  • Defocused Fourier plane holograms are stored in disk-type holographic memories where thin recording media are used, the areal storage density per hologram and the intensity uniformity of the signal beam at the recording plane are studied. As the pixel pitch of the spatial light modulator that represents binary data increases, the storage density per hologram increases if exact Fourier holograms are stored. When defocused Fourier plane holograms are stored, however, we show that there exists an optimal pixel pitch that maximizes the area storage density per hologram in general, to increase the areal storage density per hologram, f/# of the Fourier transform lens that focuses the data image should be as small as possible. In this case, not only the intensity distribution at the recording plane but also the recording area becomes very sensitive to the degree of defocusing. Therefore, even if the exact Fourier plane holograms are stored, the defocusing effect owing to the medium thickness should be taken into account to achieve the maximal areal storage density per hologram.logram.

  • Phase-shifting method using Fourier transform (PSM/FT) has been applied to measurement of in-plane displacement of a specimen. Thirty-two interference fringe patterns each of which has different phase of ${\pi}/16$ radian have been gathered from a specimen with in-plane displacement. Low-pass filtering by 2-D Fourier transform is used to suppress spatial noise of the fringe patterns. ${\alpha}-directional$ Fourier transform for PSM/FT is performed by use of the low-pass filtered 32 fringe patterns. Two kinds of specimens are used for experiment. One is a rectangular steel plate and the other one is a rectangular steel plate containing a circular hole at the center. In-plane displacement of each specimen is measured by PSM/FT, and calculated by finite element method (ANSYS) for comparison. The results are quite comparable, so that PSM/FT can be applied to measurement of in-plane displacement.

  • Recently we formulated a 2D hybrid stress element from the 3D Hellinger-Reissner principle for the analysis of thick bodies that are symmetric to the thickness direction. Polynomials have typically been used for all the displacement and stress fields. Although the element predicted the dominant stress and all displacement fields accurately, its prediction of the out-of-plane shear stresses was affected by the very high order terms used in the polynomials. This paper describes an improved formulation of the 2D element using Fourier series expansion for the out-of-plane displacement and stress fields. Numerical results illustrate that its predictions have markedly improved.

  • Assuming that the performance of holographic storage media is ideal, we estimate the area storage density of disk-type holographic memories, when the method of either angle multiplexing, or rotational multiplexing, or both are used. The area storage density is strongly dependent on the f numbers (ratio of focal length to diameter) of both the Fourier transform lens in the signal arm, denoted by $F/#_2$, and the angle range over which the reference beam is incident (or, the equivalent f number corresponding to the angle range denoted by $F/#_1$). The area storage density is largely independent of the pixel pitch of the spatial light modulator when the Fourier plane holograms are recorded, while it is sensitive to the pixel pitch when the image plane holograms are recorded. In general, to obtain high area storage density, the Fourier or at least near Fourier plane holograms rather than the image plane holograms should be recorded. In addition, when the thickness of the recording materials are less than approximately $500\mu\extrm{m}$, rotational multiplexing gives higher area storage densities than angle multiplexing does. To increase the storage density further, however, it is desirable to use both of the two multiplexing methods in combination.nation.

  • Transient acoustic and elastic wave propagation in inhomogeneous media are studied by using the Fourier method. It is known that the fourier method has advantages in memory requirements and computing speed over conventional methods such as FDM and FEM, because the Fourier method needs less grid points for achieving the same accuracy. To verify the proposed numerical scheme, several examples having analytic solutions are considered, where two different semi-infinite media are in contact along a plane boundary. The comparisons of numerical results by the Fourier method and analytic solutions show good agreements. In addition, the fourier method is applied to a layered half-plane, in which an elastic semi-infinite medium is covered by an elastic layer of finite thickness. It is showed how to derive the analytic solutions by using the Cagniard-de Hoop method. The numerical solutions are in excellent agreements with analytic results.

  • A digital micro-mirror device (DMD) has the potential to modulate an incident wave with high speed, and the application for holographic display has been studied by many researchers. However, the quality of reconstructed image isn't good in comparison with that from a gray-scale amplitude-only hologram since it is a binary amplitude-only spatial light modulator (SLM). In this paper, we suggest a method generating a set of binary holograms to improve the quality of the reconstructed image. Here, we are concerned with the case for which the object plane is positioned at the Fourier domain of the plane of the SLM. In this case, any point in the Fourier plane is related to all points in the hologram. So there is a chance to generate a set of binary holograms illuminated by incident wave with constant optical power. Moreover, we find an interesting fact that the quality of reconstructed image is improved when the spatial frequency bandwidth of the binary hologram is limited. Therefore, we propose an iterative segmentation algorithm generating a set of binary holograms that are designed to be illuminated by the wave with constant optical power. The feasibility of our method is experimentally confirmed with a DMD.

  • Phase-only encryption scheme using exclusive-OR rules in Fourier plane and a single path decryption system are presented. A zero-padded original image, multiplied by a random phase image, is Fourier transformed and its real-valued data is encrypted with key data by using XOR rules. A decryption is simply performed based on 2-1 setup with spatial filter by Fourier transform for multiplying phase-only encrypted data by phase-only key data, which are obtained by phase-encoding process, and spatial filtering for zero-order elimination in inverse-Fourier plane. Since the encryption process is peformed in Fourier plane, proposed encryption scheme is more tolerant to loss of key information by scratching or cutting than previous XOR encryption method in space domain. Compare with previous phase-visualization systems, due to the simple architecture without a reference wave, our system is basically robust to mechanical vibrations and fluctuations. Numerical simulations have confirmed the proposed technique as high-level encryption and simple decryption architecture.

  • Complex acoustic signals can be formed in a water-filled acoustic pulse tube under some exciting conditions. It makes difficult to measure plane-wave reflection coefficient with the pulse tube for low frequency bands. In this study, using COMSOL Multiphysics we show that the tube wall excitation generates complex acoustic field of nonplanar mode as well as planar one. From such field incident or reflected planar mode can be decomposed respectively with a modal decomposition method, two-dimensional Fourier filtering. It makes possible to more accurately determine the plane-wave reflection coefficient of acoustic specimen with time gating.

  • For the far field radiation pattern of a microstrip array antenna which is conformed to a cylindrical surface and forms an arc array, an approximate analysis method using FOURIER TRANSFORM is presented. In this method, the conformal array antenna is projected on the effective aperture plane and assumed to be an aperiodic array with nonlinear phase tilt. The effective aperture plane includes four end-points of each arc on the cylindrical surface. When the effective aperture ratio which is normalized to the planar type is from 1.0 to 0.9, it is confirmed that this approximate method is valid. To the array on the effective aperture plane, it is assumed that the phase tilt is due to the distance between aperture plne and curvature surface. Specially, when the radius of arc is more than 5 times to its length, the FOURIER TRANSFORM METHOD could be used with only varying scale factors. The results of calculating by approximate method are good agreement with the results of COORDINATE TRANSFORM METHOD and experimentally measured value in the range of -40dB. And, the difference of half power angle is less than 5 degrees when the effective aperture ratio moer than 0.9.
