This is a presentation of the paper published as Kimm et al. 2016, ApJ, 823, 52. We investigate the formation of metal-poor globular clusters (GCs) at the center of two dark matter halos with $Mhalo{\sim}4{\times}107Msun$ at z>10 using cosmological radiation-hydrodynamics simulations. We find that very compact (${\leq}1$ pc) and massive (${\sim}6{\times}105Msun$) clusters form rapidly when pristine gas collapses isothermally with the aid of efficient $Ly{\alpha}$ emission during the transition from molecular-cooling halos to atomic-cooling halos. Because the local free-fall time of dense star-forming gas is very short (${\ll}1Myr$), a large fraction of the collapsed gas is turned into stars before stellar feedback processes blow out the gas and shut down star formation. Although the early stage of star formation is limited to a small region of the central star-forming disk, we find that the disk quickly fragments due to metal enrichment from supernovae. Sub-clusters formed in the fragmented clouds eventually merge with the main cluster at the center. The simulated clusters closely resemble the local GCs in mass and size but show a metallicity spread that is much wider than found in the local GCs. We discuss a role of pre-enrichment by Pop III and II stars as a potential solution to the latter issue. Although not without shortcomings, it is encouraging that a naive blind (not tuned) cosmological simulation presents a possible channel for the formation of at least some massive GCs.

Since the high heat generation of LED chips can cause a reduction in lifetime, degradation of luminous efficiency, and variation of color temperature, studies have been carried out on the optimization of LED packaging and heat sinks. Recently, LED packages have been applied to high-power lights such as car headlamps or street lights, and it is known that cooling using only free convection is not at all efficient. Thus, in this study, a heat pipe with forced convection was examined for the optimization of the cooling performance in high-power LED lights. In addition, optimal on-off control of a fan was adopted to increase the fan lifetime, since the lifetime of the fan is generally shorter than that of the LEDs.

Small and medium-size buildings employ a multi-distributed individual air-conditioning system that utilizes package air conditioners instead of centralized cooling systems, which can allow easier building management and maintenance, along with a diversification of facility use. Inverter driven system heat pumps have been developed to achieve not only an easy distribution control, allowing free combination of indoor units with different models and different capacities, but also wide applications to intelligent air conditioning. However, the control algorithms of the system heat pump are limited in the open literature, due to complicated operating conditions. In this paper, an inverter-driven system heat pump having two indoor units with electronic expansion valves (EEV) was simulated in the cooling mode. An integral optimum regulating controller employing the state space control method was also simulated, and applied to the system-heat pump system, to obtain efficient control of the MIMO (multi input multi output) system. The simulation model for the controller yielded satisfactory prediction results. The new control model can be successfully utilized as a basic tool in controller design.

Graphene has generated significant interest in the recent years as a functional material for electronics, sensing, and energy applications due to its unique electrical, optical, and mechanical properties. Much of the considerable interest in graphene stems from results obtained for samples mechanically exfoliated from graphite. Practical applications, however, require reliable and well-controlled methods for fabrication of large area graphene films. Recently high quality graphene layers were fabricated using chemical vapor deposition (CVD) on nickel and copper with methane as the source of the carbon atoms. Here, we report a simple and efficient method to synthesize graphene layers using solid carbon source. Few-layer graphene films are grown using filtered vacuum arc source (FVAS) technique by evaporation of carbon atom on Ni catalytic metal and subsequent annealing of the samples at 800$^{\circ}$C. In our system, carbon atoms diffuse into the Ni metal layer at elevated temperatures followed by their segregation as graphene on the free surface during the cooling down step as the solubility of carbon in the metal decrease. For a given annealing condition and cooling rate, the number of graphene layers is easily controlled by changing the thickness of the initially evaporated amorphous carbon film. Based on the Raman analysis, the quality of graphene is comparable to other synthesis methods found in the literature, such as CVD and chemical methods.
Porous thick film of alumina which is fabricated by freeze tape casting using a camphene-camphor-acrylate vehicle. Alumina slurry is mixed above the melting point of the camphene-camphor solvent. Upon cooling, the camphene-camphor crystallizes from the solution as particle-free dendrites, with the $Al_2O_3$ powder and acrylate liquid in the interdendritic spaces. Subsequently, the acrylate liquid is solidified by photopolymerization to offer mechanical properties for handling. The microstructure of the porous alumina film is characterized for systems with different cooling rate around the melting temperature of camphor-camphene. The structure of the dendritic porosity is compared as a function of ratio of camphene-camphor solvent and acrylate content, and $Al_2O_3$ powder volume fraction in acrylate in terms of the dendrite arm width.

Electrolyte matrix fabrication process can be classifed as hot pressing, tape casting, callendering, electrophoretic deposition. however, these have limits in practice. Hot pressing is cumbersome method, because of careful heating and cooling. Furthermore, the perfected tile is so fragile that it is difficult to fit in a cell. Therefore this method is not adequate for mass production of the electrolyte matrix. Using electrophoretic deposition method, a very thin matrix can be made, but many attempts of the electrolyte embeding were found to be failure. Tape casting and callendering methods are employed in most of the matrix fabrication for the present. But these methods require lots of water as a solvent, so that coating of the LiAlO sub(2) with electrolyte is difficult. Recently, hot roll milling method has been developed and the perfected matrix was proved to be free from crack. The method, however, needs a roller to make a matrix and a perfected matrix is carefully striped off from the cooled roller. Therefore, this method requires a long time due to the cooling process. The author proposes a cold rolling process. On this method, heated slurry of the LiAlO sub(2) mixed with binder, is rolled with a cold roller. The heated slurry dose not adhere to the roller, since contacted hot slurry is rapidly solidified. Therefore fabrication speed is increased, without getting rid of merits of the hot rolling process.

To manufacture Al MMCs, in-situ melt mixing process is used because it is free from contamination, and it makes reinforcements homogeneously dispersed. Large eddy simulation method is used to find the optimum melt mixing condition. At the Re 3000, the most suitable mixing is occurred between Al-Ti and Al- B melts. The in-situ formed $TiB_2$ particles has the size varying from 40 nm to 130 nm, due to the increase of cooling rate, and exhibits a homogeneous dispersion. And the interface between reinforcement and matrix is clean. Both hardness and Young's modulus of this composite are improved with increasing the cooling rate.

In the design of the split type free displacer Stilting cryocooler the motion of the displacer is very important to decide the cooling capacity, which depends upon the working gas pressure, the swept volume in the compression space and the expansion space, operating frequency, the phase shift between piston and displacer, etc. In this study, Stirling cryocooler actuated by the electric farce of the dual linear motor is designed and manufactured. Cool down characteristics of the cold end with laser displacement sensor in the expander of the Stilting cryocooler is evaluated. The charging pressure was 15kg$_{f}$/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and operating frequency was 50Hz. Input power and the lowest temperature were about 32W and 67K, respectively. And, displacement of the piston is measured by LVDTs (Linear Variable Differential Transformers), displacement of thedisplacer is measured by laser optic method, and phase shift between piston and displacer is discussed. As the peak-to-peak pressure of the compressor was increased, peak-to-peak displacement of the displacer was increased. The peak-to-peak displacement of the displacer increases in the range of 0 - 64.5Hz(resonant frequency of the displacer), but decreases steeply when the operating frequency is bigger than the resonant frequency. Finally when the phase shift between displacements of the Piston and displacer is 45。, operating frequency is optimum and is decided by resonant frequency of the expander, mass and cross section area of the displacer and constant by friction and flow resistance.e.

Simulation of local external forcing and its response in the rotation table experiment has been investigated. Spatially-uniform external forcings have been applied in many experimental studies, however, based on the fact that the north-south distribution of the wind-stress curl and the existence of local maximum of the sea surface heat loss in the northern part of the East Sea, new method of combined effects of local forcings has been employed in separate experiments. Carefully designed local source or sink at the bottom of the cylindrical container can produce horizontal pressure gradient within the Ekman layer, and consequently the interior also attains the same pressure gradient that produces geostrophic interior circulation. In order to keep free surface during the local-surface cooling, a side-wall cooling method is suggested. For the various type of local forcing including the effects local cooling and the periodic change of local wind-stress curl, western-boundary flow in terms of its strength, position of separation from the boundary have been observed.

Although combustion is essential in most energy generation processes, it is one of the major causes of air pollution. Exhaust pipes with circular fin were designed to study the effect of cooling the recirculated exhaust gases (EGR) of Diesel engines on the chemical composition of the exhaust gases and the reduction in the percentages of pollutant emissions. The gases examined in this study were oxides of nitrogen (NOx), carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) and carbon monoxide (CO). In addition, $O_2$ concentration in the exhaust was measured. The designs adopted in this study were about exhaust pipes with solid and hollow fins around them direct surface force measurement in water using a nano size colloidal probe technique. The direct force measurement between colloidal surfaces has been an essential topic in both theories and applications of surface chemistry. As particle size is decreased from micron size down to true Carbon nano Colloid size (<10 nm), surface forces are increasingly important. Nano particles at close proximity or high solids loading are expected to show a different behavior than what can be estimated from continuum and mean field theories. The current tools for directly measuring interaction forces such as a surface force apparatus or atomic force microscopy (AFM) are limited to particles much larger than nano size. This paper use Water and CNC fluid at normal cooling system of EGR. Experimental result showed all good agreement at Re=$2.54{\times}10^4$ by free convection and Re=$3.36{\times}10^4$ by forced air furnace.
