  • Silicon carbide(SiC) layer is particularly important tri-isotropic (TRISO) coating layers because it acts as a miniature pressure vessel and a diffusion barrier to gaseous and metallic fission products in the TRISO coated particle. The high temperature deposition of SiC layer normally performed at $1500-1650^{\circ}C$ has a negative effect on the property of IPyC layer by increasing its anisotropy. To investigate the feasibility of lower temperature SiC deposition, the influence of deposition temperature on the property of SiC layer are examined in this study. While the SiC layer coated at $1500^{\circ}C$ obtains nearly stoichiometric composition, the composition of the SiC layer coated at $1300-1400^{\circ}C$ shows discrepancy from stoichiometric ratio(1:1). $3-7{\mu}m$ grain size of SiC layer coated at $1500^{\circ}C$ is decreased to sub-micrometer (< $1{\mu}m$) $-2{\mu}m$ grain size when coated at $1400^{\circ}C$, and further decreased to nano grain size when coated at $1300-1350^{\circ}C$. Moreover, the high density of SiC layer (${\geq}3.19g/cm^3$) which is easily obtained at $1500^{\circ}C$ coating is difficult to achieve at lower temperature owing to nano size pores. the density is remarkably decreased with decreasing SiC deposition temperature.

  • Fecralloy coating layer with large surface area is suitable for use as a filter media for efficient removal of hot gaseous pollutants exhausted from combustion processes. For uniform preparation of a Fecralloy coating layer with large surface area and strong adhesion to substrate, electrospray coating and thermal treatment processes are experimentally optimized in this study. A nano-colloidal solution with 0.05 wt% Fecralloy nanoparticles is successfully prepared. Optimized electrospraying conditions are experimentally discovered to prepare a uniform coating layer of Fecralloy nano-colloidal solution on a substrate. Drying the electrospray coated Fecralloy nano-colloidal solution layer at $120^{\circ}C$ and subsequent heating at $600^{\circ}C$ are the best post-treatment for enhancing the adhesion force and surface roughness of the Fecralloy coating layer on a substrate. An electrospray coating system, consisting of several multi-groove nozzles, is also experimentally confirmed as a reasonable device for uniform coating of Fecralloy nano-colloid on a large area substrate.

  • In this study, conventional biofilters packed with flexible synthetic polyurethane (PU) foam carriers were operated to remove toluene from a contaminated air stream. PU foams containing various adsorbents (e.g., zeolite, sepiolite, dolomite and barite) were synthesized for the biofilter media and their adsorption characteristics of toluene were determined. Adsorption capacity of PU-adsorbent foam was in the order of PU-dolomite ${\approx}$ PU-zeolite > PU-sepiolite > PU-barite. During the biofiltration experiment, influent toluene concentration was in the range of 0-160 ppm and EBRT (i.e., empty bed residence time) was 45 seconds. Pressure drop of the biofilter bed was 4-5 mm $H_2O/m$ column height. The maximum removal capacity was in the order of PU-dolomite > PU-zeolite > PU-sepiolite > PU-barite, while the complete removal capacity was in the order of PU-dolomite > PU-sepiolite > PU-zeolite > PU-barite. The better biofiltration performance in PU-dolomite foam was because PU-dolomite foam had lower density and higher porosity than the others providing favorable conditions for microbial growth. The results of biodegradation kinetic analysis showed that PU-dolomite foam had higher maximum removal rate ($V_m\;=\;11.04\;g$ toluene/kg dry material/day) and saturation constant ($K_s\;=\;26.57\;ppm$) than the other PU foams. This supports that PU-dolomite foam was better than the others for biofilteration of toluene.

  • Ssangjeon tungsten ore deposits is a complex pegmatite deposits embedded along the contact between pre-Cambrian Buncheon granite gneiss and amphibolite. This pegmatite vein developed 2 km along the strike and thickness varies from 10m to 40m. Mineral constituent of the normal pegmatite are quartz, microcline, plagioclase, muscovite, biotite, tourmaline and garnet. The vein paragenesis is complicated by repeated deposition of quartz but three distinct depositional stage can be recognized. Quartz A stage is the stage of the earliest milky white quartz deposition as a rock forming mineral of normal pegmatite. Quartz B stage is the stage of gray to dark gray quartz replace earlier formed normal pegmatite minerals. Quartz C stage is the stage of latest white translucent massive quartz replace quartz A and B. Tungsten ore minerals and other sulfide minerals were precipitated during quartz B stage. Ore minerals are ferberite and scheelite. Minor amount of molybdenite, arsenopyrite, pyrrhotite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, galena, pentlandite, bismuthinite, native bismuth and marcasite accompanied. Fluid inclusion in quartz A and B are gaseous inclusions and liquid inclusions are contained in quartz C as a primary inclusions. Salinity of inclusions in quartz A and B ranges from 4.5 to 9.5 wt. % and from 5.1 to 6.0 wt. % equivalent NaCl respectively. Homogenization temperature of quartz A; quartz B and quartz C ranges from 415 to $465^{\circ}C$, from 397 to $441^{\circ}C$ and from 278 to $357^{\circ}C$. $CO_2$ content of the ore fluid increased at the ends of quartz B stage.

  • The vast stores of biomass available in the worldwide have the potential to displace significant amounts of fuels that are currently derived from petroleum sources. Fast pyrolysis of biomass is one of possible paths by which we can convert biomass to higher value products. The wood pyrolysis oil (WPO), also known as the bio crude oil (BCO), have been regarded as an alternative fuel for petroleum fuels to be used in diesel engine. However, the use of BCO in a diesel engine requires modifications due to low energy density, high water contents, low acidity, and high viscosity of the BCO. One of the easiest way to adopt BCO to diesel engine without modifications is emulsification of BCO with diesel and bio diesel. In this study, a diesel engine operated with diesel, bio diesel (BD), BCO/diesel, BCO/bio diesel emulsions was experimentally investigated. Performance and gaseous & particle emission characteristics of a diesel engine fuelled by BCO emulsions were examined. Results showed that stable engine operation was possible with emulsions and engine output power was comparable to diesel and bio diesel operation. However, in case of BCO/diesel emulsion operation, THC & CO emissions were increased due to the increased ignition delay and poor spray atomization and NOx & Soot were decreased due to the water and oxygen in the fuel. Long term validation of adopting BCO in diesel engine is still needed because the oil is acid, with consequent problems of corrosion and clogging especially in the injection system.

  • In this study, the performance characteristics of DNPH sampling were investigated in the collection and analysis of 5 carbonyl compounds (CC) in air using the cartridge products produced by three different makers. For these experiments, gaseous standards of 5 CCs were prepared to cover 9 concentration levels for each compound (33~2600 nmol). Some cartridge products exhibited relatively high blank values of acetaldehyde (AA) and propionaldehyde (PA). The recovery rates of all three cartridges showed moderate reduction as the molecular weight of CC increased. In addition, when the recovery rate was compared by percent error (%), the most stable patterns were achieved in the intermediate concentration range of 263~1312 nmol (in case of AA). The overall results of our study suggest that the optimal range of recovery for a given concentration range should be considered to obtain the most reliable data for the DNPH cartridge method.

  • The characteristics of heterogeneous photocatalytic decomposition were investigated at low concentration level of $O_3$on TiO$_2$for various operating parameters such as: loaded catalyst weight (0∼4 mg/$\textrm{cm}^2$), initial concentration of $O_3$(0.06∼10.0 ppm), gas flow rate (1.0 ∼ 2.5ι/min), and relative humidity (0∼80%). This study was conducted using a flow-type reactor at room temperature. Three kinds of pure TiO$_2$(P25, ST -01, and E- 23) were employed as photocatalyts. It was found that $O_3$removal ratio was identical, regardless of the loaded TiO$_2$weight in the range from 0.5 to 4.0 mg/$\textrm{cm}^2$. It was also found that higher initial ozone concentration results in greater oxidation rate of ozone and experimental data show kinetically a good agreement with Langmur-Hinshelwood kinetic model. We also observed that the removal ratio of $O_3$increases linearly with the increasing flow rate and also with the increasing relative humidity for each catalyst.

  • Ammonia is a very important constituent of the atmospheric environment because it is the most dominant gaseous alkaline species present in the atmosphere. Ammonia is known to affect ecosystems at relatively low concentration. Ammonia flux from livestock facilities can be regulated by a number of environmental factors (pH, ammonium ion, temperature, wind speed, etc). The increases in wind speed above manure from 0.0 m/s to 1.0 7m/s resulted in 2.5 times increases in ammonia flux. Wind speed and ammonia flux showed 0.982. A linear relationship with a correlation coefficient (r=0.982). When manure temperature increased from $3^{\circ}C$ to $36^{\circ}C$, the manure pH decreased approximately 0.30 to 0.46. As wind speed above the manure increased from 0.0 m/s to 1.07 m/s, ammonia flux increased approximately 2.5 times. The increasing manure temperature from $3^{\circ}C$ to $10^{\circ}C$, raised ammonia flux from 2.0 to 3.6 times (2.6 times in average similarly). The increases of manure temperature from $3^{\circ}C$ to $25^{\circ}C$ increased ammonia flux from 5.7 to 12.9 times (8.5 times in average). In this study, the correlation coefficient between ammonia flux and manure temperature was found from 0.972 to 0.989. Results of our research showed that ammonium ion concentration, pH of manure and wind speed were important factors in controlling the ammonia flux from manure livestock facilities.

  • The objective of this work is to produce solid biofuel from sawdust using the HTC (Hydrothermal carbonization) process. The HTC process of feedstock involves the raw material coming into contact with high temperature and pressurized water. The HTC process could produce gaseous, liquefied and solid products, but this study focused on solid product only as an alternative to coal. In this study, sawdust used for a feedstock and its moisture content was under 5%. Water was added with the feedstock to raise moisture content to 80% and also used catalysts. The HTC process was performed at temperature range from 200 to $270^{\circ}C$ and reaction time was 15 to 120 min. Rising temperature resulted in increasing the higher heating value (HHV) of HTC product. In case of adding catalyst, HHV of solid biofuel was higher and reaction occurred at lower temperature and pressure. Also, HTC solid product had been characterized and found to be hydrophobic, increased HHV (over 40%), and pelletized easily compared to raw material.

  • The YHB radial distribution functions of a linear gas molecule CO were calculated by a computer within the Stockmayer molecular potential molel, which assumed thc CO molecule as a simple dipolar molecule. To examine the validity of the obtained YHB radial distribution of CO gas molecule, the density dependent pressures of CO at several temperatures were also calculated. The calculated pressures showed a good agreement with literially known experimental CO pressure data. The temperatures examined were 273, 298, and 373 K and the densities were up to $0.013/{\AA}^3$ (maximum pressure = 1000 atm). Since the calculated pressures showed a good agreement with the experimental values, the obtained YHB radial distribution functions of CO molecule seemed good enough to obtain and predict various equilibrium physical and chemical quantities of CO molecule sensitive to density such as pressure. It was also found that in CO gas system the dipole-dipole interaction is effective up to approximately 2.5 molecular diameter.
