As many people keep small dogs as pets, dog bites are common injuries, accounting for approximately 80%-90% of all animal bite injuries. These injuries usually occur on the upper extremities, most commonly on the fingers. Most of these injuries appear as simple lacerations or abrasions of the skin. Common symptoms include inflammatory reactions of the soft tissue, such as pain, swelling, erythema, and cellulitis. However, the complications of small dog bites may include joint or cartilage injuries, including acute osteomyelitis. Once osteomyelitis develops, it is difficult to diagnose since it has a latency period of approximately 2 weeks. Plain radiography, magnetic resonance imaging, and 3-phase bone scans should be performed when acute osteomyelitis is suspected, and broad-spectrum empiric antibiotic treatment should be administered for approximately 8-12 weeks. We report 3 very rare cases of acute osteomyelitis that occurred after a dog bite injury.
We experienced 1 case of the giant cell tumor of the tendon sheath penetrating the middle phalanx of the third toe. Patient had painless huge mass all around the third phalanx of the foot which made a penetrating hole through the middle phalanx of the third toe in plain radiography. The period from the onset of the symptom until operation was about several years. The mass extended to the base of the distal phalanx and compressed digital nerves and vessels. Patient presented with a chief complaint of the pain on the plantar aspect of the toe and limitation of the motion of the distal interphalangeal joint. Giant cell tumor of the tendon sheath was cured by total en block resection.
The field size of the lumbar spine X-ray examination, which belongs to the most frequent examination in general radiography, is 5 times wider than the width of the lumbar spine. Exposure index (EI) as per International Electrotechnical Commission has a proportional relationship with the dose incident on the image receptor for clinical protocols in addition to RQA5, which is a calibration beam quality. In this study, the effectiveness of the set field size was evaluated through the change of EI according to the size of field during lumbar spine X-ray examinations. Lumbar anterior-posterior and lateral examinations was performed using a whole-body phantom, and the national average exposure conditions of Korea investigated in 2017 were introduced for the X-ray exposure. As a result of comparing the EI displayed on the console of digital radiography system for the three field size in ① 18 × 36 cm2 ② 25 × 36 cm2 ③ 36 × 36 cm2, the EI values showed a tendency to increase as the field size increased. Since the patient dose, such as organ dose around the lumbar spine, increases as the field size becomes larger, thus, if the EI obtained from the field size at a level that does not interfere with diagnosis is set as a reference, the effectiveness of the field size can be evaluated through the EI displayed on the console when the lumbar spine X-ray examination is conducted.
In order to obtain effective utilization of intensifying screens[$CaWO_4(W),\;Gd_2O_2S:Tb(Gd)$, BaFCl : Eu(Ba)] over the diagnostic radiology range, we calculated absorption coefficient (${\mu}$), absorption efficiency (${\eta}_{\alpha}$) and absorbed energy ratio(R) and analyzed effects of these properties on X-ray image, finally concluded as below. Regardless of presence of contrast media, absorption coefficient of Gd the highest and decreased with increase of thickness and kVp. Absorption efficiency related with absorbance of fluorescent materials showed the highest value for the Gd, and discontinuous points exhibited at around $80{\sim}90\;kVp$ and $90{\sim}100kVp$ for the Ba and the Gd, respectively. Furthermore, the absorbed energy ratio(R) correspond to contrast of reflection showed the largest value for the W in the absence of contrast media, and for the Gd in the case of the existence of it, and the ratio was decreased with increasing of incident energy. Owing to these properties, we assumed that it was more preferable to use rare earth type intensifying screen for the radiography using in the C.M.(I, Ba), while in the general radiography, $CaWO_4$ intensifying screen was applicable.

A 2-year-old, 440 kg, thoroughbred gelding showed a lameness grade of 3 out of 5, as well as swelling and heating on the proximal interphalangeal joint (PIPJ). Periarticular new bones due to the arthritis were observed on performing radiography and ultrasonography. PIPJ arthrodesis was performed under general anesthesia. With the PIPJ open, the articular cartilage was removed by using curette, chisel, and mallet. Arthrodesis was performed with a PIP plate and two additional transarticular cortex screws inserted in lag fashion. A cast was placed over the limb distal from the proximal metatarsal bone. At 6 months after surgery, complete union of the PIPJ was confirmed by radiography, and the incision site was well closed. Based on the outcome, a PIP plate with two additional transarticular cortex screws inserted in lag fashion is recommended as a method for treating osteoarthritis of the PIPJ in horses.
The purpose of this study was to analyze questionnaires of 161 college students attending radiology departments in order to investigate the actual condition of internet use of radiology students. As a result, 95% of college students using the Internet showed 5.8% of general knowledge, 56.9% of radiation major, and 45.8% of general education. In the field of Internet use, basic medicine was 71.2%, anatomy 59.5% and physiology 51.6%. Radiation theory was 39.9% in radiation physics, 31.4% in radiation biology, and 18.3% in radiation management. The radiological applications were followed by radiography and radiography in order of 31.4% and 20.3%, respectively. The radiological imaging was 45.8%, MRI was 37.9%, CT was 37.3%, ultrasound was 24.2%, And radiation nuclear medicine 25.5%. The results of the descriptive statistics of the satisfaction of the contents using the Internet media showed that the overall satisfaction was below 2.5 Based on the results of this study, it is necessary to develop a program with high accessibility to provide various opportunities for internet-based opportunities to increase the academic achievement value of major subjects through the internet and to solve the difficulties in the major subject.
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to evaluate radiation safety education, knowledge and practice of dental hygienists in using handheld portable intraoral X-ray equipment and to suggest the need for radiation safety education in using handheld portable intraoral X-ray equipment. Methods: We surveyed 223 dental hygienists from July, 2017 to August in the dental clinics of Daejeon, Seoul and Gyeonggi area. Results: Radiation safety educational experience was higher in a year's career (72.9%), than 3 years experience (32.5%) (p<0.05). 82.7% of dental clinic workers took university education for radiation safety education while 55.6% of dental hospital workers took company training (p<0.05). More than 70% of the subjects did not have experience of radiation safety education about using portable intraoral X-ray. Radiation safety knowledge was highest in a year's career (p<0.05). The cumulative dose, radiation sensitivity, and lead defense knowledge were high in all subjects, but knowledge related to scattering radiation and scattering radiation sources was low. Practice of portable intraoral X-ray safety was significantly lower than knowledge. Conclusions: Knowledge of portable intraoral radiography safety is available, but performance is poor. Even with the small amount of radiation exposure, the risk is perceivable. There is a need to actively utilize the provided radiation protection products. In order to do this, efforts should be made to improve knowledge and performance of radiation safety through not only college education but also postemployment training.
For the efficient management of the diagnostic x-ray equipment, a nation-wide inspection of hospitals was performed by an inspection institute in Taejon in the first half of 1997. Among those hospitals inspected, 28 equipments(machines) which were over 500 mA were randomly selected according to their characteristics : 7 condenser type x-ray equipments, 7 three control phase of full wave rectification of type remote control x-ray equipments, 7 single phase of full wave rectification type for general radiography equipments, and 7 single phase of full wave rectification type of R/F equipments. We obtained the following results by conducting the experiment based on the efficiency of the equipments mentioned above. 1) When the equipments are analyzed, 2 out of 7 single phase of full wave rectification type of general radiography equipments(28.6%), 3 out of 7 single phase of full wave rectification type of R/F equipments(42.9%), 5 out of 7 three phase of full wave rectification type remote of control x-ray equipments(71.4%), and 4 out of 7 condenser type of x-ray equipments(57.1%) showed suitability. It proves the superiority of the three phase of full wave rectification type of remote control x-ray equipments. 2) From the overall analysis, only about 50% of the equipments(suitability of 14 out of 28) maintain the efficient management. Therefore, maintenance management of equipments is more necessary. If the efficiency of the x-ray equipment is uniformly maintained and managed to prevent the breakdown(trouble) beforehand especially through the continuous inspection of tube voltage, tube current, exposure time, and collimator, the financial loss and exposure dose to the patient, as well as the workers engaged in radiation, can be reduced for better medical service.

Osteopetrosis refers to a group of genetic skeletal disorders characterized by osteosclerosis and fragile bones. Osteopetrosis can be classified into autosomal dominant, autosomal recessive, or X-linked forms, which might differ in clinical characteristics and disease severity. Autosomal recessive osteopetrosis, also known as malignant osteopetrosis, has an earlier onset, more serious clinical symptoms, and is usually fatal. We encountered a 1-day-old girl who was born full-term via vaginal delivery, which was complicated by meconium-stained amniotic fluid, cephalo-pelvic disproportion, and nuchal cord. Routine neonatal care was provided, in addition to blood tests and chest radiography to screen for sepsis, as well as skull radiography to rule out head injuries. Initial blood tests revealed hypocalcemia, which persisted on follow-up tests the next day. Radiographic examinations revealed diffusely increased bone density and a "space alien" appearance of the skull. Based on radiographic and laboratory findings, the infantile form of osteopetrosis was suspected and genetic testing for identification of the responsible gene. Eventually, a heterozygous mutation of the T cell immune regulator 1, ATPase H+ transporting V0 subunit a3 (TCIRG1) gene (c.292C>T) was identified, making this the first reported case of neonatal-onset malignant osteopetrosis with TCIRG1 mutation in South Korea. Early-onset hypocalcemia is common and usually results from prematurity, fetal growth restriction, maternal diabetes, perinatal asphyxia, and physiologic hypoparathyroidism. However, if hypocalcemia persists, we recommend considering 'infantile of osteopetrosis' as a rare cause of neonatal hypocalcemia and performing radiographic examinations to establish the diagnosis.
Before entering 21st Century, modern medical science is requiring more precise display which is highly estimated in diagnostic value as radial science technology is achieving sharp development. And it is also trying to contribute to improve national health and to offer better service by reducing radial exposure. General projection and Fluoroscopy which are most difficult to be displayed in digital tend to change their way ; from analog to digital with development of Electronic Engineering and Computer Technology, Introducing to CR system in 1994, SMC have displayed General projection and Fluoroscopy 100% in digital using CR system. This study searched differences between repeat rate, repeat type in the exam using Film/Screen and those in the exam using CR system. According to the analysis of repeat types and repeat rate of Film which was reused by using CR system in general projection room and Fluoroscopy room of SMC, we found that total 192,813 films were used and 2,097 films, 1.09% of total were reused. However, actual repeat covers 0.76% to 1,461 sheets with the exception of 636sheets. As above, display process using CR system is 0.76% much lower than general repeat rate 2$\sim$4% of Film/Screen exam. Besides decreased under/over exposure, it is appeared that position failure rate in repeat rate 0.76% covers relatively high 31%. Noticing that repeat caused unskilled devices handing was found many times, sufficient understanding seems to be required to reduce repeat.
