  • This paper deals with the effects of pulsating flow on volumetric efficiency, which may be generated during the gas exchange procedure, due to piston motion, valve event on intake and exhaust stroke and unsteady flow of turbocharger of a three-cylinder four stroke turbo-charged diesel engine. Consequently, volumetric efficiency affects significantly the engine performance; torque characteristics, fuel economy and further to emission and noise level. As the expansion ratio became larger the engine speed varies and torque increases, the pressure pulsation in an exhaust gas pipe acts as an increasing factor of intake air charging capacity totally. The phase and amplitude of pressure pulsation in the intake system only affects volumetric efficiency favorably, if it is well matched and tuned effectively to the engine. Thus, to verify the exact phase and amplitude of the pressure variation is the ultimate solution for the air-flow ratio assessment in the intake stroke. Some experimental results of pressure diagrams in the intake pipe and gas-flow of turbine in-outlet are presented, under various kinds of operating condition.

  • This study is on the pulsating combustion of premixed gas in a Rijke type combustor made of a honeycomb flame holder in a tube. Modelling for the onset condition of the oscillation is made by the ratio of the acoustic power generation based on the analysis of heat transfer to the power loss due to the thermoviscous dissipation and radiation. Experiment is performed for the characteristics of acoustic, thermal and combustion. It is shown that the theoretical modelling for the oscillation may be used as a limit condition. And the combustion analysis for the acoustic power generation is needed for better prediction of the onset condition. Experimental result shows that, by pulsation, the flame length is shortened and the flame temperature is decreased with increase in the heat transfer coefficient. The NO$_{x}$ concentration in the exhaust gas is significantly reduced by pulsation and the concentration of unburned hydrocarbon shows a little increase.e.

  • Hermetic rotary compressor is one of the most important components for air conditioning system since it has a great effect on both the performance and the noise and vibration of the system. Noise and vibration of rotary compressor is occurred due to gas pulsation during compression process and unbalanced dynamic force. In order to reduce noise and vibration, It is necessary to identify sources of noise and vibration and effectively control them. Many approaches have been tried to identify noise sources of compressor. However, compressor noise source identification has proven to be difficult since the characteristics of compressor noise are complicated due to the interaction of the compressor parts and gas pulsation. In this work, Statistical Energy Analysis has been used to trace the energy flow in the compressor and identify transmission paths from the noise source to the sound field.

  • We usually divide the noise of exhaust system into pulsation noise and flow noise. Pulsation noise is the shock wave to occur when the burning gas of low pressure emits and include harmonic having basic frequency as the exhaust cycle of engine. Flow noise is the noise that is produced when gas flow emits into the atmosphere through the pipe and has the character of frequency like pink noise which has the high level of high frequency component. A muffler is divided into reflective type and absorptive type. We usually use the muffler compounding the property of them. In this study, it is the case of transfer matrix method that a muffler is compounded to analyze the elements of each section according to sound wave's proceed direction. But we use simple model. So, we use finite element method that takes short time to analyze. Acoustic analysis gives us transfer matrix to use FEA of SYSNOISE and we use STAR-CD for fluid analysis. We made database that is based on analytical results about the muffler of expansion type, extended type, offset type, reverse type, and perforated type and developed the muffler design system to perform work efficiently.

  • Low noise of air-conditioners is one of the most important issues because of the users' strong demand. The main source of noise in an air-conditioner is the compressor. Therefore, noise reduction in a compressor is quite significant as an element technology in the air-conditioner field. Recently, scroll compressors are widely used, because they feature low noise, due to less pulsation of gas pressure, than that of rotary compressors. For reduction of noise, the source of noise must be identified. This paper presents a detailed analysis to identify the noise source and shows the dominant factors of noise of the scroll compressor, which will make it possible to design a scroll compressor with low noise.

  • When Francis turbines operate at partial load, residual swirl in the draft tube causes low-frequency pulsation of pressure and power output. Scale effects and system response may bias the prediction of prototype behavior based on laboratory tests, but could be overcome by means of a 1D analytical model. This paper deals with the two most important features of such a model, the compliance and the source of excitation. In a distributed-parameter version, compliance should be represented as an exponential function of local pressure. Lack of similarity due to different Froude number can thus be compensated. The normally unknown gas content in the vortex cavity has significant influence on the pulsation, and should therefore be measured and considered as a test parameter.

  • Large-amplitude, combustion-induced oscillations are observed in most systems involving continuous flow, such as aeroengine afterburners, gas boilers and rocket motors. Strong furnace vibration is typically characterized by the presence of well developed standing waves in the furnace, generating high pressure pulsation and causing structural vibration of the furnace walls. 320MW NG boilers have been experienced high vibration frequently since reconstruction works. Excessive furnace vibration was encountered when a burner air rate is suddenly reduced during load zone changed from 270MW to 300MW. An investigation showed that the primary cause of the vibration was induced by combustion low air flow rate. This paper describes phenomenon examination on strong furnace vibration due to the change of boiler operating conditions.

  • During the hypothetical loss of coolant accident in the nuclear power plant the emergency core cooling water could not penetrate to the reactor core when the steam flow rate from the reactor core exceeds CCFL (Countercurrent flow limitation). The CCFL generated by earlier investigators are developed under the steady gas flow. However the flow instability in the reactor loop could generate oscillatory steam flow, hence their applicability under oscillating flow should be investigated. In this work, an experimental investigation of countercurrent flow in the vertical flow channel has been conducted under oscillatory gas flow. Pulsation of gas under oscillatory flow disturbs the flow pattern significantly and prevents flooding (CCFL) when its minimum value is less than the threshold gas flow rate value.

  • This study represents numerical study on the thermal and fluid flow characteristics of exhaust gas in a motorcycle muffler. The engine generates 125cc of displacement. Numerical analysis with computational fluid dynamics(CFD) was carried out to investigate the exhaust gas that flow into a motorcycle muffler. The STAR-CD S/W used to analyze three dimensional steady state and transient in a muffler. The Navier-Stokes Equation is solved with SAMPLE and PISO method in cartesian coordinates system. As the numerical result, it could be confirmed pulsating pressure generated from inlet of muffler become closer to the atmospheric pressure through baffle. Also the numerical result was almost identical to experimental result and, through the comparison, the reliability of numerical result was confirmed.
