Franchising for Global Distribution: A Systematic Review

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to explore areas that have been studied extensively in previous studies related to franchising as a platform for global distribution. Furthermore, franchising is a strategic distribution method that gives entrepreneurs the opportunity to replicate an established business model. In addition, franchisees benefit from the use of established branding and receive support from the franchisor. Research design, data, and methodology: This study used the Preferred Reporting Items Systematics Review and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) method to analyse data from 2003 to 2023 in the Web of Science and Scopus databases. Results: A total of 79 articles were identified and analysed to see trends and related themes such as product distribution, business distribution, business strategy, emerging market, and franchising relationship. Also, publication trends by year related to franchises are also presented. Conclusions: Overall, the research trend related to franchising as a global distribution is well seen, and every year, many researchers begin to explore the topic of franchising as a method of distribution that can be explored from various aspects either quantitatively or qualitatively. Lastly, limitations and recommendations are made to provide guidance for future studies related to the topic broadly and deeply in enriching the findings.

  • 오늘날 국내 외의 경제발전에 서비스산업의 비중이 매우 커지고 있으며, 미래사회에도 지속적으로 증가될 것으로 예측되며, 이러한 서비스 산업의 경영방식의 하나로 프랜차이즈시스템이 확산되고 있다. 프랜차이즈 시스템(Franchise System)은 선진국에서 인기를 끌고 있는 선진국형 유통형태이며, 유통시장 개방 이후 국내에서는 외국유명브랜드를 중심으로 급속한 성장세를 보이고 있다. 이로 인해 국내 제조 및 유통업계에서는 미래유망업종으로 프랜차이즈시스템에 대한 관심이 커지고 있다. 최근 들어 외환위기와 금융위기를 계기로 다양한 연령계층이 노동시장으로 유입되면서 단기간 내에 적은 자본으로 나의 사업을 창업하고자 하는 인구가 크게 늘고 있다. 이 중 상당수는 독립적 사업을 창업하지만 사업에 대한 경험과 전문지식이 부족하면서 실패를 경험하는 경우가 크게 늘고 있다. 이에 비해 프랜차이즈 창업은 검증된 상품 및 서비스를 제공받으면서 창업한다는 점에서 성공가능성이 높아지면서 프랜차이즈에 대한 관심과 논의가 증가하고 있다. 그러나 프랜차이즈에 대한 관심이 증대하고, 프랜차이즈 산업의 규모가 커지면서 다양한 문제점 또한 부상하고 있다. 국내의 경우 비교적 늦게 프랜차이즈 산업이 도입되었지만 빠르게 성장하면서 문제점을 노정하고 있는 것이 현실이다. 이에 본 논문에서는 프랜차이즈 산업의 특성에 대하여 고찰하고, 또한 다른 나라들의 경우에 대한 사례를 고찰하면서 국내 프랜차이즈 산업의 문제점을 조명하고 이에 대한 대응방안 및 프랜차이즈 산업의 발전방안을 제시하고자 하였다.

Essay on the Lessons Learned from Korean Franchisors Going International

  • Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to find the issues associated with international expansion of Korean franchisors going international and suggest lessons of proposition to reduce the failure risk in international expansion of franchise systems. Research design, data, and methodology - This is the exploratory study and structured to review (1) background to motivate the expansion of franchisors towards international market, (2) the status of Korean franchisors going international in recent years, (3) issues, (4) lessons learned from the experiences, and (5) summary. Secondary sources were reviewed to get necessary data and statistics. Results - Master franchising was the most preferred entry mode for Korean franchisors. Franchisors must understand the expenses to be incurred as well as revenues associated with international activities. Brand is the core asset of franchisor as a differentiation strategy. Conclusions - The paper indicates that even if international franchising is the unique business model for franchisors to use in little or least risk compared with other international entry modes, it needs a set of complex capabilities that much differ from those in domestic and franchisors should take a step approach to the international market with the planned and long term perspective.

프랜차이즈 마케팅믹스에 관한 탐색적 연구 (Exploratory Study for Franchise Marketing Mix)

  • This study, based on theoretical and practical understanding of franchising, aims to conceptualize franchising in terms of marketing mix and proposes new paradigm of franchising. New schema of the franchise marketing mix involves both customer gap and franchisee gap by including customer and franchisee contacts and sets activities that include components of franchise system as the factor of marketing mix. So we could suggest the franchise marketing mix, '4F' by introducing conventional marketing mix concept into this assumption. The 4F schema consist of four sub-dimensions: 'Format', 'Fee & Royalty', 'Franchising Process', and 'Franchise Communication', which correspond to '4P'. In perspective of marketing mix, we could divide the franchise system into primary activity and support activity, then we also could categorize the fundamental activity into four-classification system, 4F schema. We expect that franchise marketing mix, 4F can be useful both theoretically and practically as it not only is not too different from the conventional marketing mix, but it also proposes franchise value chain by including unique characteristics and contents of the franchise system.

국내 프랜차이즈 창업과 독립 창업 집단의 결정 요인에 관한 연구 (Study on the Determinants for the Type of New Venture Creation in Korea: Franchising or Independent Entrepreneurship)

  • 본 연구에서는 프랜차이즈 창업과 독립 창업 집단을 결정하는 요인을 알아보기 위해 9개의 가설을 설정하였고, 가설검증을 위해 서울, 경기, 대구, 경북에 거주하는 일반인을 대상으로 온라인과 오프라인으로 설문조사를 실시하였다. 회수된 총 415부의 설문 결과 중 불성실한 답변 17부를 제외한 398부를 SPSS 22.0 프로그램을 이용하여 신뢰성 분석, 타당성 분석, 상관관계 분석, 판별 분석을 실시하였다. 그 결과, 프랜차이즈 창업 집단과 독립 창업 집단 사이에는 통계적으로 유의한 차이가 있는 것으로 확인되었고, 일반인 전체 398개 케이스의 경우에는 창업의지, 성취욕구, 자율성, 기업가정신, 자기유능감, 교육정도, 네트워크, 연령대, 소득정도의 순서로 집단 판별력의 크기가 강한 것으로 나타났으며, 그에 따른 판별함수와 분류함수가 도출되었다. 한편, 398개 케이스 중에서 실제로 창업을 신중하게 고려하고 있는 178명 케이스의 경우에는 자율성이 두 집단을 구분하는 판별력이 있는 것으로 나타났고, 마찬가지로 이에 따른 판별함수와 분류함수가 도출되었다. 본 연구의 결과는 정부 기업 학교 학원 등 실무에서 효율적으로 프랜차이즈 창업 집단과 독립 창업 집단을 구분하는 데에 활용할 수 있다는 시사점이 있다.

Franchising Practices in Selected Markets around the World: A Review

  • Purpose - This paper attempts to provide an understanding of practice of franchising in eight countries - USA, UK, Australia, Brazil, China, Malaysia, South Africa and Nigeria. The bases of the review are: number of systems and outlets, employment generation, annual turnover, GDP contribution, legal and regulatory frameworks and country-specific franchise business practice nuances. Research design, data and methodology - the paper is descriptive, highlighting elements of the business practice that distinguish one country from another. Documentary data - mainly industry publications supplemented by empirical literature - was used for the review. Result - Although there are commonalities in the technical design and implementation of franchise business practice - especially the business model type - differences exist in terms of legal and regulatory frameworks guiding the industry across the eight countries studied. Conclusion - There are no two countries that have the same franchise practices. Franchise markets in the developed, and to some extent, the emerging economies have saturated. Franchise markets in African countries are at infant stage and thus, these countries are strategizing to attract foreign brands into their domains.

고등교육 프랜차이즈 운영 및 질 관리에 관한 연구: 영국의 사례를 중심으로 (The Management and Quality Assurance of Higher Education Franchising: A Case Study of UK Universities)

  • 본 연구는 영국 대학들의 고등교육 프랜차이즈 운영 및 질 관리 실태를 분석할 목적으로 수행되었다. 영국의 중부랭카셔대학, 리버풀존무어스대학, 런던메트로폴리탄대학의 사례를 프로그램 운영 배경, 협력 내용 및 운영형태, 추진체계 및 절차, 품질관리라는 4개 영역을 토대로 분석한 결과, 주요 특징은 다음과 같이 밝혀졌다. 첫째, 영국 대학들의 프랜차이즈 방식 교육과정 공동운영은 학생 자원과 재정의 확보라는 영국 대학의 관심과 국제화 및 위상 제고라는 파트너 대학의 관심이 호혜적으로 반영된 것이다. 둘째, 협력 분야는 영국 대학의 강점 분야와 파트너 대학의 필요에 따라 결정되었으며 영국 대학의 자율성에 힘입어 운영 형태와 학위수여 방식은 다양화되어 있다. 셋째, 프랜차이즈 운영의 투명성과 타당성 확보를 위한 추진체계가 중층적으로 구성되어 있으며, 프로그램 도입 단계에서 대학 본부의 지원이 체계적으로 제공된다. 넷째, 영국 대학들은 본교와 동일한 품질의 교육서비스를 파트너 대학에 제공하기 위해 엄격한 자체 품질관리를 시행하고 있으며 그 과정에서 고등교육질보장청(QAA)은 중요한 안내 역할을 수행한다. 이상 연구 결과를 토대로 고등교육 프랜차이즈에 관심을 가진 우리나라 대학들과 정부가 해외진출 시 유념할 시사점을 도출하여 제시하였다.

  • The purpose of this study was to find relationship of satisfaction factors between franchisor and franchisee, and to examine the effects on satisfaction with franchisee in foodservice industry. Through the prior study, instrumental and relational factors were adapted as independent variables, and satisfaction variables were selected as dependent variables. The survey was administered to 346 franchisor possessing over 30 franchisees at Dae-gu metropolitan area, and analyzed by SPSS 10.0. The results of analysis were examined through the multiple regression analysis.

  • Purpose - This study examines the status of franchises and qualifications for franchising business, examines the franchising qualifications focusing on overseas cases, and suggests policy directions for strengthening the qualifications of franchising business. In order to achieve these purposes, the study reviewed the cases of USA, China, Australia, and United Kingdom franchising business law. Literature Review - According to the Fair Trade Commission, franchise is defined as a transactional relationship in which a franchiser provides certain support and education to franchisees in order to sell their goods and services more effectively. In addition, a franchise is a legally and financially independent business of franchisers and franchisees, and according to the concept of affiliates, it is necessary to define a franchise as a product and service marketing based on close and continuous collaboration. A franchiser can be defined as a company with the ability to develop a franchise system, create sustainable value based on it, and replicate "KNOW-HOW" to sellers. Case Study - This study examined the requirements for establishing a franchiser in the United States, China, Australia, and United Kingdom. In most countries, the requirements of franchisers must be operated for at least one year, which means that education, manual production, and continuity of stores should be checked. Suggestion - Based on Korea's population density and consumption sales index, we propose a screening system that registers through 2 + 1 systems, which require two stores to be operated for more than a year, by dividing Korea's commercial rights into two and a screening system instead of simple registration. In the case of a small franchisors, at least one franchsing retail store must be operated for at least one year, which should be applied to only one brand.

조직 기업가 정신이 구성원의 조직몰입과 성과에 미치는 영향: 한국 외식 프랜차이즈 산업 (The Impact of Corporate Entrepreneurship on Employee Commitment and Performance: Evidence from the Korean Food Franchising Sector)

  • Purpose - Competitive industry structure and recent economic depression challenge a survival of Korean small- and medium-sized food franchising companies (SMFCs), albeit the explosive growth of the Korean food service industry for last few decades. Against this backdrop, it examines how these SMFCs overcome liabilities of smallness and resource scarcity to strengthen competitive advantage in the market. To tackle this, in this article we focus on corporate entrepreneurship and human resources as a knowledge-based asset for these SMFCs. Furthermore, the ratio of employee turnover is high in SMFCs. We view that such brain-drain may result in poor performance of the Korean SMFCs. As such, we pay attention to the role of organizational commitment to an organization as a solution for enhancing individual-level employees' loyalty toward their organization. Research design, data, and methodology - Our research question is to what extent corporate entrepreneurship (i.e., innovative organizational culture, organizational autonomy, and administrative innovation) affects an individual-level attitude toward the organization and, in turn, employee creativity and satisfaction in the Korean SMFCs context. We collected data from employees in SMFCs for three months. A total of 126 valid questionnaires were collected, and analyzed the data using partial least squares path modeling. Results - The reliable and valid measurement model feed into testing the structural model. Our findings suggest that innovative organizational culture and organizational autonomy positively affect employee commitment. Particularly, organizational autonomy has a greater effect than innovative culture on employee commitment. However, the relationship between administrative innovation and employee commitment is not significant. We also find that employee commitment positively affects both employee creativity and satisfaction. Conclusions - Our contribution to the existing franchising business and management literature is twofold. First, the conceptual model includes three antecedents in the organizational entrepreneurship dimension to organizational commitment. Second, we conceptualize organizational commitment as employee commitment, and validate its impact on employee creativity and job satisfaction at an individual performance level. Overall, this article suggests that it is critically important for the Korean SMFCs to develop corporate entrepreneurship in order to facilitate employees' positive attitudes toward their organizations.
