The objective of this study is to evaluate the use of RADARSAT and Landsat TM data for the monitoring of rice growth. The relationships between backscatter coefficients($\sigma$$^{0}$ ) of RADARSAT data and digital numbers (DN) of Landsat TM and rice growth parameters were investigated. Radar backscatter coefficients were calculated by calibration process and then compared with rice growth parameters; plant height, leaf area index (LAI), and fresh and dry biomass. When radar backscatter coefficient ($\sigma$$^{0}$ ) of rice was expressed as a function of time, it is shown that the increasing trend ranged from -22--20dB to -9--8dB as growth advances. The temporal variation of backscatter coefficient was significant to interpret rice growth. According to the relationship between leaf area index and backscatter coefficient, backscatter coefficient underestimated leaf area index at the beginning of life history and overestimated, at the reproductive stage. The same increasing trend between biomass and backscatter coefficient was shown. From these results, RADARSAT data appear positive to the monitoring of rice growth. Each band of time-series Landsat TM data had a significant trend as a rice crop grows during its life cycle. Spectral indices, NDVI[(TM4-TM3)/(TM4+TM3)] and RVI(TM4/TM2), derived from Landsat TM equivalent bands had the same trend as leaf area index.
1. Chemical components of fresh tobacco leaves at topping stages were affected variously by fertilizer application level. The more fertilizers were applicated, the higher nitrogen content of leaves was shown regardless of the soil fertility, but phosphorus content was not affected either by phosphorus rate or soil fertility. Potassium content was higher in the leaves grown in fertile soil than infertile at the same application rate. 2. Maturation of tobacco leaves was delayed by applying high level of nitrogen fertilizer, especially in fertile soil. The excessive accumulation of nitrogen in tobacco leaves at later stage of growth resulted in poor quality index for the high content of nicotine and low content of reducing sugar in cured leaves. 3. Nicotine content of cured leaf was increased significantly as nitrogen content increased, regardless of soil fertility, but reducing sugar content was reduced. Nicotine and reducing sugar content of cured leaf were higher in fertile than in infertile soil. 4. Resulting from the facts that nicotine contents were negatively correlated and reducing sugar contents were positively correlated with grading value (Won/Kg), authors suggested that grading index (Won/Kg) of the Office of Monopoly be based on quality index from chemical components of cured leaves.
In order to evaluate the utility of bituminous coal fly ash, gypsum, oyster shell as soil amendments, aadic clayloam paddy soils with low calaum content were amended in the upper 15㎝ with amendments, and then Chinese cabbage was cultivated under plastic film house. Amendments treated were, in metric tons per hectare, i) none(Check) ; ii) 80 fly ash(FA) ; iii) 4 shell(SH) ; iv) 56 fly ash+24 gypsum (FG) ; v) 40 fly ash+24 gypsum+0.8 shell(FGS). On the whole, soil chemical properties were improved by amendments treatments. Amongst treatments, FA prominently neutralized soil pH and increased contents of Av. $P_2O_5$, Ex. K, and Av. B in soils. Besides, it showed the highest ratio in bacteria/fungi and (bacteria+actinomycetes)/fungi. FGS also affected the neutralization of soil pH and the increment of Ex. Mg. Amendments plants appeared alkaline damages only at early growing stage, but showed positive responses in fresh weight yields : 23% for FGS : 21% for FG : 19 18% for SH. At harvesting, leaves both of FA and FGS plants had higher values in contents of N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, Zn, B, reduang-sugar, and vitamin-C than of others. In especial, Check plants appeared the heart rot symptoms owing to calaum defiaency differently from amendments plants. Taken together, FGS was an effective combination enable to maximize the utility of fly ash, gypsum, shell as soil amendments, espeaally in cabbage yield and quality.
This experiment was conducted to determine the effects of cutting height on the yield and nutritive value of brittle culm rice. A brittle culm cultivar, KL501, was compared with a non-brittle culm rice, Seomjinbyeo. The cultivars were grown in paddy until flowering stage at which the first cutting was made followed by the second cutting on October 20. Cutting regime conducted were 0, 5, 10 and 20cm from the surface. Herbage yield, TDN and other nutritive values were measured. As the higher cutting height, crude protein, fat and NFE (nitrogen free extract) contents were increased and crude fiber and ash content were decreased at the first cutting, while those at second cutting were increased except NFE content. Fresh and dry matter yield at 10cm cutting height, Seomjinbyeo was 4.45 and 1.16t /ha, KL501 was 4.71 and 1.14t /ha, respectively. TDN content of first cutting was increased as the higher cutting height, but that of second cutting was decreased. TDN yields of Seomjinbyeo and KL501 at 10cm cutting height were highest by showing 0.63t /ha and 0.61t /ha, respectively.

A new oil crop chufa(Cyperus esculentus var. sativus) was studied to evaluate the yield potential of tuber and productivity of leaf as a new forage crop resources. Response to nitrogen fertilizer was not clear, showing low yield over 10kg/l0a of nitrogen application. Tuber yield was higher at 50cm $\times$ 15cm and 50cm$\times$20cm of planting population of tuber. Planting at early May showed high tuber yield, and sprouting tuber planting could not increased the tuber yield. The plant height of Chufa is 126cm, and the number of tiller per $\m^2$ are 671. It is moderate to lodging, but susceptable according to the amount of field products. Fresh forage and dry matter yield of above ground of chufa were 2,135kg/10a, and 590kg/l0a, respectively. The contents of crude protein, ether extract, fiber, ash, and acid detergent fiber are 24.8%, 8.1%, 38%, 64.4%, 52.8%, and 55.9%, respectively. It was considered that the nutritive value of chufa leaf in maturing stage was so good as rice straw.

Experiments were conducted to select the optimum cultivars which are adaptable to South Korea through estimating the differences in daughter plant production and growth response among seven strawberry cultivars. In the vegetative stage, Nyoho, Akihime and Suhong produced more daughter plants than other cultivars whereas Akaneko and Tochinomine, which developed less runners, showed better condition in runner vigorness. The quality of daughter plants derived from forcing cultivars was uniform in general. Even though there was no significant differences in rooting among cultivars, runners from Akaneko and Tochinomine developed more roots and fresh weight of roots than other cultivars. In the forcing cultivars, Akihime showed the most excellent plant vigorness, yield and highest sugar content of fruits and also was 5 days faster than Nyoho in flowering date. However, the fruit tended to be softened. In the semi-forcing cultivars, Tochinomine was excellent in vigorness, firmness, sugar content of fruits and the average of fruit weight but low in flower numbers per cluster and late in the emergency of second flower cluster. Although Akaneko showed highest in sugar/acid ratio and rich in flavour, lighting treatment was recommended to this cultivar for early harvest because of softness of fruits.
There are a lot of kinds of shrimps for fishing baits, but Palaemon modestus is dominant species in the Karak River. The ecology in the natural environments was reported by the author (1970) and this work is an elemental task for the larval stage in shrimp farms. Shrimps were collected from the Karak River and carried to the laboratory. Hatched larvae were reared from June 6 to June 24, 1970 for pre-experiment, and main experiment was provided from August 10 to August 24, 1970. The following is a summary of the results: 1. Hatching period in the laboratory water tank was eight hours ($20^{\circ}C\~20.9^{\circ}C$). 2. The larvae died off from the sixth day after hatch without food. 3. Feeding begins on the third day after hatch. 4. The relationship between the density of food and the consumption was not concerned when the number of Artemia nauplii was 2 to 6 per ml of water. 5. The relationship between the day (X) and the food (Y) is: $$Y=6.49824X^{1.8384}$$ 6. The carapace growth curve is: $Y=1.1608X^{0.10024}$ 7. The relationship between the food (X) and the body length (Y) is: $$Y=2.8114X^{0.12767}$$ 8. The relationship between the carapace length and the body length(Y) is : Y= 3.7564X-0.4601
No freshness indicator for fish has yet been established. Thus, we investigated changes over time in mackerel quality in an effort to development useful indicators. Fresh whole mackerel Scomber japonicus were stored at $4^{\circ}C$ immediately after capture and quality changes were evaluated every 3 days for a total of 15 days. Whole fish were divided into ventral parts (VPs) and dorsal parts (DPs); we measured the trimethylamine (TMA) and volatile basic nitrogen (VBN) levels, pH values, and color values in/of these parts. The TMA and VBN levels tended to increase during storage and the TMA changes in VPs were higher than those in DPs. In particular, the VP TMA content attained a maximum of 3.68 mg/100 g at 6 days, and the VBN content attained a maximum of 20.88 mg/100 g at 9 days, suggestive of initial fish spoilage. The pH ranged from 5.99-6.17 over the first 3 days and from 6.17-6.38 from days 6-15. Surface color changes on VPs and DPs were explored. Significant decreases in both VP lightness and yellowness were evident after 3 days. The data suggest that both TMA level and lightness of the color are valuable indicators of freshness in the initial stage of mackerel retail.
Ocean-air observation using an Automatic Weather Station (AWS) and Conductivity Temperature Depth (CTD) was conducted in the Mid-Yellow Sea off Korea during 8-10 July 2002. A water mass lower than 17$^{\circ}C$ around the Taean peninsula and a tidal front between 36$^{\circ}$20'N and 36$^{\circ}$30'N were observed. The horizontal distribution of air temperature was similar to that of sea surface temperature (SST). Hourly observation around Dukjuk island showed the cold and saline southwesterly and the warm and fresh northeasterly in phase with tidal current. Sea fogs two times formed at 2300 LST 8-0130 LST 9, and 0300-0600 LST 9 July 2002 during the observation period, respectively. During the initial stage of fogs, winds became northeasterly at the speed of 2-4m/s$^{-1}$, and air temperature dropped to 18$^{\circ}C$, as the North Pacific High weakened. The satellite image indicated that sea fogs formed over warm water in the western Yellow Sea and moved eastward toward the observation site, which could be called a steam fog. The fogs dissipated when wind speed and air temperature increased.

This study was designed to evaluate the influence of pronuclear age on the survival and post-thawing development after cryopreservation of mouse embryos. Freezing and thawing were performed in the different pronuclear stages of mouse embryos after IVF. Embryos were obtained from $F_1$ hybrid mice and classified into 4 groups according to the pronuclear stage (6hr, 9hr, 12hr and 15hr after insemination). Pronuclear ova were slowly cooled in a biological freezer using 1.5M 1,2-propanediol and 0.1M sucrose as cryoprotectant. Thawing was done at room temperature and 1,2-propanediol was removed by multi-step dilutions. Both frozen-thawed embryos and control fresh embryos were cultured in vitro in Ham's F-10 medium supplemented with 4mg/ml BSA. In control group, the development rate after 48hr was 99.3%, and the complete hatching rate after 144hr was 61.3%. In experimental groups, the survival rate after thawing was 95.4% in 6hr, 88.7% in 9hr, 75.2% in 12hr and 62.4% in 15hr after insemination, the development rate after 48hr was 61.1, 77.0, 67.0 and 79.6%, respectively, and the complete hatching rate after 144hr was 25.7, 43.7, 42.2 and 60.0%, respectively. The survival rate in 15hr was significantly lower (p<0.05) compared with other groups. In vitro development rates after 48hr were similar in all groups, but complement hatching rate was significantly lower (p<0.05) in 6hr group. In conclusion, cryopreservation of mouse pronuclear ova with 2 distinct pronuclei (9hr and 12hr groups) showed better results after thawing compared with early (6hr group) or late pronuclear ova just prior to cleavage (15hr group).
