  • Due to increase of demands on safety and convenience for automotive vehicle, the use of DC motor, such as power window, seat adjusting, pedal adjusting, sunroof, electric shift motor and so on, is increasing rapidly in the whole world. Worm gear is an important part to transmit torque to another gear in gear mechanism of automotive DC motor. But with current forming process, it has some problems in manufacturing and the quality. Also, the characteristics of automotive parts such as price and mass-production limit the quality improvement. Recently several methods are used in order to reduce a worm screw machining time and to maintain precision. In this paper, we introduce whirling tool machining and side milling cutter machining as effective manufacturing method of worm screw and study on the cutting force of side milling cutter and whirling tool in worm screw machining.

Design of fuzzy compensator for compensate the backlash effect (백래쉬 현상의 보상을 위한 퍼지 보상기 설계)

  • In rotating systems, backlash imposed limitations on the quality of control. System with gear is an example where this is a well-known limitation. In order to increase the controller performance, we design a fuzzy system to compensate the backlash effect. We prove that under certain conditions the fuzzy compensator guarantees that the backlash output converges to the desired trajectory. Simulation results show that the fuzzy compensator is robust to the backlash parameter.

  • In the automatic transmission using planetary gear there exists nonlinearities due to the finite difference between gear ratios, which yield torque hole during shift and influence on the ride quality and life of clutch. Based on the reaction carrier and converter turbine speed sliding functions are defined. Nonlinear closed-loop control laws are derived using them. Computer simulation shows that the closed loop design is better than the open loop design and semi-closed loop design.

  • Bevel gears are important mechanical parts to transmit power in transportation system high precision parts like bevel gears might be manufactured by closed die forging process for dimensional accuracy. Closed die forging of bevel gears offers the high quality and good mechanical properties and also leads to considerable cost saving. To determinate the proper closed-die forging process for bevel gear forms, three-dimensional finite element simulation for the progressive forging process was earned out and also the simulation results were compared with experimental results.

  • In the study, the modeling strategies in connection with the quantitative prediction and improvement of product accuracy and quality are proposed. The analysis models are composed of process chain, geometry of die, interface conditions between die and workpiece, material parameters, forming velocity of machine, and so on. A 3D simulation platform, around the software MSC. Superforge, is built up for the applications in net-shape forming parts. Some results for bevel gear are shown to demonstrate the efficiency of the modeling system.

  • This paper describes a reliability/durability test of the remanufactured steering gear units. There used to be government restrictions to remanufacture certain types of automotive components regarding safety of passengers. Nevertheless, scientific approach to sustainability and remanufacturing process provided solid evidence of highly beneficial sides of reusing the products. Failure mode analysis of the steering gear unit is performed and main failure is found out. The unit is remanufactured by fixing the failure and its quality is assessed through designing a new sequence of loading events. Oil leakage is witnessed as a possible failure and its volume is measured. Conclusions based on laboratory condition durability test are given at the end.

  • An electric drill is a handy tool used in a machine shop, which consists of motor, gear, bearing, shaft, and case, i.e., a gear driving system. Low level vibration and noise of the electric drill can bring the assurance of the quality and reliability of the machine. The vibration sources of the electric drill should be investigated for the reduction of the vibration and noise of the system. Through the experiments in laboratory and the various signal processing procedure for the measured vibration and sound signals, the characteristics of the vibration of the electric drill are investigated. And its propagation path is sought using partial coherence function.

  • In the die casting process, the flow of liquid metal has significant influence on the quality of casting products and die life. For the optimal process design of automobile gear housing, various analyses were performed in this study by using computer simulation code, MAGMAsoft. The simulation has been focused on the molten metal behaviors during the mold filling and solidification stages for the sound casting products. Also the internal defects were predicted by application of air pressure and feeding criteria.
