Adsorptive breakthrough modelling is essential for design of a sorption packed bed. In this work, breakthrough modelling of the furfural uptake in bagasse fly ash (BFA) packed bed has been performed. Effect of various parameters like bed height (Z = 15-60 cm), flow rate (Q = 0.02-0.04 L/min) and initial furfural concentration (Co = 50-200 mg/L) on the breakthrough curve of furfural sorption in a BFA packed bed have been studied. Enhanced breakthrough performance was observed for the higher value of Z, and lower values of Co and Q. For Co = 100 mg/L, packed bed operated at Q = 0.03 L/min and Z = 60 cm was found to have lowest adsorbent utilization rate of 5.61 g/L with highest breakthrough volume of 14.67 L. Bed depth service time and Thomas models well represented the experimental data points under all experimental conditions. It can be concluded that BFA can be utilized efficiently in continuous system for the removal of furfural. Overall, more than 99% of furfural was adsorbed in BFA packed bed at experimental conditions.

The main aim of this study was to investigate the potential of wood charcoal on removing furan compounds (5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF), furfural) known as fermentation inhibitors in sugar hydrolysates obtained from supercritical water treatment of lignocellulosic biomass. For this aim, model hydrolysate was prepared, and removal rates of sugars or furan compounds depending on wood charcoal concentration and treatment time were calculated and analyzed in comparison with the case of activated carbon. 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 8, or 12% (w/v) of wood charcoal or activated carbon was loaded into the model hydrolysate, containing glucose, xylose, 5-HMF, and furfural, and treatment was conducted for 1, 3, 6, 12, or 24 h. After treatment, removal rates of 5-HMF and furfural gradually increased as wood charcoal concentration or treatment time increased, and over 95% of 5-HMF and furfural were removed at 8% of wood charcoal concentration and 3 h of treatment time, while the loss of sugars (< 2%) was hardly observed. On the other hand, in the case of activated carbon treatment, removal rates of 5-HMF and furfural were over 95% at mild condition (activated carbon concentration: 8%, treatment time: 1 h), but over 10% of glucose and xylose were removed. Therefore, considering sugar production and further process applied sugar, the wood charcoal treatment of sugar hydrolysate was more effective for removing furan compounds and maintaining the sugar yield.

Ten commercial activated carbons (ACs) prepared from four different sources (bamboo, wood, peat, and coal) were evaluated for their adsorptive efficiency of six volatile compounds (isoamyl alcohol, hexanal, furfural, ethyl lactate, ethyl octanoate, 2-phenyl ethanol) which were dissolved in a 30% alcoholic model solution. These six volatile compounds are frequently found in alcoholic beverages and possibly contribute to physiological hangover due to their high concentrations. They are also generally regarded as off-flavor compounds at certain levels in alcoholic beverages such as whisky and vodka. Two hundred mL of 30% alcoholic solutions containing these six volatile compounds were treated with 0.2 g of ACs while stirring for 16 hr; the treated solutions were then measured for their adsorptive efficiencies (or removal efficiencies) by gas chromatographic analysis using two different sampling methods (direct liquid injection and headspace-solid phase microextraction). The adsorptive efficiencies of the ACs varied depending on the identity of the volatile compounds and the source material used for making the ACs. Ethyl octanoate, 2-phenyl ethanol, and hexanal were removed at high efficiencies (34-100%), whereas isoamyl alcohol, ethyl lactate, and furfural were removed at low efficiencies (5-13%). AC prepared from bamboo showed a high removal efficiency for isoamyl alcohol, aldehydes (hexanal and furfural), and 2-phenyl ethanol; these major fusel oils have been implicated as congeners responsible for alcohol hangover.

The life of power transformer is basically dependent on the aging deterioration of insulating paper. Analysis of insulating paper for its DP value or tensile strength requires removal of a few strips of paper but direct measurement of this properties is not practical for in-service transformers. For this reason furfural analysis by HPLC has gained increasing favor as a means of estimating degradation of insulating papers in power transformers and this paper reports on the analysis of data on the concentration of furfural in oil samples from about 50 power transformers and the case study. The data showed that furfural content can estimate more accurately aging characteristics compared to concentration of CO, $CO_2$. We expect that these results can be useful to predict the aging characteristics and life diagnosis of power transformers and further the study must be continued.

The ratio of saccharification and formation of furans during the acid hydrolysis of agar with oxalic acid and sulfuric acid were examined base on the contents of the agar and acids. The ratio of saccharification in oxalic acid appeared to be 51~59% somewhat higher than 49~61% of sulfuric acid. Formation of the furans during the acid hydrolysis increased proportional to the contents of agar and acid. The relative formation ratio was high 10~47% for furfural (FUR) and 15~29% for hydroxy-methyl furfural (HMF) in 0.5~1.25% sulfuric acid rather than those of oxalic acid. When comparing the removal efficiency of the furans using an alkali treatment, steam stripping and hydrophobic resins, FUR was eliminated 60% by the alkali treatment, 62~90% by steam stripping and 71~75% by Amberlite XAD4 and 7HP, while HMF was removed to low levels of 10.5%, 4~17% and 13~25%, respectively. The loss of reducing sugar was also observed in process of the removal of furans, and the loss rate was the level of 2~4% in alkali treatment, 11~16% in steam stripping and 7~9% in Amberlite resins.
In this study, the detoxification methods were evaluated for the removal of fermentation inhibitors from synthetic solution containing the composition similar to the lignocellulosic hydrolysate. The enzyme peroxidase and laccase were used as a biological treatment method. The physico-chemical methods such as adsorption and ion exchange were applied by using activated charcoal and ion exchange resins. The enzyme peroxidase showed a excellent removal of phenolic compounds. The 5-HMF and furfural were completely removed by activated charcoal. The anion exchange resin showed a good result for detoxification of acetic acid. The activated charcoal and ion exchange resins lead to a loss of sugars more or less. The choice of detoxification method must be made after considering the composition and inhibitors in hydrolysates.
The selective removal and recovery of fermentation inhibitors during purification of sugars from biomass hydrolysates can increase the economic efficiency of the entire process to produce bioalcohol from lignocellulosic biomass. This study investigated the effect of furans in phenols-free biomass hydrolysate on acetic acid extraction in an emulsion liquid membrane system. Under specific operating conditions, more than 99% of acetic acid could be extracted within 5 minutes, and the degrees of extraction of furfural and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural were about 10% and 4%, respectively. The extraction rate of acetic acid was also lower at a higher initial concentration of furfural in the feed phase, which was greater for furfural than 5-hydroxymethylfurfural. Thus, if furfural is first removed from the hydrolysate prior to acetic acid extraction, emulsion liquid membrane would be a more economically efficient way of removing acetic acid.
In this study, ethanol was produced from a biomass hydrolysate that had been treated by electrodialysis (ED) and Amberlite XAD resin to remove fermentation inhibitors. Most of the acetic acid (95.6%) was removed during the ED process. Non-ionizable compounds such as total phenolic compounds, 5-hydroxymethyl furfural, and furfural were effectively removed by the XAD resin treatment. Ethanol production was improved when the ED-treated hydrolysate was treated with XAD-4 resin for a short reaction time. The highest ethanol production from ED-treated hydrolysate was $6.16g/{\ell}$ (after 72 h of fermentation) when the treatment with XAD-4 resin was for 5 min. Among the lignin-derived fermentation inhibitors tested, syringaldehyde in low concentrations (1 and 2 mM) in the hydrolysate increased ethanol production, whereas a high concentration (5 mM) inhibited the ethanol production process. A synthetic medium containing syringaldehyde and ferulic acid was prepared to investigate the synergistic effect of inhibitors on ethanol fermentation. Ethanol production decreased in the mixture of 1 mM syringaldehyde and 1 mM ferulic acid, implying that the effect of ferulic acid on ethanol fermentation is comparable to that of syringaldehyde.
Biological conversion of biomass into fuels and chemicals requires hydrolysis of the polysaccharide fraction into monomeric sugars. Hydrolysis can be performed enzymatically, and with dilute or concentrate mineral acids. In this study, dilute sulfuric acid used as a catalyst for the hydrolysis of rapeseed straw. The purpose of this study is to optimize the hydrolysis process in a 15ml bomb tube reactor and investigate the effects of the acid concentration, temperature and reaction time on the hemicellulose removal and consequently on the production of sugars (xylose, glucose and arabinose) as well as on the formation of by-products (furfural, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural and acetic acid). Statistical analysis was based on a model composition corresponding to a $3^3$ orthogonal factorial design and employed the response surface methodology (RSM) to optimize the hydrolysis conditions, aiming to attain maximum xylose extraction from hemicellulose of rapeseed straw. The obtained optimum conditions were: acid concentration of 0.77%, temperature of $164^{\circ}C$ with a reaction time of 18min. Under these conditions, 75.94% of the total xylose was removed and the hydrolysate contained 0.65g $L^{-1}$ Glucose, 0.36g $L^{-1}$ Arabinose, 3.59g $L^{-1}$ Xylose, 0.51g $L^{-1}$ Furfural, 1.36g $L^{-1}$ Acetic acid, and 0.08g $L^{-1}$ 5-hydroxymethylfurfural.
Hemicellulosic hydrolysates contain not only sugars but also several kinds of ethanol fermentation inhibitory substances such as carboxylic acids, furans and phenolic compounds. In this work, emulsion liquid membrane (ELM) was chosen as a separation technology to remove the inhibitors. A basic simulated hemicellulosic hydrolysate was composed of xylose as sugar, dilute sulfuric acid solution as solvent, and acetic acid as carboxylic acid, and furfural as furan derivative or p-hydroxybenzoic acid(HBA) as phenolic compound was added to the hydrolysate when necessary. Acetic acid and HBA as weak acid could be selectively removed from the hydrolysates in all the ELM systems considered here, but furfural as aldehyde was quite hard to remove. Also, when HBA was added to the basic simulated hemicellulosic hydrolysate, both of acetic acid and HBA in the feed phase could be selectively removed up to 99% in an ELM system with tributyl phosphate as extractant.
