  • An analytical and numerical examination of second-order fractional-step methods and boundary condition for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations is presented. In this study, the compatibility condition for pressure Poisson equation and its boundary conditions, stability, and numerical accuracy of canonical fractional-step methods has been investigated. It has been found that satisfaction of compatibility condition depends on tentative velocity and pressure boundary condition, and that the compatible boundary conditions for type D method and approximately compatible boundary conditions for type P method are proper for divergence-free velocity for type D and approximately divergence-free for type P method. Instability of canonical fractional-step methods is induced by approximation of implicit viscous term with explicit terms, and the stability criteria have been founded with simple model problems and numerical experiments of cavity flow and Taylor vortex flow. The numerical accuracy of canonical fractional-step methods with its consistent boundary conditions shows second-order accuracy except $D_{MM}$ condition, which make approximately first-order accuracy due to weak coupling of boundary conditions.

  • An account of second-order fractional-step methods and boundary conditions for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations is presented. The present work has aimed at (i) identification and analysis of all possible splitting methods of second-order splitting accuracy; and (ii) determination of consistent boundary conditions that yield second-order accurate solutions. It has been found that only three types (D, P and M) of splitting methods called the canonical methods are non-degenerate so that all other second-order splitting schemes are either degenerate or equivalent to them. Investigation of the properties of the canonical methods indicates that a method of type D is recommended for computations in which the zero divergence is preferred, while a method of type P is better suited to the cases when highly-accurate pressure is more desirable. The consistent boundary conditions on the tentative velocity and pressure have been determined by a procedure that consists of approximation of the split equations and the boundary limit of the result. The pressure boundary condition is independent of the type of fractional-step methods. The consistent boundary conditions on the tentative velocity were determined in terms of the natural boundary condition and derivatives of quantities available at the current timestep (to be evaluated by extrapolation). Second-order fractional-step methods that admit the zero pressure-gradient boundary condition have been derived. The boundary condition on the new tentative velocity becomes greatly simplified due to improved accuracy built in the transformation.

  • The main objective of the research is to develop a research code solving transient incompressible Navier-Stokes equation. In this research code, Adams-Bashforth method was applied to the convective terms of the navier stokes equation and the splitted equations were discretized spatially by finite element methods to solve the complex geometry problems easily. To reduce the divergence on the boundaries of pressure poisson equation due to the unsuitable pressure boundary conditions, multi step approximation pressure boundary conditions derived from the boundary linear momentum equations were used. Simulations of Lid Driven Flow and Flow over Cylinder were conducted to prove the accuracy by means of the comparison with results of the previous workers.

  • The objective of this paper is to present a modified fractional step method of keeping a constant mass flow rate in spatially periodic flows, because original fractional step methods do not precisely keep the mass flow rate constant in time. In the modified method, the mean and fluctuating pseudo-pressure gradients are separately obtained at each time step. This method is successfully applied to channel and pipe flows and shown to be suitable for maintaining a constant mass flow rate in time.

  • Fractional Step Methods(FSM) are popular in simulation of unsteady incompressible flow. In this study, we demonstrate that FSM, combined with a Volume-Of-Fluid method, can be further applied to simulation of multiphase flow. The interface between the fluids is constructed by the effective least squares volume-of-fluid interface reconstruction algorithm and advected by the velocity using the operator split advection algorithm. To verify our numerical methodology, our results are compared with other authors' numerical and experimental results for the benchmark problems, revealing excellent agreement. The present FSM sheds light on accurate simulation of turbulent multiphase flow which is found in many engineering applications.

  • As computer capacity has been progressed continuously, the studies of the flow characteristics have been performing by the numerical methods actively. In this study, 3-dimensional unsteady incompressible Wavier-Stokes equation was solved by numerical method using the fractional step method with the fourth order compact pade' scheme to achieve high accuracy To validate the present code and algorithm, 3D flow-field around a cylinder was simulated. The drag coefficient and lift coefficient were computed and, then, compared with experiment. The present code will be tailored to LES simulation for more accurate turbulent flow analysis.

  • As computer capacity has been progressed continuously, the studies of the flow characteristics have been performing by the numerical methods actively. Recent numerical simulation has a tendency to require the higher-order accuracy in time, as well as in space. This tendency is more true in LES and acoustic noise simulation. In this study, 3-dimensional unsteady Incompressible Navier-Stokes equation was solved by numerical method using the fractional step method with the fourth order compact pade scheme to achieve high accuracy To validate the present code and algorithm, 3D flow-field around a cylinder was simulated. • In this presentation, I talk about various fluid simulation methods that have been developed for computer graphics special effects since 1996. They are all based on CFD but sacrifice physical reality for visual plausability and time. But as the speed of computer increases rapidly and the capability of GPU (graphics processing unit) improves, methods for more physical realism have been tried. In this talk, I will focus on four aspects of fluid simulation methods for computer graphics: (1) particle level-set methods, (2) particle-based simulation, (3) methods for exact satisfaction of incompressibility constraint, and (4) GPU-based simulation. (1) Particle level-set methods evolve the surface of fluid by means of the zero-level set and a band of massless marker particles on both sides of it. The evolution of the zero-level set captures the surface in an approximate manner and the evolution of marker particles captures the fine details of the surface, and the zero-level set is modified based on the particle positions in each step of evolution. (2) Recently the particle-based Lagrangian approach to fluid simulation gains some popularity, because it automatically respects mass conservation and the difficulty of tracking the surface geometry has been somewhat addressed. (3) Until recently fluid simulation algorithm was dominated by approximate fractional step methods. They split the Navier-Stoke equation into two, so that the first one solves the equation without considering the incompressibility constraint and the second finds the pressure which satisfies the constraint. In this approach, the first step introduces error inevitably, producing numerical diffusion in solution. But recently exact fractional step methods without error have been developed by fluid mechanics scholars), and another method was introduced which satisfies the incompressibility constraint by formulating fluid in terms of vorticity field rather than velocity field (by computer graphics scholars). (4) Finally, I want to mention GPU implementation of fluid simulation, which takes advantage of the fact that discrete fluid equations can be solved in parallel.

  • Bifurcation of unstable symmetric flow patterns to stable asymmetric ones in laminar sudden-expansion flow has been numerically investigated. Computations were carried out for an expansion ratio of 3 and over a range of the flow Reynolds numbers by using numerical methods of second-order time accuracy and a fractional-step method that guarantees divergence-free flowfields at all times. The critical Reynolds number above which bifurcation of pitchfork type to asymmetric flow pattern takes place is lower in a flow with a higher expansion ratio, in agreement with the previously reported results. The bifurcation diagrams show that the bifurcation takes place at a Reynolds number, $Re_c = 86.3$, higher than the value that has been reported. The lower critical Reynolds number may be due to deficiencies in their computations which employed SIMPLE-type relaxation methods rather than the initial-value approach of the present study. Characteristics of the flow development during the transition to asymmetric stable flow have been investigated by using spectral analysis of the velocity signals obtained by the simulations.

  • This paper presents how redevelopment of the boundary layer in a backward-facing step flow is affected by boundary conditions imposed on velocity at the inlet, top and exit of the flow. A two-dimensional, laminar, incompressible flow over a backward-facing step with an open top boundary has been computed by using numerical methods of second-order time and spatial accuracy and a fractional-step method that guarantees a divergence-free velocity field at all time. The inlet velocity profile above the step is of Blasius type. Along the top boundary, shear-tree and Dirichlet conditions on the streamwise velocity were considered and at the exit fully-developed and convective boundary conditions were examined. (The vertical velocity at all boundaries were assumed to be zero explicitly or implicitly.) From the computed flow fields, the reattachment on the bottom side of shear layer separated from the tip of the step and succeeding redevelopment of the boundary layer were investigated.
