  • The assembly line balancing problem has been focused by many research works because the efficient management of the assembly line might influence not only the quality of the products but also the working conditions for the workers. This paper deals with U-shape mixed-model assembly line balancing and considers both the processing time and the physical workloads. We suggest the goal programming approach for this situation and to overcome some difficulties of finding optimal solution, we adopt the genetic algorithm that is one of the most promising solution techniques. We tested several test problems and present the results that indicate some improvement for the line balancing as well as the stable performance of the algorithm.

  • The paper discusses the problem of finding the Origin-Destination(O-D) shortest paths in internodal transportation networks with time-schedule constraints. The shortest path problem on the internodal transportation network is concerned with finding a path with minimum distance, time, or cost from an origin to a destination using all possible transportation modalities. The time-schedule constraint requires that the departure time to travel from a transfer station to another node takes place only at one of pre-specified departure times. The scheduled departure times at the transfer station are the times when the passengers are allowed to leave the station to another node using the relative transportation modality. Therefore, the total time of a path in an internodal transportation network subject to time-schedule constraints includes traveling time and transfer waiting time. In this paper, a genetic algorithm (GA) approach is developed to deal with this problem. The effectiveness of the GA approach is evaluated using several test problems.

  • The objective of this research study is to develop the permutation-based genetic algorithm for solving the resource-constrained project scheduling problem in construction engineering by incorporating elitism into genetic algorithm. A key aspect of the algorithm was the development of the elitist roulette selection operator to preserve the best individual solution for the next generation so the improved solution can be obtained. Another notable characteristic is the application of the parallel schedule generation scheme to generate a feasible solution to the problem. Case studies with a standard test problem were presented to demonstrate the performance and accuracy of the algorithm. The computational results indicate that the proposed algorithm produces reasonably good solutions for the resource-constrained project scheduling problem.

  • In order to investigate the pathogenic genes and genetic relationships of Y. pseudotuberculosis, we isolated 9 strains of Y. pseudotuberculosis from about 380 spring water sites in Seoul and carried out antibiotic susceptibility test, biological test and molecular typing. All isolated strains were distributed throughout the northeast area in Seoul (Mt. Bookhan, Mt. Soorak, Mt. Boolam and etc...).Antibiotic susceptibility test revealed that all the strains were susceptible to chloramphenicol, gentamicin, neomycin and amoxicillin/clavulanic acid, but were resistant to novobiocin and vancomycin. • Smoke flavors based on the thermal decomposition of wood have been applied to a variety of food products as an alternative for traditional smoking. Despite its increasing use, the available genotoxicity data on wood smoke flavors (WSF) are still controversial. Thus, potential genotoxic effects of WSF in four short-term in vitro genotoxicity assays were investigated, which included the Ames assay, chromosomal aberration assay, micronucleus test and the alkaline comet assay. WSF did not cause any mutation in the Ames assay using five tester strains at six concentrations of 0.16, 0.31, 0.63, 1.25, 2.5 and 5 ${\mu}l/plate$. To assess clastogenic effect, the in vitro chromosomal aberration assay was performed using Chinese hamster lung cells. No statistically significant increase in the number of metaphases with structural aberrations was observed at the concentrations of 1.25, 2.5, and 5 ${\mu}l/ml$. The in vitro comet assay and micronucleus test results obtained on L5178Y cells also revealed that WSF has no genotoxicity potential, although there was a marginal increase in micronuclei frequencies and DNA damage in the respective micronucleus and comet assays. Taken together, based on the results obtained from these four in vitro studies, it is concluded that WSF is not a mutagenic agent in bacterial cells and causes no chromosomal and DNA damage in mammalian cells in vitro.

  • The dynamic balancing of a rotor system is needed to alleviate the imbalances originating from various sources encountered during blade manufacturing processes and environmental factors. This work aims at developing a comprehensive analysis system which consists of cumulative module of test D/B and selection of optimal control parameters. This system can be used for the dynamic balancing of helicopter rotors based on tracking results from the whirl tower test. For simplicity of the analysis, a linear relation is assumed between the balancing input parameters and the blade track responses leading to influence coefficients and thereby the rotor system identification is made. In addition, the balancing parameters of the individual blades are sought using the genetic algorithm and the effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated in comparison with the test results.

  • The purpose of this study was to find out the effects that daughters' incomplete lactation records affect sire's breeding values through genetic evaluation using RRTDM(random regression test-day model). First, we estimated genetic parameters and breeding values on sires having complete lactation records of daughter by RRTDM, second, we changed complete lactation records of specific sires into incomplete records by various methods. Third, the breeding values were compared between complete and incomplete records. Finally, this study aimed to find out the methods to minimize the estimation errors of young bulls' breeding values. Data used in this study were collected from the dairy herd improvement program, and a total of 97,562 records were composed of 10,929 first parity with both parents known, since 1999. Breeding values on the daughters from randomly chosen sires were calculated and compared with among 90 day, 150day, and 200 day's incomplete records. For milk yields, sire's ranks of breeding values used by complete lactation records were very different from sire's ranks of breeding values obtained by incomplete lactation records(Rank_90 cut, 150cut, 200 cut). The differences were also obtained between complete lactation records(per305_full) and incomplete lactation record (per_90 cut, 150cut, 200 cut) in breeding values regarding persistency. Especially, the differences between per_90 cut and per305_full were very large(from 1.8 kg to 145kg).

  • Background: Histone deacetylase (HDAC) 8 is one of its family members catalyzes the removal of acetyl groups from N-terminal lysine residues of histone proteins thereby restricts transcription factors from being expressed. Inhibition of HDAC8 has become an emerging and effective anti-cancer therapy for various cancers. Application computational methodologies may result in identifying the key components that can be used in developing future potent HDAC8 inhibitors. Results: Facilitating the discovery of novel and potential chemical scaffolds as starting points in the future HDAC8 inhibitor design, quantitative structure-activity relationship models were generated with 30 training set compounds using genetic function approximation (GFA) and Bayesian algorithms. Six GFA models were selected based on the significant statistical parameters calculated during model development. A Bayesian model using fingerprints was developed with a receiver operating characteristic curve cross-validation value of 0.902. An external test set of 54 diverse compounds was used in validating the models. Conclusions: Finally two out of six models based on their predictive ability over the test set compounds were selected as final GFA models. The Bayesian model has displayed a high classifying ability with the same test set compounds and the positively and negatively contributing molecular fingerprints were also unveiled by the model. The effectively contributing physicochemical properties and molecular fingerprints from a set of known HDAC8 inhibitors were identified and can be used in designing future HDAC8 inhibitors.
