During operation of generator, the excitation force with 120Hz always exist irrespective of No. of poles. Therefore the vibration is generated in the stator end windings and the micro-crack is grown up inside the bars. After all, coolant water is leaked outside the bars or the stator is moved and is worn out. What is more, one bar is touched with another bar so a short circuit may frequently happen in operation. In order to prevent it from occurring, the evaluation of mechanical integrity for generator stator windings is carried out periodically during overhaul period. This help troublesome end windings to complement with insulation material and to change vibration characteristics. In this paper, the evaluation of mechanical integrity for generator stator windings is described and the change of vibration characteristics is analysed.
A plant's generator system under operating condition has been suffered the vibration from the excitation force with 120Hz. The vibration is generated in the stator end windings. For analyze dynamic characteristics of the generator's stator, its finite element model were obtained using ANSYS software package for modal and harmonic analysis. we compare the analysis result with experimental data. The results show that the resonance frequency, which is related with second ecliptical mode on the stator end windings 129Hz. The experimental results are good agreement with the FEA model.
Insulation breakdown of water-cooled generator stator windings occurs frequently due to leakage of cooling water and absorption into the insulation material. Leakage and absorption problems of water-cooled stator windings are often found during regular preventive maintenance. To evaluate cooling water leakage and absorption, diagnostic tests were performed on two water-cooled turbine generators, which have been in service for 13 and 17 years, respectively. The test results of the measured electrical properties such as dissipation factor($tan{\delta}$), capacitance and AC leakage current for water-cooled generator stator windings with wet bars are reported in this paper.
Axial Field Permanent Magnet (AFPM) generators are widely applied for the small wind turbine because of the higher power density per unit weight than that of the conventional radial field generator. It is caused by the disc shaped rotor and the stator structures. The generally used AFPM generator, AFER-NS generator, is composed of the two side's external rotors and non-slotted stator without stator core. However, the output voltage and the output power are limited by the large reluctance by the long air-gap flux paths. In this paper, the design study of AFIR-S generator having double side's slotted stator core is accomplished to improve the output generation characteristics. The electromagnetic design analysis and the design improvement of the suggested AFIR-S generator are studied. Firstly, the electromagnetic design analysis was done to increase the power density. Secondly, the design optimizations of the rotor pole-arc ratio of permanent magnet are accomplished to increase the output power and to reduce the cogging torque. Finally, the output performances of AFER-NS and AFIR-S generator are compared with each other. For this study, 3D FEA is applied for the design analysis because of three dimensional electromagnetic structures.
The on-line partial discharge (PD) in stator windings of air-cooled gas turbine (GT) generator (119.2MVA, 13.8kV) is measured and analyzed in this paper. This generator was designed by global vacuum pressure impregnation (VPI). The generator failed two times at top bar (16T) of phase B in the stator slot. Six epoxy-mica capacitors were installed in three phases of GT generator. On-line PD test was performed on GT generator using turbine generator analyzer (TGA). TGA showed that the normalized quantity number (NQN) and the PD magnitude($Q_m$) were high in phase B. Internal discharges were generated in phases A, B and C. The trend analysis of NQN and $Q_m$ value are obtained in order to monitor the insulation condition in GT generator stator windings. Phases A and C were in good condition. But phase B had deteriorated significantly
On-line partial discharge monitoring system for generator stator insulation is developed. This system consists of remote and host units. The remote unit detects partial discharge signals from SSC(Stator Slot Coupler) installed between wedge and stator windings. The host unit monitors the condition of winding insulation. This system will be used as a module of a generator on-line monitoring system utilizing global network.
The central monitoring system with on-line diagnosis of high-voltage generator/motor stator insulation is developed. The system is capable of remote diagnosis and monitoring partial discharges of high-voltage generator/motor stator insulation. GOMS(Generator On-line Monitoring System) with maximum of 9 input channels can measure and analyze the status of high-voltage motor stator insulation by on-line. The measured and analysis data are brought to the central monitoring system via modem to build database. The central monitoring system can diagnose and monitor the insulation status of several high-voltage generator/motor at any time. The insulation status of those machines can be enhanced by the database on partial discharges.
For stator winding protection of AC generator, KCL(Kirchhoff's Current Law) is widely applied. Actually a CRDR(Current Ratio Differential Relay) based on DFT(Discrete Fourier Transform) has been used for protecting generator. It has been pointed out that defects can occur during the process of transforming a time domain signal into a frequency domain one which can lead to loss of time domain information. Wavelets techniques are proposed for the analysis of power system transients. This paper introduces an algorithm to choose a suitable Mother Wave1et for generator stator fault detection. For optimal selection, we analyzed db(Daubechies), sym(Symlets), and coif(Coiflects) of Mother Wavelet. And we compared with performance of the choice algorithm using detail coefficients energy and RMS(root mean square) error. It can be improved the reliability of the conventional DFT based CRDR. The feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed scheme is proved with simulation using collected data obtained from ATP (Alternative Transient Program) package.
A variable electromotive-force generator (VEG), which is a modified generator with an adjustable overlap between the rotor and the stator, is proposed to expand the operational range of a regular generator through a simple and robust active control strategy. It has a broad range of applications in hybrid vehicles, wind turbines, water turbines, and similar technologies. A mathematical model of the VEG is developed, and a novel prototype is designed and fabricated. The performance of the VEG with an active control system, which adjusts the overlap ratio based on the desired output power at different rotor speeds for a specific application, is theoretically and experimentally studied. The results show that reducing the overlap between the rotor and the stator of the generator results in reduced torque loss of the generator and an increased rotational speed of the generator rotor. A VEG can improve the fuel efficiency of hybrid vehicles; it can also expand operational ranges of wind turbines and water turbines and harness more power.
This paper presents a new stand-alone wind-based induction generator system with constant frequency and adjustable output voltage. The proposed generator consists of a six-phase cage-rotor induction machine with two separate three-phase balanced stator windings and a three-phase space vector pulse width modulation inverter that operates as a static synchronous compensator (STATCOM). The first stator winding is fed by the STATCOM and used to excite the machine while the second stator winding is connected to the generator external load. The main frequency of the STATCOM is determined to be constant and equal to the load-requested frequency. The generator output frequency is independent of the load power demand and its prime mover speed because the frequency of the induced emf in the second stator winding is the same as this constant frequency. A sliding mode control (SMC) is developed to regulate the generator output voltage. A second SMC is used to force the zero active power exchanged between the machine and the STATCOM. Some simulation and experimental results are presented to prove the validity and effectiveness of the proposed generator system.
