  • A 13-year old male dog with right forelimb lameness, invisible swelling, anorexia and mild depression was referred to Veterinary leaching Hospital, College of Veterinary Medicine, Kyungpook National University. On forelimb radiographic views, periosteal and endosteal proliferation and cortical lysis and extremely aggressive and amorphous periosteal reactions were located along the metaphyseal region of the proximal humerus. Cytologic and histopathologic examinations after amputation showed anaplastic mesenchymal cells that produced osteoid changes, poorly differentiated osteoblast and osteoclast. And also, it included the neoplastic cells with large nucleoli, multiple nucleoli that differ in size and cytoplasm with several clear vacuoles. Based on the physical examination and laboratory, radiolographic, cytologic and histopathologic findings, this case was diagnosed as osteosarcoma of the proximal humerus.

  • To investigate the effect of neck collars for the protection of self-mutilation, attainable sites of the body in dogs with collars and durability of collars were examined for 7 days. The collars used in the present experiment were hand made plastic basket collar, IASIS$\^$R/ ( heat moldable plastics), commerical plastic and cardboard collars The hand made plastic basket collar was made of basket which could buy at any supermarkets. The dogs with hand made plastic basket collar and IASIS$\^$R/ which was cast from the neck to the scapular region could lick only on digits of the forelimb. However, the dogs with commercial plastic and cardboard collars could lick not only the digits of forelimb but femur and digits of the hindlimb. It was suggested that hand made plastic basket collar was superior to the other collars in easiness of putting, durability, protection of self mutilation and economy.

  • Extracellular recordings were made from the spinal neurons in the lumbar enlargement of 16 cats before and during electrical stimulation of the radial nerve ipsilaterally and contralaterally. Only neurons activated by remote nerve stimulation (RNS) were included in sample. All the cell classes of spinal neurons which received afferents message from the skin and/or muscles were activated by RNS except LT cells. Approximately three quaters of cells activated by RNS had an inhibitory receptive field (RF) on the ipsilateral hindlimb and two thirds of RNS-activated neurons showed spontaneous activity. The most of these RNS-activated cells seemed to be in deep dorsal horn and in ventral horn as well. Stimulation of contralateral radial nerve produced activation of spinal neurons almost same degree as by ipsilateral nerve stimulation. The optimal stimulation parameters of radial nerve for activation of spinal cells were 5Hz-0.5 msec-2V while threshold stimulus for activation was approximately 0.18 V. Following close intra-arterial injection of $K^+$ ion excitability of RNS-activated neuron was increased in 4 of 8 cells whereas it was decreased in 2 of 8 cells. The results indicate that there are some spinal neurons in the lumbar enlargement of cats that can be activated by forelimb afferent $(A{\beta}\;&\;A{\delta})$ inputs.

  • This case report examines the efficacy of carprofen and rehabilitation therapy in a 7-year-old, 4.5 kg, spayed Poodle with unilateral forelimb lameness. Gait analysis assessed kinetic parameters such as peak vertical force (PVF), vertical impulse (VI), symmetry index (SI), and body load distribution (BLD) before and after treatment. The differences between the left and right forelimbs were recorded. Before intervention, the PVF differences between the forelimbs were -4.00% during walking and 40.00% during trotting. Two weeks post-intervention, these improved to 8.33% and 27.67%, further reducing to 6.33% and 18.00% after four weeks. VI differences also improved, with initial values of -0.67 N∙s during walking and -1.3 N∙s during trotting decreasing to -0.03 N∙s and -0.87 N∙s, respectively. SI increased from 6.23% to 11.87% during walking, while it decreased from 33.63% to 14.73% during trotting. BLD differences reduced from -1.17 cm2 and -7.13 cm2 to 0.23 cm2 and -2.17 cm2, respectively, after four weeks. These results suggest that a combination of carprofen administration and rehabilitative intervention can effectively reduce lameness and improve symmetry in dogs with unilateral forelimb lameness, as evidenced by improvements in key gait parameters over the treatment period.

  • An 11-month-old, 19.5 kg, intact male Border collie was referred with intermittent left forelimb lameness to the Gyeongsang Animal Medical Center. The symptom was first discovered about 6 months ago, and it has gotten worse for the last 10 days with non-weight bearing on the left forelimb. During the physical examination, the patient showed painful reaction when the left shoulder was abducted. On radiographic assessment, a radiolucent line and some osteophytes were found in both humeral heads. Based on patient's clinical signs and radiographic findings, osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) was very suspicious. So, we decided to perform an arthroscopic surgery on left shoulder for definitive diagnosis and treatment because the right forelimb revealed no clinical signs. During arthroscopic technique, we found a large OCD flap on the caudo-central area of humeral head, and observed severe synovitis over a wide range on posterior area of the articular capsule. The large OCD flap was removed by a grasping forceps, and many joint mice were removed either. Curettage was performed using a curette on the articular surface until hemorrhage occurred, and articular capsule flushed with a lactated-ringer's solution. The patient was discharged on the same day without any specific abnormal status. Antibiotic, anti-inflammatory and analgesic drugs were administered. Mild lameness on left forelimb was observed in 2 weeks after surgery, but after 4 weeks, the patient showed complete normal gait without any lameness. Although surgical removal of OCD flap with arthroscopic was previously reported, We would like note that a large OCD flap can also be removed by arthroscopic surgery in this report.

  • This study was to investigate the effect of improve forelimb sensorimotor function and neurotrophic factor(GAP-43) expression when differing an application time of tDCS in ischemic brain injury rat model(pre, $1^{st}$, $7^{th}$, $14^{th}$). Focal ischemic brain injury was induced in 80 Sprague-Dawley rats through middle cerebral artery occlusion(MCAO) by 'Longa' method. And then experimental groups were randomly divided into four groups; GroupI: MCAO induction, GroupII: application of tDCS(10 min) after MCAO induction, GroupIII: application of tDCS(20 min) after MCAO induction, GroupIV: application of tDCS(30 min) after MCAO induction. Modified limb placing test and single pellet reaching test were performed to test forelimb sensorimotor function. And the histological examination was also observed through the immunohistochemistric response of GAP-43(growth-associated protein-43) in the cerebral cortex. In modified limb placing test, groupIII(p<0.05) showed significantly improve than the other groups on $14^{th}$). day. In single pellet reaching test, groupIII(p<0.01) and groupIV(p<0.05) significantly improved on $14^{th}$) day. And in immunohistochemistric response of GAP-43, group III showed significantly positive response than the other groups on $14^{th}$ day. These results suggest that the intensity(0.1 mA)/time(20 min) condition of tDCS application has a significant impact on the sensorimotor functional recovery in focal ischemic brain injury rat models.

  • A 6-year-old female Boston terrier dog was presented with seizure episode, forelimb paraparesis, excessive panting, and ataxia. On physical and neurological examination, episcleral vessel engorgement, delayed postural reaction, delayed pupillary light reflex (both direct and consensual), and crossed forelimb were noted. Serum biochemical profiles were not remarkable other than mildly elevated hepatic enzymes. On cerebrospinal fluid analysis, elevated protein concentration was observed. In magnetic resonance imaging scans, the left frontal brain lesion with ring enhancement strongly suggested the presence of intracranial tumor. Concurrently, secondary hydrocephalus and syringomyelia were also observed. The dog was euthanized at 4 months after initial presentation because of aggravated neurological signs. This case was definitely diagnosed as an intracranial anaplastic oligodendroglioma based on postmortem histopathologic examination.

  • An abnormal Korean native cow of six years old with extra legs was observed macroscopically and radiographically. The results were summarized as follows; 1. External features included two normal forelimbs and hindlimbs, and two extra forelimbs which were underdeveloped. The extra forelimbs of different length attached laterally to the cranial regions of neck on right scapula. 2. The large extra forelimb had scapular meromelia. It consisted of underdeveloped humerus, antebrachial skeleton, several carpal bones, metacapal bone(MC3+4) and two digitis with each pairs of hoof and a rudimentary hoof of dewclaw. 3. The small extra forelimb had scapular and antebrachial meromelia. It consisted of underdeveloped metacarpal and carpal bone, severely deformed humerus, fused carpal bones, and two digitis with two hooves, and a rudimentary hoof of dewclaw. 4. The dermoid cyst was observed between the large and small extra forelimbs.

  • Freshwater softshell turtle (Trionyx sinensis) extract has been used traditionally as a tonic soup, and to recover from physical fatigue. To support these claims, the forelimb grip strength of mice was measured after feeding a soft-shell turtle extract for 7 days. The T. sinensis extract significantly increased the grip strength to $1.25{\pm}0.07N$ (P<0.01), which is 16.8% higher than the force on day 0. After exercising, the blood glucose levels in extract-fed mice were 202% higher and urea levels were 73% lower, which were both significantly different than the levels observed after control treatment. Lactate dehydrogenase was significantly higher by 314%, and glutathione peroxidase increased by 165%. In addition, the obesity markers, serum triglyceride and cholesterol, decreased to 62% and 49%, respectively, after mice were fed the extract. These data show that the T. sinensis extract provided more energy for forelimb exercise, prevented protein catabolism and muscle fatigue, and decreased the oxidative stress caused by an exhaustive workout.

  • Flexor enthesopathy is an important cause of elbow lameness in dogs. Flexor enthesopathy is divided into primary and concomitant forms deciding the treatment. The imaging characteristics in affected dogs are irregular medial humeral epicondyles, spur, calcified bodies adjacent to medial humeral epicondyle, thickened and contrast enhancement of the affected muscles. In this report, the radiography, computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were performed for right forelimb lameness of a 3-year-old dog. The irregular sclerotic changes and spur of the medial humeral epicondyles were shown with calcified bodies on radiography. Thickened flexor muscles in right forelimb and fragmented coronoid processes of both elbows were observed on CT. On MRI, high signal intensity of the bilaterally thickened flexor muscles with contrast enhancement was detected. Based on these results, concomitant flexor enthesopathy with fragmented medial coronoid process of bilateral elbows was diagnosed in this dog.
