Unsaturated Soil Properties of Compacted Soil at Sub-Zero Temperature (영하온도에서 다짐된 지반의 불포화 특성)

  • Recently, construction disasters in thawing season are increasing due to the ground collapse and it is related to the improper compaction during winter season. Compaction at sub-zero temperature reduces the compaction effect and the research of mechanical properties of thawed soil after winter compaction can be used as useful data to understand the behavior of the ground in the thawing season. On the other hand, the research interest in the unsaturated soil mechanics has been increasing in the field of the geotechnical engineering. Therefore, it is expected that the research of unsaturated characteristics under the compaction of sub-zero temperature and freezing & thawing condition provides information to the researchers in the related fields. Therefore, in this research, unsaturated soil-water characteristics test and unsaturated uniaxial compression test were conducted on the specimens compacted at sub-zero temperature and continuous freezing & thawing condition to investigate change of unsaturated characteristics and matric suction. Based on the test results, the change of matric suction and the decrease of strength and stiffness were observed with the freezing & thawing conditions. Especially in case of the weathered soil, the strength and matric suction were significantly reduced with lower temperature and more repetition of freezing & thawing cycles. This result implies that compaction of sub-zero temperature and freezing & thawing cycles will have a considerable influence on the stability of the ground.

Numerical analysis for deformation characteristics under the freezing and bursting of Al pipe (알루미늄 관의 동파 거동특성에 관한 수치적 연구)

  • Recently, aluminum pipes have been used instead of steel pipes for open and shut machines in vinyl housing because of its corrosion-resistance and light weight. In particular, the light weight is very useful for fitting and removal by human resources. On the other hand, an aluminum pipe is weak in winter because aluminum has a larger thermal expansion coefficient than steel. This study examined the freezing and bursting of aluminum pipes by numerical analysis. The mechanical-thermal deformation characteristics were analyzed under the condition of ice volumetric expansion in aluminum pipes reaching 50%. From numerical analysis, large stresses above the yield stress occurred in aluminum pipe after ice expanded in the net diameter immediately. In addition, the freezing and bursting of aluminum pipes was predicted around an ice volumetric expansion of 6 - 7% because the thickness of the aluminum pipe reached an aluminum elongation ratio of 17%. Therefore, it is recommended that aluminum pipes be sealed perfectly to prevent water flow in the pipe. These results suggest that it is very difficult to prevent freezing and bursting of aluminum pipes by water freezing in the pipe.

Experimental Study on behavior of the Lightweight Air-foamed Soil Considering Freezing-thawing and Soaking Conditions (동결융해 및 수침조건을 고려한 경량기포혼합토의 거동 실험 연구)

  • In order to determine the variability of environmental characteristics of lightweight air-foamed soil using marine clay according to freezing-thawing and soaking conditions, unconfined compressive strength of the lightweight air-foamed soil samples made by changing the amount of cement under curing conditions of outdoor low temperature, underground or indoor wetting were observed. Compressive strength was not increased under freezing-thawing (temperature range of $-9.1^{\circ}C{\sim}17.2^{\circ}C$) regardless of the amount of cement but the more cement using, it was increased rapidly by underground curing conditions within 30 cm beneath ground level. Therefore, it is necessary to install insulation layer cutting off exterior cold air after construction of lightweight air-foamed soil in condition of freezing-thawing. Bulk density was increased too small under the long-time soaking condition, it tended to decrease rapidly when samples were dried up and had below 6% of water contents. But variability of compressive strength and bulk density was very small for preventing drying and keeping its wet state. The lightweight air-foamed soil that installed beneath ground water level or covered by soil can be evaluated as a long-term reliable construction material.

Effects of Freezing Rate and Storage Temperature on the Degree of Retrogradation, Texture and Microstructure of Cooked Rice (동결속도 및 저장온도가 취반된 쌀의 노화도, 조직감 및 미세구조에 미치는 영향)

  • Cooked rices were frozen at four different rates(3, 5, 7 and 12 hr) of maximum ice crystal formation zone and stored at $-20^{\circ}C\;and\;-70^{\circ}C$ for 3 months. Freezing rate, storage temperature and storage period all affected the degree of retrogradation of cooked rice. As the maximum ice crystal formation zone increased from 3 hrs to 12 hrs, the degree of retrogradation of cooked rice increased from 14.9% to 40.0%. Further retrogradation occurred during the freezing storage and cooked rice stored at $-20^{\circ}C$ retrograded faster than that held at $-70^{\circ}C$. The hardness and adhesiveness of frozen cooked rice thawed in $40^{\circ}C$ water were measured. Hardness of the frozen cooked rice was higher than that of non-frozen sample and was higher at lower freezing rate. However, the hardness of cooked rice decreased after 3 months of storage. On the other hand, the adhesiveness decreased during the freezing processing, and adhesiveness decreased more rapidly at a higher freezing rate. However, the adhesiveness of cooked rice increased after 3 months of the storage, and the level of decrease was higher at $-70^{\circ}C$ than at $-20^{\circ}C$. After 3 months of storage, ice crystal size of frozen cooked rice became larger by recrystalization than that of frozen sample prior to storage. Microstructure of cooked rice was damaged by ice crystal formation and its growth when observed by scanning electron microscope.

Studies of the Ultrarapid Freezing of In Vitro Fertilized Bovine Embryos I. Studies on the Survival Rates after Rapid Frozen-Thawing of In Vitro Fertilized Bovine Embryos (소 체외수정란의 초급속동결에 관한 연구 II. 소 체외수정란의 초급속동결 융해후의 생존성에 관한 연구)

  • This stduy was carried out in order to investigate the effects of cryoprotective concentration and equilibration time on survival rate of ultrarapidly frozen in vitro fertilized bovine embryos. In vitro fertilized bovine embryos, following dehydration by cryoprotective agents and sucorese were directly plunged into liquid nitrogen and thawed in 38$^{\circ}C$ water. Survival rate was defined by development rate to the morula and blaqstocyst stage after in vitro culture of by FDA test. The results are summarized as follows : 1. The survival rates of in vitro fertilized bovine embryos after ultrarapid frozen-thawing in the freezing medium of 0.25M sucroese added 2.0M, 2.5M, 3.0M, 3.5M, 4.0M glycerol were 75.0%, 72.0%, 67.6%, 44.8% and 18.3% respectively. 2. The survival rates of in vitro fertilized bovine embryos after ultrarapid frozen-thawing in the freezing medium of 0.25M sucrose added 2.0M, 2.5M, 3.0M, 3.5M, 4.0M DMSO were 64.0%, 66.7%, 70.8%, 52.7% and 18.6, respectively. 3. The survival rates of in vitro fertilized bovine embryos after ultrarapid frozen-thawing in the freezing medium of 0.25M sucrose added 2.0M, 2.5M, 3.0M, 3.5M, 4.0M propanediol were 68.4%, 64.9%, 63.2%, 62.2% and 34.7%, respectively. 4. The survival rates of in vitro fertilized bovine embryos after ultrarapid frozen-thawing in the freezing medium of 2.50M glycerol added 0.1M, 0.25M, 0.5M, 0.75M, sucrose were 60.5%, 72.2%, 70.1% and 54.9%, respectively. The survival rate of in vitro fertilized embryos after ultrarapid frozen-thawing in the freezing medium of 2.5M glycerol added 0.25M sucrose were higher than concentration of 0.10M, 0.50M and 0.75M sucrose. 5. The equilibration time on the survival rate of in vitro fertilized bovine embryos was attained after short period of time(2.5~5min.) in the freezing medium added 0.25M sucrose and 3.0M DMSO higher than long period time(1~20min.).

Studies on the Effects of Co-culture of Cumulus Cell, Oviduct Epithelial Cell and Hormones and Freezing on !fl Vitro Developmental Rates of Bovine Embryos (소 수정란의 난구세포, 난관 상피세포, 호르몬과의 공배양 및 동결이 체외발생에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구)

  • The studies were carried out to investigate the effects of co-culture with cumulus cells and oviduct epithelial cells on the in vitro fertilization and cleavage rate of bovine follicular cocytes and to determine the optimum thawing temperature and equilibration time on in vitro developmental rate of frozen bovine embryos. The ovaries were obtained from slaughtered Korean native cows. The follicular oocytes were cultured in TGM-199 medium containing 10 IU /ml의 PM SG, 10 IU /ml의 hCG, ip g/ml의 $\beta$-estradiol and 10% FCS for 24~48 hrs in incubator with 5% $CO_2$ in air at 38.5$^{\circ}C$. The bovine embryos following dehydration by cryoprotective agents and a various concentration of sucrose were directly plunged into liquld nitrogen and thawed in 3$0^{\circ}C$ water. Survival rate was defined as developmental rate on in vitro culture or FDA-test. The results are sunanarized as followes :1. The in vitro fertilization and in vitro developmental rates of bovine oocytes co-cultured with cumulus cells in TCM499 medium were 75.0~76.8% and 17.3~27.6%, respect-ively. And in-vitro fertilization rates of cumulus-enclosed oocytes(55.4%)were significantly(p<0.05) higher than cumulus-denuded oocytes (23.1%). 2. The in vitro fertilization and in vitro developmental rates of bovine oocytes co-cultured with l$\times$ l04cells /ml, 1 x l06cells /ml, lx l08cells /ml and 1 x l015cells /ml oviduct epithelial cells in TCM-199 medium were 74.5~77.8% and 15.7~21.20 respectively.3. The in-vitro fertilization and in vitro developmental rates of bovine oocytes cocultured in '1CM-199 media containing PMSG, hCG, PMSG+hCG. PMSG+$\beta$-estradiol, hCG+$\beta$-estradiol 0 to 40 hrs after insemination were 74.0~77.4% and l8.9~23.l%, re-spectiv ely.4.The survival rates of bovine embryos thawed after rapid freezing in the freezing medium containing a various concentration of sucrose added 1.5M and 2.OM glycerol,DMSO and propanediol were 23.5~31.4% and 20.6~34.l%, respectively. 5. The temperature thawed at 3$0^{\circ}C$ after rapid freezing of bovine embryos resulted in a significantly higher embryos survival rate than did at 2$0^{\circ}C$ and 35$^{\circ}C$.6. The equilibration time on the survival rates of bovine embryos was attained after short period of time(2.5~5 min.) in the freezing medium higher than long period of time (10~20min.). An Experimental Study on the Effectiveness of Soil Compaction at Below-Freezing Temperatures (동결 온도에서 다짐효과에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • Korea has four distinct seasons, showing hot and humidity in summer and cold weather lasted in winter. Domestic research on earth work has been developed according to the seasonal characteristics, and most of research topics have focused on the effect of freezing-thawing on the performance of geo-materials. However, the previous research was performed on the ground compacted at room temperature and therefore, the effect of the sub-zero temperature at the time of construction was not fully investigated. The ground characteristics compacted at freezing temperature can be different from those at room temperature and show different characteristics of strength and deformation caused by freezing and thawing. Therefore, the compaction tests on sandy materials were conducted under various temperature at $-3^{\circ}C$ and $-8^{\circ}C$ with various fine contents of 0%, 5%, 10% and 15% in weight fraction. The effectiveness of soil compaction at below-freezing temperatures were compared with the compaction at room temperature at $18^{\circ}C$ in terms of the maximum dry unit weight and optimum water contents. Based on the test results, the maximum dry unit weight tends to decrease with the freezing temperature and the relative compaction at $-8^{\circ}C$ can not be satisfied with general specification standard.

Long-term Preservation of Bombyx mori Stocks by Frozen Gonad Storage (생식소 동결에 의한 누에 유전자원의 장기보존)

  • For a long-term preservation of silkworm stocks by frozen gonad storage, fundamental topics such as freezing rate and transplanting stage of the gonad, proper cryoprotectant, and super-cooling temperature and freezing point of the freezing medium were examined and following results were obtained. Proper method to anesthetize the ovary-recipient silkworm was to dip the animal to cold water for 10 minutes, and the ovary taken from the 4th instar larvae was more suitable for freezing-preservation than that from the 5th. Concerning the cryoprotectant, glycerol and DMSO were effective to prevent cryoinjury of the ovary, but sorbitol was not. The supercooling temperature and freezing point of the medium to freeze the ovary and testes were checked, and consulting with the results desirable cooling rate was confirmed. On the desirable conditions of transplanting methods, freezing rate and cryoprotectant concentration ect., the next generation was obtained when the females implanted frozen-thawed ovaries mated with normal males, but none of the normal females mated with the males implanted frozen-thawed testes laid fertilized eggs. Now it is needed to improve the connecting ration of the ducts associated with the transplanted testis to those of the hosts.

Effects of Freezing and Thawing Treatments on Natural Microflora, Inoculated Listeria monocytogenes and Campylobacter jejuni on Chicken Breast (냉동과 해동처리가 계육 가슴살의 natural microflora, 접종된 Listeria monocytogenes와 Campylobacter jejuni에 미치는 영향)

  • The effects of freezing and thawing conditions on microbiological quality and microstructure change of inoculated (Listeria monocytogenes and Campylobacter jejuni) and non-inoculated chicken breasts were investigated. Chicken breasts were frozen with air blast freezing (-20, -70, and $-150^{\circ}C$), ethanol ($-70^{\circ}C$) and liquid nitrogen ($-196^{\circ}C$) immersion freezing. There were no significant differences on the populations of L. monocytogenes inoculated with chicken breasts under different freezing conditions. However, air blast freezing ($-20^{\circ}C$) resulted in significant reductions for total aerobic bacteria and C. jejuni compared to the control and other freezing treatments. The frozen samples were thawed with (hot or cold) air blast, water immersion, and high pressure thawing at $4^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$. the populations of total aerobic bacteria, and yeast and mold in the frozen chicken breast increased by 5.78 and 4.05 log CFU/g after water immersion thawing ($25^{\circ}C$) treatment. After five freeze-thaw cycles, the populations of total aerobic bacteria, yeast and mold, and C. jejuni were reduced by 0.29~1.40 log cycles, while there were no significant differences (P > 0.05) in the populations of L. monocytogenes depending on the freeze-thaw cycles. In addition, the histological examination of chicken breasts showed an increase in spacing between the muscle fiber and torn muscle fiber bundles as the number of freeze-thaw cycles increased. These results indicate that freezing and thawing processes could affect in the levels of microbial contamination and the histological change of chicken breasts.

A Study on Ignition and Fire Risks of Electric Heat Wire (전기적 열선의 발화 및 화재 위험성에 관한 연구)

  • This study aims to examine the risk of electrical fire in places where electric heat wires are used. In general, the use of electric heating wires is becoming more common and prevalent in a bid to prevent increasing damage caused by freezing and bursting in residential water pipes, factory pipes and irrigation pipes in vinyl greenhouse and a variety of heat wire products are available in market with legal safety requirements imposed on them. However, the widespread use of anti-freezing burst heat wire products has caused increasing incidents of fire, which often fail to be incorporated into statistics due to quick onsite extinguishing and insignificant damage although damage is gradually on the rise. Against this backdrop, this study aims to look into the possibility of ignition caused by electric heat wires and the mechanism of how it turns into catching fire through overheat and short circuit tests for anti-freezing burst electrical heat wires (hereinafter called the 'heat wire') and expects to serve as the basis for further observations and analyses on the cause of fire and the process of ignition in a scientific manner.
