  • To provide required flow rates of cooling or circulating water properly, approach flow conditions of vertical pump systems should be in compliance with state of the art acceptance criteria. The direct inflow should be vortex free, with low pre-rotation and symmetric velocity distribution. Physical model investigations are common practice and the best tool of prediction to evaluate, to optimize and to document flow conditions inside intake structures for vertical pumping systems. Optimization steps should be accomplished with respect to installation costs and complexity on site. The report shows evaluation of various approach flow conditions inside a compact waste water pumping station. The focus is on the occurrence of free surface vortices and the evaluation of air entrainment for various water level and flow rates. The presentation of the results includes the description of the investigated intake structure, occurring flow problems and final recommendations.

  • Lead-free ceramics with a composition of 0.55 mol%$K_4CuNb_8O_23-(K_{1-x}Na_x)NbO_3$ (KCN-KNNx) where $0.45{\leq}x{\leq}0.60$ were synthesized by conventional ceramic processing. Results revealed that the addition of Na was effective in changing the microstructure and relative density of KCN-KNNx. Further, the addition of Na resulted in a slight shift of the phase transition temperatures (To-t and Tc) toward low values. A high mechanical quality factor (Qm) of 1850 was found atx=0.54, which might be due to the build-up of an internal bias field (Ei) within KCN. Thermal hysteresis in KNNx was confirmed with an increase in the Na content during the heating and cooling cycles, resulting from structural changes. Thus, KCN-KNNx with x=0.54 exhibits excellent piezoelectric properties with d33 (97 pC/N), kp (36%), and Qm (1850), being promising candidates for application in high-power piezoelectric devices.

  • In this paper, a new performance equation of bath tubs has been derived, which is very characteristically illuminating and in good agreement with experiments : $$T=T_{\infty}+(T_0-T_{\infty})e-\frac{k(A'_f+A_0)}{Mc_{P{\Delta}x}t$$, where $T_{\infty}$ is the temperature of the bathroom, $T_0$ that of the bathwater at t=0, k the overall heat conductivity of the tub- wall, $A'_f$ the equivalent surface area to the wall, $A_0$ the submerged area of the tub-wall, M mass of the bath-water, $C_p$ the specific heat of the bathwater and ${\Delta}x$ the thickness of the tub-wall. Here the equivalent-free surface area is written as $$A'_f=mA_f,\;m=const.(1-{\phi})^{0.88}$$ : where m is a numerical factor which is determined by a simple experiment and some calculation, {\phi}$ the relative humidity and $A_f$ the real free-surface area. From this study, it has been clarified that cooling of bath-water is mainly due to mass-transfer through evaporation from the free surface and conductive heat loss through the tub-wall is minor, which rather gaily mock at common sense. The effect of keeping bathwater warn by increase of the tub-wall thickness is also analyzed by a new idea of the thickness gain factor.

  • The residual stresses in injection-molded plastic parts can be divided into two, i.e., the flow-induced residual stress produced in flowing stage and the thermally-induced residual stress produced in cooling stage. Especially, the main source for the defect in the final parts, such as warpage, is known to be the thermally-induced stresses. For the freely quenched samples the structures of residual stresses and bire-fringence have been investigated by many researchers extensively. However, the boundary condition for free quenching was found to be improper to study actual injection molding process. In the present study a datailed structure of the residual stresses and birefringence produced under constrained quenching has been investigated experimentally. In constrained quenched samples a similar pattern but much less stress values than that for the freely quenched samples has been found in the case of the thickness of 1.0 mm. Howvere, in the case of the thickness of 4.0mm, totally different stress profile has been found experimentally. Suprisingly uniform birefringence throughout whole thickness has been found for all the cases of constrained quenching. Finally, to explain the mechanism to produce the final residual stresses and bire-fringence some preliminary numerical results including free volume theory have been introduced briefly.

  • We studied on the injection molding conditions of defect-free PMMA lens for surgical light. When the heat temperature of mold is low, more imperfect molding or weldlines and flow marks have showed. A defective lens depends on low fluidity of the PMMA resin and its temperature is high, a flexural strain has occurred. The longer cooling time of specimens, the more cracks have occurred due to resin crystallization. In this study, optimal molding conditions for defect-free PMMA lens is as follows. The heat temperature of core mold was 110 [$^{\circ}C$] and also the cooling time was 25 [sec]. PMMA materials can realized low expense to produce plastic optical lens and applications.

  • In order to improve extinguishing performance of water mist, many studies of additives have been conducted. In this study, viscosity agent which has the ability to improve extinguishing performance by adhering to the surface on fire was used and fluorine-free surfactant was also added to water to enhance water's wetting ability. This study aimed to verify optimal concentration of extinguishing of additives according to fire source and extinguishing performance by comparison with pure water. In case of wood crib fire, the results show that flame suppression and extinguishing time of sodium alginate 0.4 wt.% are 3.4 times and 2.2 times shorter than those of pure water in 0.2 MPa respectively. It seems that large amount of water adhere to surface on fire, thus cooling effect on surface was enhanced. Also water consumption of sodium alginate 0.4wt.% is up to 65% lower than that of pure water. In case of heptane fire, extinguishing time of cocobetaine 0.1 wt.% is 9.7 times shorter than that of pure water in 0.2 MPa. It is thought that because cocobetaine can block oxygen and suppress oil mist by making emulsion film on fire surface due to a low surface tension. On the other hand, water consumption of cocobetaine 0.1 wt.% is 92% lower than that of pure water.

  • In this study, fault symptoms were simulated and analyzed for a single-effect absorption chiller. The fault patterns of fault detection parameters were tabulated using the fault symptom simulation results. Fault detection and diagnosis by a process history-based method were performed for the in-situ experiment of a single-effect absorption chiller. Simulated fault modes for the in-situ experimental study are the decreases in cooling water and chilled water mass flow rates. Five no-fault reference models for fault detection of a single-effect absorption chiller were developed using fault-free steady-state data. A sensitivity analysis of fault detection using the normalized distance method was carried out with respect to fault progress. When mass flow rates of the cooling and chilled water decrease by more than 19.3% and 17.8%, respectively, the fault can be detected using the normalized distance method, and COP reductions are 6.8% and 4.7%, respectively, compared with normal operation performance. The pattern recognition method for fault diagnosis of a single-effect absorption chiller was found to indicate each failure mode accurately.

  • A numerical model is developed to analyze the incompressible unsteady flow induced by the pump trip-out in the cooling water discharge culvert of thermal power plants. The numerical models has various features to deal concureently with the overall behavior of complicated unsteady flow due to the presence of cooling water internal system, seal well, air chamber, culvert, manholes, open channel and sea water. A leap-frog finite difference scheme is employed to solve governing equations, and the model is tested for a simple case of two tanks connected with a pipe. A fixed free surface boundary condition used earlier at the downstream end of culvert for large water body is investigated.
