  • In recent years, plastic waste has been recognized as a worldwide environmental issue. To solve the disposal problem of the plastic waste, alternative treatment such as the use of biodegradable plastic(polybutylene succinate: PBS) is indeed highly in demand due to its merit of PBS buried in soil decomposed into carbon dioxide and water. In the present study, for the production of further functional PBS with TiO$_2$ as photocatalyst, which shows the decomposition of detrimental organic compound and pollutant under ultraviolet irradiation, we attempted to prepare photocatalytic TiO$_2$ coatings on PBS substrate by HVOF and plasma spraying techniques under various conditions using three kinds of agglomerated powders (P200: 200nm, P30: 30nm, P7: 7nm). The microstructures of coatings were characterized with SEM and XRD analysis, and the photocatalytic efficiency of coatings was evaluated through the photo degradation of gaseous acetaldehyde. Therefore, such functional TiO$_2$-Plastic composite material is expected to considerably contribute to the reduction of aggravated environmental problem.

  • We measured flame extinguishing concentration and flue gas composition in the n-heptane fuel cup-burner system using inert gas agents such as nitrogen, argon, carbon dioxide and their mixtures. The flame extinguishing concentration of binary gaseous mixture was well predicted by model which contains the flame extinguishing concentration and composition of pure components. The higher average specific gravity of the mixed inert gas agents, the more excellent flame extinguishing performance. And the structure of enclosed space also affects the fire extinguishing. The composition of carbon dioxide in the flue gas was decreased with increasing extinguishing agent used. Nitrogen monoxide production is not related with increasing nitrogen, but increased at rapid mass flow rate of air in the cup-burner.

  • Dynamical friction plays an important role in reducing angular momenta of objects in orbital motions. While astronomical objects usually follow curvilinear orbits, most previous studies focused on the linear-trajectory cases. Here, we present the gravitational wake due to, and dynamical friction on, a perturber moving on a circular orbit in a uniform gaseous medium using a semi-analytic method. The circular orbit causes the density wakes to bend along the orbit into asymmetric configurations, resulting in the drag forces in both opposite (azimuthal) and lateral (radial) directions to the perturber motion, although the latter does not contribute to the orbital decay much. For a subsonic perturber, the bending of a wake is only modest and the resulting drag force in the opposite direction is remarkably similar to the linear-trajectory counterpart. On the other hand, a supersonic perturber is able to overtake its own wake, possibly multiple times, creating a high-density trailing tail. Despite the dramatic changes in the wake morphologies, the azimuthal drag force is in surprisingly good agreement with the formulae of Ostriker for the linear-trajectory cases, provided $V_pt=2R_p,\;where\;V_p\;and\;R_p$ are the velocity and orbital radius of the perturber, respectively.

  • Gas materials in the inner Galactic disk continuously migrate toward the Galactic center (GC) due to interactions with the bar potential, magnetic fields, stars, and other gaseous materials. In case of the Milky Way, those in forms of molecules appear to accumulate around 200 pc from the center (the central molecular zone, CMZ) to form stars there and further inside. The bar potential in the GC is thought to be responsible for such acculmulation of molecules and subsequent star formation, which is believed to have been continous throughout the lifetime of the Galaxy. We present 3-D hydrodynamic simulations of the CMZ that consider self-gravity, radiative cooling, and supernova feedback, and discuss the efficiency and role of the star formation in that region. We find that the gas accumulated in the CMZ by a bar potential of the inner bulge effectively turns into stars, supporting the idea that the stellar cusp inside the central 200 pc is a result of the sustained star formation in the CMZ. The obtained star formation rate in the CMZ, 0.03-0.1 Msun, is consistent with the recent estimate based on the mid-infrared observations by Yusef-Zadeh et al. We discuss the secular evolution of nuclear bulges in general, based on our results.

  • This paper presents a physically based technique for simulating complex multiphase fluids. This work is motivated by the "stable fluids" method developed by Stam to handle gaseous fluids. We extend this technique to water, which calls for the development of methods for modeling multiphase fluids and suppressing dissipation. We construct a multiphase fluid formulation by combining the Navier-Stokes equations with the level set method. By adopting constrained interpolation profile (CIP)-based advection, we reduce the numerical dissipation and diffusion significantly. We further reduce the dissipation by converting potential1y dissipative cel1s into droplets or bubbles that undergo Lagrangian motion. Due to the multiphase formulation, the proposed method properly simulates the interaction of water with surrounding air, instead of simulating water in a void space. Moreover, the introduction of the non-dissipative technique means that, in contrast to previous methods, the simulated water does not unnecessarily lose mass and its motion is not damped to an unphysical extent. Experiments showed that the proposed method is stable and runs fast. It is demonstrated that two-dimensional simulation runs in real-time.

  • High school students' achievements in algorithmic problems, and figure-formatted and textual-formatted conceptual problems concerning stoichiometry, gaseous state, and solution, were measured by the Chemistry Problem Solving Ability Test. The relationships among the achievement scores in the three types of problems and cognitive variables such as logical thinking ability, mental capacity, and field dependence/field independence were examined. The portion of variance of explanation for each achievement score was also studied by a multiple regression analysis. The results showed that logical thinking ability was significantly correlated with the achievement score in the algorithmic problems, and accounted for the significant portion of the variance of the score. Mental capacity accounted for the significant portion of the variance of the score in the figure-formatted conceptual problems. Although field dependence/field independence was significantly correlated with all the achievement scores, it did not significantly account for any scores in multiple regression analyses. However, the magnitudes of correlation coefficients among the achievement scores were higher than those between the achievement scores and cognitive variables. The best predictor for each score was also found to be one of the other achievement scores. Educational implications are discussed.

  • The effects of a green buffer zone to protect a residential area from air pollution from industrial facilities and traffic was examined by analyzing the case of a green buffer zone in the Shiwha industrial complex. The green buffer zone is 175 m wide. The intent was to assess the dispersion patterns of atmospheric air pollutants and the reduction in concentration around the green buffer zone. To measure atmospheric sulfur dioxide$(SO_2)$ and nitrogen dioxide$(NO_2)$ concentration, badge-type passive samplers were used and set up at 76 locations in order to measure the concentration of air pollutants with respect to the spatial dispersion. The weighted mean values of $SO_2\;and\;NO_2$ concentration were $3\~57 ppb\;and\;18\~62 ppb$ and the differences among the green buffer zone, the industrial area and the residential areas were $0.7\~1.1 ppb$. Mean values of atmospheric concentrations of $NO_2$ were similar in industrial and, residential areas and the green buffer zone. Results of the study show that the effect of the green buffer zone on reducing the dispersion of air pollutants was very low. This study also recommends that micro-climate, i.e., wind direction should be considered as a factor for planning and design of green buffer zones.

  • Livestock production in Vietnam is, as in most Asian countries, increasing rapidly and changing into specialized highly intensified operations. The volume of animal excreta generated exceeds the capacity of the operation land base and cannot be utilized efficiently. As a consequence, there is a loss of plant nutrients from livestock farms that causes environmental pollution. This study carried out a feed and excretion experiment measuring fecal characteristic, daily fecal production, daily nitrogen and phosphorous excretion from grower-finisher pigs fed prevalent rations in Vietnam. Furthermore, equations for assessing the excretion were tested, which can be used in farm models for optimal recycling of manure while focusing on reducing pollution. The results indicated that fecal production and nutrient excretion were affected by the different rations tested. This study showed that five selected equations for predicting excretion from grower-finisher pigs in Danish conditions can also be used with precision in Vietnamese pig farming systems. The equations have been proven valid and can, therefore, be used as a much needed tool for assessing fecal production and nitrogen in excreta on pig farms. The study also showed that about 12% of nitrogen excreted was emitted during housing. Waste water contains more than half of the nitrogen excreted, mainly in ammonium form which has a high potential for gaseous emission.

  • Pressurization system in a liquid-propellant launcher supplies the controlled gas into the ullage volume of propellant tanks to feed propellants to combustion chamber by pressurizing propellants stored in propellant tanks. The ullage part of propellant tank should be constantly pressurized to supply the propellants stored in propellant tanks to turbo-pump or combustion chamber by pressurant pressurization system. Pressurant used to pressurize propellants is generally stored in a series of tanks at cryogenic temperature and high preassure inside an oxidizer tank. The reason is to store the quantity of pressurant as much as possible and to make pressurant tanks as small as (i.e. as light as) possible. However for test convenience pressurant tank is located at STP (standard temperature and pressure) environment in this study. Orifices are widely adapted to several pressurization systems in liquid rocket propulsion systems. Discharge coefficients of orifices are essentially needed for the optimized design of pressurization system in liquid rocket propulsion system. For this study gaseous nitrogen was served as pressurant and rounded entry orifices were employed. The forty-two (42) rounded entry orifices (the radii of curvatures are 0.5 and 1.0) have been tested experimentally in the supersonic flow region. The discharge coefficients of rounded entry orifices with inside diameters ranging from about 1.4 to 5.0mm was measured with 0.95 ${\sim}$ 0.99.

  • An annular denuder filter pack sampling system (ADS) was used to collect acidic air pollutants in Pusan. During the study period (from June 1995 to November 1995), forty eight samples were collected every 12 hours starting from 6:00 in the morning. These samples were devided into two sets of data for day (6:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m.) and night (6:00 p.m.-6:00 a.m.). The chemical species were analyzed for HN $O_3$, HN $O_2$, S $O_2$ and N $H_3$ in the gas Phase, and N $O_3$$^{[-10]}$ , S $O_4$$^{2-}$ and N $H_4$$^{+}$ in the particulate phase. The mean concentrations measured from this study were 0.24, 1.91, 30.07 and 4.24 $\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥ for HN $O_3$, HN $O_2$, S $O_2$ and N $H_3$, respectively. The mean concentrations of N $O_3$$^{[-10]}$ , S $O_4$$^{2-}$ and N $H_4$$^+{\ulcorner}$ were 1.95, 7.36 and 3.48 $\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥, respectively. The mean concentrations of gaseous species except for HN $O_2$ were higher in daytime than in nighttime, but the reverse was true in the particulates except for N $H_4$$^{+}$. +/..
