  • This paper presents three dimensional structure of RF packages and the improvement effect of its electrical characteristics when implementing RF transceivers. We divided RF modules into several subunits following each subunit function based on the partitioning algorithm which suggests a method of three dimension stacking interconnection, PAA(pad area array) interconnection and stacking of three dimensional RF package structures. 224MHz ITS(Intelligent Transportation System) RF module subdivided into subunits of functional blocks of a receiver(RX), a transmitter(TX), a phase locked loop(PLL) and power(PWR) unit, simultaneously meeting the requirements of impedance characteristic and system stability. Each subfunctional unit has its own frequency region of 224MHz, 21.4MHz, and 450KHz~DC. The signal gain of receiver and transmitter unit showed 18.9㏈, 23.9㏈. PLL and PWR modules also provided stable phase locking, constant voltages which agree with design specifications and maximize their characteristics. The RF module of three dimension stacking structure showed $48cm^3$, 76.9% reduction in volume and 4.8cm, 28.4% in net length, 41.8$^{\circ}C$, 37% in maximum operating temperature, respectively. We have found that three dimensional PAA package structure is able to produce high speed, high density, low power characteristics and to improve its functional characteristics by subdividing RF modules according to the subunit function and the operating frequency, and the features of physical volume, electrical characteristics, and thermal conditions compared to two dimensional RF circuit modules.

  • This paper presents a new semi-analytical annular Mindlin plate element with which out-of-plane natural vibration of thick disks can be analyzed simply, efficiently, and accurately through FEM by including effects of rotary inertia and transverse shear deformation. Using static deformation modes which are exact solutions of equilibrium equations of annular Mindlin plate, the element interpolation functions, stiffness and mass matrices corresponding to each number of nodal diameters are derived. The element is capable of representing out-of-plane rigid-body motions exactly and free from shear locking. Natural frequencies of uniform and multi-step disks with or without concentric ring support are analyzed by applying the presented element. Such results are compared with theoretical predictions of previous works or FEA results obtained by using two-dimensional shell element to investigate the convergence and accuracy of the presented element.

  • The basic binary quantized first-order digital phase locked loop (DPLL) is modified in order to reduce the aquisition time and steadyftate phase error. Adding the loop that corrects the phase difference by detecting the falling zero-crossing time, an effort for the improving the performance is performed and the performance compared with that of the basic DPLL. Using a graphical method, the phase locking processes of the modified DPLL for a phase step and a frequency step input are depicted visually in the absence of noise. The performance of the modified DPLL for a sinusoidal input added narrow band random noise is evaluated using the Chapman-Kolmogorov equation. This approach is verified by direct computer simulation. The steady-state phase error and the average aquisition time of the modified DPLL are compared with those of the basic DPLL, It is shown that the aquisition time of the modified DPLL is shortened about twice, also, as signal to noise ratio increases, the effect of the modification increases and the steady-state phase error approaches to zero.

  • We demonstrate an S/S+band discretely tunable thulium doped fiber laser (TTDFL), anchored on a 50-㎓ ITU-T grid. Investigating the inversion analysis of the thulium doped fiber (TDF) in applying a dual wavelength (1.4 m and 1.5 m) pumping scheme, a laser whose tuning range covers most of the S/S+band has been obtained. Within the wide 3-㏈ bandwidth of 65.1 nm, the output power of the tunable laser exceeds 6.1 ㏈m with very flat spectral profile and the number of DWDM channels generated is as large as 178. If we increase the subsidiary pump power to 22 ㎽, the bandwidth is expanded up to 66.2 nm. By controlling the temperature of the fine grid filter, we have also shown that the frequency locking capability of the laser can be improved. The laser developed in this work is expected to be utilized as a practical optical source providing reference wavelengths in the S/S+band.

  • A reference spur suppressed PLL with two-symmetrical loops without changing the bandwidth which is optimized to suppress phase noise and reduce locking time has been designed. The principle of suppressing a reference signal spur is to stabilize the input voltage of voltage controlled oscillator (VCO). The proposed PLL consists of a phase-frequency detector(PFD) which has two outputs, two charge pumps(CP), two loop filters(LF), a divider and a VCO which has two inputs. Simulation results with $0.18{\mu}m$ CMOS process show that the reference spur is approximately suppressed to 1/2 of the reference spur in a conventional PLL. Even though there is a 5% process variation in the magnitude of R and C, the simulation result shows that the reference spur is still suppressed to 1/2 of the reference spur in a conventional PLL. The power consumption is 6.3mW at the power supply of 1.8V.

  • A proton therapy facility is under development at Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST). To meet the need for fast energy changes during treatments, a beamline control system (BCS) has been designed and implemented. The BCS coordinates and controls various beamline devices by adopting a distributed architecture divided into three layers: the client, server, and device layers. Among these, the design of the server layer is the key to realize fast energy changes. The server layer adopts the submodule programming paradigm and optimizes the data interface among modules, allowing the main workflow to be separated from the device workflow and data. Furthermore, this layer uses asynchronous, multithreaded, and thread-locking methods to improve the system's ability to operation efficiently and securely. Notably, to evaluate the changing energy status over time, a dynamic node update method is adopted, which can dynamically adjust the update frequency of variable nodes. This method not only meets the demand for fast updates on energy changes but also reduces the server's communication load in the steady state. This method is tested on a virtual platform, and the results are as expected.

  • Background and Objectives: Currently limited information is available on speech stimuli processing at the subcortical level in the recipients of cochlear implant (CI). Speech processing in the brainstem level is measured using speech-auditory brainstem response (S-ABR). The purpose of the present study was to measure the S-ABR components in the sound-field presentation in CI recipients, and compare with normal hearing (NH) children. Subjects and Methods: In this descriptive-analytical study, participants were divided in two groups: patients with CIs; and NH group. The CI group consisted of 20 prelingual hearing impairment children (mean age=8.90±0.79 years), with ipsilateral CIs (right side). The control group consisted of 20 healthy NH children, with comparable age and sex distribution. The S-ABR was evoked by the 40-ms synthesized /da/ syllable stimulus that was indicated in the sound-field presentation. Results: Sound-field S-ABR measured in the CI recipients indicated statistically significant delayed latencies, than in the NH group. In addition, these results demonstrated that the frequency following response peak amplitude was significantly higher in CI recipients, than in the NH counterparts (p<0.05). Finally, the neural phase locking were significantly lower in CI recipients (p<0.05). Conclusions: The findings of sound-field S-ABR demonstrated that CI recipients have neural encoding deficits in temporal and spectral domains at the brainstem level; therefore, the sound-field S-ABR can be considered an efficient clinical procedure to assess the speech process in CI recipients.

  • The second harmonic, wavelength is 397nm, of the continuous wave diode laser, whose maximum power is 35mW, was generated in $LiIO_3$ crystals in a ring enhancement cavity. 5mm- and 10mm-long crystals cut $43.21^{\circ}$ for optic axis were used in this experiment. Both surfaces of those were anti-reflection coated for 794nm. In case the crystal was inserted into the cavity, the condition of separation between two concave mirrors for the optimum mode matching was found. The conversion efficiency of second harmonic generation was increased by the resonant enhancement of pumping power in the ring enhancement cavity, and the frequency of diode laser was locked to that of the counter-propagation mode generated from the surface of crystal. When the pumping power was 28 mW, the infrared buildup factor was about 45 without the crystal, and 14 with the crystal due to the transmission loss of crystal. The maximum second harmonic powers of $1.5{\mu}W$ and $6.6{\mu}W$ were obtained, and corresponding conversion efficiencies were $(6.584{\pm}0.56){\times}10^{-3}$%, $2.6{\pm}0.21){\times}10%{-2}$% in 5mm- and 10mm-long $LiIO_3$, respectively.

  • The objective of this research was to compare the flushing effects using 1:1,000 diluted heparin or 0.9% normal saline in relation to needle gauge and frequency of IV medications. The comparative categories were clotting, duration of patency, and incidence of phlebitis. The design of research was a Nonequivalent Control group, Post test, Nonsynchrorized Design. The independent variable was 0.9% normal saline flushing the IV locks and the dependent variables were clotting, duration of patency, and incidence of phlebitis. Subjects were medical-surgical inpatients over 15 years old and with peripherally placed IVs who were hospitalized in a university medical center. Exclusion criteria included foreigners and those who were rejected for this research. The final sample for data analysis included 295 IV sites in 194 patients; 154 were in the saline group and 141 were in the heparin group. Subjects were assigned to have IV locks is flushed with 0.9% normal saline in the experimental group and to have IV lock flushed with 1:1,000 diluted heparin(100 units) in the control group. In order to increase reliability, the nurses who were assigned to the units involved in the study received an explanation on the standard method for locking an IV, recording method for observational data and criteria for the detection of phlebitis. Data were collected for a period of 2 weeks, from March 16, 2000 to March 29, 2000. Total duration of IV was defined the time of IV insertion to the time of discontinuation. Phlebitis was defined as the presence of the following : pain, swelling. erythema at the insertion site. Chi-square was used to determine the association between the degree of clotting, duration of patency, and incidence of phlebitis for the diluted heparin or the normal saline and needle gauge and frequency of IV medications. The results are summarized as follows : (a) There was difference in the degree of clotting between two groups($X^2=5.882$, p=.015). (b) There was no difference in the degree of duration of patency between two groups($X^2=2.439$, p=.295). (c) There was no difference in the incidence of phlebitis between two groups($X^2=0.190$, p=.663). (d) There was difference in the degree of clotting($X^2=6.209$, p=.013) and in the degree of duration of patency($X^2=6.978$, p=.031) according the needle guage between the two groups. (e) There was difference in the incidence of phlebitis($X^2=5.008$, p=.025) according to the frequencies of IV injection between two groups.
