  • Machine Learning has introduced many solutions in data science, but its application in IoT faces significant challenges, due to the limitations in memory size and processing capability of constrained devices. In this paper we design an automatic gamma radiation detection and identification embedded system that exploits the power of TinyML in a SiPM micro radiation sensor leveraging the Edge Impulse platform. The model is trained using real gamma source data enhanced by software augmentation algorithms. Tests show high accuracy in real time processing. This design has promising applications in general-purpose radiation detection and identification, nuclear safety, medical diagnosis and it is also amenable for deployment in small satellites.

  • We investigated optimal conditions for the microbial transformation of $\gamma$-butyrobetaine into L-carnitine by using Achromobacter cycloclast ATCC 21921. When the cells were cultivated in the medium containing $\gamma$-butyrobetaine as the sole carbon source for both cell growth and L-carnitine production, the maximum L-carnitine production was 2.9 g/L and the conversion yield from $\gamma$-butyrobetaine to L-carnitine was as low as 30.9 mol%. In order to enhance the L-carnitine production and the conversion yield, various carbon sources were added to the $\gamma$-butyronetaine containing basal medium. In the medium supplemented with glycerol, L-carnitine production was as high as 4.6 g/L and the conversion yield was 88.2 mol%, showing a significant improvement in L-carnitine synthesis compared to those in the medium without glycerol. We also examined the additional effect of quaternary ammonium compounds such as betaine and choline, which are similar in structure to $\gamma$-butyrobetaine and L-carnitien. It was observed that in the presence of those quaternary ammonium compounds, both the L-carnitine production rate and the conversion yield increased. In addition, we found that cell growth was inhibited by a $\gamma$-butyrobetaine concentration of more than 3%, while L-carnitine production was efficient at the $\gamma$-butyrobetaine concentration of 2-3%. By cultivating the cells in the optimal medium containing glycerol and choline, we obtained an L-carnitine concentration of 7.2 g/L with the conversion yield of 98.7 mol% in 4 days.

  • The west stone pagoda of Gameunssji temple site (National Treasure No. 112) has been damaged mainly by fracture, exfoliation and granular disintegration. In this study, the source area of the rocks using the west stone pagoda was examined in terms of petrological feature, magnetic susceptibility, and ${\gamma}-ray$ spectrometer. The stones include abundant crystal fragments of biotite, quartz and feldspars in the fine-grained matrix; they are petrographically discriminated to vitric-crystal tuff or crystal tuff. Measured magnetic susceptibility values are of from 10 to 20 $({\times}10^{-3}\;SI\;unit)$. From the ${\gamma}-ray$ spectrometer measurement K, eU, and eTh contents of the stones are about 3%, 0 to 8ppm, and 9 to 18 ppm, respectively. These features are used as indicators to presume the source area of the stones. Comparing the petrographical and chemical characteristics between the stones of the west stone pagoda and the country rocks near the Gameunsaji temple site, it is suggested that the most similar country rock to the stones could be dacitic volcanic rocks of the Beomgokri group in the Waeup basin. The Beomgokri group is lithostratigraphically divided into Waeupri tuff, Yongdongri tuff and Beomgokri volcanic rocks. Among the three rocks, the crystal tuff of the Beomgokri volcanic rocks seems likely to have been the source rock of the stones of the west stone pagoda.

  • Aluminum nitride (AlN) powders and whiskers were synthesized by a modified carbothermal reduction and nitridation where a ($NH_4)[Al(ethylenediaminetetraacetate)]{\cdot}2H_2O$ complex is used as precursor. The AlN powders were obtained by calcining the complex without mixing any carbon source under a flow of nitrogen in the temperature range 1200∼1500$^{\circ}$C and then burning out the residual carbon. The nitridation process was investigated by $^{27}Al$ magic-angle spinning (MAS) unclear magnetic resonance, infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The complex is pyrolyzed, converted to ${\rho}$- and ${\gamma}$- alumina and then nitridated to AlN without ${\gamma}-{\alpha}$ alumina transition. The morphology of ${\gamma}$-alumina, when it was converted to AlN, was retained, strongly indicating that ${\gamma}$-alumina is converted to AlN through solid-state $AlO_xN_y$, not through gaseous intermediates such as aluminum and aluminaum suboxides. AlN whiskers were obtained, when a (0001) sapphire was used as a catalyst.

  • High density polyethylene (HDPE) is degraded due to a radiation-induced oxidation when it is used as a neutron moderator in a neutron counter for a nuclear material accounting of spent fuels. The HDPE exposed to the gamma-ray emitted from the fission products in a spent nuclear fuel results in a radiation-induced degradation which changes its original molecular structure to others. So a neutron moderating power variation of HDPE, irradiated by a gamma radiation, was investigated in this work. Five HDPE moderator structures were exposed to the gamma radiation emitted from a $^{60}Co$ source to a level of $10^5-10^9$ rad to compare their post-irradiation properties. As a result of the neutron measurement test with 5 irradiated HDPE structures and a neutron measuring system, it was confirmed that the neutron moderating power for the $10^5$ rad irradiated HDPE moderator revealed the largest decrease when the un-irradiated pure one was used as a reference. It implies that a neutron moderating power variation of HDPE is not directly proportional to the integrated gamma dose rate. To clarify the cause of these changes, some techniques such as a FTIR, an element analysis and a densitometry were employed. As a result of these analyses, it was confirmed that the molecular structure of the gamma irradiated HDPEs had partially changed to others, and the contents of hydrogen and oxygen had varied during the process of a radiation-induced degradation. The mechanism of these changes cannot be explained in detail at present, and thus need further study.

  • The materials composed of the 3d series transition metals are introduced into the hydrocarbon steam-reforming reaction in order to enhance the $H_2$ production and abruptly depress the catalytic deactivation resulting from the strong sintering between the Ni component and the ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ support. The conventional impregnation method is used to synthesize the Ni/3d series metal/${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ materials through the sequentially loading Ni source and the 3d series metal (Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Cu, and Zn) sources onto the ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ support. The Mnloaded material exhibits a significantly higher reforming reactivity than the conventional Ni/${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ and the other Ni/3d series metal/${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ materials. Particularly the addition of Mn selectively improves the $H_2$ product selectivity by eliminating the formation of $CH_4$ and CO. The $H_2$ production is maximized at a value of 95% over Ni(0.3)/Mn(0.3)/${\gamma}-Al_2O_4$(1.0) with a butane conversion of 100% above $750^{\circ}C$ for up to 55 h.

  • The aim of this study was to investigate changes in 7 nutritional components (fatty acid, protein, fat, ash, total dietary fiber (TDF), $\gamma$-aminobutyric acid (GABA), and $\gamma$-oryzanol) of paddy rice (PR) and brown rice (BR) throughout the germination process, as measured at different shoot lengths (10 mm, 20 mm, and 30 mm). With the increase of shoot length, the nutritional components' concentrations increased, as compared to the concentrations measured before germination. Moreover, BR exhibited higher GABA, $\gamma$-oryzanol, and protein than PR. Among the components, TDF, GABA, and $\gamma$-oryzanol showed significant concentration differences throughout germination, while the others exhibited only slight variations. In particular, GABA and $\gamma$-oryzanol were predominantly increased in grains of 10 mm shoot length. These compounds might prove to be important factors from germinated rice. Additionally, the germinated cultivar 'Keunnun' might also prove to be a very important food source, owing to its high GABA and $\gamma$-oryzanol contents. These results suggest that variations in nutritional components related to the increase of shoot length may prove to be important when considering the beneficial aspects of rice on human health.

  • The measurement of gamma-ray spectrum of $^{nat}W(p,xn)$ reaction with natural tungsten were performed by using a high energy proton generated from a 100-MeV proton linear accelerator of the Korea Multi-purpose Accelerator Complex (KOMAC). Gamma rays generated by various nuclides generated through the nuclide were measured using a gamma-ray spectroscopy system composed of HPGe detector. A gamma-ray standard source was used for energy calibration and efficiency measurement of the detector. Analysis of the gamma rays observed in the measured spectra showed that the radionuclides produced were $^{167}Re$, $^{178}Re$, $^{179}Re$, $^{180}Re$, $^{181}Re$, $^{182}Re$, $^{184}Re$, $^{172}Ta$, $^{174}Ta$, $^{178}Ta$, $^{182}Ta$, $^{184}Ta$, $^{175}W$, $^{176}W$, $^{177}W$ and $^{179}W$. Nuclides were generated. The results of this study will be applied to nuclear fusion, astrophysics, and nuclear medicine applications in the future.

  • This study was done to investigate effects of ${\gamma}$ irradiated beef feeding on the formation of gluta thione S transferase placental form positive(GST P+) foci, lipid peroxidation, cytochrome P450 system and microsomal glucose 6 phosphate activity in diethylnitrosamine(DEN) initiated rat hepatocarci nogenesis. Weaning Sprague Dawley male rats were fed the diet containing ${\gamma}$ irradiatied ground beef at the dose of 0, 3, 5kGy as a 20% of protein source for 8 weeks. One week after feeding, rats were intraperitoneally injected twice with a dose of DEN(50mg/kg BW). As a promoter, 0.05% phenobarbital was fed in drinking water from one week after DEN treatment until the end of experiment. At the end of 8th week, rats were sacrificed and hepatic GST P+ foci, microsomal malondialdehyde(MDA) and conjugated diene contents were determined. In addition, cytochrome P450 content and the activities of NADPH cytochrome P450 reductase and glucose 6 phosphatase were also measured. There was no significant effect by gamma irradiation on microsomal MDA content, conjugated diene, cytochrome P450 content and activities of NADPH cytochrome P450 reductase and glucose 6 phosphatase. However with DEN treatment, microsomal MDA content and conjugated diene contents were significantly changed. Cytochrome P450 content was also significantly increased while microsomal glucose 6 phophatase activity was significantly decreased with DEN treatment. However activity of NADPH cytochrome P450 reductase was not affected. An interesting finding in this study was that the number and area of hepatic GST P+ foci of the rats fed gamma irradiated beef were significantly(p<0.05) lower than those of the control. Such a lowering effect on GST P+ foci formation was highest at the dose of 3kGy than others. Overall results suggest that the consumption of low dose of gamma irradiated beef does not affect the formation of lipid peroxide, cytochrome P450 system and membrane stability.

  • Thirty two different kinds of domestic plastic films for use in measuring high gamma-ray dose have been collected and their dosimetric characteristics investigated with the help of a Co-60 gamma radiation source. Among them a rigid polyvinyl chloride(PVC) film of 0.06mm in thickness which is manufactured by Lucky Chemical Co., Korea, seem to be the most suitable one for this purpose. The relation between optical density at 3100$\AA$ and radiation exposure in this PVC film was linear in the range of 0.6$\times$10$^{6}$ R to 1.3$\times$10$^{7}$ R, and also the film showed a good reproducibility within 9% under the standard experimental condition. The effect of absorbed dose, oxygen content of surrounding atmosphere and irradiation temperature have also been studied for this film. It appeared to have a good property in the dosimetrical point of view.
