  • In this study the concepts on the elongation, compactness and equivalent ellipse of catchment plan-forms are applied to the real basins considering their theoretical frameworks. The catchment plan-forms and corresponding equivalent ellipses, obtained from GIS, are inspected on downstream directions. As a result the catchment plan-forms seem to be the population of the basin shapes which come from the random interaction between two conjectures on Hack's law being controversial recently. The ratio of the maximum and minimum inertia moments of the catchment plan-form Ri is more sensitive to evaluate the elongation of the basin shapes than the ratio of the main channel length and diameter of circle which has the same area as the catchment plan-form E. The catchment plan-forms compactness measures show distinct aspects according to their different definitions. These results are caused by the difficulties to quantification of the shapes and the composite consideration with more than two compactness measures and the fractal analysis are therefore required to recover them.

  • In general, problems of delimitating trading area are that it takes much efforts depending on regions and the results are not scientific due to agencies' own rules and criteria. Especially, areas like Hongik University Station, where countless stores are opening and closing simultaneously, the field survey needs even more time and expenses. Despite of its drawbacks, it has been considered that the field survey is the most credible method in delimitating trading area. The purpose of this study, therefore, is reducing the field survey when agencies delimitate trade area by maximizing use of previously built GIS database and utilizing spatial analysis. Publicly notified individual land value and floating population of Gwanak-gu were utilized to delimitate trading areas. For an evaluation method, the study results were compared to other trading area boundaries.

  • The purpose of the present study is to construct a rural development strategy from the nexus between spatial changes in specialized crops and suitable cultivation area of the crops. This paper pays particular attention to identify product life cycle of specialized crops in rural areas and estimate the impact of climate change on alterations in spatial distribution of the crops. In order to do so, first of all, this study applies multi-level model (Random coefficient model) to estimate the regional coefficient of five orchard crops. It utilizes the data 1995 to 2010 Korea Agricultural Census. Futhermore, it also adopts overlay analysis by ArcGIS to identify the development path of the crops and the relationship with climate change. Based on the results, it suggests a mechanism activating regional agriculture. The findings propose re-searching and relocating specialized regions of the crops. Especially, it proves each rural area can drive the new agricultural strategy to strengthen regional agriculture by estimating the relationship between development of specialized crops and suitable cultivation areas. For instance, shifting specialized crops in particular regions and enriching genetic or species varieties can be primary measures and it will contribute to improve the reliable base for income sources in the rural communities. This paper also offers specific policy implications regarding rural development plans in response to crops' life cycle and climate changes.

  • A Grid-based daily evapotranspiration(ET) prediction model which calculates temporal and spatial ET with a complementary relationship of Morton(1983) was developed. The model was programmed by C-language and uses ASCII formatted map data of DEM(Digital Elevation Model) and land use. Daily ET within the watershed is calculated and the results of temporal variations and spatial distributions of ET are presented by using GRASS(Geographic Resources Analysis Support System). To verify the applicability of the model, it was applied to the part of Bocheong stream basin (76.5$\textrm{km}^2$) located in the upstream of Dacheong Dam watershed. The result shows that the estimated evapotranspiration in 1995 was 766.1mm and 22% increased after correction radiation for slope and area.

  • Objectives: Busan is reported to have the highest mortality rate among 16 provinces in Korea, as well as considerable health inequality across its districts. This study sought to examine overall and cause-specific mortality and deprivation at the town level in Busan, thereby identifying towns and causes of deaths to be targeted for improving overall health and alleviating health inequality. Methods: Standardized mortality ratios (SMRs) for all-cause and four specific leading causes of death were calculated at the town level in Busan for the years 2005 through 2008. To construct a deprivation index, principal components and factor analysis were adopted, using 10% sample data from the 2005 census. Geographic information system (GIS) mapping techniques were applied to compare spatial distributions between the deprivation index and SMRs. We fitted the Gaussian conditional autoregressive model (CAR) to estimate the relative risks of mortality by deprivation level, controlling for both the heterogeneity effect and spatial autocorrelation. Results: The SMRs of towns in Busan averaged 100.3, ranging from 70.7 to 139.8. In old inner cities and towns reclaimed for replaced households, the deprivation index and SMRs were relatively high. CAR modeling showed that gaps in SMRs for heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, and physical injury were particularly high. Conclusions: Our findings indicate that more deprived towns are likely to have higher mortality, in particular from cardiovascular disease and physical injury. To improve overall health status and address health inequality, such deprived towns should be targeted.

  • In this study the infinite slope model, one of the physical landslide models has been suggested to evaluate the susceptibility of the landslide. However, applying the infinite slope model in regional study area can be difficult or impossible because of the difficulties in obtaining and processing of large spatial data sets. With limited site investigation data, uncertainties were inevitably involved with. Therefore, the probabilistic analysis method such as Monte Carlo simulation and the GIS based infinite slope stability model have been used to evaluate the probability of failure. The proposed approach has been applied to practical example. The study area in Boeun area been selected since the area has been experienced tremendous amount of landslide occurrence. The geometric characteristics of the slope and the mechanical properties of soils like to friction angle and cohesion were obtained. In addition, coefficient of variation (COV) values in the uncertain parameters were varied from 10% to 30% in order to evaluate the effect of the uncertainty. The analysis results showed that the probabilistic analysis method can reduce the effect of uncertainty involved in input parameters.

  • For the successful operation of unmanned ground vehicles(UGVs), optimal path planning should be considered with trafficability analysis, threat analysis, and so on. From among these, trafficability analysis is immensely important for safeness of UGVs especially in the case of driving the off-road such as unpaved road, grassland, and open fields. Geographical information has a pivotal role in extracting data and measuring cost for specified regions of interest. In this paper, we review possibilities to apply Land Cover Map(LCM) as a new, fundamental source and propose a new generation method of trafficability analysis map for optimal path planning of UGV. The simulation results show that the proposed method significantly improve the previous method by applying LCM either alone or in combination with the other GIS.

  • This study proposes a differential method to analyze the properties of the topographic surface driven from lidar imagery. Although airborne lidar imagery provides elevation information rapidly, a sequence of extraction processes are needed to acquire semantic information about objects such as terrain, roads, trees, vegetation, and buildings. For the processes, the properties present in a given lidar data need to be analyzed. In order to investigate the geometric characteristics of the surface, this study employs eigenvalues of the Hessian matrix. For experiments, a lidar image containing university campus buildings with the point density of about 1 meter was processed and the results show that the approach is effective to obtain the properties of each land object Surface.
