  • The purpose of this study is to comprehensively re-interpret the garments that emphasize a phallus such as codpiece throughout history. Perspective to understand the codpiece is extremely limited in most studies, thus it could be refocused in historical perspectives, formative point of views, and from a psychological point of view from various angles. A literature study of research methods and case studies were combined in order to investigate the emphasis of phallus' appearing in costumes. The following results were obtained. First of all, in length, the form of emphasizing a phallus tended to be distorted as it was protruding. Secondly, in area and volume, the forms of the phallus were mostly exaggerated or expanded. For the last, it drew strong attention with particular detail to the phallus, such as ribbons and swordbelts. The symbolic meaning of various garments with which emphasized a phallus has changed in social context through history. Doubtlessly, it represents patriarchal ideology. Also, it expresses dramatic eroticism due to the theory of immodesty. However, the meaning of it becomes more decentralized through reinterpretation of ideal male suits for modern society and turns into a representational tool of sub-culture. In addition, it could broaden out the new way of fashion expression.

  • This study aims to suggest a bag design focusing on the symbol of Bo patterns by developing a pattern-based textile which forms a Korean design with a modern sense of beauty as well as following the conventions of traditional cultures, a design which is based on the previous study on formative characteristics of Bo patterns. That is, seven pieces of motifs are considered as proper patterns that have a symbol suitable for the materials of bags, showing their individual beauty well. This includes Horomum (longevity and prosperity of desendants), Banjangmum (eternity and samsara), Jeonbomum (treasure and luck), Seobomum (innate good fortune), Bangseungmum (it means that things don't break in harmony with one another), Bomum (embroidered patches for royal family representing justice), and Seogakmum (blessed life). With these seven motifs, we developed textile patterns and printed them through DTP. Then, we created a fashion bag design with a high quality using durable canvas fabrics. Therefore, a fashion bag with the Bo patterns symbol has a propitious symbol designed with a propitious shape, not to mention its formative beauty. It is expected to have value as a fashion art item by being redesigned for benevolent patterns with a modern image.

  • Perception between real object and recognized subject of human on objective subject is not the same. The reason Is that individual perception of visual design components are transmitted as the image of whole. It is required process of visual perception. Therefore, I developed the vision of seeing image of pattern which is based on Gestalt visual perception theory in clothes. The summary of this study's results is like followings. Extremely antagonistic terms which are specialized by formative characteristics of formative components are clearness and blur of outline/ fixed shape and non-fixed shape/ visuality and tangibility of representation/ simplicity and complexity of structure/ invariability and variability of mobility/ symmetry and asymmetry of arrangements singularity and plurality of group number. The expression of motive shows that clearness, fixed shape, visuality and simplicity pursuit Determination image, and blur, non-fixed shape, tangibility and complexity pursuit Ambiguity image. The arrangements of motive shows that invariability, symmetry and singularity pursuit Order image, and variability asymmetry and plurality pursuit Disorder image. Therefore, the standard of the coordinator of Pattern image positioning is established as Determination and Ambiguity of motive are X-axis, and Order and Disorder of pattern are Y-axis. As the frame of Pattern image positioning, four separated dimensions have made.
