The Cahn-Hilliard equation is modeled to describe the dynamics of phase separation in glass and polymer systems. A priori error estimates for the Cahn-Hilliard equation have been studied by the authors. In order to control accuracy of approximate solutions, a posteriori error estimation of the Cahn-Hilliard equation is obtained by discontinuous Galerkin method.
In this paper, we approximate the solution of the coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations by using a fully discrete finite element scheme based on the standard Galerkin method in space and implicit midpoint discretization in time. The proposed scheme guarantees the conservation of the total mass and the energy. First, a priori error estimates for the fully discrete Galerkin method is derived. Second, the existence of the approximated solution is proved by virtue of the Brouwer fixed point theorem. Moreover, the uniqueness of the solution is shown. Finally, convergence orders of the fully discrete Crank-Nicolson scheme are discussed. The end of the paper is devoted to some numerical experiments.

A discontinuous Galerkin method with interior penalty terms is presented for linear Sobolev equation. On appropriate finite element spaces, we apply a symmetric interior penalty Galerkin method to formulate semidiscrete approximate solutions. To deal with a damping term $\nabla{\cdot}({\nabla}u_t)$ included in Sobolev equations, which is the distinct character compared to parabolic differential equations, we choose special test functions. A priori error estimate for the semidiscrete time scheme is analyzed and an optimal $L^\infty(L^2)$ error estimation is derived.
Considerable efforts are required to develop a monotone, robust and stable high-order numerical scheme for solving the hyperbolic system. The discontinuous Galerkin(DG) method is a natural choice, but elimination of the spurious oscillations from the high-order solutions demands a new development of proper limiters for the DG method. There are several available limiters for controlling or removing unphysical oscillations from the high-order approximate solution; however, very few studies were directed to analyze the exact role of the limiters in the hyperbolic systems. In this study, the performance of the several well-known limiters is examined by comparing the high-order($p^1$, $p^2$, and $p^3$) approximate solutions with the exact solutions. It is shown that the accuracy of the limiter is in general problem-dependent, although the Hermite WENO limiter and maximum principle limiter perform better than the TVD and generalized moment limiters for most of the test cases. It is also shown that application of the troubled cell indicators may improve the accuracy of the limiters under some specific conditions.
Dynamic behaviors are analyzed for a flexble spinning disk with angular acceleration, considering geometric nonlinearity. Based upon the Kirchhoff plate theory and the von Karman strain theory, the nonlinear governing equations are derived which are coupled equations with the in-plane and out-of-planedisplacements. The governing equations are discretized by using the Galerkin approximation. With the discretized nonlinear equations, the time responses are computed by using the generalized-$\alpha$ method and the Newton-Raphson method. The analysis shows that the existence of angular acceleration increases the displacements of the spinning disk and makes the disk unstable.
The Lotka-McKendrick equation which describes the evolution of a single population under the phenomenological conditions is developed from the well-known Malthus’model. In this paper, we introduce the Lotka-McKendrick equation for the description of the dynamics of a population. We apply a discontinuous Galerkin finite element method in age-time domain to approximate the solution of the system. We provide some numerical results. It is experimentally shown that, when the mortality function is bounded, the scheme converges at the rate of $h^2$ in the case of piecewise linear polynomial space. It is also shown that the scheme converges at the rate of $h^{3/2}$ when the mortality function is unbounded.
In this paper, we consider a semi-discrete mixed discontinuous Galerkin method with an interior penalty to approximate the solution of parabolic problems. We define an auxiliary projection to analyze the error estimate and obtain optimal error estimates in $L^{\infty}(L^2)$ for the primary variable u, optimal error estimates in $L^2(L^2)$ for ut, and suboptimal error estimates in $L^{\infty}(L^2)$ for the flux variable ${\sigma}$.

The superconvergence of the Sloan iterate obtained from a Galerkin method for the approximate solution of the singular integral equation based on the use of two sets of orthogonal polynomials is investigated. The discrete Sloan iterate using Gaussian quadrature to evaluate the integrals in the equation becomes the Nystr$\ddot{o}$m approximation obtained by the same rules. Consequently, it is impossible to expect the faster convergence of the Sloan iterate than the discrete Galerkin approximation in practice.
In this study, the fracture phenomena of optical disks are discussed by theoretical and experimental approaches and then some recommendations are presented to prevent the fracture. Linear equations of motion are discretized by using the Galerkin approximation. From the discretized equations, the dynamic responses are computed by the generalized- time integration method. As a fracture criterion for optical disks, the critical crack length is presented. From experimental methods, the fracture procedure is analyzed. The fracture occurs when disks have crack on the inner radius of the disks. Since the crack growth and the fracture result from the stress concentration on the tip of the crack, a measure should be taken to overcome the stress concentration. This problem can be resolved by the structural modification of a disk. This study proposes 3 types of improved optical disks.
We investigate an efficient approximation of solution to stochastic Burgers equation driven by an additive space-time noise. We discuss existence and uniqueness of a solution through the Orstein-Uhlenbeck (OU) process. To approximate the OU process, we introduce the Karhunen-$Lo{\grave{e}}ve$ expansion, and sparse grid stochastic collocation method. About spatial discretization of Burgers equation, two separate finite element approximations are presented: the conventional Galerkin method and Galerkin-conservation method. Numerical experiments are provided to demonstrate the efficacy of schemes mentioned above.
