This study investigates the different characteristics (mainly of community life) in representative intentional communities, between the ecovillage and cohousing, since the different purpose of the establishment of the community might result different characteristics. The study method is data analysis: the analysis material is Community Directory, A Comprehensive Guide to Intentional Communities and Cooperative Living (Rutledge, 2005). Of 750 listed communities, 397 (211 ecovillages and 186 cohousings) communities were analyzed. The findings of the study reveal that there are clear differences of community life between ecovillages and cohousings even though two communities are regarded as similar intentional communities. The similarities between the two communities are as follows: 1) Those mostly distributed in the USA, and established before 2000. 2) Dominant size of intentional communities is less than 20 residents and 20 houses. 3) They make decisions in consensus. 4) They eat together very frequently; at least once a week or more. 5) Shared work is required. The differences between the two communities are as follows: 1) They have different aims of establishment. For instance, ecovillage focus more on eco-living, while cohousing focuses more on the cohousing idea. 2) There are more female residents in cohousings than in ecovillages. 3) There are more cohousings in urban areas with a smaller area of land, contrary to that there are more ecovillages in rural areas with larger areas of land. 4) There are less identified leaders or leadership core groups in cohousing than in ecovillages. 5) Income sharing is more common in ecovillages than in cohousings. According to there findings, it is evident that a different purpose of establishment result in different characteristics of community life even though those belong to the similar category of the intentional community. This paper aims to suggest the policies to solve the short supply of tree burial sites by NIMBY syndrome. For the purpose of this study, we conducted a site visit investigation and interviewed on the solved cases of NIMBY syndrome to tree burial sites and analyzed the factors to solve effectively the loss of residents induced from the burial facilities image of tree burial sites. As the result, in domestic cases, this study deduced the successful types which are providing an economical compensation, making the tree burial sites in cemeteries and making the sites in temple forests. In foreign cases, the types are deduced that made the tree burial sites as the place of attraction image not of cemeteries, and that induced the voluntary participation of residents by economic incentive. Based on such results, this study suggested the solution plans of NIMBY syndrome such as redevelopment of cemeteries, converting the image of tree burial sites into that of attraction places, and inducing PIMFY of residents by contest.
In this study, the fact that the influx of multi-cultural society impact on local communities are examined to analysis the negative impact and positive impact with four types of political (government), economic, social and cultural saw classified. Although some have a negative evaluation, most of the respondents said the influx of multi-cultural society had a positive impact on South Korea's development and believes a positive impact in the future. In the results of the analysis, areas where multicultural society gives the most positive impact of local communities in political (administrative), economic, social, of the four segments of culture has been rated as the field of culture, on the other hand, areas that have the most negative impact has been evaluated as social sector. Though we live in nationalism culture for a long time and heterogeneous foreign residents has so rapidly increased that conflicts due to collision of values of differences and culture of each other have occurred, foreign residents are generally, have a positive impact on our society. Substantially marriage immigrants who successfully solve the rural bachelor of marriage problem are willing to prevent population decline phenomenon and reduce the crime rate in the society, of course. In addition, foreign workers who employed at low wages in the 3D industry which is avoided by the South Korean people have contributed to our country's economic development.
This study aims at exploring some statistical aspects in response to the increase of foreigners and immigrants within the population of Korea. Such an interest conducts our case study of France with regard to the census and legal systems that restrict definition and measures of foreign population in the country. This study also explores historical background, legal entities and authorities involved in policy-related decision making in census and other statistics, and processes of statistical production on the concerned population. Also, an importance of statistical contributions to the immigration policies is discussed.
The number of 1 or 2 households is rapidly increasing due to the participants of women in the working society, the increment of unmarried men, and the change in family structure. The current housing market and the housing administration focuses more on the bigger number of households so that single person households are being neglected. As more individuals move to the capital, living in the city for a single person household has become very difficult. Sharing has become an important aspect among the society and shared housings have hit the minds of single person households as a new way of living. Comprehensive properties, boarding houses, housings for studying (Go-Si-Won), and officetels match the ideas of shared housings. The absent of clear standards on private rooms and shared facilities is making the living very challenging. This study aim to understand foreign (England, Australia, and Japan) institutional characteristics for shared housings to build foundations in order to bring in shared housings into Korea. The residential concept can not be applied to shared housings in Korea directly since the idea of living is different for each nation and its cultural distinctions. However, a clear classification and standards on shared housings depending on the size of the house and number of residents are needed alongside with an index of principles and residential criteria.
The inconvenient truth of sustainable public squat toilet culture varies among nationalities. This culture may be comfortable to the people of China, yet uncomfortable to the non-Chinese, according to the adequate environmental management in Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture (YKAP), northern China. We conducted a series of field surveys and individual interviews (Chinese n = 1,000 and non-Chinese [foreign visitors] n = 100) on several aspects of the public squat toilet: structural properties, waste disposal methods, important factors, and overall satisfaction level. The significant factors in response to the public squat toilets were cleanliness, odor, toilet paper, temperature, soap, other facilities, and presence of cubicles. These factors should be policy priorities of the local government. In addition, 66.2% of Chinese and 91% of foreign visitors desired type E toilets (two full-high partition walls and a door). The results illustrate the nature of a sustainable and beautiful approach to the culturally and environmentally sound management of various types of public squat toilet in YKAP. The government needs to focus on the future-oriented and excreta treatment management of the sustainable toilet culture for residents and visitors of YKAP.

Safety of residents could be considered and then increased when we plan, design, and operate a city. In Korea, CPTED (Crime Prevention through Environmental Design) is currently being applied to new towns. However, it is not systemized and neither efficient, for there are no constraint provisions, and the foreign cases are not specifically customized to the current situation of the country. This means, the introduction of CPTED is an indispensable fact, but there are limits to the budget aids and actual application, for there is no legal base to support it. This study, therefore, aims to find the limits from analyzing related laws and regimes, administrative regulations, and applied cases, and to deduct improvement plans based on examined foreign cases. In this Study, the supporting system of foreign CPTED related laws and regulations was analyzed around the cases of England and U.S.A, and based on that information, the present condition and limits of CPTED related laws and regulations of Korea were deducted. As a result of this study, there were no constraint provisions to apply the design guidelines to actual planning, and there were limits on backup aid and actual application due to the lacking of analyzing the relevant area. Also, an acceptable framework must be arranged by the revision of laws and ordinances to compel the system, and link it with the CPTED certification system which will revitalize the whole system.

In case of a fire in urban large structures such as super high-rise buildings, evacuation guidance must be provided to the occupants in order to minimize human deaths and injuries. Therefore, it is essential to provide emergency evacuation guidance when a major fire occurs. In order to effectively support evacuation guidance, it is important to identify major items such as fire location, occupant position, escape route, etc. Also, it is important to quickly identify evacuation areas where residents can safely evacuate from a fire. In this paper, we analyze the CCTV video and propose a method of measuring visibility of the evacuation zone from the smoke caused by the fire in order to determine the safety of evacuation area. To do this, we first extract the background video from the smoke video to measure the visibility of the specific area due to smoke. After generating an edge-extracted image for the extracted background video, the degree of visibility is measured by calculating the change in the edge strength due to smoke.
The current study was conducted to produce basic data for the policy establishment to improve the life satisfaction of residents in regional communities. The study subjected total 1,400 residents living in youngnam province in our nation for the survey by using convenience sampling. The survey took about 4 months started from March 1, 2007 to June 30, 2007. The abstract and conclusion of the result could be summarized as in below. 1. In subjective health status, 45.4% responded as normal, and the health status scored $2.68{\pm}0.67$ in 5 point scale(53.6 in 100 point scale). 2. The level of life satisfaction was found to show the score of $19.57{\pm}3.39$ in 30 point scale(65.2 in 100 point scale). Characteristically, the highest score was found in male in both age groups younger than 19 and in 20s, but lowest score was found in the age group in 40s(p<0.001). In the level of life satisfaction, 29.6% responded as satisfactory and 11.9% responded as not satisfactory. 3. In reviewing the life satisfaction by the health related characteristics, 65.7% of whom responded as very healthy answered satisfactory in life, and the life satisfaction was significantly high in peoples who do not smoke. However, the level was significantly higher in alcohol drinker than no alcohol drinker. People who have enough sleep tended to satisfy in their life, and the life satisfaction level of whom have leisure turned out to show superiorly high satisfaction level. 4. As the variables affecting on the life satisfaction, sex, age, education level, marital status, health status, stress level, life satisfaction level, healthy life activities and depression level were found, and the influence of these variables was 19.6%. As the above results demonstrate, the life satisfaction of residents in regional community was proportional to health status and highly affected by daily health life. So, the more attentions have to be made on health management and the self effort should not be neglected. Especially, since stress, depression level and leisure life did have effects on life satisfaction, more attentions have to be made on stress solving and on the development of leisure life programs. For the goal, the governments, related private organizations and specialized workforces have to make integrated efforts along with the health improvement project in large perspectives.

This study surveyed residents and public officials for the projects to make smart-city plans of Geumsan-gun. First, domestic and foreign cases related to smart city projects were reviewed. The local status of Geumsan-gun was investigated regarding various aspects of the natural, social, urban environment, and smart-city facilities. The survey results were as follows. Overall, more than half of the survey respondents said they were satisfied with their housing quality. Several problems in their areas, such as inefficient welfare system, shortage of parking space, and industrial infrastructure, were reported. On the other hand, tourism and leisure facilities, health care support systems, industries to boost the economy, and the job market were also important issues. The problem was that the regional problems mentioned above were not in line with their preferences for smart-city services. The implications of the survey results could be summed up as follows. The groupware surveys of Geumsan-gun should be used as survey tools, whereas IT survey tools (Google, Survey Monkey, etc.) should be used for locals. In particular, a survey targeting residents should ask plain and compact questions taking advantage of local gatherings. It is also important to have a pilot-survey with relevant public officials and select related projects and regional issues. The survey of local residents and public officials is a prerequisite for promoting smart city projects. The smart city project shall reflect the needs of residents while solving community problems by considering the survey results and local conditions.
