Up-to-date market dynamics and intense competition have forced a production system to be more widely distributed and decentralized than ever, and the production system itself can be regarded as a collaborative network of autonomous production resources in which the responsibility of decision making is also decentralized into individual autonomous entities. The conventional resource management models, however, are not suitable for the distributed and decentralized environment because of their centralized nature. In this paper, an agent-based resource management model is proposed. The proposed model applies employment relation-driven fractal organization (FrOrg) into organizational model for distributed production resources and presents a resource management framework based on employment contracts. The fractal organization is a structured association in which a self-similar pattern recursively appears, and employment relations between production resources are recursively constructed throughout the entire production system.
The purpose of this study is to propose cognitive ecological effects of fractal patterns in space design. This study investigated the perception and cognition problems regarding landscape patterns showing fractal properties from the cognitive perspective instead of the traditional speculative approach. In particular, the researcher has verified that fractal geometry theory and fractal pattern concept provide insight in space aesthetic values and cognitive effects. Research results are as follows. First, most environmentally-friendly fractal urban forms provide cognitive connectivity. In particular, this space provides a positive emotional response and preference to humans and displays self-organized complexity. This study found that such complexity of space form has characteristics corresponding to parallel cognitive structures of the human brain. Simultaneously, the researcher suggests that the fractal landscape pattern is an alternative for stiff and homogenized modern space. Second, fractal patterns provide hierarchical connectivity within the brain through continuous difference and repetition. In particular, self-similarities of fractal patterns administer significant visual grouping and coherence in human perception. It can be determined whether scaling coherence facilitates easier organization in cognitive organization. Third, fractal patterns in space design provide the basic method for achieving the connection between concept, construction, and urban factors. As a result, the researcher has suggested that scale distribution of geometrical factors, such as fractal patterns, an be a design method to connect various space typologies.
Facing the globalization of world economy, intense market competition, radical change of information technology, firms are obliged to create a new type of organizations characterized by flexibility and adaptability to new and dynamic environments. This paper reviews the theories of complexity in physics briefly and discusses the implications of them on the management of business organizations. It analogizes the core concepts from complexity theories such as cooperative phenomena, self-organization, adaptation, positive feedback, and butterfly effect, and attempts to identify their implications on business management. Particularly, it suggests principles of 'Fractal' management which apply the fractal structure to the business organization.
In this research, fractal approach is applied to the realization of a virtual enterprise. Virtual enterprise is a temporarily built organization to cope with new business opportunity. It is composed of diverse business partners such as suppliers, manufacturers, customers, and service providers in value chains. Therefore, communication and interoperability problems between heterogeneous participants are one of the main concerns in developing collaboration models of a virtual enterprise. Fractal-based reference model can be a solution for this problem. The term 'fractal' is used to represent a participant of the value chains. There are many advantages when participants try to embody fractal-based collaboration model such as; (1) no restriction of inner configuration, (2) guarantee of autonomy, (3) easy implementation of interfaces, etc. Fractals are self-similar, however, this does not mean that they should have same configuration. In this paper, a fractal-based collaboration model for a virtual enterprise is proposed and described with (1) a formal formulation of fractal concept, (2) functional requirements and interfaces, and (3) a goal model as a driving force of the virtual enterprise.
Fractal manufacturing system (FrMS) distinguishes itself from other manufacturing systems by the fact that there is a fractal repeated at every scale. A fractal is a volatile organization which consists of goal-oriented agents referred to as AIR-units (autonomous and intelligent resource units). AIR-units unrestrictedly reconfigure fractals in accordance with their own goals. Their goals can be dynamically changed along with the environmental status. Since goals of AIR-units are represented as fuzzy models, an AIR-unit itself is a fuzzy logic controller. This paper presents a goal regulation mechanism in the FrMS. In particular, a reinforcement learning method is adopted as a regulating mechanism of the fuzzy goal model, which uses only weak reinforcement signal. Goal regulation is achieved by building a feedforward neural network to estimate compatibility level of current goals, which can then adaptively improve compatibility by using the gradient descent method. Goal-oriented features of AIR-units are also presented.
The high degree of uncertainty in customer demands forces companies of today to equip with a flexible and adaptable structural organization. It also has an influence on the configuration of the company's supply chains, since the members in supply chains are dependent to the goods customers need. If a company can not come up with the customers' requirements and their level of satisfaction, the competitiveness of the company will be weaken in the market places. To meet such conditions, therefore, reconfiguration of supply chains should be considered as an important factor in a complex, dynamic, and fluctuating market environment. In this paper, therefore, we have adapted a fractal concept to SCM to facilitate reconfiguration of supply chains. To do so, we have first introduce fractal-based SCM, referred to as fSCM. Then, we have described definitions of the reconfigurability in supply chains and the methodology of Dynamic Restructuring Process (DRP) in supply chains including specific strategies and constraints. An exemplary model will also be briefly illustrated to demonstrate how supply chains conduct DRP autonomously.
Men study the nature in two ways. Scientists and mathematicians inquire a branch of those two ways. Mathematical formulations are the tools and the expressions of their nature. Meanwhile, the other branch, the art, alms for different inquiry. Instead of formulating the nature, the artists create their masterpieces from their ultimate source, the Mother Nature. For thousands of years these two branches have grown together, influencing each others work. Some mathematicians find that formulation, are not enough to fully express the beauty of nature. It is believed that such a simple expression, formula, easily omits the careful details of nature. The nature is simply too chaotic to be shaped with a formula. Of those mathematicians, Mandelbrot, one of the first to realize this matter, introduced the world of fractal geometry. Fractals give new possibilities. It allows us not to limit ourselves to linear prospect, rather a whole new view of this chaotic beauty of the nature. A popular practice to understand fractals is in costume design. The artistic characteristic and organization mechanism is appalled to costumes. Meanwhile, another practice, rather aggressive, is using computer to create an image of fractals. This image is then used for motives to generate artistic expressions. Computer and paper ironing technique is used for fashion illustration in this research. The works were synthesized arid transformed from computer programs. To add more traditional painting touch to this work, Paper ironing technique was used. Since the of effect of this technique is so random, irregular, and unordered, it corresponds to fractal consideration. This thesis asserts an another prospect to fractal as a structural way of describing nature ailed fashion illustration, rather than restricting it to only mathematical theory.

The study aims to determine the significance and characteristics of self-similarity inherent in natural objects or phenomena, the existence of self-similarity in design created by fashion designers, and the traits and internal significance implied in self-similarity and their effects on fashion. The subject of the study is Viktor & Rolf, and the scope of the study is the collections created from 2001 to 2014, which include designs implemented in their early years and those unveiled in the media. Self-similarity means attributes of a fractal structure appearing without change in the original form, even after modification of scale or direction in terms of shape or phenomena. As self-similarity is applied to the arts and design sectors, it leads people to pay attention to fundamental characteristics and intrinsic forms as a factor of expressing a unique creative world. Analysis of Viktor & Rolf collections generated ribbons, overlapping/juxtaposition, side decorations and exaggerated design elements as basic units of self-similarity. These factors had self-similarity rates as high as 84%. Self-similarity was established as design elements formed in the incipient stage were repeated in a certain form, and continued for a long period of time. It served as an element that recognizes design and a fashion designer at the same time. Characteristics of self-similarity appearing in Viktor & Rolf collections can be summarized as homeostasis based on an equivalent relationship, balance based on self-organization, reducibility into essential elements, and uniqueness based on odd shapes. These characteristics influenced the pursuit of consistent brand image, the maintenance of a fashion designer's creative world, the formation of styles and the expression of a fashion designer's identity.
