  • Due to various types of Zn coatings for many decades for various applications, it is imperative to study and compare their corrosion resistance properties of some of these. Here, we introduce a systematic methodology for evaluation and validation of corrosion protection properties of metallic coatings. According to this methodology, samples are were exposed in an advanced cyclic corrosion test chamber according to ISO 14993, and removed at the end of each withdrawal for respective corrosion and electrochemical characterization to evaluate both barrier and galvanic protection properties. Corrosion protection properties of coatings were evaluated by visual examination according to ISO 10289, mass loss and subsequent corrosion rate measurements, electrochemical properties, and advanced electrochemical scanning techniques. In this study, corrosion protection properties of a commercial zinc rich coating (ZRC) on AISI 1020 mild steel substrates were evaluated and benchmarked against hot dip galvanized (HDG). Results were correlated, and corrosion protection capabilities of the two coatings were compared. The zinc rich coating performed better than hot dip galvanized coating in terms of overall corrosion protection properties, according to the exposure and experimental conditions used in this study. It proved to be a suitable candidate to replace hot dip galvanized coatings for desired applications.

  • It is well known that the formation of $SiO_2$, $Al_2O_3$ and/or other oxides at the steel surface during the annealing process deteriorates the surface quality of galvanized steels. It is important to minimize oxide formation during the annealing process for the superior surface quality of galvanized steels. In order to minimize the oxide formation on the steel surface, antimony was chosen as an alloying element to the commercial steels. Then, the effect of alloying element on the oxidation behavior was investigated. A small amount of antimony was added to two types of steels, one with 0.1% C, 1.0% Si, 1.5% Mn, 0.08% P, and the other with 0.002% C, 0.001% Si, 0.104% Mn, 0.01% P. Then, the oxidation behavior was investigated from $650{\sim}900^{\circ}C$ in the air. The addition of antimony to the steels retarded the outward diffusion of elements during the oxidation, resulting in reduction of the oxidation rate.

  • In the automotive industry, the hole expanding test is widely used to assess the formability of punched holes in sheets. This test provides a good representation of formability within the framework defined by the ISO 16630 standard. During hole expanding tests on galvanized high strength steels, a negative effect was observed when there was a delay between hole punching and expansion, as compared to performing both operations directly. This effect is believed to be caused by hydrogen aging, which occurs when hydrogen diffuses towards highly-work hardened edges. Therefore, the aim of this study is to demonstrate the migration of hydrogen towards work-hardened edges in high strength Zn-coated steel sheets using a novel Thermal Desorption Analyzer (TDA) designed for small samples. This newly-developed TDA setup allows for the quantification of local diffusible hydrogen near cut edges. With its induction heating and ability to analyze Zn-coated samples while reducing artifacts, this setup offers flexible heat cycles. Through this method, a hydrogen gradient is observed over short distances in shear-cut galvanized steel sheets after a certain period of time following punching.

  • For the last decade, remarkable progress in the coating weight uniformity of hot dip galvanized product has been made to overcome the tightening quality constraints and produce cost-effective galvanized products. This progress results from research and development works for more efficient air knife, more accurate model of coating process, more precise measurement of coating weight and more efficient control logics. The activities for an efficient mathematical model to predict coating weight and several control logics which has been implemented on the No.1 CGL, No. 2 CGL, and PGL at KwangYang Steel Works are reviewed in this article.

  • This research was carried out to investigate the corrosion prevention effect in the water distribution system by galvanized zinc-brass pipe which is using potential between brass and zinc. As a result of this study, pH and conductivity of influent were constant in spite of its installation, and it was difficult to estimate the effect of the installation with temporary increased and reduced concentration of Zn and Fe ions, respectively. However, since the corrosion rate of the steel coupon with galvanized zinc-brass pipe was relatively low, it has an effect of inhibiting corrosion.

  • Welding technology is applicable in many kinds of fields, with the help of its advantages such as easy operational procedure and structural simplification. However, in the process of welding, hazardous materials and fumes cause huge fire broke-outs, explosions, and health-conscious problems. Also, as heavy metals in fumes have a harmful effect on the environment, recently, this has emerged as a urgent social issue. This study has been aimed at the recommendation of the most environment-friendly, among materials currently used in plumbing welding, and it has been done at the result of the analysis of amount, ingredient, and size in collected fumes created in the experiment of welding five rods to galvanized steel pipes and steel pipe ones. At the test result, due to the effect of Zn-coating, galvanized steel pipes, when welded to rods, created more fumes than steel pipe ones. In the mean time, when it comes to welding rods, among five, WR-03 produced fumes the least. Therefore, a combination of the test results clearly indicates that the case of welding WR-03 to cast-iron pipes turned out to be the most environment-friendly.

  • Because of the toxicity of hexavelant chromium ion, treatments of metallic surface with chromate compounds to retard corrosion are undesirable for safety control in industrial uses and protection of environment. In this study, we investigated several compounds such as inorganic, organic, and polymer materials in order to substitute the chromate conversion treatment on steel sheet. The corrosion property was investigated in a salt spray tester with 3.5 $wt.{\%}\;NaCI\;at\;35^{\circ}C.$ The results showed that the zirconium/silane/polymer triple coatings on the galvanized steel exhibited a significant retardation of corrosion. Although the multicoating system needs a complexed processing, we can confirm a possibility of development of a chromate-free chemical conversion treatment for galvanized steel sheet.
