Orthotropic laminates, such as [$0^{\circ}6$/$90^{\circ}6$]s and [$90^{\circ}6$/$0^{\circ}6$]s, were performed, using a commercial nonlinear finite element method. Interlaminar stress distributions, around the hole curve free-edge, were calculated. The delamination bearing strengths of pin joints were predicted, using the modified delamination failure criterion. These stress distributions were presented along the radial lines and around the free-edge of the hole. Further, three-dimensional non-linear contact analysis of orthotropic laminates was conducted to investigate the effect of friction. In this paper, laminates with a circular hole were taken to study interlaminar stresses the curved edge. This study may assist in the design of a thick composite laminate with mechanically pin joints.

The effect of cutted pin in front of pin-fin array was analyzed for increasing the cooling performance of gas turbine blade. The numerical simulations were conducted to figure out the flow and thermal characteristics. The base case which is staggered pin-fin array, cut pin case 1 which has X2/Dp=1.25 cut pin and cut pin case 2 which has X3/Dp=1.75 cut pin were compared. The results showed that cut pin increases the strength of the horseshoe vortex which occurred at the leading edge of pin-fin array. Furthermore, the wake effect is reduced at the trailing edge of pin-fin array. As a result, the heat transfer distribution on the endwall increases. However, the friction factor increases owing to the installation of cut pin, but the thermal performance factor is increased maximum 23.8% in cut pin case 2. Therefore, installation of cut pin will be helpful for increasing the cooling performance of pin-fin array of gas turbine blade.
Wear and scuffing tests were conducted using friction and wear measurement of piston rings and cylinder blocks in low friction diesel engine. The frictional forces, wear amounts and cycles to scuffing in boundary lubricated sliding condition were measured using the reciprocating wear tester. The cylinder blocks were used as reciprocating specimens, and the piston rings with several coatings were used as fixed pin. Several coatings were used such as DLC, TiN, Cr-ceramic and TiAlN in order to improve the tribological characteristics. From the tests wear volume of piston ring surfaces applied various coatings were compared. During the tests coefficients of friction were monitored. Test results showed that DLC coatings showed good tribological properties. TiN and Cr-ceramic coated rings showed good wear resistance properties but produced high friction.
The wear behavior of epoxy matrix composites filled with nano sized silica particles is discussed in this paper. Especially, the variation of the coefficient of friction and the wear resistance according to the change of apply load and sliding velocity were investigated for these materials. Wear tests of pin-on-disc mode were carried out and the wear test results exhibited as following ; The epoxy matrix composites showed lower coefficient of friction compared to the neat epoxy through the whole sliding distance. As increasing the sliding velocity the epoxy matrix composites indicated lower coefficient of friction, whereas the neat epoxy showed higher coefficient of friction as increasing the sliding velocity. The specific friction work of both materials were increased with apply load. In case of the epoxy matrix composites, the running in periods of friction were reduced as increase in apply load. The epoxy matrix composites were improved the wear resistance by adding the nano silica particles remarkably. It is expected that the load carrying capacity of the epoxy matrix composites will be improved by increase of Pv factor.

This paper shows the behaviors of macro- and micro-structures and mechanical properties for specimen's welding region welded by FSW. according to welding conditions with 5mm thickness aluminum 5083O alloy plate. It apparently results in defect-free weld zone in case traverse speed was changed to 32 mm/min under conditions of anti-clockwise direction and tool rotation speed such as 800 and 1250 rpm with tool's pin diameter of 5 ${\Phi}mm$ and shoulder diameter of 20 ${\Phi}mm$, pin length of 4.5 mm and tilting angle of $2^{\circ}$. The ultimate stress of ${\sigma}_T=331$ MPa and the yield point of 147 MPa are obtained at the condition of the travel speed of 32 mm/min with the tool rotation speed of 1250 rpm. There is neither voids nor cracks on bended surface of $180^{\circ}$ after bending test. The improvement of toughness after impact test was found. The lower rotating and traverse speed became, the higher were yield point, maximum stress and elongation(%) with the stresses and the elongation(%) versus the traverse speed diagram. Vickers hardness for cross section of welding zone were also presented. The typical macro-structures such as dynamically recrystallized zone, thermo-mechanically affected zone and heat affected zone and the micro-structures of the transverse cross-section were also showed. However, the author found out that the region of 6mm far away from shoulder circumference was affected by friction heat comprehensively, that is, hardness softened and that part of micro-structures were re-solid-solution or recrystallized, the author also knew that there is no mechanically deformation on heat affected zone but there are the flow of plastic deformation of $45^{\circ}$ direction on thermo-mechanically affected zone and the segregation of Al-Mg on nugget. The solid solution wt(%) of parent material as compared against of friction stir welded zone was comprehensively changed.

Copper sheets has been used widely in electric and electron industry fields because they have good electric and heat conduction property of the material. And, in order to bond copper material, a kind of soldering process is generally used. But, because it is difficult to bond by soldering between overlapped thin copper sheets, so, another kind of brazing bonding process can be used in that case. But, because the brazing process needs wide bonding area, it needs heat treatment process in electric furnace. Generally, for spot welding of sheets, a conventional electric Resistance Spot Welding process(RSW) has been used, it has welding characteristics using contact resistance heating induced by electric current flow between sheets. But, because copper sheets has the low electric resistance, it is difficult to weld by electric resistance spot welding. So, in this study, an electric Resistance heated Surface Friction Spot Welding process(RSFSW) is suggested and is testified for the spot welding ability of thin copper sheets. It is known from the experimental results and simulation that the suggested spot welding process will be able to improve the spot welding ability of copper sheets by the combined three kinds of heating generated by surface friction by rotating pin, and conducted from heated steel electrode, and generated by contact resistance of electricity.
Because the running speed of vehicles is increasing and a shorter braking distance is required, high heat-resistant brake pads are needed to satisfy the requirements of customers and car makers. In the near future, hazardous materials such as Cu, Cr, Zn, and Sb will be restricted from use in friction materials. Ceramic composites reinforced by carbon fibers are good candidates for eco-friendly friction materials. In this study, we develop ceramic composite friction materials. The friction materials are composed of carbon fibers, Si, SiC, graphite, and phenol resin and are prepared by hot forming and heat treatment at high temperatures. The density, void ratio, and compressive strength are $1.59-1.66g/cm^3$, 16.6-20, and 70-90 MPa, respectively. Friction and wear tests are performed using a pin-on-plate-type reciprocating friction tester at 25, 100, and $200^{\circ}C$. The counterpart material is a CrMoV steel extracted from a KTX brake disc. Friction coefficient, wear amount, and wear mechanism are measured and examined. We determine that the friction coefficients depend on the temperature and the fluctuation of the friction coefficients is larger at higher temperatures. The amount of wear increases with the surface temperatures of the specimens. The tribological properties of the developed composites are similar to those of a Cu-based sintered friction material. Through this study, it is confirmed that ceramic composite materials can be used as friction materials.
The tribological properties of paper-based friction materials are crucial to the performance of a wet clutch system. In this work, the friction and wear characteristics of a paper-based friction material in boundary lubrication state was experimentally investigated using a pin-on-reciprocating tribotester under various normal forces and temperatures. It was found that the wear rate of the friction material increased from $5.8{\times}10^{-6}mm^3/N/cycle$ to $5.5{\times}10^{-5}mm^3/N/cycle$ after 1,700 cycles of testing at $80^{\circ}C$ as normal force increased from 2 N to 7 N. The friction coefficient was also found to increase from 0.135 to 0.155 with increasing normal force from 2 N to 7 N. The increase in contact pressure with increasing normal force may be responsible for these results. In addition, as temperature increased from $20^{\circ}C$ to $80^{\circ}C$, the wear rate of the friction materials increased from $2.0{\times}10^{-5}mm^3/N/cycle$ to $3.6{\times}10^{-5}mm^3/N/cycle$ while the friction coefficient decreased from 0.163 to 0.146. This result may be associated with the decrease in the hardness of friction materials with increasing temperature. Furthermore, plastic deformation on the friction materials was mainly observed after the test. The outcome of this work may be useful to gain a better understanding of the tribological properties of friction materials, and therefore can contribute to the development of friction materials with enhanced performance for wet clutch systems.
