We consider long nonlinear waves in the two-layer flow of an inviscid and incompressible fluid bounded above by a free surface and below by a rigid boundary. The flow is forced by a bump on the bottom. The derivation of the forced KdV equation fails when the density ratio h and the depth ratio ρ yields a condition 1+hρ=(2-h)((1-h)²+4ρh)/sup 1/2/. To overcome this difficulty we derive a forced modified KdV equation by a refined asymptotic method. Numerical solutions are given and hydraulic fall solution of a two layer fluid is expressed analytically in the case that derivation of the forced KdV(FKdV) equaition fails.

For the analysis of radiating noise problems in medium-to-high frequency ranges, the Energy Flow Boundary Element Method (EFBEM) was developed. EFBEM is the analysis technique that applies the Boundary Element Method (BEM) to Energy Flow Analysis (EFA). The fundamental solutions representing spherical wave property for radiating noise problems in open field and considering the free surface effect in underwater are developed. Also the directivity factor is developed to express wave's directivity patterns in medium-to-high frequency ranges. Indirect EFBEM by using fundamental solutions and fictitious source was applied to open field and underwater noise problems successfully. Through numerical applications, the acoustic energy density distributions due to vibration of a simple plate model and a sphere model were compared with those of commercial code, and the comparison showed good agreement in the level and pattern of the energy density distributions.

There are various hull types on the mid-size superyachts around $30\;{\sim}\;45m$. In any case, it is important to design the proper hull shape in viewpoint of the reduction of wave resistance, because small vessels such as superyachts are running at relatively higher Froude Number than other merchant ships. FLUENT with a VOF option was employed to investigate the flow fields around the superyachts having three-typical hull types: U-, V-types and catamaran. Overall performances including free surface flow were compared to figure out hydrodynamic characteristics of superyachy by numerical simulation.

In this study, the supercavitating flow of a high-velocity moving body near air-water surface is calculated and analyzed based on a commercial CFD software ANSYS Fluent. The effect of regular wave parameters including both wave height and wavelength on the cavitating flow and force characteristics of a body at different velocities is investigated. It is found that the cavity shape, lift coefficient and drag coefficient of the body vary periodically with wave fluctuation, and the variation period is basically consistent with wave period. When the wavelength is much greater than the cavity length, the effect of wave on supercavitation is the alternating effect of axial compression and radial compression. However, when the wavelength varies around the cavity length, the cavity often crosses two adjacent troughs and is compressed periodically by the two wave troughs. With the variation of wavelength, the average area of cavity shows a different trend with the change of wave height.

A numerical work was performed to study the flow behaviors of the open channel type flow with its geometric boundary conditions being similar to that of the Multi-Stage-Flash evaporator with and without a baffle. For the analysis, two-dimensional steady turbulent flow was assumed and the widely known k-.epsilon. turbulence model was usded. SIMPLE algorithm and the power difference scheme were used for the numerical approach. Numerical results generally agree with the previous experimental results though there are some uncertainties at far downstream and near the free surface due to the three dimensionality of the flow and surface waves. Without a baffle, the flow has basically the shape of the submerged plane wall jet with its upper boundary at downstream being sharply curved toward the free surface. For the flow with a baffle, recirculation flow patterns are observed at the upper inlet portion and at the backside of the baffle. For the case without a baffle, it was also confirmed that the ratio between the liquid level and the gate opening height is the most important parameter to determine the flow behavior.

In this paper, we report the numerical and experimental solutions of the axi-symmetric flows in the axial plane driven by an impingement of fluid from the bottom wall of a circular cylinder. We managed to visualize successfully the flow pattern shown on the vertical plane through the container axis. The numerical results are shown to compare well with the experimental results for the case of infinity Rossby number. The satisfactory agreement between the two results was possible when in the numerics the free surface was treated as a solid wall so that a no-slip condition was applied on the surface. The numerical solutions reveal that inertial oscillation plays an important role at small Rossby numbers, or at a larger background rotation.

A Finite Volume Method for the two-dimensional incompressible, two-fluids Navies-Stokes equation and level-set scheme are used to analyse the interface of two fluids, free-surface flow. The numerical characteristics and the applicability of level-set scheme are brief1y investigated and appraised by solving oscillating small surface wave in a water tank and dam break problems. In the numerical results, a method for improving the convergence of the solution is presented.
This paper describes the characteristics of the fluctuating lift forces when a circular cylinder vibrates in the cross-flow direction. The response characteristics on elastically supported the circular cylinder was first examined by a free-vibration test. Next, flow-induced vibrations obtained by the free-vibration test were reproduced by a forced-vibration test, and then the characteristics of the fluctuating lift forces, the work done by the fluctuating lift, the behavior of the rolling-up of the separated shear layers were investigated on the basis of the visualized flow patterns. The main findings were that (i) the fluctuating lift forces become considerably large than those of a stationary circular cylinder, (ii) negative pressure generates on the surface of the circular cylinder when the rolling-up of separated shear layer begins, (iii) the phase between the fluctuating lift force and the cylinder displacement changes abruptly as the reduced velocity $U_r$ increases, and (iv) whether the generating cross-flow vibration becomes divergent or convergent can be described based on the work done by the fluctuating lift force. Furthermore, it was found that the generation of cross-flow vibration can be perfectly suppressed when the small tripping rods are installed on the surface of the circular cylinder.

Abrasive flow machining is useful to abrasive polish a internal or external surface of the free shape dimensional parts, which are used in many fields such as machine tool parts, semi-conductor, and medical component industries. The machining process is that two hydraulic cylinders, which are located surface to surface, are enforce media to the passage between workpiece and tooling part alternately, and then the abrasives included in the media pass the passage and polish the surface of workpiece. The media which is made of polymer and abrasive plays complex have workpiece by its viscoelastic characteristics. In this study, the media for AMF was made by mixing viscoelastic polymer with alumina and silicon carbide abrasive respectively. As a result, alumina include media is also the experiments of deburring the inside burr of in order to analyse the deburring machinability of abrasive flow machining according to various machining parameters which were media flow rate extrusion pressure, passage gap, media viscosity, abrasive content, and abrasive grain size.

With the development of the technology of underwater moving bodies, the need for developing the knowledge of surface effect interaction of free surface and underwater moving bodies is increased. Hence, the two-phase flow is a subject which is interesting for many researchers all around the world. In this paper, the non-linear free surface deformations which occur during the water-exit of a circular cylinder due to its buoyancy are solved using finite volume discretization based code, and using Volume of Fluid (VOF) scheme for solving two phase flow. Dynamic mesh model is used to simulate dynamic motion of the cylinder. In addition, the effect of cylinder mass in presence of an external force is studied. Moreover, the oblique exit and entry of a circular cylinder with two exit angles is simulated. At last, water-exit of a circular cylinder in six degrees of freedom is simulated in 3D using parallel processing. The simulation errors of present work (using VOF method) for maximum velocity and height of a circular cylinder are less than the corresponding errors of level set method reported by previous researchers. Oblique exit shows interesting results; formation of waves caused by exit of the cylinder, wave motion in horizontal direction and the air trapped between the waves are observable. In 3D simulation the visualization of water motion on the top surface of the cylinder and the free surface breaking on the front and back faces of the 3D cylinder at the exit phase are observed which cannot be seen in 2D simulation. Comparing the results, 3D simulation shows better agreement with experimental data, specially in the maximum height position of the cylinder.
