This study describes the manufacturing method of antioxidant filter and evaluate the reduction of free radical and biological activity from mainstream smoke. When we used spray-brush for the application of antioxidant solution to the filter, cv(coefficient of variation) levels of antioxidant added to filter ranged within 3 %, which means stable and constant feeding process. 0.3~0.5mg per cigarette of antioxidant were sprayed to acetate and active carbon part in the filter plug, respectively. It was considered that the use of antioxidant added filter resulted in the reduction of the gaseous compounds of free radicals from 17 % to 19 % in the mainstream smoke. Variation for removal efficiency of free radical in antioxidant filter added to acetate part was more pronounced than that of filter added to active carbon part. Smoking deliveries of tar, nicotine for the antioxidant added filters were similar when comparing to the non-antioxidant added filter, but the delivering amounts of isoprene were significantly reduced. The estimation of consumed GSH(glutathion) showed that the gaseous toxicity of the antioxidant added filter was 14 % ~ 23 % lower than that of non-antioxidant added filter. No significant differences were observed for the total taste quality in sensory evaluation.
The adsorption characteristics of gaseous molecules on the carbonaceous adsorbent have been investigated at various temperature and pressure with different pore sizes using Grand Canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulation method. The geometrical parameters and spectroscopic properties of adsorbates have been computed using density functional theory (DFT). At higher temperatures is the adsorption amount of adsorbates is decreased due to their vaporization. Considering the pore size effect, the adsorption characteristic depends on the adsorbate size, polarity and interaction between adsorbates, etc. At all cases employed in this study, the adsorption amount of adsorbates on the carbonaceous adsorbent is increased in the order $NH_3$ < $H_2S$ < $CH_3SH$, and this result is qualitatively in good agreement with the experimental observation.

Catalytic combustion is generally accepted as one of the environmentally preferred alternatives for heat and power from fossil fuels, as it has the advantage of stable combustion under very lean conditions with such low emissions as UHC, CO, and NOx. In this work, therefore, comparative numerical studies on the catalytic combustion behaviors over Pd-based catalysts have been conducted with the gaseous $CH_4$, $C_2H_6$, and $C_3H_8$. In the following, after introducing the governing equations with 1D channel and Langmuir-Hinshelwood models, numerical investigations on the catalyst performance are conducted by changing such various parameters as inlet temperature, excess air ratio, and space velocity. The numerical results show that outlet temperature and conversion of $C_3H_8$ are highest among others because of its chemical structure and reactivity.

The aim of the present study was to estimate the prediction performance of a FDS (Fire Dynamic Simulator) to simulate the fire behaviors and suppression characteristics by operating a water-mist. Rosin-Rammler/log-normal distribution function was used to determine the initial droplet distribution of water-mist and the effects of its model constant were considered. In addition, the simulation models were validated by a comparison of the predicted fire suppression characteristics with water-mist injection pressures to the previous experiments, and the thermal flow behaviors and gaseous concentration variations were analyzed. The results showed that water-mists with the same mean diameter were affected by the characteristics of the droplet size distribution, which have different size and velocity distributions at the downstream location. The fire simulations conducted in this study determine the initial droplet size distribution tuned to the base of the spray characteristics measured by previous experiments. The simulation results showed good agreement with the previous measurements for temperature variations and fire suppression characteristics. In addition, it was confirmed that the FDS simulation with a water-mist operation supplies useful details on estimations of the thermal flow fields and gaseous concentration under water mist operation conditions.

Ambient particle size distributions of PCBs and their dry deposition fluxes were measured at a site in Seoul to quantify dry deposition fluxes of PCBs and size characteristics of PCBs in the air, and to estimate ambient concentrations of gaseous PCBs and dry deposition fluxes. The dry deposition plate was used to measure dry deposition fluxes of particulate mass and PCBs and a cascade impactor and rotary impactor were used to measure ambient particle size distributions for small ($D_p<9{\mu}m$) and large ($D_p>9{\mu}m$) particles, respectively. Six sample sets were collected from April to July 1999. The fluxes of particulate total PCBs (the sum of 43 congeners) ranged from 160 to $607ng\;m^{-2}day^{-1}$. The size distribution of total PCBs was bimodal with two peaks in small particle size ($D_p{\sim}0.6\;and\;6{\mu}m$, respectively) and, thus, mass concentration being dominant in small particles. The mean particulate PCBs concentration was $6.9{\mu}g$ PCBs/g. The concentrations of PCB homologues in the gas phase were estimated based on the particle/gas partition coefficient ($K_p$) with the measured values of particulate PCBs in this study and they were comparable to those observed in other previous studies. Dry deposition fluxes were estimated by calculating dry deposition velocities.

An experimental study was carried out to investigate the emission characteristics for various alternative fuels in a 2.0 liter 4-cylinder turbo-charged diesel engine. The conventional diesel fuel, neat GTL (Gas to Liquid), blends of diesel and biodiesel(BD20), and blends of GTL and biodiesel(G+BD20 and G+BD40) were applied, and their emission characteristics were compared at various steady-state engine operating conditions. A noticeable reduction of exhaust emissions compared to conventional diesel fuel, except for NOx emission, was observed for G+BD40, where there is a maximum 30% averaged reduction for gaseous emissions (THC and CO) and 70% for PM mass concentrations. When comparing PM size distributions for biodiesel blended fuels, the PM number concentration in accumulation mode, where the diameter of PM is greater than 50 nm, decreased due to additional oxygen content in the biodiesel fuel; in nucleation mode, where the diameter of PM is less than 50nm, there was a slight increase or decrease in the PM number concentration depending on the amount of oxygen available in the combustion chamber.
For the ${\gamma}$-ray spectrometry analysis of radium and radon in environmental samples, plastic Marinelli beakers have been usually used. But, there are two problems; one is the increment of background by adsorption of airborne radon daughters on the plastic beaker, and other is the incompleteness of radioactive equilibrium by the loss of gaseous radon produced during the radioactive equilibrium process. In order to solve these problems, we made aluminium counting container, and investigated its characteristics. We investigated radioactive equilibrium process using the aluminium container. We found that both solid and liquid samples reached at radioactive equilibrium state in the aluminium container without loss of gaseous radon. By the use of the aluminium container, we established radon and radium analysis method of solid and liquid samples using gamma-ray spectrometry.
Recently, semiconductor industry has grown rapidly because of the large demand for electronic devices and equipment. The semiconductor industries have also played an important role on the economic growth in Korea. As the environmental regulations become strict, the proper environmental management and the well-developed waste minimization technologies in semiconductor industries are two of urgent problems to be solved. The semiconductor manufacturing process consists of a series of continuous chemical processes, such as cleaning, oxidation, diffusion, photolithography, etching and film deposition. During the processes, various environmentally hazardous wastes are produced. The wastes may be classified as wastewater, gaseous pollutants, and solid wastes. For waste minimization, the substitution of raw materials and process optimization techniques are used, while the selective destruction technologies of toxic chemicals contained in the wastes have been reported. Also, new technologies have been developed for source reduction and waste reduction, such as reduction of toxic chemical use and substitution of hazardous liquids with gaseous reactants or solvent.

An experimental investigation of the gas-phase photooxidation of toluene-NO$_{x}$-air mixtures at sub-ppm concentrations has been carried out in a 6.9 m3, indoor smog chamber irradiated by blacklights. Measured parameters in the toluene-NO$_{x}$ experiments included $O_3$, NO, NO$_2$, NO$_{x}$, CO, SO$_2$ toluene, and air temperature. The initial toluene concentration ranged from 225 ppb to 991 ppb and the initial concentration ratio of toluene/NO$_{x}$ in ppbC/ppb was in the range of 5~20. It was found that the variation of gaseous species with irradiation time caused by the photooxidation of toluene-NO$_{x}$-air mixtures depended on the initial toluene concentration for similar concentration ratio of toluene/NO$_{x}$. The dependency of initial toluene concentration on the photooxidation of toluene-NO$_{x}$-air mixtures for toluene/NO$_{x}$=5~6 seemed to be opposite to that for toluene/NO$_{x}$=10~11. The arriving time at maximum ozone concentration depended on both initial toluene concentration and initial concentration ratio of toluene/NO$_{x}$. However, the maximum concentration of ozone formed by photooxidation depended only on the initial toluene concentration.luene concentration.

Hydrogen can extend the lean misfire limit to a large extent when it is mixed with conventional fuels for a spark ignition engine. In this study, hydrogen-enriched gaseous fuels by reforming process were simulated according to their proportions of $H_2$, CO, $CO_2$ and $N_2$ gases. Pure hydrogen and two different hydrogen-enriched gaseous mixtures(A-, B-composition) were tested for their basic effects on the engine performances and emissions in a single cylinder research engine. A- and B-composition showed different results from 100% $H_2$ addition because air/fuel mixtures were more diluted by their additions. Even though the energy fraction of reformed gases was increased, combustion stabilities and lean misfire limits were not sensitively improved. It means that combustion augmentation by $H_2$ addition was offset by the charge dilution of $N_2$ and $CO_2$. In addition, the low flammability of CO gas deteriorated thermal efficiencies. CO emission was drastically increased with B-composition which included higher CO component. However, $NO_x$ was reduced as energy fraction($X_e$) rised except for the case of 100% $H_2$ addition at $\lambda=1.2$ and was, for A-composition, lowered to a factor of ten when compared with that of $H_2$ addition. HC emissions were largely influenced by $COV_{imep}$ due to misfire and partial burns.
