Whitening and anti-wrinkle effect of Spirodela polyrhiza extracts (부평초 추출물의 미백 및 항주름 효과)

  • The antioxidant, whitening, and anti-wrinkle activity of Spirodela polyrhiza extracts and fractions were evaluated to determine its efficacy as a functional cosmetic material. 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl and 2,2'-azinobis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid radical scavenging activities were 44.2 and 74.3%, respectively, at 100 ㎍/mL of SE-E (the ethyl acetate fraction of 70% ethanol extract). To measure anti-wrinkle effects, procollagen biosynthesis and matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1) inhibition activity were determined. At 25 ㎍/mL of SE (70% ethanol extract), the biosynthesis activity was 48.5%, and SE-E showed the best activity (57.8%) at the same concentration. MMP-1 inhibition activity of SE and SE-E was 13.4 and 28.5%, respectively, at 25 ig/mL. Finally, the inhibition of cellular melanin synthesis and cellular tyrosinase were measured to determine the whitening effect; at 25 ㎍/mL, the inhibition activities of SE were 9.6 and 13.8%, respectively, and those for SE-E were 15.4 and 22.0%, respectively. Our results confirmed the possibility of SE and SE-E as effective functional materials. Further research investigating the antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer activities of S. polyrhiza is necessary to confirm its potential use in the food, cosmetics, and drug industries.

  • The purpose of this study is to research into the characteristics of the printed hooks of ${\ulcorner}$Ch'un-ch'iu(春秋)${\lrcorner}$ commentary in Chosun dynasty by analyzing the types and forms of the existing printed books through the investigation of the bibliographic records of the books. To achieve this purpose, this study selected some of the 'Chak-pan' catalog(冊板目錄) printed in Chosun dynasty which has relatively clear and accurate history and investigated the block printing's condition of the printed books of ${\ulcorner}$Ch'un-ch'iu(春秋)${\lrcorner}$ commentary. In addition. a comprehensive book catalog of ${\ulcorner}$Ch'un-ch'iu(春秋)${\lrcorner}$ commentary was created by retrieving old book catalog from databases by several authoritative information centers and university libraries. Based on this catalog, this research created a new 'Union Catalog(綜合書目)' which contains bibliographies of the ${\ulcorner}$Ch'un-ch'iu(春秋)${\lrcorner}$ commentary through field investigations by identifying, picture-taking. and copying the real books. The new union catalog functions as the basis of the bibliographic analysis of this research.

Quality Comparison of Beef from Outdoor-Reared before Finishing and Indoor-Reared Hanwoo (비육전 방목 및 옥내사육한 한우육의 품질 비교)

  • This study was carried out to compare the quality of beef from outdoor-reared before finishing and indoor-reared Hanwoo. Among the experimental animals, $28{\pm}4$ mon-aged Hanwoo cows (n=5) were outdoor-reared for 7 mon (April-November) and then indoor-reared for 6 mono The 6 mon-aged Hanwoo steers (n=10) were indoor-reared for 24 mono The M. longissimus from all animals were stored at $4{\pm}0.2^{\circ}C$ for 7 days. Carcasses from outdoor-reared cattle before finishing were lighter, firmer, maturer, and leaner than indoor-reared (p<0.05). The beef from outdoor-reared cattle had lower crude fat and n-6 PUFA contents, n-6/n-3 ratio, and higher n-3 PUFA and SFA contents than indoor-reared (p<0.05). The pH and water-holding capacity were lower in beef from outdoor-reared cattle than in indoor-reared (p<0.05). The aroma pattern by electronic nose was discriminately different between beef from outdoor-reared and indoor-reared cattle. During storage, beef from outdoor-reared cattle showed lower lipid and myoglobin oxidation stabilities, and a darker and less red color than indoor-reared.

A Study on the Publication of Liudao Pushuo, One of Mengshan De-yi's Works (몽산(蒙山) 덕이(德異)의 『몽산화상육도보설(蒙山和尙六道普說)』 판본고(板本考))

  • This thesis is a study of the printed books of Liudao Pushuo(六道普說), one of Mengshan(蒙山)'s works. Mengshan De-yi(德異) lived in the Song(宋) and Yuan(元) Dynasty and was a Buddhist monk of Linji Chan(臨濟宗). Liudao Pushuo exists only in Korea, and there is no copy in China. Liudao Pushuo is a summary of the preachings of Mengshan about the Ten dharma-worlds(十法界) which include the six realms(六道) and the four kinds of holy men(四聖). There are 22 printed books in Korea. This study analyzed their physical descriptions and structures. As a result, all the printed books have 'sajudanbyoun(四周單邊)' except one book that is 'julchopjang(折帖裝)' of 'Bulgapsa(佛甲寺)'. There are also ten books with 'Heukku(黑口) and naehyang heukumi(內向黑魚尾)'. This indicates that those were typical of the printing type of the early days of the Joseon(朝鮮) Dynasty. In addition, the books with 13 characters in one line(13字本) were common. All 22 printed books were published in the $15^{th}$ and 16th century. This study confirms that Liudao Pushuo was handed down in the Goryeo(高麗) from China and actively published in the 15th and 16th century. This shows that Mengshan's Seon(禪) had a significant effect on Buddhism in Korea.

A WINTERING TEST OF THE CRAWL-HELD ANCHOVY (축양 멸치의 월동시험)

  • Since no medium-sized anchovies for skipjack baits are caught during the winter season in the Korean waters, the demand for the live baits in the winter season is met with crawl-stocked anchovies. Authors conducted a test on the wintering of the anchovies which were caught in the early November and acclimated for 22days in a crawl. The wintering crawl was kept in the inlet near Chungmu City, which is situated in the southern coast of Korea, for 4 months through December 1, 1971 to March 31, 1972. 1. The lowest water temperature of $7.2^{\circ}C$ recorded on March 1, caused no significant mortality of the wintering anchovies. However, two operations, moving the crawl and repacling the crawl webbing, brought about a considerable mortality. The mortality of the anchovies, due to the crawl moving to the wintering place two kilometers away from the transient acclimating place, amounted to 1.5 percent in 9 days following the crawl moving. The replacement of the fouled crawl webbing with a new one also caused a mortality amounting to 1.7 percent in 5 days. 2. It is judged that the favorable wintering waters lie in the south and southeast coasts of Keoje Island, the south and southwest coast of Chungmu City, coasts around Namhae Island, and the east coast of Dolsan Island. Jinhae Bay is not suited for the wintering because of its low water temperature in winter 3. The wintering anchovies wvere fed, once a day through the test period, with 4 kg of finely minced fresh anchovy for 57days in the early period, and with 2kg of compound pellet fish food for the rest of the period. Fatness coefficient of the wintering anchovies showed a slight increase in the latter half of the period.

Development of Continuous Clean Bioprocess for Kasugamycin Production (Kasugamycin 생산을 위한 연속 청정생물공정 개발)

  • Continuous immobilized-cell culture was carried out for the production of kasugamycin, a secondary metabolite by a filamentous bacteria, Streptomyces kasugaensis, with an intention of reducing waste generation. A sporulation medium was developed for production of bulk amounts of spores, and the spores were entrapped into celite biosupports for immobilization. It was possible to effectively keep the immobilized-cells inside the reactor during the continuous culture by an efficient immobilized cell separator of decantor type on the outlet of the fermentor. Using this continuous immobilized-cell fermentor system, we investigated the effects of feed substrate and phosphate concentrations on kasugamycin production and chemical oxygen demand(COD). Comparing with the conventional suspended-cell batch culture, the kasugamycin productivity was observed to increase by 2.5 times, whereas COD per unit kasugamycin production decreased by 2.3 times in the continuous immobilized-cell culture. Based on these results, the continuous immobilized-cell system was considered to be a cleaner bioprocess than the conventional batch suspended-cell system.

  • Mitochondria in the L. edodes was separated and purified by stepped sucrose density gradient centrifugation. The activity of mitochondrial ATP synthase has been investigated during various illumination times at each wavelength within the range of 400 nm to 700 nm. The stimulation of above activity increased by two times compared with nonilluminated control group when the illumination was given for 15 seconds at 470 nm wavelength. The optimal pH and temperature of this light-induced mitochondrial ATP synthase were 7.5 and $54^{\circ}C$, respectively. The activity of this enzyme increased by 26%, 25% and 14%, respectively, when there were 1 mmole $Fe^{3+}$, 0.5 mmole $Fe^{2+}$, and 5 mmole ${SO_4}^{2-}$ ion, and was inhibited by 5 mmole $Co^{2+}$, 5 mmole $Mn^{2+}$, 1 mmole $Ca^{2+}$, 0.1 mmole $Na^+$, 5 mmole $CN^-$, and 0.1 mmole ${CO_3}^{2-}$ ion. But $Na^+$ and $K^+$ ion did not affect the activity of enzyme.

Experimental Investigation of the Combined Effects of Heat Exchanger Geometries on Nucleate Pool Boiling Heat Transfer in a Scaled IRWST (열교환기 형상이 축소한 IRWST 내부의 풀핵비등에 미치는 복합적인 영향에 대한 실험적 연구)

  • In an effort to determine the combined effects of major parameters of heat exchanger tubes on the nucleate pool boiling heat transfer in the scaled in-containment refueling water storage tank (IRWST), a total of 1,966 data for q'quot; versus ${\Delta}T$ has been obtained using various combinations of tube diameters, surface roughness, and tube orientations. The experimental results show that (1) increased surface roughness enhances heat transfer for both horizontal and vertical tubes, (2) the two heat transfer mechanisms, i.e.,enhanced heat transfer for both horizontal and vertical tubes, (2) the two heat transfer mechanisms, i.e., enhanced heat transfer due to liquid agitation by bubbles generated and reduced heat transfer by the formation of large vapor slugs and bubble coalescence are different in two regions of low heat fluxes (q'quot; $\leq$50kW/$m^2)$ and high heat fluxes (q'quot; $\geq$50kW/$m^2)$ depending on the orientation of tubes and the degree of surface roughness, and (3) the heat transfer rate decreases as the tube diameter is increased for both horizontal and vertical tubes, but the effect of tube diameter on the nucleate pool boiling heat transfer for vertical tubes is greater than that for horizontal tubes. Two empirical heat transfer correlations for q'quot;, one for horizontal tubes and the other for vertical tubes, are obtained in terms of surface roughness $({\varepsilon})$ and tube diameter (D). Studies on Antioxidant Effect of Mushroom Complex (버섯복합물의 항산화 효과)

  • In this study, we evaluated the antioxidant effects of Cordyceps, Ganoderma lucidum (Curtis) P. Karst and Phellinus linteus complexes. Three mushrooms were extracted using 70% ethanol, respectively, in ratios of 80:10:10(?). The electron-donating ability was measured using the DPPH radical mushroom complexes and showed effects of 66% in 500 ${\mu}g/ml$. ABTS radical cation decolorization measured 73% in 50 ${\mu}g/ml$ and had an effect similar to BHA in 500 ${\mu}g/ml$. In their superoxide anion radical scavenging ability, the mushroom complexes showed an effect of 41% in 10 ${\mu}g/ml$. The effect on the control of BHA was more than three times as high as BHA in 50 ${\mu}g/ml$ and 100 ${\mu}g/ml$ concentration. The results showed that lipid oxidation is an excellent inhibitor of lipid oxidation $Cu^{2+}$, compared to the $Fe^{2+}$ group. The results of superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity in the mushroom complexes showed a low effect of 13% in 500 ${\mu}g/ml$. Thus, the results of this study showed that the antioxidant effect of the mushroom complexes was excellent, indicating their potential as an antioxidant material.
