. grandiflora isolated in Korea is 154,293 bp long (GC ratio: 38.1%) and has four subregions: 84,121 bp of large single-copy (36.2%) and 18,521 bp of small single-copy (30.0%) regions are separated by 24,332 bp of inverted repeat (42.9%) regions including 132 genes (87 protein-coding genes, eight rRNAs, and 37 tRNAs). One single-nucleotide polymorphism and five insertion and deletion (INDEL) regions (40-bp in total) were identified, indicating a low level of intraspecific variation in the chloroplast genome. All five INDEL regions were linked to the repetitive sequences. Seventy-two normal simple sequence repeats (SSRs) and 47 extended SSRs were identified to develop molecular markers. The phylogenetic trees of 29 representative Bignoniaceae chloroplast genomes indicate that the tribe-level phylogenic relationship is congruent with the findings of previous studies.

  • We here report the whole genome sequence of Ligilactobacillus agilis C7 with anti-listerial activity, which was isolated from pig feces. The genome size of L. agilis C7 (~ 3.0 Mb) is relatively larger compared with other L. agilis strains. L. agilis C7 carries three bacteriocin gene clusters encoding garvicin Q, salivaricin A, and Blp family class II bacteriocin. Garvicin Q and salivaricin A are reported to be active against Listeria monocytogenes and Micrococcus luteus, respectively, as well as against other Gram-positive bacteria. Meanwhile, the bacteriocin encoded in the blp cassette was shown to be active against pneumococci, mediating intraspecies competition. This report highlights the potential of L. agilis C7 for the production of bacteriocins inhibiting pathogenic bacteria.

  • The increase in canine skin and soft tissue infections, such as pyoderma and otitis, caused by Staphylococcus schleiferi strains, is of significant zoonotic concern. In this study, we report the first complete genome sequence for a methicillin-resistant clinical isolate of S. schleiferi (MRSS) designated as SS4, obtained from a dog with otitis externa, in Korea. The genome of SS4 strain was of 2,539,409 bp and presented high G+C content ratio (35.90%) with no plasmid. Comparative analysis of SS4 genome revealed that it is closely related to 2142-05 and 5909-02 strains isolated from the canine skin infections in the USA.

  • Rhododendron caucasicum Pall. is a shrub distributed in the mountainous areas of the Caucasus from northeastern Türkiye towards the Caspian Sea. This study reports the first complete chloroplast genome sequence of R. caucasicum. The plastome is 199,487 base pairs (bp) long and exhibits a typical quadripartite structure comprising a large single-copy region of 107,645 bp, a small single-copy region of 2,598 bp, and a pair of identical inverted repeat regions of 44,622 bp each. It contains 143 genes, comprising 93 protein-coding genes, 42 tRNA genes, and eight rRNA genes. The large chloroplast genome size is likely due to the expansion of inverted repeats. A phylogenetic analysis of chloroplast genomes with other Rhododendron species supports previously recognized infrageneric relationship.

  • Lactobacillus amylovorus CACC736 was originated from swine feces in Korea. The complete genome sequences of the strain contained one circular chromosome (2,057,809 base pair [bp]) with 38.2% guanine-cytosine (GC) content and two circular plasmids, namely, pCACC736-1 and pCACC736-2. The predicted protein-coding genes, which are encoding the clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)-associated proteins, biosynthesis of bacteriocin (helveticin J), and the related proteins of the bile, acid tolerance. Notably, the genes related to vitamin B-group biosynthesis (riboflavin and cobalamin) were also found in L. amylovorus CACC736. Collectively, the complete genome sequence of the L. amylovorus CACC736 will aid in the development of functional probiotics in the animal industry.

  • We report the draft genome sequence of Sporobolomyces phaffii RJAF-17, a basidiomycetous yeast strain producing lipoamino acid surfactants, N-palmitoyl leucine and N-parmitoleyl glutamine. The annotation and classification of protein-coding genes provided the basic information for the genome of strain RJAF-17, including prediction of abundant genes as well as detection of genes involved in the biosynthesis of lipoamino acids. With the molecular importance of lipoamino acids as promising alternatives to chemical surfactants, the genomic information of strain RJAF-17 can help us understand the role of biomolecules in yeasts and explore possibilities of large-scale synthesis for industrial applications.

  • Strain Bacillus safensis DMB13 exhibiting protease and lipase activity was isolated from fermented kimchi in the previous study. Phenotypically, strain DMB13 showed no antibacterial activity. Thus, the complete genome sequence was analyzed to understand the phenotype of strain DMB13. The genome is 3,856,276-bp with a G+C content of 41.61 mol% and consists of a single circular 3,849,633-bp chromosome and one circular plasmids. Two genes related to bacteriocin production, skfF and skfG, were identified; however, six other genes in the skf operon were not detected. The genome includes 54 protease- and 5 lipase-encoding genes.
