  • The typical blasting method adopted in Pasir Coal Mine is a surface blasting technique with a single free face. It means that there is only one free face, which is usually the ground surface. This kind of blasting method is easy to use but inevitably causes enormous ground vibrations, which, in turn, can affect the stability of the slopes comprising the various boundaries of the open pit mine. In addition, the method also has the problem of lowering the blast efficiency compared to other methods such as bench blasting methods or ones with more than two free faces. In this respect, a project was launched to develop a new blasting method that is suitable for controling the ground vibration and enhancing the blast efficiency. As a part of the project, authors investigated the current blasting method as well as the overall pit developing process in the mine, and established some important guidelines that should be observed during the whole development process. This paper presents the details of the typical blasting pattern and the pit developing method in the mine, and suggests the guidelines determined from the results of the observations.

  • Very High Temperature gas cooler Reactor (VHTR) has been considered as one of the most promising nuclear reactor because of many advantages including high inherent safety to avoid environmental pollution, high thermal efficiency and the role of secondary energy source. The TRISO coated fuel particles used in VHTR are composed of 4 layers as OPyC, SiC, IPyC and buffer PyC. The significance of CVD-SiC coatings used in tri-isotropic(TRISO) nuclear coated fuel particles is to maintain the strength of the whole particle. Various methods have been proposed to evaluate the mechanical properties of CVD-SiC film at room temperature. However, few works have been attempted to characterize properties of CVD-SiC film at high temperature. In this study, micro tensile system was newly developed for mechanical characterization of SiC thin film at elevated temperature. Two kinds of CVD-SiC films were prepared for micro tensile test. SiC-A had [111]-preferred orientation, while SiC-B had [220]-preferred orientation. The free silicon was co-deposited in SiC-B coating layer. The fracture strength of two different CVD-SiC films was characterized up to $1000^{\circ}C$.The strength of SiC-B film decreased with temperature. This result can be explained by free silicon, observed in SiC-B along the columnar boundaries by TEM. The presence of free silicon causes strength degradation. Also, larger Weibull-modulus was measured. The new method can be used for thin film material at high temperature.

  • This paper employs computational tools to investigate the diffraction effects in regular head waves on the added resistance and wake on the propeller plane. The objective ships are a 66,000 DWT bulk carrier and a 3,600 TEU container ship. Fixed and free to heave and pitch conditions at design speed have been taken into account. Two-phase unsteady Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations have been solved using the finite volume method; and a realizable k-ε model has been applied for the turbulent closure. The free surface is obtained by solving a VOF equation. The computations are carried out at the same scale of the model tests. Grid and numerical wave damping zones are applied to remove unwanted wave reflection at the boundaries. The computational results are analyzed using the Fourier series. The added resistances in waves at the free condition are higher than those at the fixed condition, which are nearly constant for all wavelengths. The wake velocity in waves is higher than that in calm water, and is accelerated where the wave crest locates on the propeller plane. When the vertical motion at the stern goes upward, the wake velocity also accelerated.

  • A lead-free bulk ceramic having a chemical formula $Ba_{0.8}Ca_{0.2}(Ti_{0.8}Zr_{0.1}Ce_{0.1})O_3$ (further termed as BCTZCO) is synthesized using mixed oxide route. The structural, dielectric, impedance, and conductivity properties, as well as the modulus of the synthesized sample are discussed in the present work. Analysis of X-ray diffraction data obtained at room temperature reveals the existence of some impurity phases. The natural surface morphology shows close packing of grains with few voids. Attempts have been made to study the (a) effect of microstructures containing grains, grain boundaries, and electrodes on impedance and capacitive characteristics, (b) relationship between properties and crystal structure, and (c) nature of the relaxation mechanism of the prepared samples. The relationship between the structure and physical properties is established. The frequency and temperature dependence of the dielectric properties reveal that this complex system has a high dielectric constant and low tangent loss. An analysis of impedance and related parameters illuminates the contributions of grains. The activation energy is determined for only the high temperature region in the temperature dependent AC conductivity graph. Deviation from the Debye behavior is seen in the Nyquist plot at different temperatures. The relaxation mechanism and the electrical transport properties in the sample are investigated with the help of various spectroscopic (i.e., dielectric, modulus, and impedance) techniques. This lead free sample will serve as a base for device engineering.

  • This study investigates vibro-acoustic characteristics of a short, thick cylinder containing a slot given a pined-free boundaries. Using the finite element analysis results, structural modes of the asymmetric cylinder (with a slot) are expressed as the linear combinations of modes of the symmetric cylinder made of same material with identical geometry except the slot. Based on synthesized modal vibrations, acoustic modes of the asymmetric cylinder are obtained with two approaches, i.e., Rayleigh integral calculation and modal expansion of the acoustic modes of the symmetric cylinder. Also, acoustic powers, max. sound pressure and directivity pattern are obtained from acoustic modes and verified with the boundary element analyses. Based on these results, the accuracy of proposed approaches in calculating the vibro-acoustic properties of a short, thick, asymmetric cylinder has been confirmed. The procedure can be applied to the similar cylinders with other boundaries or asymmetric properties. Also, attenuation of vibration and/or sound radiation of the cylinder type practical components can be studied using these approaches.

  • The history of contemporary art in the 20th century can be said the history of changes. Today the variety of objects destroy the boundaries of each genre. This study aims to understand the relationship between fashion and art that becomes closer by examining contemporary art in the Gwangju Biennale 2008 to enlarge the range of understanding of mutual communication between contemporary art and fabrics which are the object of fashion. The research method was to investigate the characteristics and expression methods of object fabrics shown in contemporary art through the review of papers published at home and abroad, related literatures, and Internet materials. Also, the meaning, technique, and methods of fabrics were analyzed from works introduced in the Gwangju Biennale 2008. In order to achieve this purpose, fabric was examined as the object of work in Gwangju Biennale 2008. As a result, it is found that fabric plays an important role in changing environment newly with more dynamic, abundant, and comfortable and softer feeling than any other artistic materials and enlarging the boundaries of artistic materials by exploring formative possibility. Furthermore, its multi-dimensional expression characteristic presents unbounded possibility. Fabric which has long formed close relationship with human life has taken its place as one genre now. It departs from the past principles of fabric handicraft and the restriction of a classical norm and becomes characteristic of very wide-ranging selection of materials and free expression. Its soft and warm texture provides emotional stability for a human. Although the peculiarity of fabric as an active concept to human environment and new materials and technique based on the aesthetic consciousness of a human rely on the high development of industry, it is significant that artists' liberation from their concept and material sense is accompanied by the expression of freedom.

  • This study conducted an operational evaluation of an emergency vehicle preemption system that can be operated as a wide-area unit beyond the boundaries of local governments. Analyzed the speed reduction rate of emergency vehicle dispatch data and traffic speed data to analyze the speed reduction rate of emergency vehicles operating in a wide area and region. In Goyang City, local dispatches were reduced by 50.8% and regional dispatches by 55.8%, while in Paju City, local dispatches were reduced by 55.1% and regional dispatches by 62.5%. The wide-area emergency vehicle preemption system proved to be effective when emergency vehicles were dispatched outside of local boundaries, such as confirming that there were many dispatches from Paju-si to Goyang-si when there were no large hospitals nearby. This study aims to help spread the wide-area emergency vehicle preemption system. Translated with DeepL.com (free version)

  • The effect of stuffing of TiN on the diffusion barrier property between A1 and Si was investigated. The stuffing of TiN was performed by annealing in a Nz ambient at $450^{\circ}C$ for 30min. By TEM analysis, it is identified that there are solid-free or open spaces of a b u t 10-20$\AA$ between the grains of asdeposited TiN. In the case of stuffed TiN, the width of solid-free or open spaces has been reduced to about 10$\AA$ or below. The combination of RBS and AES analyses showed that the asdeposited TiN had about 7at.% of oxygen, and that the stuffed TiN had about 10-15at.% of oxygen. The diffusion barrier test result shows that after annealing at $650^{\circ}C$ for lhour, the asdeposited TiN fails due to the formation of A1 spikes and Si pits in the Si substrate. However, in the case of stuffed TiN, there is no indication of Al spikes and Si pits at the same annealing condition. Thus, it is concluded that this stuffing of TiN significantly improves the diffusion barrier property of TiN between A1 and Si. It is considered that the stuffing effect results from the reduced diffusion through grain boundaries due to the reduced spacing of grain boundaries.

  • Properties of a free-standing diamond wafer with a diameter of 80 mm and a thickness of 900~950 $mu extrm{m}$ deposited by the multi-cathode direct current plasma assisted chemical vapor deposition (MCDC PACVD) method were investigated. Defects of the diamond film were observed by optical transmission microscopy and its crystallinity was characterized by Raman and IR spectroscopy. Defects were distributed partially on boundaries of the grain. In the grain, (111) plane contained a higher defect density than that on (100) plane. FWHM of Raman diamond peak and IR transmission at 10.6 $\mu\textrm{m}$ were 4.6 $\textrm{cm}^{-1}$ /~5.3 $\textrm{cm}^{-1}$ and 51.7 ~ 61.9 %, and their uniformity was $\pm$7% and $\pm$9%, respectively. The diamond quality decreased with going from center to edge of the wafer.

  • Since the numerical analysis was adopted in the mold design, lots of computational methods have been proposed for the simulations of casting processes for the various shaped molds. Today, it is possible to simulate the filling and solidification processes of most casts using the VOF technique. Though the three-dimensional numerical model based on the Cartesian coordinate system can be applied to any shape of cast, it becomes very inefficient when the three-dimensional model is applied to the cast of axi-symmetrical shape since the control volume includes at least 11 of the physical model. In addition, the more meshes should be distributed along the circumferential boundaries of curved shape in the Cartesian coordinate system fur the better results, while such curved circumferential boundary does not need to be considered in the two-dimensional cylindrical coordinate system. This motivates the present study i.e. developing a two-dimensional numerical model for the axi-symmetrically shaped casts. The SIMPLER algorithm, the VOF method, and the equivalent specific heat method have been adopted in the combined algorithm for the flow calculation, the free surface tracking, and the phase change heat transfer, respectively. The numerical model has been applied to the casting process of a pulley, and it was proven that the mesh and time effective calculation was accomplished comparing to the calculation using three-dimensional model.
