  • Climate changes from global warming and reduction in agricultural land result in volatility of prices of agricultural products, causing a imbalance of food market in Korea. It is necessary to develop a transnational food industry cooperation system among Korea, China and Russia that directly or indirectly affect food industry in terms of the whole industrial network. This study analyzes the value chain and linkage in the agriculture, forestry and fisheries industries in three nations. The unit structure and the industrial patterns of three nations were derived using the World Input-output Table (WIOT) from 2004 to 2014 every five years. This paper is expected to contribute to develop food security cooperation in the northern part of the Korean peninsula and to promote the mutual growth of food industry through industry linkage and cooperation.

  • Once a production focused on primary industry, Food, agriculture, forestry and fisheries industry is now trying to shed away and plans to totally transform the paradigm of agricultural R&D with a leaping goal towards being a new growth engine. Promoting the bioindustry through utilizing agricultural bioresources was selected as the primary task and also made all efforts to support by all government department and ministry. In this study, we are raised problems and planned the improvements by the empirical analysis of national R&D policy, investment strategy, the recent progress of R&D program, and the performance of R&D investment to achieve early commercialization in fields of agricultural bioresources utilizing. We also propose the R&D role sharing and cooperations of public/private sector to commercialize the agricultural bioresources from the comprehensive empirical analysis results. It will eventually strengthen the national R&D investment strategy and efficiency and then will contribute towards a successful early commercialization performance in bioindustry through utilizing agricultural bioresources.

  • Promoting Rural industry development projects with the support of the Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries had elapsed about 5 years old. Agency selected 30 municipalities they annually promoting business, its performance will be examined. The alternative analysis of the business problem and seeks to provide policy direction. Superior rural enterprises to build business through fostering rural industry than what the system of rural industries in the region to want to foster entrepreneurship, 6th industrialization area industrial structure for each of the items, and not continue to make policy judgments about the point of needis. Therefore, in this paper, so far, through the analysis of the performance of alternatives by sector presented.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the hygienic quality of commercial Kwamegi, a Korean traditional food, made from semi-dried Pacific saury. The hygienic qualities of 10 Kwamegi samples were examined from the 15 commercially available types. Samples with code 3, 4, 6, 11 and 12 were acceptable based on criteria suggested by Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (i.e. moisture below 50%, total mercury below 0.5 ppm, lead below 2.0 ppm, viable cells below $1.0{\times}10^5$ CFU/g and coliform count below $1.0{\times}10^3$ MPN/100g. Peroxide value of commercial Kwamegi ranged from 15.3-104.1 meq/kg. Agmatine sulfate, cadaverine, histamine, tyramine, spermidine, dopamine and spermine were found in all of the 15 commercially available Kwamegi, while tryptamine and 2-phenylethylamine were not detected. Putrescine dihydrochloride was only detected in 7 samples. The histamine content of commercial Kwamegi ranged from 33-124mg/kg, which is believed to be an acceptable limit according to guidelines from other countries. Cadaverine can be used as a potential index for freshness of commercial Kwamegi as there is a good correlation between volatile basic nitrogen and biogenic amine contents.

  • Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) is a systematic preventative approach for food safety and is generally used in food industry to identify potential food safety hazards. Recently, the Korean Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries planed to applicate HACCP programs as an effective approach to food safety and protecting public health at the aquaculture farm of rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss. For the purpose, it need to identify what kinds of hazards are in the aquaculture farm. In the present study, we established Sanitation Standard Operating Procedures (SSOP), which addresses sanitation conditions and practices in the aquaculture farm. SSOP is essential prerequisite programs of HACCP to reduce or eliminate the risk of the hazards being realized. We anticipate that the HACCP programs of aquaculture farm will contribute to supply foods in safety to consumers.

  • Aquatic animal diseases control act which is to assure the prevention of outbreak and spread of aquatic animal diseases in Korea has come into effect since 22 December 2008. In order to prevent outbreak and spread of aquatic animal diseases, risk analysis is newly introduced. The introduction of risk analysis for movement of aquatic animals related to implementation of recommendation of the World Trade Organization (WTO) Agreement on the Application of Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures and should be conducted in accordance with guidelines of OIE Aquatic Animal Health Code. This report involves gathering and analysing the information of international regulation and situations of risk analysis framework in Korea for movement of aquatic animals.

  • Unidentified viral disease with high mortalities has been recorded consistently since 1998 in cultured carp Cyprinus carpio in Korea. In the present study, we investigated the histopathological characteristics of the diseased carp to evaluate the relatedness to koi herpesvirus disease (KHVD). Histopathogical examination revealed severe necrotic changes and vacuous cells in the kidney, spleen, liver, pancreas, heart and intestine, but eosinophilic intranuclear inclusion, a typical characteristic of KHV infection was not detected. These results suggest that KHVD may be not a cause for the high mortality occurring among cultured carp in Korea and possibly other unknown viral disease could are related.

  • In order to achieve the management goals (30by30) mandated by the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, this study established the site-level assessment criteria for OECMs, tailored to domestic circumstances using the Delphi analysis. Subsequently, a site-level assessment was conducted on the National Gariwangsan Natural Recreation Forest. As a result of the study, the initial step involved presenting criteria for the site-level assessment of OECMs, with 'consent for the assessment and recognition of OECM by competent and management authority' proposed as a prerequisite. Subsequently, seven evaluation criteria were established, including 'other than a legally protected area', 'spatially separated area with defined boundaries', 'effective in-situ conservation of biodiversity', 'sustainable management based on the competent and management authority', 'long-term sustainability of conservation outcomes', and 'provision of ecosystem services'. The results of applying site-level assessment criteria to the National Gariwangsan Natural Recreation Forest indicate that six criteria were met, while one criterion (sustainable management based on the competent and management authority) requires further improvement. Specifically, the key competent and management authorities for the National Gariwangsan Natural Recreation Forest are the Korea Forest Service and the National Natural Recreation Forest Management Office, with competent and management organizations established. However, the management focus is primarily on providing forest recreation services centered on users and facilities, making it difficult to confirm the long-term biodiversity conservation plans and implementation by the competent and management authorities. Therefore, it is deemed necessary to improve the long-term biodiversity conservation plans and implementation for the recognition of the National Gariwangsan Natural Recreation Forest as an OECM.

  • Parasitism of Pseudocaligus sp. in wild grass puffer Takifugu niphobles in the coast of Yeosu in spring, 2007 was identified. The preadult and adult stages of Pseudocaligus sp. were observed, which consisted of cephalothorax, genital segment and abdomen. Lunules were present on the anterior margin of the frontal plate. In order to develop the treatment method, we examined the effects of formalin and fresh water on the parasite. The Pseudocaligus sp. were detached from the host fish by bathing at concentrations of 50 to 400 ppm formalin within 60 min, but 57% was exterminated to fresh water for 90 min.
