  • The use of subcritical aqueous homogenous reactors driven by accelerators presents an attractive alternative for producing $^{99}Mo$. In this method, the medical isotope production system itself is used to extract $^{99}Mo$ or other radioisotopes so that there is no need to irradiate common targets. In addition, it can operate at much lower power compared to a traditional reactor to produce the same amount of $^{99}Mo$ by irradiating targets. In this study, the neutronic performance and $^{99}Mo$, $^{89}Sr$, and $^{131}I$ production capacity of a subcritical aqueous homogenous reactor fueled with low-enriched uranyl nitrate was evaluated using the MCNPX code. A proton accelerator with a maximum 30-MeV accelerating power was used to run the subcritical core. The computational results indicate a good potential for the modeled system to produce the radioisotopes under completely safe conditions because of the high negative reactivity coefficients of the modeled core. The results show that application of an optimized beam window material can increase the fission power of the aqueous nitrate fuel up to 80%. This accelerator-based procedure using low enriched uranium nitrate fuel to produce radioisotopes presents a potentially competitive alternative in comparison with the reactor-based or other accelerator-based methods. This system produces ~1,500 Ci/wk (~325 6-day Ci) of $^{99}Mo$ at the end of a cycle.

  • In the present work, we selected a polymer, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), as an additive to improve the hydrogenation and dehydrogenation properties of Mg. 95 wt% Mg + 5 wt% PVDF (designated Mg-5PVDF) samples were prepared via milling in hydrogen atmosphere (reactive milling), and the hydrogenation and dehydrogenation characteristics of the prepared samples were compared with those of Mg milled in hydrogen atmosphere. The dehydrogenation of magnesium hydride formed in the as-prepared Mg-5PVDF during reactive milling began at 681 K. In the fourth cycle (n=4), the initial hydrogenation rate was 0.75 wt% H/min and the quantity of hydrogen absorbed for 60 min, $H_a$ (60 min), was 3.57 wt% H at 573 K and in 12 bar $H_2$. It is believed that after reactive milling the PVDF became amorphous. The milling of Mg with the PVDF in hydrogen atmosphere is believed to have produced defects and cracks. The fabrication of defects is thought to ease nucleation. The fabrication of cracks is thought to expose fresh surfaces, resulting in an increase in the reactivity of the particles with hydrogen and a decrease in the diffusion distances of hydrogen atoms. As far as we know, this investigation is the first in which a polymer PVDF was added to Mg by reactive milling to improve the hydrogenation and dehydrogenation characteristics of Mg.

  • In order to separate the fuel-grade DME from the product of a direct DME synthesise reaction, containing 19~20% of DME, an absorption column and a purification column were employed. In the DME absorption column, the flow rate of the methanol required to recover more than 99% of DME at 50 bar was estimated by the correlation obtained from the lab-scale experiments. In the DME purification column, the maximum DME recovery of 98.2% could be obtained even from the side stream at the 3rd stage above the feed stage, since the feed stream originated from the product of the absorption column had already contained a large amount of DME (20~30 mol%) and only a small amount of light products such as $CO_2$ and $N_2$ (5~10 mol%).

  • The risk of climate change has been long acknowledged, and ongoing efforts to overcome this issue, within the shipping sector, with the international maritime organization playing a central role. Conducting research on characteristics of soot formation is crucial to control its occurrence within the combustion process. In this study, the laser extinction method and chemical reaction numerical analysis were employed to examine the alterations in the state of chemical species associated with flame temperature, flame visual, and soot formation by mixing nitrogen, an inert gas, in the counterflow diffusion flame based on ethylene gas. The findings of the study suggest that as the mixing ratio of nitrogen increased, both the flame temperature and soot volume fraction decreased. Additionally, the area in which soot particles were distributed also decreased, and the volume fraction decrease rate declined when the mixing ratio increased by more than 30%. The mole fraction of the chemical species involved in soot growth also decreased. the chemical species associated with the HACA reaction were affected by variations in the hydrocarbon fuel ratio, and the chemical species related to the odd carbon path were confirmed to be affected by the flame temperature as well as the hydrocarbon fuel ratio.

  • The objective of this study was to extensively estimate the air quality trends of the study area by surveying con-centration trends in months or seasons, after analyzing the mass concentration of PM-10 samples and the inorganic lements, ion, and total carbon in PM-10. Also, the study introduced to apply the PMF (Positive Matrix Factoriza-tion) model that is useful when absence of the source profile. Thus the model was thought to be suitable in Korea that often has few information about pollution sources. After obtaining results from the PMF modeling, the existing sources at the study area were qualitatively identified The PM-10 particles collected on quartz fiber filters by a PM-10 high-vol air sampler for 3 years (Mar. 1999∼Dec.2001) in Kyung Hee University. The 25 chemical species (Al, Mn, Ti, V, Cr, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Se, Cd, Ba, Ce, Pb, Si, N $a^{#}$, N $H_4$$^{+}$, $K^{+}$, $Mg^{2+}$, $Ca^{2+}$, C $l^{[-10]}$ , N $O_3$$^{[-10]}$ , S $O_4$$^{2-}$, TC) were analyzed by ICP-AES, IC, and EA after executing proper pre - treatments of each sample filter. The PMF model was intensively applied to estimate the quantitative contribution of air pollution sources based on the chemical information (128 samples and 25 chemical species). Through a case study of the PMF modeling for the PM-10 aerosols. the total of 11 factors were determined. The multiple linear regression analysis between the observed PM-10 mass concentration and the estimated G matrix had been performed following the FPEAK test. Finally the regression analysis provided source profiles (scaled F matrix). So, 11 sources were qualitatively identified, such as secondary aerosol related source, soil related source, waste incineration source, field burning source, fossil fuel combustion source, industry related source, motor vehicle source, oil/coal combustion source, non-ferrous metal source, and aged sea- salt source, respectively.ively.y.

  • Annual ring formation is considered a source of information to investigate the effects of environmental changes caused by temperature, air pollution, and acid rain on tree growth. A comparative investigation of annual ring growth of Cryptomeria japonica in relation to environmental changes was conducted at two sites in southern Korea (Haenam and Jangseong). Three wood disks from each site were collected from stems at breast height and annual ring growth was analyzed. Annual ring area at two sites increased over time (p > 0.05). Tree ring growth rate in Jangseong was higher than that in Haenam. Annual ring area increment in Jangseong was more strongly correlated with environmental variables than that in Haenam; annual ring growth increased with increasing temperature (p < 0.01) and a positive effect of $NO_2$ concentration on annual ring area (p < 0.05) could be attributed to nitrogen deposition in Jangseong. The correlation of annual ring growth increased with decreasing $SO_2$ and $CO_2$ concentrations (p < 0.01) in Jangseong. Variation in annual growth rings in Jangseong could be associated with temperature changes and N deposition. In Haenam, annual ring growth was correlated with $SO_2$ concentration (p < 0.01), and there was a negative relationship between precipitation pH and annual ring area (p < 0.01) which may reflect changes in nutrient cycles due to the acid rain. Therefore, the combined effects of increased $CO_2$, N deposition, and temperature on tree ring growth in Jangseong may be linked to soil acidification in this forest ecosystem. The interactions between air pollution ($SO_2$) and precipitation pH in Haenam may affect tree growth and may change nutrient cycles in this site. These results suggested that annual tree ring growth in Jangseong was more correlated with environmental variables than that in Haenam. However, the further growth of C. japonica forest at two sites is at risk from the long-term effects of acid deposition from fossil fuel combustion.

  • The objective of vehicle aerodynamic design is on the fuel economy, reduction of the harmful emission, minimizing the vibration and noise and the driving stability of the vehicle. Especially for a sedan, the driving stability of the vehicle is the main concern of the aerodynamic design of the vehicle indeed. In this theoretical study, an evaluation algorithm of aerodynamic driving stability of a vehicle was made to estimate the dynamic stability of a vehicle at the given driving condition on a road. For the stability evaluation of a driving vehicle, CFD simulation was conducted to have the rolling, pitching and yawing moments of a model vehicle and compared the values of the moments to the resistance moments. From the case study, it is found that a model sedan running at 100 km/h in speed on a straight level road is stable under the side wind with 45 m/s in speed. But the different results may be obtained on the buses and trucks because those vehicles have the wide side area. From the case study of the model vehicle moving on 100 km/h speed with 15 m/s side wind is evaluated using the numerical algorithm drawn from the study, the value of yawing moment is $608.6N{\cdot}m$, rolling moment $-641N{\cdot}m$ and pitching moment $3.9N{\cdot}m$. These values are smaller than each value of rotational resistance moment the model vehicle has, and therefore, the model vehicle's driving stability is guaranteed when driving 100 km/h with 15 m/s side wind.

  • Numerical simulations of freely propagating flames burning stoichiometric CH$_4$/O$_2$/$N_2$mixtures are performed at atmospheric pressure in order to understand the effect of the $O_2$enrichment level on CH$_4$/Air flame. A chemical kinetic mechanism is employed, the adopted scheme involving 54 gas-phase species and 632 forward reactions. The calculated flame speeds are compared with the experiments for the flames established at several $O_2$enrichment level, the results of which is in excellent agreement. As a result of the increased $O_2$enrichment level from 0.21 to 1, the mole fraction of CO in the burred gas is increased. The flame speed and the temperature in the burned gas are also increased, but the thickness of the flame is severely shrunken in the preheat region. The maximum of the calculated EINO is obtained around 0.6 and 0.7 of the $O_2$enrichment level in cases of flames for fuel-lean mixtures.

  • Tractor performance was analyzed using the data from 226 Korean-made and 107 imported tractors tested at the National Institute of Agricultural Engineering for the 25-year period from 1980 through 2004. The performance analysis included the specific volumetric fuel consumption (svfc), power per unit weight and traction coefficient evaluated from the viewpoint of PTO power level. No significant performance improvement has been made for the Korean-made tractors over the last 25 years. The average svfc for the maximum PTO power has increased by only $2.1\%$ from 1980 to 2004, resulting in 2.86 kW${\cdot}$h/L in 2004. The average maximum PTO and drawbar power per unit weight of ballasted tractors were 1.38 and 1.19 kW/kN in 2000-2004, indicating $14.0\%$ and $5.9\%$ decreases respectively from 1980 to 2004. The traction coefficient has increased by $23.1\%$ over the 25 years, resulting in 0.68 in the 2000-2004 period. Poor performance improvement was also observed from the imported tractors. In the 2000-2004 period, average svfc for the maximum PTO power, PTO power per unit ballasted weight, drawbar power per unit ballasted weight and traction coefficient of the imported tractors were respectively 3.0 kW${\cdot}$h/L, 1.34 kW/kN, 1.13 kW/kN and 0.68. PTO and drawbar power per unit weight were lower in imported tractors than the Korean-made tractors. Comparing the test results with those of tractors less than 37 kW tested at the Nebraska Tractor Test Laboratory from 1981 to 2002, the Korean-made tractors have exhibited better performance in terms of power per unit weight. However, poor performance in the svfc and traction coefficient was observed. The average svfc and traction coefficient of the Korean-made tractors were respectively $86.4\%$ and $83.7\%$ of the tractors tested at the NTTL over the same period.
