  • Genome-wide association studies using large case-control samples and several hundred thousand genetic markers efficiently and powerfully assay common genetic variations. The application of these studies to inflammatory bowel disease has led to the identification of susceptibility genes and affirmed the importance of innate and adaptive immunity in the pathogenesis of disease. Efforts directed towards the identification of environmental factors have implicated commensal bacteria as determinants of dysregulated immunity and inflammatory bowel disease. Host genetic polymorphisms most likely interact with functional bacterial changes to stimulate aggressive immune responses that lead to chronic tissue injury.

  • To analyze the riverine microbial community structure, genetic fingerprints and ecological indexes such as species abundances, diversity, evenness, dominance of targeted rivers in Gyeonggi Province were acquired and evaluated using terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP) technique. Genetic fingerprinting technique such as T-RFLP, which is able to show the microbial community clearly unlike traditional culture-dependent techniques, was thought to be useful to analyse the riverine microbial ecosystem under various factors. Riverine ecosystem evaluation using visible organisms would give biased results with time, targeted organism and researcher. But, T-RFLP, which can exclude the subjected biases such as culture condition and identification, would be an option to understand natural ecosystem by including the microorganisms that defy culture but perform important functions.

  • In this paper, we consider the problem of regrouping a number of service sites into a smaller number of service sites called centers. Each service site is represented as a point in the plane and has an associated value of service demand. We aim to group the sites so that each group has the balanced service demand and the sum of distances from the sites in the group to their corresponding center is minimized. To solve this problem, we propose a hybrid genetic algorithm that is combined with Voronoi diagrams. We provide a variety of experimental results by changing the weights of the two factors: service demands and distances. Our hybrid algorithm finds better solutions in a shorter computation time in comparison with a pure genetic algorithm.

  • Hypertension is characterized by multiple genetic and environmental factors. To establish the genetic basis of hypertension in Koreans, we investigated the genetic variations of two candidate genes (aldosterone synthase (CYP11B2), ${\gamma}$ subunit of the amiloride-sensitive epithelial sodium channel (ENaC) in the Korean patients with hypertension and normotensive controls. There were no significant differences in the genotype and allele frequencies between two groups, respectively. However, there was the significant difference between Korean and Caucasian populations in allele frequency of RFLPs in the two candidate genes. Therefore, these studies also need to be confirmed in other ethnic groups, although our results do not support a possible role of these genes on hypertension in Korean population

  • In this paper, a method for optimal measurement placement in the problem of static harmonic state estimation in power systems is proposed. At first, for achieving to a suitable method by considering the precision factor of the estimation, a procedure based on Genetic Algorithm (GA) for optimal placement is suggested. Optimal placement by regarding the precision factor has an evident solution, and the proposed method is successful in achieving the mentioned solution. But, the previous applied method, which is called the Sequential Elimination (SE) algorithm, can not achieve to the evident solution of the mentioned problem. Finally, considering both precision and economic factors together in solving the optimal placement problem, a practical method based on GA is proposed. The simulation results are shown an improvement in the precision of the estimation by using the proposed method.

  • In this paper proposes the optimal fuzzy controller design method using the genetic algorithm. Proposed method is that fuzzy rules and input - output scaling factors of the fuzzy controller are determined by using genetic algorithm that is very effectively in the optimization problem. The optimal fuzzy rules of servo system uses the fitness function which are the performance index in fuzzy controller. In order to verify excellent control performances of the proposed control method, we compare the control performance and characteristics about the proposed control method with a conventional fuzzy control method through a lot of simulations and experiments with one link manipulator.

  • The container load planning is one of key factors for efficient operations of handling equipments at container ports. When the number of containers are large, finding a good solution using the conventional genetic algorithm is very time consuming. To obtain a good solution with considerably small effort, in this paper a pseudo-parallel genetic algorithm(PPGA) based on both the migration model and the ring topology is developed The performance of the PPGA is demonstrated through a test problem of determining the optimal loading sequence of the containers.

  • Molecular markers have increasingly been used in plant genetic analysis, due to their obvious advantages over conventional phenotypic markers, as they are highly polymorphic, more in number, stable across different developmental stages, neutral to selection and least influenced by environmental factors. Among the PCR based marker techniques, ISSR is one of the simplest and widely used techniques, which involves amplification of DNA segment present at an amplifiable distance in between two identical microsatellite repeat regions oriented in opposite direction. Though ISSR markers are dominant like RAPD, they are more stable and reproducible. Because of these properties ISSR markers have recently been found using extensively for finger printing, pohylogenetic analysis, population structure analysis, varietal/line identification, genetic mapping, marker-assisted selection, etc. In mulberry (Morus spp.), ISSR markers were used for analyzing phylogenetic relationship among cultivated varieties, between tropical and temperate mulberry, for solving the vexed problem of identifying taxonomic positions of genotypes, for identifying markers associated with leaf yield attributing characters. As ISSR markers are one of the cheapest and easiest marker systems with high efficiency in generating polymorphism among closely related varieties, they would play a major role in mulberry genome analysis in the future.

  • In this paper, we propose a method that optimizes the parameters of fuzzy logic controller : centers and widths of membership functions and scaling factors using genetic algorithm. Before fuzzy logic controller controls a plant in real time, first off it is optimized by genetic algorithm. We select error and error variation between reference trajectory and real output for the input signals of fuzzy controller. We compared and investigated conventional fuzzy control method and proposed method through simulation and experiment using one link manipulator with nonlinear characteristic.

  • In this paper the design method of a fuzzy logic controller with a genetic algorithm is proposed. Fuzzy logic controller is based on linguistic descriptions(in the form of fuzzy IF-THEN rules) from human experts. The auto-tuning method is presented to automatically improve the output performance of controller utilizing the genetic algorithm. The GA algorithm estimates automatically the optimal values of scaling factors and membership function parameters of fuzzy control rules. Controllers are applied to the processes with time-delay and the DC servo motor. Computer simulations are conducted at the step input and the output performances are evaluated in the ITAE.
