In this paper, we explore the details of three classic data augmentation methods and two generative model based oversampling methods. The three classic data augmentation methods are random sampling (RANDOM), Synthetic Minority Over-sampling Technique (SMOTE), and Adaptive Synthetic Sampling (ADASYN). The two generative model based oversampling methods are Conditional Generative Adversarial Network (CGAN) and Wasserstein Generative Adversarial Network (WGAN). In imbalanced data, the whole instances are divided into majority class and minority class, where majority class occupies most of the instances in the training set and minority class only includes a few instances. Generative models have their own advantages when they are used to generate more plausible samples referring to the distribution of the minority class. We also adopt CGAN to compare the data augmentation performance with other methods. The experimental results show that WGAN-based oversampling technique is more stable than other approaches (RANDOM, SMOTE, ADASYN and CGAN) even with the very limited training datasets. However, when the imbalanced ratio is too small, generative model based approaches cannot achieve satisfying performance than the conventional data augmentation techniques. These results suggest us one of future research directions.

Defect detection during liquid crystal display (LCD) manufacturing has always been a critical challenge. This study aims to address this issue by proposing a data augmentation method based on generative adversarial networks (GAN) to improve defect identification accuracy in LCD production. By leveraging synthetically generated image data from GAN, we effectively augment the original dataset to make it more representative and diverse. This data augmentation strategy enhances the model's generalization capability and robustness on real-world data. Compared to traditional data augmentation techniques, the synthetic data from GAN are more realistic, diverse and broadly distributed. Experimental results demonstrate that training models with GAN-generated data combined with the original dataset significantly improves the detection accuracy of critical defects in LCD manufacturing, compared to using the original dataset alone. This study provides an effective data augmentation approach for intelligent quality control in LCD production.
Ship detection in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images is an important application in marine monitoring for the military and civilian domains. Over the past decade, object detection has achieved significant progress with the development of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and lot of labeled databases. However, due to difficulty in collecting and labeling SAR images, it is still a challenging task to solve SAR ship detection CNNs. To overcome the problem, some methods have employed conventional data augmentation techniques such as flipping, cropping, and affine transformation, but it is insufficient to achieve robust performance to handle a wide variety of types of ships. In this paper, we present a novel and effective approach for deep SAR ship detection, that exploits label-rich Electro-Optical (EO) images. The proposed method consists of two components: a data augmentation network and a ship detection network. First, we train the data augmentation network based on conditional generative adversarial network (cGAN), which aims to generate additional SAR images from EO images. Since it is trained using unpaired EO and SAR images, we impose the cycle-consistency loss to preserve the structural information while translating the characteristics of the images. After training the data augmentation network, we leverage the augmented dataset constituted with real and translated SAR images to train the ship detection network. The experimental results include qualitative evaluation of the translated SAR images and the comparison of detection performance of the networks, trained with non-augmented and augmented dataset, which demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed framework.

RF fingerprinting based on deep learning (DL) has gained interests as a means to improve the security of near field communication (NFC) by allowing identification of NFC tags based on unique physical characteristics. To achieve high accuracy in the identification of NFC tags, it is crucial to utilize a large number of training data, however it is hard to collect such dataset in practice. In this study, we have provided new methodology to generate RF waveform from NFC tags, i.e., data augmentation, based on a conditional generative adversarial network (CGAN). By using the RF waveform of NFC tags which is collected from the testbed with software defined radio (SDR), we have confirmed that the realistic RF waveform can be generated through our proposed scheme.
Diagnostic models are required. Data augmentation is one of the best ways to improve deep learning performance. Traditional augmentation techniques that modify image brightness or spatial information are difficult to achieve great results. To overcome this, a generative adversarial network (GAN) technology that generates virtual data to increase deep learning performance has emerged. GAN can create realistic-looking fake images by competitive learning two networks, a generator that creates fakes and a discriminator that determines whether images are real or fake made by the generator. GAN is being used in computer vision, IT solutions, and medical imaging fields. It is essential to secure additional learning data to advance deep learning-based fault diagnosis solutions in the power industry where facilities are strictly maintained more than other industries. In this paper, we propose a method for generating power facility images using GAN and a strategy for improving performance when only used a small amount of data. Finally, we analyze the performance of the augmented image to see if it could be utilized for the deep learning-based diagnosis system or not.

Recently, deep neural network based approaches have shown a good performance for various fields of natural language processing. A huge amount of training data is essential for building a deep neural network model. However, collecting a large size of training data is a costly and time-consuming job. A data augmentation is one of the solutions to this problem. The data augmentation of text data is more difficult than that of image data because texts consist of tokens with discrete values. Generative adversarial networks (GANs) are widely used for image generation. In this work, we generate sentimental texts by using one of the GANs, CS-GAN model that has a discriminator as well as a classifier. We evaluate the usefulness of generated sentimental texts according to various measurements. CS-GAN model not only can generate texts with more diversity but also can improve the performance of its classifier.

In this paper, we investigate the comparative performance of two leading object detection architectures, YOLOv7 and Detection Transformer (DETR), across varying levels of data augmentation using CycleGAN. Our experiments focus on chest scan images within the context of biomedical informatics, specifically targeting the detection of abnormalities. The study reveals that YOLOv7 consistently outperforms DETR across all levels of augmented data, maintaining better performance even with 75% augmented data. Additionally, YOLOv7 demonstrates significantly faster convergence, requiring approximately 30 epochs compared to DETR's 300 epochs. These findings underscore the superiority of YOLOv7 for object detection tasks, especially in scenarios with limited data and when rapid convergence is essential. Our results provide valuable insights for researchers and practitioners in the field of computer vision, highlighting the effectiveness of YOLOv7 and the importance of data augmentation in improving model performance and efficiency.

Recently, malware classification based on Deep Neural Networks (DNN) has gained significant attention due to the rise in popularity of artificial intelligence (AI). DNN-based malware classifiers are a novel solution to combat never-before-seen malware families because this approach is able to classify malwares based on structural characteristics rather than requiring particular signatures like traditional malware classifiers. However, these DNN-based classifiers have been found to lack robustness against malwares that are carefully crafted to evade detection. These specially crafted pieces of malware are referred to as adversarial examples. We consider a clever adversary who has a thorough knowledge of DNN-based malware classifiers and will exploit it to generate a crafty malware to fool DNN-based classifiers. In this paper, we propose a DNN-based malware classifier that becomes resilient to these kinds of attacks by exploiting Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) based data augmentation. The experimental results show that the proposed scheme classifies malware, including AEs, with a false positive rate (FPR) of 3.0% and a balanced accuracy of 70.16%. These are respective 26.1% and 18.5% enhancements when compared to a traditional DNN-based classifier that does not exploit GAN.

In this paper, we present a data augmentation method that generates synthetic plant disease images using Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs). We propose a training scheme that first uses classical data augmentation techniques to enlarge the training set and then further enlarges the data size and its diversity by applying GAN techniques for synthetic data augmentation. Our method is demonstrated on a limited dataset of 2789 images of tomato plant diseases (Gray mold, Canker, Leaf mold, Plague, Leaf miner, Whitefly etc.).

In recent research, deep learning-based methods have achieved state-of-the-art performance in various computer vision tasks. However, these methods are commonly supervised, and require huge amounts of annotated data to train. Acquisition of data demands an additional costly effort, particularly for the tasks where it becomes challenging to obtain large amounts of data considering the time constraints and the requirement of professional human diligence. In this paper, we present a data level synthetic sampling solution to learn from small and imbalanced data sets using Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs). The reason for using GANs are the challenges posed in various fields to manage with the small datasets and fluctuating amounts of samples per class. As a result, we present an approach that can improve learning with respect to data distributions, reducing the partiality introduced by class imbalance and hence shifting the classification decision boundary towards more accurate results. Our novel method is demonstrated on a small dataset of 2789 tomato plant disease images, highly corrupted with class imbalance in 9 disease categories. Moreover, we evaluate our results in terms of different metrics and compare the quality of these results for distinct classes.
